After being diagnosed with non-alcoholic chronic liver disease, Diane has waited on a transplant list for three years. Upon learning his mother’s condition, Brian requested donor screening. “I wanted her to be around,” Brian told ABC News. “I wanted her to be with us for a very long time.” Diane had gathered her family to explain her illness. “We visually noticed she was getting thinner, lacked energy, and was often tired,” Brian recalled. Doctors presented living donation as an option, providing materialsfor potential donors. Brian researched liver donation thoroughly. “I felt I could handle it physically and emotionally,” he said, contacting the living donor managers. After screening, he was qualified as a perfect match. At last, Dr. Abhinav Humar, the chief transplant surgeon, performed the successful transplant. He explained Diane’s low transplant priority: “Her condition wasn’t advanced enough for top listing. About 20%-25% of listed patients die before reaching the top.” He emphasized living donation’s life-saving role, noting livers regenerate fully in both donor and recipient within weeks. Nine months after donating a portion of his liver to his mother, Brian was cleared to start training for triathlons (三项全能运动) again. A year later, he was competing in triathlons and hockey. “She’s back to her lively, supportive self,” Brian said of his mother. “She always encouraged us to chase after the things we wanted to do. This was my way to support her.” Diane expressed her overwhelming gratitude. She was looking forward to celebrating her sons’weddings. “I never thought I’d see this day.” 4. What did Brian immediately do when knowing his mother’s illness? A. He asked to be tested as a donor. B. He gathered the family for a meeting. C. He consulted doctors about the process. D. He comforted his mother with promises. 5. Why was Diane’s transplant priority low? A. She took no notice of her illness. B. No family member was a match. C. She had other health complications. D. Her condition was not serious enough. 6. Which of the following words can best describe Brian? A. Loving and decisive. B. Concerned but hesitant. C. Courageous but modest. D. Intelligent and energetic. 7. What does the author try to convey through the text? A. One good turn deserves another. B. Family bonds can overcome illness. C. Life’s dignity shines through selfless acts. D. The spirit of adventure reshapes one’s life. C A single Antarctic krill (南极磷虾) is about the size of your finger. But with a population of more than 700 trillion in the Southern Ocean, the tiny animal’s impact across the entire planet is enormous. They’re food by the millions for seals, penguins and whales. And they keep large amounts of carbon trapped — more than $15 billion worth per year, according to a research team, led by Savoca, an ecologist at Stanford University. Researchers found that Antarctic krill store similar amounts of carbon to coastal seagrass, which scientists regard as one of the Earth’s most effective carbon sinks (碳汇). Krill feed on phytoplankton (浮游植物), which, like land-based plants, consume carbon dioxide and release oxygen as they photosynthesize (进行光合作用). When krill waste sinks to the bottom of the ocean, all that carbon goes with it, trapping it and freeing up space at the ocean’s surface so more carbon can be absorbed from the air. Increasingly, though, Antarctic krill face danger from warming seas and a growing fishery. Scientists say that without international action to strengthen oceanic protected areas and combat climate change, krill populations could drop off sharply in the coming ten years. Researchers also found that an increase in plastic pollution in the Southern Ocean could reduce krill’s ability by 27 percent. “You only have to look as far as our own country for the story of eagles to show you how quickly something can go from being unbelievably numerous to extinct,” they said. “We’re still trying to understand exactly how climate change will affect Antarctic krill and our research is in its early stages. There are lots of other things we need to consider,” another researcher Sylvester says. “It’s just the start. But we believe we’ll make a breakthrough and our efforts will bear fruit.” 8. What is the primary role of Antarctic krill in the ecosystem? A. They’re a major food source for land animals. B. They help lock away carbon and support ocean life. C. They assist in absorbing the waste on the ocean floor. D. They release oxygen and keep the temperature of ocean. 9. What does the underlined word “combat” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Adapt to. B. Give in to. C. Fight against. D. Put up with. 10. Why did the researchers list the example of eagles in paragraph 5? A. To make a comparison in numbers. B. To show ways of avoiding species extinction. C. To prove the strong survival ability of Antarctic krill. D. To explain the necessity of protecting Antarctic krill. 