M: Why don’t you come along? I’m sure there’s room for another person.
W: Really? Could you play anything before you started?
M: I only knew a few notes. When I first spoke to Gary, runner of the class, I was worried everyone would be better than me, but we were all equally hopeless!
W: So where do you meet?
M: Well, we used to meet in Gary’s home, but as the group got bigger, he booked a room in the public teaching building at the college. The room is usually quiet, but a local music school is nearby.
W: Oh, and when do you meet?
M: On Thursdays. It used to be 10:30 and that suited me well, but now we meet at 11:00. The class that’s in there before us asked if they could have the room for another 30 minutes.
W: So what’s a typical lesson like?
M: Well, Gary always starts by helping us to tune our guitars. After that he reminds us where to put our fingers for each note. Sometimes we’re so bad at keeping time, so Gary starts clapping to help us again and again.
W: Great. I think I’d love to come.

原文】Amaya Edwards, a 10-year-old superstar, suffered from a rare heart disease at 5. But that hasn’t stopped her passion for the ocean. At seven, on a trip to the sea, she found a struggling starfish on the beach. With her parents’ help, she gently carried it back to the water. Watching it come back to life in the waves was the magical moment that lit up her dream to be a marine biologist. Since then, she has cleaned her local beach nearly every day!
After finding a dead seal on the sand, Amaya created a powerful poster to raise people’s awareness of littering. It was so effective, the governor of Georgia turned it into a postcard and Amaya raised £500 for marine rescue charities through its sales.
But she didn’t stop there. Amaya has written and illustrated five books to help children learn how to protect ocean wildlife and reuse materials creatively. Her books are now available to buy in the UK, USA, and Australia, with the profits supporting charities like the Sea Life Trust.
From rescuing wildlife to leading global campaigns, the incredible girl is showing that anyone at any age can protect the Earth.

A
With the rise of smartphones and more hobby options, many people worry that fewer young people read books. The report Teenager Reading in the Digital Age, published in April 2024, examined how much teenagers read for leisure.
A research team led by Leonie Rutherford, a specialist in young people and media at Deakin University in Australia, surveyed 13,000 high school students about their free-time reading habits between March 2022 and June 2023. Here are the results of the survey.
The study also looked at reading blogs, online magazines, and news media. Most students read these forms weekly or less often. Only 10% said they read them every day, while more than a third never read them at all. Listening to audiobooks was also uncommon, with only 13% of students reporting that they listened to audiobooks in their free time.
Given these findings, the researchers suggest efforts to increase reading among young people. They point out that reading for leisure can improve vocabulary and contextual knowledge, support better school grades, enhance employment opportunities, and promote mental well-being. Supporting this view, a paper published in 2012 by a professor of educational research at the University of Bamberg in Germany showed that continuous reading leads to improved reading and writing skills, and that it is important to read books, rather than short content such as e-mails and blogs.
21. How many students read books every day according to the survey?
A. 1,430. B. 1,560.
C. 1,950. D. 2,080.
22. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Fading of traditional reading.
B. Popularity in digital reading.
C. Reasons for leisure reading.
D. Reading outside of books.
23. What can we learn from the paper in 2012?
A. Continuous reading is difficult.
B. Reading books is more beneficial.
C. Checking e-mails improves reading.
D. Few students have good reading habits.

Alex Williamson was just a teenager when he began a “part time” job working on Windermere Lake Cruises famous passenger vessels (船舰). He loves it so much that he’s still there after all these years and has earned the nickname “The Boat Doctor”, which has become a perfect match for what he does every day. He never fails to fix whatever problem there might be, anything from breakages, worn-out parts, to door handles. He hates the idea of any visitor being disappointed.
Alex started crewing vessels at sixteen and completed a six-year apprenticeship (学徒期) as a boat builder. His favourite vessels are the traditional wooden launches. “I see myself as their caretaker and won’t let them fall into disrepair on my watch.” One highlight was taking charge of the wooden launch “Queen of the Lake” during its transport to London for the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. “It was a once in a lifetime event. I felt the hairs on the back of my neck sticking up!” says Alex. “To be part of history, I’ll never forget it!”
Things have changed a lot over the years. Technology on new vessels like MV Swift, which entered service in October 2020, is quite different from that on the heritage “steamers” like Tern, Swan and Teal. But Alex says he won’t change a thing about his life working on Windermere’s vessels.
John Woodburn, Operations Director for Windermere Lake Cruises, says, “Alex has always been hard working. He learnt his boat building skills from the ‘old hands’ and these traditional skills are almost a lost art. He has a rare talent for fixing boats.”
“I just love to see the excitement of passengers boarding. It’s magical,” Alex says. “Even on my day off, I often watch the boats — I have to slip around like a spy because if anyone from work sees me, they shout, ‘Can you come and fix this, Alex?’” And honestly, even on his days off, he probably would.
24. What does Alex’s nickname imply?
A. He is skilled at his work.
B. He likes building boats.
C. He is famous as a doctor.
D. He cares for visitors aboard.
25. How did Alex feel when he crewed “Queen of the Lake”?
A. Bored. B. Astonished.
C. Relieved. D. Thrilled.
26. Why are the technological changes on the vessels mentioned?
A. To indicate Alex’s success.
B. To show Alex’s commitment.
C. To describe Alex’s experience.
D. To display Alex’s love for technology.
27. How does Alex sound at the end of the text?
A. Strict. B. Ambitious.
C. Honest. D. Humorous.
A 25. D 26. B 27. D

