“Are you listening, Simon?” Simon’s teacher asked. It was a pretty usual question.
Simon shook his head, smiling. He hardly listened or tried hard in class. Talking was so much fun. He wanted to be heard rather than listen.
“Listen. And you will learn something.” Mrs. Jacobs tried every day, but Simon never paid attention.
That evening, his throat really hurt. The next morning, when he opened his mouth to say “Good morning”, nothing came out but a croak (低沉沙哑的声音).
Simon’s mother looked at him, “Honey, you’ve lost your voice.”
“Can I stay at home?” He tried to ask, but words didn’t come out. Instead, his mother checked him for a fever and decided it was good for him to go to school, even if he couldn’t talk.
When he got to school, Mrs. Jacobs said “Hello” to him, and he just nodded (点头). When his friends asked him what TV shows he watched last night, he just shrugged (耸肩). By the time the bell rang for class, almost everyone was looking at him as if he’d grown a third eye.
Penny raised her hand, “Mrs. Jacobs, why isn’t Simon talking?”
“He never stops talking,” Richard said worriedly.
Everyone started talking at once. They were excited, worried, and surprised.
Simon sat in class, bored. He watched them talk to each other as if the teacher wasn’t there, but he couldn’t even do that. In math class he could hold up fingers if the answer was less than 10, but that wasn’t fun. He decided to try to pay attention.
He could do his homework that night. It gave him TV and game time with his work all done.
The next day, even though his voice was coming back, he stayed quiet again. The third day, he could talk fine, but he listened and raised his hand to speak.
What a difference that one day made!

A. Mrs. Jacobs was a very strict teacher.

Even though African elephants are protected, many of them are still being killed for their ivory.
At the end of the 1970s, over 1.3 million elephants walked around Africa, but today, their numbers have fallen to around 450,000. This is mainly caused by illegal (非法的) hunting for ivory. Need for ivory in markets, especially in Asia and Africa, continues to push the illegal trade. This has resulted in the deaths of at least 20,000 African elephants each year.
Ivory, also known as “white gold”, has long been considered precious. Its unusual look has led to its use in lots of expensive things. And the ivory material itself can stand the test of time. So many people are willing to pay a high price for ivory products.
However, no matter how much real ivory is sold for, it’s certainly not worth the harm to elephants. That’s why some scientists are working toward achieving the same beauty of ivory without killing any animals.
Thaddäa Rath and her team at the University of Vienna have created the ivory called “Digory”. The high-tech ivory is made from synthetic resin (合成树脂) and calcium phosphate particles (磷酸钙颗粒). It’s first formed into the shape by a 3D printer. And then it is color-matched and colored. Next, it is polished to make it look like real natural ivory.
Although Digory looks so real that it is hard to tell it from real ivory, its chemical structure is completely different from that of the real one. Fritz Vollrath, a biologist who is against killing elephants for ivory, felt excited about the invention and spoke highly of it for the fact that Digory could save many elephants from risks.
Scientists have made some achievements, but we still need to do more research to make sure that it is widely used. It’s still hopeful that scientists can be able to protect African elephants by making high-tech materials to take the place of the real ivory.
41. How does the author show the dangerous situations of elephants?
A. By telling a story. B. By listing numbers.
C. By taking examples. D. By asking a question.
42. What does the underlined word “precious” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Normal. B. Simple. C. Valuable. D. Modern.
43. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Why ivory products are popular.
B. What people can do to save elephants.
C. Where the ivory trade is the most popular.
D. How the scientists develop the hi-tech ivory.
44. What do we know about making “Digory”?
①Its cost. ②Its time. ③Its steps. ④Its materials.
A. ①② B. ③④ C. ①③ D. ②④
45. Which of the following opinions does the author probably agree with?
A. Technology can replace people to create art.
B. It won’t take long to make Digory widely used.
C. It’s difficult for people to accept high-tech products.
D. The use of technology can support the protection of wildlife.

【答案】41. B 42. C 43. A 44. B 45. D
