In a world that is coping with a growing population, there is a mounting need to develop and manage systems, products, and processes that boost productivity but with minimal environmental impact. To design a product or process well, you first need to deeply understand how a substance behaves. This is exactly where chemical engineers play a key role.
“Chemical Engineering is all about changing raw materials into useful products you use every day in a safe and cost-effective way, such as using fossil oil in making petrol, plastics and synthetic fibres and so on,” said Professor Tey Beng Ti from the School of Engineering at Monash University Malaysia.
A member of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), Tey has published more than 90 papers in leading scientific journals. “Chemical engineers basically understand how to alter the chemical or biochemical state of a substance, to create everything from face creams to fuels,” he said. The belief spurred Tey to launch a research project eight years ago which has resulted in a discovery on how to simplify the production process of therapeutic (治疗的) protein such as virus-like particles.
He said the current flu vaccine is produced in fertilised chicken eggs, but it has limitations. Firstly, the virus yield is very low, and the egg supply could be affected by avian flu pandemics and so on. Apart from that, people allergic to eggs cannot receive such vaccines. In his research, Tey sought to purify virus-like particles via a chromatographic (色谱法的) purification process. This new method delivered up to 17 times higher product yield and cut processing time by 6-10 times, compared to conventional approaches. So far, they have filed 9 patents in Malaysia and published more than 50 articles in leading international scientific journals.
Tey said the work of a chemical engineer could be extremely diverse, but it would always be relevant. “Whether you focus on developing future energy solutions, controlling pollution or protecting our environment, your future as a chemical engineer is bright.”
24. Why are chemical engineers key to products?
A. They master the characteristics of substances.
B. They minimize environment impact.
C. They end fossil-fuel use.
D. They cut costs.
25. Which can replace the underlined word “spurred” in paragraph 3?
A. Trained. B. Inspired. C. Expected. D. Discouraged.
26. What can we know about Tey’s chromatographic purification process?
A. It has replaced the conventional method. B. It requires more raw materials.
C. It is more efficient and productive. D. It has been used in global markets.
27. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph?
A. The specific steps to become a chemical engineer.
B. Prof. Tey’s suggestions on environmental pollution.
C. The challenges chemical engineers face in the future.
D. The promising career prospects of chemical engineers.

Douyin influencer Chen Jifang aged 70 has significantly received 3 million likes for her exercise video clips.
For Chen, her passion for exercising was born out of a need instead of a desire to become famous. According to Chen, her health had been poor and she even had to give up her job after giving birth to her daughter because her health was severely affected by the pregnancy (孕期). In 2018, following a physical examination, Chen was diagnosed (诊断) with a series of health issues. The doctor suggested that she exercise more to prevent her already poor health from getting worse. Therefore, an overweight Chen started with light jogging, but a fitness coach later advised her to improve her size and her knee before running. Because of this, Chen entered a gym for the first time on Dec 29, 2018. Then she hit the gym every day in 2019.
While most people would be concerned about having an elderly family member participate in such hard physical exercise in the gym, it doesn’t bother Chen. Her husband shows his support by doing most of the housework. Her daughter, on the other hand, helps to pick her gym wear.
Chen may be a star in her own right, but she is also just one of many senior citizens in China’s major cities who are accepting exercise enthusiastically. According to a 2019 Cheetah Mobile report on the fitness behavior of the elderly, nearly 90 percent of such people in China have fitness habits while 66.4 percent of them exercise almost every day. The report also notes that the traditional means for the elderly to stay fit, such as square dancing and tai chi, have been unable to meet the new needs of the fitness-addicted elderly population.
28. Why did Chen Jifang start to exercise at first?
A. To become a Douyin influencer.
B. To improve her poor health.
C. To follow the fitness coach’s advice.
D. To meet the new needs of the elderly.
29. What helps Chen stick to her exercise?
A. Suggestions from the coach.
B. Concerns about being old.
C. Eagerness to impress people.
D. Encouragement from her family.
30. What can we infer about elderly fitness in China’s big cities?
A. Elderly people have abandoned traditional fitness ways.
B. More elderly people are willing to try new fitness methods.
C. Fitness coaches are specially trained to serve elderly people.
D. The government has taken measures to support elderly fitness.
31. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. 70-year-old woman becomes a fitness influencer on Douyin.
B. How to keep healthy for the elderly in modern society.
C. An elderly woman’s fitness story reflects a social trend.
D. The traditional fitness ways for the elderly are changing.