For decades, Khoji Wesselius, living in a Dutch farming village, has noticed the distinct smell of pesticides during spraying (喷洒) seasons. Now, after volunteering in an experiment to count how many such substances people are exposed to, he was shocked to find he had exposure to eight different pesticides through his skin.
Regulators closely monitor dietary intake of pesticides when deciding whether they are safe enough for the market, but little attention has been paid to the effects of breathing them in or absorbing them through the skin. According to a new study conducted by Radboud University, even people who live far from farms are exposed to several different types of pesticides from non-dietary sources. “What’s most surprising is that we cannot avoid exposure to pesticides in our direct environment,” said Paul Scheepers, a co-author of the study. “The real question is how much is taken up by the body.”
The researchers got 641 participants in 10 European countries to wear wristbands continuously for one week to capture external exposure to 193 pesticides. In laboratory tests, they detected 173 of the substances they tested for, with pesticides found in every wristband and an average of 20 substances for every person who took part. Non-organic farmers had the highest number of pesticides in their wristbands, followed by organic farmers and people who live near farms. Consumers living far from farms had the fewest.
While the presence of pesticides in the wristbands does not indicate direct health effects, the authors voiced concern about the number of different types. Researchers have suggested that some mixtures of different chemicals intensify their effects on the human body beyond what studies of individual exposure find. However, the study doesn’t determine how much of these substances actually enter the body.
“I’ve asked myself, was it worth it to know all this?” said Wesselius, who says farmers in his village do not seem to consider the wind direction when applying pesticides. “It’s remaining in the back of my mind. Every time I see pesticide spraying, I see how unaware they are of the harm it can cause.”
28. What is the real problem in the study according to Scheepers?
A. The types of pesticides.
B. How pesticides smell.
C. How much pesticide the body absorbs.
D. The source of pesticides.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly show?
A. Wristbands are effective.
B. Participants are equally exposed.
C. Pesticide exposure varies across groups.
D. Organic food avoids pesticide exposure.
30. What does Wesselius express in the last paragraph?
A. Gratitude. B. Powerlessness.
C. Curiosity. D. Calmness.
31. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Damages Caused by Pesticides.
B. Pesticide Risks and Regulations.
C. Widespread Pesticide Exposure.
D. Ways to Fight Pesticide Exposure.
C 29. C 30. B 31. C
根据第二段中的“What’s most surprising is that we cannot avoid exposure to pesticides in our direct environment,” said Paul Scheepers, a co-author of the study. “The real question is how much is taken up by the body.”(该研究的合著者保罗·斯海珀斯说:“最令人惊讶的是,我们无法避免在周边环境中接触到农药,而真正的问题是人体会吸收多少农药。”)
根据第三段中“Non-organic farmers had the highest number of pesticides in their wristbands, followed by organic farmers and people who live near farms. Consumers living far from farms had the fewest.(非有机农场主的腕带中检测出的农药种类最多,其次是有机农场主和住在农场附近的人,住在远离农场的消费者检测出的农药种类最少。)”
根据最后一段中的“I’ve asked myself, was it worth it to know all this?” said Wesselius, who says farmers in his village do not seem to consider the wind direction when applying pesticides. “It’s remaining in the back of my mind. Every time I see pesticide spraying, I see how unaware they are of the harm it can cause.”(维塞柳斯说:“我曾问自己,知道这一切值得吗?”
根据第二段中的“According to a new study conducted by Radboud University, even people who live far from farms are exposed to several different types of pesticides from non-dietary sources.(根据拉德堡德大学的一项新研究,即便是住在远离农场的人,也会通过非饮食途径接触到多种不同类型的农药。)”以及第三段中的“In laboratory tests, they detected 173 of the substances they tested for, with pesticides found in every wristband and an average of 20 substances for every person who took part.(在实验室检测中,研究人员在检测的物质中发现了173种农药,每个腕带中都检测出了农药,每位参与者平均接触20种农药。)”
