Being interested in sustainability, manual labor, and cultural exchange, I chose to join Utopic Garden II at the City of Utopia in Rome — a self-organized community space that relies largely on volunteer support.
Our daily work included cleaning the garden paths, building wooden boxes and raised beds for vegetables and creating DIY wooden furniture for visitors. Besides, community life was essential. We sewed, cleaned, and spent time together discussing sustainability and ways to live more on purpose. Almost all of the materials we used were found on site or reused, which made each project a lesson in sustainable living.
I didn’t encounter any major difficulties in the work itself. The main challenge was the constant social interaction. Being with other people all the time, working, eating, and spending your free time together can be mentally tiring.
To cope with this, I learned to take personal breaks to be by myself. The group and the organizers were very supportive; it was perfectly acceptable to take a step back when necessary and rejoin later, which helped me maintain my balance.
I learned a lot about sustainability and practical resourcefulness. One memorable activity was exploring the garden and identifying all the plants. I discovered that almost every plant has a use, from the leaves to the fruits to the branches, which inspired me to pay more attention to my own garden at home.
Working with recycled materials was another valuable lesson. At first, I thought new materials would make construction easier, but creating beautiful and functional structures from reused objects showed me the potential of sustainable practices.
Personally, I learned that entering a completely new environment and building relationships with many strangers at once was a valuable experience for my self-belief and social adaptation.

A. To escape from the boring daily life.

B. Heavy manual labor.
C. Little financial supports.
D. Sustainable materials.
26. What does the underlined word “resourcefulness” refer to in paragraph 5?
A. Labor division.
B. Plant identification.
C. Waste reduction.
D. Material management.
27. What is the author’s attitude towards the experience at Utopic Garden II?
A. Critical. B. Positive.
C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

Yin and Yang is a fundamental concept in Chinese philosophy and culture, representing the two sides of reality. It describes how seemingly opposite forces may actually be complementary (互补的), interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world. The philosophy of Yin and Yang is central to various aspects of Chinese culture.
Yin and Yang are pictured as a circle divided into black and white parts, representing different energies that are opposite but together form a whole. The black side, Yin, stands for the female, the moon, darkness, and receptivity. The white side, Yang, represents the male, the sun, brightness, and the active. This balance is essential for harmony in the universe.
The origins of Yin and Yang can be traced back thousands of years to ancient Chinese cosmology (宇宙学) and have been integrated into traditional Chinese medicine. In this practice, health is believed to be a state of balance between these two forces.
The concept is also important in Chinese martial arts, such as Taijiquan. Taijiquan, a form of martial arts, demonstrates the principles of Yin and Yang through its slow, round movements combined with sudden strikes, reflecting the balance of energy, or Qi. It is both a physical exercise and a method of cultivating inner peace, emphasizing breath regulation and the cultivation of a calm mind.
In traditional Chinese architecture, Yin and Yang can be seen in the design and structure of buildings. The use of space, light, and materials is carefully balanced to create harmony and balance. For example, the interplay of light and shadow, and the flow of air and energy in a building reflects these principles.
Beyond its continued influence on modern Chinese culture and philosophy, the idea of balancing opposites is also gaining appreciation globally, influencing complete practices and lifestyles that aim to harmonize body, mind, and environment.
28. What does Yin and Yang represent?
A. Various aspects of Chinese culture.
B. Black and white sides in personality.
C. Different powerful energies in the universe.

29. Which of the following applies the philosophy of Yin and Yang?
A. Taijiquan and Traditional Chinese medicine.

30. How does the author primarily develop the passage?
A. By listing causes and showing effects.
B. By stating problems and offering solutions.
C. By describing a concept and giving examples.
D. By explaining concepts and comparing theories.
31 What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Disappearance of Yin and Yang.

73. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My sister Sumi is a single mother, and her daughter Anna has always been called “Number 23”. Every time the school released exam results, Anna would end up in 23rd place among the 50 pupils. Always 23, regardless of topic or term. The nickname always filled Sumi with concern.
Sumi now runs a service firm that plans small events — outdoor trips for staff and their families, or weekend parties. The discussion nearly always turns to their children, since most of her clients are parents. You know how it goes — one parent discusses their child’s piano honors, another boasts (夸耀) about math Olympiads (奥林匹克竞赛) or leadership responsibilities. Sumi would simply sit there, softly nodding, feeling uncomfortable.
While others were honoring these “great youngsters”, all she could think about was Anna and her Number 23. At a family get-together, as lunch concluded, someone playfully asked the youngsters what they wanted to be when they grew up. Bold, ambitious answers filled the room: “I want to be a pianist!” “I want to be a famous actor!” “I want to be a politician!” “I’ll start a business and make tons of money!” Adults applauded each declaration, celebrating these impressive dreams.
Anna? She didn’t answer. She was quietly helping — bringing cups of soup, handing out cookies — content in her own little world.
The relative then asked, “Anna, what do you want to be?” Anna paused, then smiled and added, “Uncle, I want to be a Montessori teacher, love tiny kids, dancing, singing, and playing.” The lively room fell silent. Sumi’s heart sank with embarrassment, fearing the quiet meant adults found Anna’s dream small or unimpressive.

【答案】17. B 18. B 19. B 20. C
【解析】
【原文】A Swiss airplane powered only by energy from the sun left from Abu Dhabi. Its creators hope the plane would make the first around-the-world journey without any fuel. The plane is called Solar Impulse 2. It has one seat and is made from carbon fiber. The plane weighs only as much as a car but its wings are wider than a Boeing 747. The plane’s wings stretch 72 meters across. Those wings include 17,000 solar units which capture the sun’s energy. The energy allows the plane to fly day and night at the largest speed of 144 kilometers per hour. The creators said they were not trying to change the airplane industry. Instead, they wanted to show that new energy sources and technologies can achieve what some said was impossible. The plane’s route began in the United Arab Emirates. The pilots also stopped in Oman, India and China. They crossed the Pacific Ocean, stopped in the United States, and continued over southern Europe. They planned to arrive back in the United Arab Emirates in late May or early June.

24. Why did the author choose to join the Utopic Garden II project?
A. To escape from the boring daily life.

25. What was the major difficulty the author faced during the experience?
A. Continuous socializing.
B. Heavy manual labor.
C. Little financial supports.
D. Sustainable materials.
26. What does the underlined word “resourcefulness” refer to in paragraph 5?
A. Labor division.
B. Plant identification.
C. Waste reduction.
D. Material management.
27. What is the author’s attitude towards the experience at Utopic Garden II?
A. Critical. B. Positive.
C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
【答案】24. D 25. A 26. D 27. B

【26题详解】

【27题详解】

D. Two opposite but harmonious aspects of reality.
29. Which of the following applies the philosophy of Yin and Yang?
A. Taijiquan and Traditional Chinese medicine.
B. Chinese architecture and ancient western lifestyles.
C. Traditional Chinese medicine and western classical music.
D. Traditional Chinese architecture and ancient western philosophy.
30. How does the author primarily develop the passage?
A. By listing causes and showing effects.
B. By stating problems and offering solutions.
C. By describing a concept and giving examples.
D. By explaining concepts and comparing theories.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Disappearance of Yin and Yang.
B. The Theory of Yin and Yang in China.
C. The Different Sides of Chinese Culture.
D. The Importance of Chinese Martial Arts.

For the first time, Sumi thought “Number 23” wasn’t that horrible after all.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
All of a sudden, an elderly aunt broke into warm clapping. “What a lovely dream!” she said gently. “Kids need teachers who love them truly, not just those who chase honors.” Her words softened the silence — other relatives nodded, and a few even smiled at Anna. Anna’s eyes lit up, and she bowed slightly, still holding a cookie plate. Sumi stared at her daughter, suddenly noticing the calm joy on Anna’s face, something she’d never paid attention to before.
For the first time, Sumi thought “Number 23” wasn’t that horrible after all. Later that day, she sat with Anna and asked about her Montessori plans. Anna chatted happily about how she’d read stories to little kids and teach them to draw flowers — her voice warm and bright. Sumi realized: Anna wasn’t “average” at all; she was kind, steady, and sure of what made her happy. The “Number 23” nickname no longer felt like a weight — it felt like a quiet, perfect fit for a girl who didn’t need to be first to be wonderful.
