My neighbor Mr. Johnson is a retired teacher who has become a role model in our community. Every morning at 6:30, he volunteers at the local park to clean up litter. He also organizes free English classes for children in the neighborhood every weekend. What impresses me most is his patience—he never gets angry even when students make the same mistakes repeatedly.
Mr. Johnson believes that small actions can make a big difference. “You don’t need to do extraordinary things to be a role model,” he often says. “Just stick to what you believe in and help others when you can.” His kindness and dedication have inspired many people, including me, to contribute to our community.
Last month, he started a book donation project. So far, he has collected over 500 books for the local library. “Reading can open new worlds for children,” he explains. His actions show that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things through persistence and compassion.

Do your grandparents use social media a lot? In the digital age, many older people are excited to use social media, while others find it hard to keep up. Thankfully, some young people are helping to change that.
In Kingston, Canada, two teenagers (青少年), Poppy and Amy, started a project with their friends to help older people feel more connected through the internet. Do you know about “time banks”? They are becoming more and more popular around the world. A time bank is a community where people exchange services with time instead of money. For example, if you help someone fix their bike for an hour, you can get one “time credit”. Then you can use this credit to ask someone else to help you with something for an hour.
Time banks were first started in the US in the 1980s. Now there are over 500 time banks in the US and thousands more around the world. In China, time banks are also developing quickly. Many communities have set up time banks to help people, especially the elderly and the disabled.
The idea of time banks is simple but powerful. It helps people connect with each other and build stronger communities. People can share their skills and talents, and everyone can get help when they need it. For example, a retired teacher can teach children English for free and get credits. Then he can use the credits to ask a young person to do some shopping for him.
Time banks also have many other advantages. They can save money for people, because people don’t need to pay for services. They can also help people feel useful and valuable. Many people who join time banks say that they feel happier and more connected to their communities.

Last summer, I got the chance to spend a month helping out in a hospital in Rwanda (卢旺达) with my parents. They work for a charity (慈善机构). I was interested in studying medicine in the future, so I decided to help in a hospital there for a month. I wanted to see if being a doctor was right for me.
That month changed my life. Rwanda was very different from the UK. People there had difficult lives, but they were always kind and helped each other. They smiled a lot and shared food. I learned that we sometimes forget how lucky we are.
In the hospital, my job was hard. I cleaned floors and changed beds every day. Sometimes, I talked to the patients and played games with them. I also asked the doctors about their work. They told me, “Our job is tiring. We work long hours and see sad things. But we love it because we can help our community.” Their words made me want to be a doctor even more.
Now, I have a clear dream. When I finish school, I want to join groups like the Red Cross or Médecins Sans Frontières (a group that helps sick people in many countries). I want to spend my life helping people who really need it. I can’t wait to get started!

You may hear “volunteers” many times. You may also see them on the road, in a community centre, or at the hospital. Then what is a volunteer? Volunteers are people who do a job without being paid. They are the people who are looking for the satisfaction (满足感) of helping others.
Volunteers do many different kinds of jobs. Some volunteers read books on to tapes (磁带) so that people with eye problems can hear. Some volunteers send meals to the old or sick people. Some volunteers help visitors when they don’t know the way or when they have some other problems.
Volunteers help when a natural disaster (自然灾害) hits a community. Volunteers help put out bush fires (林区大火). They may help people leave the areas quickly when there is an earthquake, a tsunami (海啸) or a flood. They may also help people rebuild their homes after the disasters. A community may not recover without the help of volunteers.
Some communities need volunteers more than others. If the communities don’t have much money they will need a lot of help from volunteers. For example, communities with lots of old people may need more help from volunteers than communities with more young people. In the city of Zhengzhou, there is a hotpot (火锅) restaurant, Shengyousheng, is doing something very special. It gives jobs to people who are hearing-impaired — that means they can’t hear well or at all.
The restaurant’s name includes (包括) the words “more” and “sound”. It shows its hope to bring more voices into the world. About half of the workers there have trouble in hearing, including 31-year-old Deng Wei, who works as the kitchen manager. He makes about 4,000 yuan each month and says he enjoys working in a quiet and friendly place.
Shengyousheng is a self-service hotpot restaurant. Customers choose their own food and make their own sauces (调味汁), so there’s not much need to talk. This makes it easy for hearing-impaired workers to do their jobs. To help with communication, the restaurant uses big posters on the walls. These posters show simple hand signs, like how to say “thank you” by placing one hand near your chin (下巴) and moving it forward (向前). There are also signs for “food”, “hello”, and “wait for a while”. Next to each picture, there are easy-to-read words, so customers can understand what the hand signs mean. Each table also has cards that customers can use to write to the workers if needed.

On October 29, 2012, the ocean turned extremely terrible. That night, Hurricane (飓风) Sandy hit the East Coast, and Rockaway was hit especially hard.