D
Working alone is out of fashion. Our schools, companies, and culture are strongly shaped by an idea known as the New Groupthink, which claims that creativity and achievement come from an oddly sociable place. Most of us now work in teams, in offices without walls.
But there’s a problem with this view. As psychologist Hans Eysenck observed, working alone helps people focus on tasks without wasting energy on social matters. William Wordsworth described Newton as “a mind for ever voyaging through strange seas of thought, alone.” Many people achieve deep insights alone before sharing them with others.
Culturally, we often overvalue personal charm and ignore the quiet part of the hardworking and creative process. Consider Apple. Most focus on Mr. Jobs’s supernatural appeal and tend to ignore the other crucial figure in Apple’s creation: a reserved engineer, Steve Wozniak, who toiled alone on a beloved invention, the personal computer.
In 1975, Wozniak, inspired by the Altair 8800 in the Homebrew Computer Club, built a user-friendly computer of his own version within 3 months. He wanted to give his invention away free, but Mr. Jobs persuaded him to co-found Apple Computer.
The story of Apple’s origin speaks to the power of collaboration. Mr. Wozniak wouldn’t have had his invention but for Altair and Homebrew. And he’d never have started Apple without Mr. Jobs. But it’s more a story of individual effort. If you look at how Mr. Wozniak got the work done-the pure hard work of creating something from nothing — he did it alone.
In his memoir (回忆录), Mr. Wozniak offers this guidance to ambitious inventors: “Most inventors and engineers I’ve met are like me… they live in their heads. They’re almost like artists. And artists work best alone… I’m going to give you some advice that might be hard to take. That advice is: Work alone. Not on a team.”
True innovation comes primarily from working alone, as Wozniak emphasized. Inspiration from others, such as the Homebrew community and Steve Jobs, can help bring ideas to life, but it is the concentrated individual effort that ultimately makes breakthroughs possible.
32. What did Hans Eysenck observe?
A. The value of working alone.
B. The overuse of social skills.
C. The sharing of deep insights.
D. The problem of energy waste.
33. Which has the similar meaning to the underlined word “toiled” in paragraph 3?
A. Worked hard. B. Spoke up.
C. Thought straight. D. Reacted quickly.
34. What is Apple’s story intended to tell us?
A. Power of collaboration. B. Jobs’ wisdom.
C. Wozniak’s focused work. D. Technology development.
35. What is Wozniak’s advice meant to guide?
A. Creative invention. B. Working in teams.
C. Artistic expression. D. Acting differently.
A 33. A 34. C 35. A
根据第二段中“As psychologist Hans Eysenck observed, working alone helps people focus on tasks without wasting energy on social matters.(正如心理学家汉斯·艾森克所观察到的,独自工作有助于人们专注于任务,而不会将精力浪费在社交事务上)”可知,汉斯·艾森克观察到的是独自工作的价值。故选A。
根据第三段中“Most focus on Mr. Jobs’s supernatural appeal and tend to ignore the other crucial figure in Apple’s creation: a reserved engineer, Steve Wozniak, who toiled alone on a beloved invention, the personal computer.(大多数人只关注乔布斯的超凡魅力,却往往忽视了苹果公司创立过程中的另一位关键人物:低调的工程师史蒂夫·沃兹尼亚克,他独自一人toiled,发明了备受喜爱的个人电脑)”及后文第五段“If you look at how Mr. Wozniak got the work done-the pure hard work of creating something from nothing — he did it alone. (如果你看看沃兹尼亚克先生是如何完成这项工作的——从无到有地创造一些东西的纯粹艰苦努力——他一个人就做到了)”可知,史蒂夫·沃兹尼亚克是一位寡言少语的工程师,他在一个心爱的发明——个人电脑上独自努力工作。所以toiled在此处表示“辛勤工作;苦干”。故选A。
根据第五段“The story of Apple’s origin speaks to the power of collaboration. Mr. Wozniak wouldn’t have had his invention but for Altair and Homebrew. And he’d never have started Apple without Mr. Jobs. But it’s more a story of individual effort. If you look at how Mr. Wozniak got the work done-the pure hard work of creating something from nothing — he did it alone.(苹果起源的故事说明了合作的力量。

