Many people love Nemo, the main character of the film Finding Nemo. This kind of cute clownfish has a beautiful orange color and white stripes (条纹). But do you know that clownfish can tell its friends and enemies (敌人) apart? They do this by counting stripes.
Scientists kept a group of clownfish with three white stripes, called common clownfish. They then watched what the fish did when they met clownfish with the same number of white stripes, and those with fewer white stripes.
The results were surprising: The fish don’t usually hurt the clownfish with just one white stripe. However, they were aggressive (有进攻性的) toward 80 percent of the clownfish that looked like them. This showed that clownfish are most likely (可能的) to hurt their own kind.
The scientists believe the common clownfish act like this to protect their homes – anemones (海葵). Common clownfish have a special relationship with anemones. They help protect each other. So, the clownfish wouldn’t want another of its kind to “break” into its special home.

I can still remember my primary school homework on animals. I chose to write about the whale (鲸鱼). I have loved them from a young age.
I’m not quite sure why I love them. It might be something about their shape. They have a smooth shape, and their tails look like a heart. They also move so slowly and beautifully, like a tree dancing in the wind. This way, they seem very clever.
So, of course, one of my best memories was when I got to see a type of whale called the Southern Right Whale in Argentina. Watching them moving smoothly in the water, I felt happier than ever. They were so beautiful! And I’m not the only one who loves whales.
Different peoples across the world have a special place for whales in their hearts. Take the Maori people in New Zealand as an example.Living by the ocean, they see whales as guardians (守护者) of the ocean and talk about them a lot in their traditional stories. I was also interested in whales because they need our protection. That’s what my school homework was about – animals we need to protect. Whales play a big role in the food chain (食物链) in the ocean. So, protecting whales means protecting the whole ocean.
13. Which of the following is TRUE about the author’s favorite animal?
A. The author loves whales because of their size.
B. The author first saw whales in New Zealand.
C. The author thinks whales move beautifully.
D. The author started to love whales after doing school homework.
14. What do the Maori people think of whales?
A. They see whales as food in the ocean.
B. They regard whales as guardians of the ocean.
C. They believe whales are harmful to humans.
D. They think whales are the slowest animals.
15. What can we infer from “They have a smooth shape” in Paragraph 2?
A. Whales are very large animals.
B. Whales have a rough body.
C. Whales’s body is good to swim.
D. Whales have a flat surface.
16. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The importance of protecting whales.
B. Different types of whales around the world.
C. The author’s love for whales and reasons for it.
D. The relationship between whales and the Maori people.

Is Sun Wukong a hero?
Most of you know Sun Wukong, the funny and clever monkey. I am from the US. Most people there know Sun Goku from the Japanese cartoon Dragon Ball (《龙珠》). In fact, it gets ideas from Journey to the West (《西游记》).
I read part of Journey to the West before. I feel like Sun Wukong is a very special “hero”. In the US, a hero fights bad guys while also setting a good example for others. Like Spider - Man’s uncle says, “With great power comes great responsibility (责任).”
To me, Sun Wukong doesn’t quite fit into this idea. Sometimes, he is naughty and makes trouble. For example, he steals and eats magical peaches. A lot of people get upset by this. Also, he is proud and wants others’ respect (尊重). If people don’t give him respect, he might start a fight.
Still, Sun Wukong can be heroic too. He leads his monkeys to find a home. He helps protect an important monk (僧人) on their journey. He does good things because he wants to, not because he has to follow rules.
41. What is a hero like in the US?
42. Why does the writer think Sun Wukong is a special hero?
43. List two good things of Sun Wukong to show he is a hero.
44. What do you think of Sun Wukong? Write 20 words or more.