Across the United States, more than 440 national parks and 7,400 urban parks offer a variety of recreational green spaces for people and pets. Yet, the US Forest Service warns that urbanization, including park development, is reducing natural habitats for plants and animals, doing harm to wildlife survival.
How can urban parks continue to be vital shelters for wildlife, even as they are designed to meet the growing needs of people? Scientists at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) studied the parks of one of the most populated counties in the Sunshine State — Broward — to answer that question.
Researchers analyzed over 600 urban green spaces throughout Broward County to explore how different physical features such as tree canopy, athletic facilities, and playgrounds relate to human activity and biodiversity.
“We found that the size of the green space is a strong predictor of both human use and biodiversity. Importantly, our findings highlight that green spaces need to be carefully designed to support biodiversity, but also a mix of green spaces with different goals is important,” says Corey Callaghan, senior author of the study.
To further enhance the coexistence of human activities and wildlife in urban green spaces, the use of modern technology and community involvement is essential. One way to incorporate them is through data-driven insights, made possible by citizen science platforms like iNaturalist, which allow people to directly contribute to our understanding of biodiversity in urban spaces.
Citizen science platforms like iNaturalist played a vital role in gathering the vast amount of biodiversity data needed for this study. By providing members of the public with a way to contribute observations of plants and animals in urban parks, these platforms provide a unique and scalable (可扩展) tool to assess biodiversity across large areas.
“As cities continue to expand, we need to ensure our green spaces are working harder for both people and biodiversity,” says Callaghan. “That means ongoing investment in research, monitoring, and community science platforms like iNaturalist. The more we know, the better we can design spaces that are inclusive for both humans and biodiversity.”
32. What does US Forest Service say about urban parks?
A. They’re benefiting wildlife. B. They’re inadequate for humans.
C. They’re threats to wildlife habitats. D. They’re lacking park maintenance.
33. How do citizen science platforms benefit biodiversity research?
A. By collecting large-scale biodiversity data.
B. By educating the public about wildlife.
C. By perfecting the design of eco-friendly parks.
D. By monitoring pollution levels in parks.
34. What does Callaghan believe is essential for future green space development?
A. Public awareness. B. Continued support.
C. Advanced equipment. D. Strict regulations.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Role of Citizen Science in Urban Park Research
B. The Negative Impact of Urbanization on National Parks
C. The Importance of Large-Sized Green Spaces in Urban Parks
D. The Balance Between Human Needs and Wildlife Habitats in Urban Parks

Lily loved painting more than anything else. Since she was a little girl, she had spent every free moment with a brush in her hand. Her bedroom walls were covered with her paintings — beautiful landscapes, cute animals, and colorful flowers. However, Lily was very shy. She never showed her paintings to anyone except her parents, because she was afraid of being criticized.
One day, Lily’s school announced that there would be an art competition. The winner would have their painting displayed in the city’s art museum. Lily’s parents encouraged her to participate, but she hesitated. “What if my painting is not good enough?” she asked. “No one will laugh at you,” her mother said. “The most important thing is to try.”
After thinking for a long time, Lily decided to give it a try. She spent weeks working on her painting. She painted a beautiful sunset over the lake near her home. She put all her heart and soul into it. When the day of the competition came, Lily took her painting to school and submitted it. She was so nervous that she could barely sleep that night.
Para.1 A few days later, the results of the competition were announced.

For example, his first invention was a vehicle with a ball for a wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things in the garden and over rough ground. It was an interesting new use for a ball. Also, even though he changed majors, he was still interested in art as well as designing. Take a look at this photo. What do you see? It looks like a waterfall made from glass and water, with the water running up instead of falling down. That’s surprising. This was a piece of art that Dyson made in 2003 called Wrong Garden. It tricks the eye. Dyson is still inventing new things, but he is also interested in supporting education for students. He has even donated money to the University of Cambridge to support students and research there with a focus on technology.

By providing members of the public with a way to contribute observations of plants and animals in urban parks, these platforms provide a unique and scalable (可扩展的) tool to assess biodiversity across large areas.
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. B 35. D

【答案】 Para.1 A few days later, the results of the competition were announced. Lily was sitting in the classroom, her heart beating fast. When the teacher called her name as the first prize winner, she couldn’t believe her ears. Her classmates cheered loudly, and her parents, who had come to the school, hugged her tightly. Lily felt a warm feeling spread through her body — all her hard work had paid off. She thought of the weeks she spent painting the sunset, and she was glad she had mustered up the courage to participate.
Para.2 When Lily’s painting was displayed in the art museum, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Her work was hung in a prominent place, surrounded by other excellent paintings. Many visitors stopped to look at it and praised the beautiful colors and vivid details. A little girl even asked her, “Did you paint this? It’s so amazing!” Lily smiled and nodded. At that moment, she realized that sharing her paintings wasn’t scary at all. From then on, she became more confident and often showed her works in school exhibitions, inspiring other shy students to pursue their hobbies.