故选A。
It’s a familiar routine: You send somebody an invitation-to a party, a lunch, a meeting and you wait for the reply. Yes or no. Or maybe.
____36____ In some cases, invitees aren’t sure whether they can attend. In other cases, they aren’t sure whether they want to attend. Invitees fail to see how much inviters preferred a “no” to a “maybe”. ____37____
Why does this disconnect occur? One likely reason is what psychologists call “motivated reasoning”. Motivated reasoning occurs when people bias their thinking to arrive at a conclusion that matches their own desires. For invitees, a “maybe” feels like a better response in the present. ____38____ It benefits them, so they convince themselves that it is also what the inviter wants to hear.
Perhaps the biggest piece of advice is not to assume that someone would prefer for you to say “maybe” rather than “no”. ____39____ Is a conference call with a handful of “maybes” worth holding, or should it be rescheduled? By contrast, when you give a direct “no”, the inviter can move forward with a firm plan, knowing exactly what to expect. Another piece of advice is to put yourself in the shoes of the inviter before deciding how to respond. Taking the inviter’s perspective makes invitees more likely to think that a “no” is preferred to a “maybe”. ____40____
In the event that you do tell a person “maybe”, it is a good idea to give a definite answer as soon as possible. Whether your answer ends up being “no” or “yes”, having an answer allows the person to carry on with a plan.
A. It shows their ignorance of inviters’ plans.
B. It allows them to keep their options open.
C. Why do people answer invitations that way?
D. How can inviters realize they are really wrong?
E. “Maybe” often raises more questions than answers.
F. This simple exercise helps prevent motivated reasoning.
G. They don’t even realize how rude a “maybe” feels to the inviter.
C 37. G 38. B 39. E 40. F
根据上文“It’s a familiar routine: You send somebody an invitation-to a party, a lunch, a meeting and you wait for the reply. Yes or no. Or maybe.(这是一个熟悉的流程:你向某人发送邀请——参加派对、午餐、会议,然后等待回复。是或否。或者也许)”以及下文“In some cases, invitees aren’t sure whether they can attend. In other cases, they aren’t sure whether they want to attend.(在某些情况下,受邀者不确定自己是否能参加。在其他情况下,他们不确定自己是否想参加)”可知,此处应衔接上文的“也许”这一回复,提出疑问引出下文对原因的分析,C选项“Why do people answer invitations that way?(人们为什么会那样回复邀请呢?)”中的that way指代上文的Yes or no. Or maybe,以疑问引出下文内容,符合语境。故选C项。
根据上文“Invitees fail to see how much inviters preferred a “no” to a “maybe”.(受邀者没有意识到,邀请者更希望得到一个“不”而不是“也许”)”可知,此处应进一步说明受邀者对“也许”这一回复的认知不足,G选项“They don’t even realize how rude a “maybe” feels to the inviter.(他们甚至没有意识到“也许”对邀请者来说感觉有多无礼)”中的They指代上文的Invitees, even递进呼应上文fail to see,符合语境。故选G项。
根据上文“For invitees, a “maybe” feels like a better response in the present.(对受邀者来说,“也许”在当下感觉是更好的回复)”以及下文“It benefits them, so they convince themselves that it is also what the inviter wants to hear.(这对他们有利,所以他们说服自己这也是邀请者想听到的)”可知,此处应说明“也许”对受邀者的好处,B选项“It allows them to keep their options open.(这让他们能够保留选择的余地)”中的It指代上文的a ‘maybe’,keep their options open解释了为何对受邀者有利,衔接下文,符合语境。故选B项。
根据上文“Perhaps the biggest piece of advice is not to assume that someone would prefer for you to say “maybe” rather than “no”.(也许最重要的一条建议是,不要假设别人更希望你说“也许”而不是“不”)”以及下文“Is a conference call with a handful of “maybes” worth holding, or should it be rescheduled? By contrast, when you give a direct ‘no’, the inviter can move forward with a firm plan, knowing exactly what to expect.(一场有几个“也许”回复的电话会议值得召开吗?还是应该重新安排时间?相比之下,当你直接说“不”时,邀请者可以带着明确的计划前进,清楚地知道会发生什么)”可知,此处应说明“也许”回复带来的问题,E选项““Maybe” often raises more questions than answers.(“也许”往往带来的问题比答案更多)”承接上文建议,引出下文对“也许”和“不”两种回复的对比,符合语境。故选E项。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Another piece of advice is to put yourself in the shoes of the inviter before deciding how to respond. Taking the inviter’s perspective makes invitees more likely to think that a “no” is preferred to a “maybe”.(另一条建议是,在决定如何回复之前,设身处地为邀请者着想。站在邀请者的角度,受邀者更有可能认为“不”比“也许”更受欢迎)”可知,此处应说明这种设身处地做法的作用,F选项“This simple exercise helps prevent motivated reasoning.(这个简单的做法有助于防止动机性推理)”中的This simple exercise指代上文的put yourself in the shoes of the inviter、Taking the inviter’s perspective,呼应前文提到的motivated reasoning这一核心原因,符合语境。故选F项。

