Born in a small village, I saw how busy farmers were in spring and what the season meant to them. Spring is a time when the land wakes up from sleep, and the fields are ready for crops. If you are lazy in spring, you will get nothing in autumn. So, farmers seem to compete with time in spring.
When I was a little girl, every weekend I was busy planting crops. Whatever it was, I had fun and learned a lot. For example, when we planted potatoes, we needed to cut the sprouted potatoes into pieces and make sure every piece of “seed” had one or two sprouts. It was really like a math game.
Farm work is also teamwork. That’s why every spring field is busy with people of all ages working in it. While planting beans, my father dug small holes, and I put some seeds into each hole. The work was hard and boring, but when we worked together, it seemed easier and more interesting.
I felt the magic of life in spring as well. In a few weeks, the seeds sprouted, encouraging us to care for them by watering and so on. As time went by, they grew into healthy plants. At that time I was really proud of how hard I had worked.
Because of these wonderful childhood experiences, I hold such a special feeling for spring.

A girl held her grandmother’s hand as they walked through the park, and said, “Grandma, this is my favorite time of year. I love spring best.”
“Why do you love spring?” Grandma asked. The girl answered, “I love the beautiful flowers, baby birds, and the sunshine.”
“Isn’t it nice that we have different seasons? Imagine if it is always the same season,” Grandma said.
“I wouldn’t like that. I don’t want to have snow on the ground all year long. I don’t want to have autumn leaves all the time, either. I like it when the seasons are different. If it was winter all the time, we’d never have butterflies (蝴蝶),” the girl replied.
Then they saw two butterflies and her grandma explained something about the different butterflies so that the girl knew it better. “We can see the river from here. Look at the fish swimming about ín it. They are all fish, but some have more orange and some have more white. They are different. That’s what makes everything unusual and beautiful. Summer in your country may not be the same as summer in other countries. Summer is different all around the world!
Summer happens at different times in different places. In the Northern Hemisphere, the half of the Earth above the equator (赤道), summer is in the months of June, July and August. But in the Southern hemisphere, the half of the Earth below the equator, summer happens in December, January and February. So when Chinese people are enjoying their summer wearing shorts and T-shirts, the Australians are having a cold time with heavy clothes on.
The time the sun rises and sets is different around the world, too. In places that are in the extreme north or south of the Earth (such as the North Pole), you can see the sun 24 hours a day during summer! This is called the ‘midnight sun because you can see the sun at midnight (even at 1:00 am) during the summer.
The weather can be different in summer as well. In countries with tropical climates, such as Thailand or Singapore, the weather in summer is very hot and humid with lots of rain. In countries like Spain, things are different. The temperature can be very high. It’s not surprising to be over 40℃. And there is little rain in Spain. But summer is not always hot. In some countries like Iceland, the average summer temperature is around 15℃.
Even the sounds of summer are different! In some countries such as China, you can hear the really loud buzzing sound of Cicadas (蝉) all summer long.
Summer traditions are also different all around the world. And in Mexico, people eat ice hollies called palates that can be made from fruits such as strawberry, mango and stuff. In Japan, people eat flavored shaved ice (刨冰) called Kakigori and cold noodles in the hot summer weather.

This sounded promising, so Alice turned back.
“Keep your temper,” said the Caterpillar.
“Is that all?” asked Alice, trying not to be angry.

“A little taller, please.” said Alice. “Three inches is such a wretched height.”
In silence, the Caterpillar smoked its hookah. Then it got down off the mushroom, saying, “One side will make you grow taller, and the other will make you grow shorter.”

In this school, the teacher had set a rule to encourage children to recite the Bible: if he could recite two verses, the teacher would give him one blue ticket; ten blue tickets were equal to one red ticket; ten red tickets could be exchanged for a yellow ticket; if anyone could get ten yellow tickets, the teacher would give him or her a new Bible. Getting the thick book was the greatest honor for children. So they were busy reciting every day. To Tom, it’s impossible, so he thought of a simple way. He exchanged his small things in other children’s hands. In this way, he got many tickets.
At the beginning of the class, the 35-year-old teacher made a daily speech. Tom was playing with the boys around him. He pulled a boy’s hair and pinned another, but when they turned around, he just read the book carefully, but the children began to talk noisily. Some children even began to fight.
Suddenly, the room turned silent because some visitors came into the room. Three adults and one young girl entered. To Tom’s surprise, the little girl was just the “angel”. Tom thought of his meeting with the girl and the adventure in her garden. Among the visitors, the old man was somebody.
Then it was the time to give prize to those children who had got ten yellow tickets. The room was quiet. Nobody had enough tickets. When hope was dead, Tom stood up with nine yellow tickets, nine red ones and ten blue ones. Then, children suddenly realized that they were cheated by Tom. The teacher didn’t believe Tom could get so many tickets, but the number of tickets was exact. The prize was given to Tom Sawyer and he was introduced to the old man.

