Dear Liz,
My stay in Thailand (泰国) has certainly been the experience of my life.
Life is busy and exciting. Bangkok is just like any other big city with a population of 10 million and heavy traffic. I’m very lucky because my host family (寄宿家庭) is in a nice quiet area outside the city. There are Mr. and Mrs. Phairat, their son Sanan, who is 18, the daughter Chinda, who is 16, and Grandpa and Grandma.
I go to an international school with Sanan and Chinda. The school teaches about 70 percent in English, and 30 percent in Thai. I’ve learned some spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favourite. I’m learning all about Thai food and culture. People don’t use chopsticks here, but spoons and forks. When I come back, I’m going to cook you a real Thai meal.
Last weekend we visited some temples. We also drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok. I thought it was great, but Sanan and Chinda say that next month they’re taking me to Phuket Island, where the beaches are even more beautiful. The month after next, we’re going to travel to Mr. Phairat’s hometown in the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there, and they have two elephants. I’m going to ride those elephants—and even wash them. Sanan and Chinda say it’s really fun.
I’m amazed by everything in this country, especially by the elephants. Elephants are an important part of Thai culture and way of life. They have been a traditional symbol (象征) of Thailand for many years in times of war and peace. In the seventh century, a Thai king trained 20, 000 elephants for battle. I’ll tell you all about my Thai boxing (拳击) lessons next time I write.
Love,
Mandy

Maybe you think that many parents have learnt a lot about what their children are doing online. According to a recent survey by Symantec Company, there’s a “huge difference between parents and their children”. Symantec makes many security (安全) software for home and business computers.
How much time do children spend online each week? Parents of children under the age of 18 said their children spend about three hours a week on average (平均). The children, aged 8 to 17, who took the survey said they were spending an average of seven hours online each week.
“I really think that’s because of the time they spend on their mobile phones and computers, when their parents don’t even know they’re online,” says Symantec’s Bill Rosenkrantz. “Remember, cell phones and video game machines all make it possible to surf the Internet. You don’t have to sit in front of a computer screen.”
And what are the children doing on the Web? “They’re doing things, like downloading music, going to social networking sites and shopping online, when parents don’t think they’re doing those kinds of activities,” says Rosenkrantz. Nearly a quarter of the children (23 per cent) might do things their parents would not agree.
So how does a modern parent deal with (处理) this type of situation? “The first thing we strongly recommend is that parents spend time with their children online,” says Rosenkrantz.“Sit down with them and understand what they’re doing. Secondly, have a talk about it. Have a talk about what’s an acceptable activity, what’s an unacceptable activity, and set some rules—time online, things you can and can’t do. Really have those talks. That’s the most important.”
There are a lot of bad people on the Internet. That’s why it’s so important for parents to know what their children are doing online.
1.The data in the second paragraph are used to show _______.

D.children spend more time online than their parents
2.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Parents are too busy to pay attention to their children.
B.Most parents know what their children are doing online.
C.Symantec makes many special home and business computers.
D.Some children surveyed may go against their parents’ wishes.
3.In Rosenkrantz’s opinion, parents should _______.
A.stop their children’s online activities B.shorten the time their children spend online
C.have a talk with their children and make some rules D.use security software in computers
4.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce a kind of useful security software.
B.To advise parents to notice what their children do online.
C.To give reasons for children’s bad Internet habits.
D.To talk about the dangers children may face on the Internet.
“Come and play with me,” the little prince suggested. “I am so unhappy.”
“I cannot play with you,” the fox said, “I am not tamed.”
“Ah! Please excuse me,” said the little prince. But after some thought, he added: “What does ‘tame’ mean?”
“It means to set up ties,” said the fox. “To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy...But if you tame me, we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique (独一无二的) in all the world.”
“Please tame me!” said the fox. “You must be patient. Sit down a little distance from me, like this, in the grass. I will watch you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the cause of misunderstandings. But each day, you may sit a little closer…”
The next day the prince returned. “It would have been better to come at the same hour,” said the fox. “If you come at four o’clock, I shall begin to be happy by three. The more time passes, the happier I’ll feel. But if you come at any random (随意的) time, I’ll never know when to prepare my heart.”
So the little prince tamed the fox. And when it’s time to leave...
“Ah,” said the fox, “I shall cry.”
“It is your own fault,” said the prince, “I never wished you harm, but you wanted me to tame you.”
“Yes,” said the fox, “But now, look at the golden wheat fields. They will remind (想起) me of your hair. And I shall love the sound of the wind in the wheat...”
Then he added, “Go and look again at the roses. You’ll understand yours is unique. Remember: Real importance is unseen.”

Two spoke at once, “The fact is that this should have been a red rose tree. We put in a white one by mistake. If the Queen finds out, she’ll have our heads cut off. We’re doing our best to fix it.” Five started to shout, “The Queen! The Queen is coming!”
Alice looked around, eager to see the Queen. First came ten soldiers carrying clubs. These were all shaped like the gardeners. Next, ten diamond couriers marched in two by two. Yaojiapo Village is in Tai’an, Shandong, and it is also called the “qiuku village”. As the temperatures drop, many people put on qiuku, known as long johns in English, to fight against the cold, and the village becomes busy producing (生产) long johns.
The village has been making long johns for more than 40 years. About half of homes in the village do the business (生意) for a living. Dear Liz,
My stay in Thailand (泰国) has certainly been the experience of my life.
Love,
Mandy

Many people dream of going on a great travel adventure. Most of us keep dreaming; others ▲ .
Gregg Bleakney’s dream was to travel the Americas from top to bottom. He got the idea after he finished a 1,600-kilometer bike ride. Gregg’s friend, Brooks Allen, was also a cyclist. The two friends talked and decided their goal (目标): they would travel from Alaska to Argentina by bike.
To pay for the journey, Gregg and Brooks worked and saved money for years. Once they were on road, they often camped outdoors or stayed in rest houses. In many places along their journey, local people opened their homes to the two friends and gave them food.

Here is some of Gregg’s advice:
Travel light. The fewer things you have, the less you’ll worry about.

A.parents don’t exactly know children’s online time
B.time spent online changes with children’s ages
C.children always spend too much time online
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.C 4.B

A large rosebush stood near the entrance of the garden. The roses were white. Three gardeners were busy painting them red. Alice thought this was a curious thing and moved in closer to watch them. Alice moved a bit closer. “Would you please tell me why you are painting those roses red?” Five and Seven said nothing but looked at Two.
The royal children, ten of them covered in hearts, followed holding hands and jumping along. Next came the guests. Many of them were kings and queens. The White Rabbit followed behind. He looked nervous as he smiled at everyone. The next to appear was the Knave of Hearts carrying the King’s crown on a velvet cushion. The last to join the grand procession (列队) were the King and Queen of Hearts.