Dear Bill,
I’m excited about the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours,
Li Hua
Possible Version 1
Dear Bill,
I’m excited about the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper. I believe “AI Study Tips” is the better choice.
With AI developing rapidly in today’s society, it has become an important tool in learning. This column could provide practical guidance on using AI responsibly and effectively, such as improving English, organizing study plans, or revising for exams. It would help classmates understand both the benefits and limitations of AI. For example, a tip on using AI to summarize reading materials could save time, but it can not replace students’ own judgment and creativity.
Such content not only meets the needs of students but also fits perfectly with our newspaper’s goal to combine learning with innovation and interest.
Yours,
Li Hua
Possible Version 2
Dear Bill,
I’m excited about the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper. I believe “Campus Crafts” would be a great choice.
In today’s digital and AI-driven society, people often focus on screen-based learning and overlook the importance of hands-on activities. This column could introduce various craft projects, such as kite-making, DIY art, and simple woodworking, encouraging students to explore their artistic talents, develop practical skills and enjoy the process of creating. It is a fun way to balance intellectual learning with manual practice.
Craft-making not only helps students strengthen their hands-on abilities but also fits perfectly with our newspaper’s goal of combining learning with innovation.
Yours,
Li Hua

Self-reflection is often seen as a useful way for people to understand their thoughts and feelings. Many studies show that looking inward can help individuals make better decisions, improve relationships, and gain a clearer sense of direction. When used well, self-reflection works like a simple tool that brings order to one’s inner world.
However, research also warns that too much self-reflection can create the opposite effect. Instead of clarity, people may feel trapped in repeated questions. Psychologists call this “over-reflection,” a state in which thinking becomes heavy and confusing. In surveys, students who spent long hours examining their emotions sometimes reported tired minds, tense shoulders, or trouble concentrating. These physical signs show that the body often speaks before the mind notices a problem.
The emotional effects are similar. Healthy reflection usually ends with a small insight or a steady feeling. But over-reflection often leads to doubt, worry, or the sense of being stuck. Some people even become so focused on their inner thoughts that they stop noticing the world around them. They sit with friends but do not listen, or they walk through a day without really being present.
Researchers suggest several ways to find a good balance. One is to set a clear goal before reflecting, such as understanding a conflict or exploring a choice. Another is to limit the time. Short daily practices, like writing for 10-15 minutes, can help people express their thoughts without falling into endless thinking. Keeping this routine also helps rebuild trust in oneself.
Overall, self-reflection is neither all good nor all bad. It depends on how it is used. With purpose and limits, it can guide growth. Without them, it may lead people further away from the clarity they seek.

Self-reflection can help people understand their ideas and emotions, calming their inner world. But too much of it may lead to confusion, stress, and disconnection from others. Physical and emotional signals often show when reflection becomes uncontrolled. Setting clear goals and time limits helps maintain balance. Used wisely, self-reflection supports personal insight without overwhelming the mind.

A
With the rise of smartphones and more hobby options, many people worry that fewer young people read books.

B To show Alex’s commitment.
C. To describe Alex’s experience.
D To display Alex’s love for technology.
27. How does Alex sound at the end of the text?
A. Strict. B. Ambitious.
C. Honest. D. Humorous.

C Widespread Pesticide Exposure.
D. Ways to Fight Pesticide Exposure.

Not everyone responded, but enough did to keep me ____50____ and feeling something different inside.
____51____, something began to change. It wasn’t the people around me-it was me. By taking the first ____52____, I became more open, and ____53____, others seemed more willing to respond. I didn’t always get a friendly answer, but I ____54____ my walk feeling better than when I started.