11. What’s Sylvester’ attitude toward the research? A. Positive. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful. D Children exposed to videos by caregivers for their calming or “babysitting” benefits tended to use phrases and sentences with fewer words. A new study from Southern Methodist University psychologist Sarah Kucker and colleagues reveals that passive video use among children can negatively affect language development, but their caregiver’s motivations for exposing them to digital media could also lessen the impact. Published in the journal Acta Paediatrica, the study involved 302 caregivers of children between 17 and 30 months. Caregivers answered questions about their child’s words, sentences, and how much time they spend on different media activities each day. Those activities included video/TV, video games, video chat, and e-books, with caregivers explaining why they use each activity with their child. Print book reading was also compared. Researchers looked at the amount of media use and the reasons provided by caregivers for their children’s media use. These factors were then compared to the children’s vocabulary and length using two or more words together. The research reveals a negative association between high levels of digital media watching and children’s vocabulary development. However, the negative impact on language skills was lessened when videos were used for educational purposes or to foster social connections-such as through video chats with family members. Kucker acknowledges that parents often use digital media to occupy children while they complete tasks. She suggests that caregivers need to consider what kind of videos and how much their children are watching and whether they can interact with them during this period. Future research by Kucker and her colleagues will continue to explore the types of videos young children watch, how they use screens with others, and how that impacts language development. 12. What is the potential impact of being exposed to videos by caregivers on children? A. It enhances their vocabulary development. B. It has no significant effect on their language skills. C. It leads to the use of shorter phrases and sentences. D. It encourages them to read print books more often. 13. What do paragraph 2 and 3 tell us about the study? A. Its research process. B. Its theoretical basis. C. Its underlying logic. D. Its scientific evidence. 14. Under what circumstance can the negative impact be lessened? A. When children focus on tasks. B. When children get involved in the content. C. When videos serve as entertainment. D. When videos aid learning and bond building. 15. What is the purpose of the last paragraph? A. To point out the significance of the study. B. To bring out the focus of follow-up studies. C. To present the practical application of the findings. D. To discuss other affecting factors of babies’ growth. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 I’ve done my share of stress-eating with ice cream or distracting my anxiety by buying something online that I don’t need just to give myself a lift. ____16____ But when it comes to true self-care, I’ve found what really works for me. D. Doubtful. 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. And they keep large amounts of carbon trapped — more than $15 billion worth per year, according to a research team, led by Savoca, an ecologist at Stanford University. 根据第四段中的“Scientists say that without international action to strengthen oceanic protected areas and combat climate change, krill populations could drop off sharply in the coming ten years.(科学家表示,如果没有国际社会采取行动加强海洋保护区并combat气候变化,磷虾的数量可能在未来十年内急剧下降。)”可知,此处的行动是为了保护磷虾,结合并列的“strengthen oceanic protected areas(加强海洋保护区建设)”,可推知“combat”意为“应对、对抗”符合语境。故选C项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Researchers also found that an increase in plastic pollution in the Southern Ocean could reduce krill’s ability by 27 percent. “You only have to look as far as our own country for the story of eagles to show you how quickly something can go from being unbelievably numerous to extinct,” they said.(研究人员还发现,南大洋塑料污染的增加可能会使南极磷虾的固碳能力降低27%。 根据第六段中的“It’s just the start. But we believe we’ll make a breakthrough and our efforts will bear fruit. (这只是一个开始。但我们相信我们会取得突破,我们的努力会有成果。)”可知,西尔维斯特认为研究虽处于初期,但坚信会有突破和成果,由此可见其对这项研究持积极的态度。故选A项。 D Children exposed to videos by caregivers for their calming or “babysitting” benefits tended to use phrases and sentences with fewer words. She suggests that caregivers need to consider what kind of videos and how much their children are watching, and whether they can interact with them during this period. 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15.