I saved the grain carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away.
Then when my crop bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them but as soon as I walked away, they came back. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows, which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat.
With my new grain to store, I found a new problem. The fine grain ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly pots-one for rice and one for wheat.
Next, I formed a clay oven and made some other tools from hard wood and cloth to bake bread. I made and baked bread in my oven. I spent the third year on the island in farming and baking.
Soon after that, I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore the island by sea.
I tried to turn over the ship’s boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined to have a boat, so I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn it from tree to boat.
When it was time to launch, I realized I had my boat too far from the nearest stream. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of constant (不断的) labor.
I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey.

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences (影响) health, feelings and intelligence (智力).
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have some health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. They feel hot and get angry easily.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a scientific report, the IQ (智商) of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have higher intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse grades on exams in July and August, the hottest months of the year.

It was a happy time for me, but there were many dangers because of my small size. There are some incidents (事件) that I remembered clearly.
Every morning Glumdalclitch carried my box to the window. One day she carried me to the window as usual, and then she left me there. Some huge wasps came in through the window, and entered the box. They were the size of birds in England, and they were very fierce (凶猛的). I was afraid of them. I took out my sword and fought them. I killed four of them. Luckily, the others flew away.
Another dangerous moment that I remembered was this: Glumdalclitch left me in the garden one day, and the weather was very bad. First it rained, and then it hailed (下冰雹) very hard. The hailstones were the size of tennis balls, and they hurt me badly. I managed to hide under a tree, but I was still hit by some of them.
Another danger came from an idea that the Queen had. She knew that I liked boats, and she ordered one of her servants to make a little boat for me. The servant put the boat into a tank of water on the table. I spent many hours in this boat. One day, however, a frog jumped out of the water into the boat. I thought the boat would sink, and I was afraid. I was lucky, and I managed to push the frog out of the boat.

Nothing is the same,” Grandma said.

1.Does summer happen at different times in different places?

“You!” said the Caterpillar coldly, “Who are you?”
Alice replied, rather shyly, “I—I hardly know, sir, just at present—at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I have been changed several times since then.” She felt cross and decided to leave.
“Come back!” the Caterpillar called. “I’ve something important to say!”
This sounded promising, so Alice turned back.
“Keep your temper,” said the Caterpillar.
“Is that all?” asked Alice, trying not to be angry.
“No,” said the Caterpillar. It puffed away without speaking. At last it took the hookah out of its mouth and said, “So you think you’re changed, do you? How tall do you want to be?”
“A little taller, please.” said Alice. “Three inches is such a wretched height.”
In silence, the Caterpillar smoked its hookah. Then it got down off the mushroom, saying, “One side will make you grow taller, and the other will make you grow shorter.”
“One side of what?” thought Alice to herself.
“Of the mushroom.” said the Caterpillar, as if she had asked it aloud.
Alice looked at the round mushroom carefully. “No sides at all!” she said to herself. At last she broke off a piece from each side. She ate a little bit of the piece in her left hand nervously.

My name is Robinson Crusoe, and I was born in the city of York in 1632. My father was a successful businessman. I grew up with two elder brothers. One of them died during the war (战争) against Spain. The other was missing one day, and we never knew what had happened to him. My father gave me a good education and wanted me to be a lawyer (律师). However, I wanted to be a sailor (水手) and go to sea. My father was very angry with me. He didn’t understand why I wanted to leave his house and thought I would have an easy and comfortable life there.
“Two kinds of people go to sea”, he said, “They are the very poor people and the very rich people. The poor are foolish (愚蠢的), having no other way to live. The rich have ships and can make money with them. You are not too poor or too rich, so you should choose a middle way for your life. Stay at home with your mother and me. Your elder brother didn’t listen to me, and now he is dead. If you do not listen to me, you will have a difficult life.”
I tried to do what he wanted me to do, but I couldn’t. I spoke to my mother.
“Please ask Dad if he will let me have one voyage (航海) by sea,” I asked her, “When I come back, I will live the life he wants me to.”
Mum was angry. “Your father will not let you go. I won’t, either. It’s dangerous.”
I fought with my parents for another year. Then, I went to Hull with a friend and he was going to London by ship. He invited me to go with him, and I agreed. Without telling my parents, I just went. That was how all my bad luck began.
