Birds are famous for waking up early. But in a study, scientists found that light pollution is causing birds to wake even earlier and go to sleep later.
A Helpful Device
Dr. Pease teaches at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He began using a special AI-powered device (设备) called a PUC to record (录制) bird songs and tell which birds are singing. The device also records time, place, and weather information, and sends all of these to the Internet.
Dr. Pease says, “We not only know where the birds are, but what they are doing day and night.” He uses this information to investigate how light pollution is affecting (影响) birds.
The Study
Light pollution takes place when too much artificial light, like that from streetlights or buildings, makes the night much brighter. The scientists wanted to find out how living in areas with light pollution affected the birds.
The scientists studied over 60 million bird calls from 583 kinds of birds that are usually active during the day. They knew the time and place of each bird sound. This helped them to compare (比较) the timing of the calls with the amount (数量) of light pollution in the area.
They found light pollution greatly affected how active the birds were in the morning and evening. In bright areas, birds began singing about 18 minutes early. At night, they sang for another 32 minutes. That means birds in areas with light pollution are staying up about 50 minutes longer every day.
The light had a stronger effect on birds with larger eyes. But light pollution didn’t seem to affect birds that nested in dark places.
The scientists say it’s worrying that light pollution may affect natural habits of birds. But they think it’s too early to tell whether (是否) staying up longer is truly bad for the birds. Maybe the birds are finding a way to live with it.
28. What do we know about PUC from the passage?
A. It can record the bird calls and tell which birds are singing.
B. It can help birds stay away from light pollution at night.
C. It can make birds wake up earlier in the morning.
29. What does the word “investigate” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. To make something different.
B. To find out about something.
C. To keep something out of view.
30. Which can support the idea “Light pollution greatly affects birds”?
A. 583 kinds of birds are usually active during the day.
B. More and more birds with larger eyes nest in dark places.
C. Birds in light pollution areas sing about 50 minutes longer per day.
31. Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A. It’s challenging to find a better place for birds to live.
B. Scientists need to study more to come to a conclusion.
C. People should learn about light pollution to rescue birds.
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. C 31. B

Think about what you usually do on a walk. If (如果) you’d like to feel more grounded and present, you’ll love the idea of a color walk.
A color walk is a slow, relaxing walk outside. To go on a color walk, first, pick out a color. Then you set off down the sidewalk, and keep an eye out for things in that specific (具体的) color as you walk. If you choose to look for yellow, then you might see a yellow wall, a person in a yellow sweater, or a yellow chair outside a cafe. It’s said that looking for one specific color makes it easier to stay present—and it could even help you feel less worried.
According to Prerna Menon, a scientist, color walks are different from usual walks in several helpful ways. “A color walk wakes up your nervous system (神经系统) in a way that a usual walk may not,” she says. Menon says a color walk makes you look up and out at the world around you in a good way. “By using your senses (感官) and staying present, you can help your body relax,” she says.
To turn a color walk into a habit, you can look for a new color every time you are ready for a walk.
Of course, a color walk is also a lot of fun. It feels like a fun game where you go around the town and look for interesting things. “Color walks not only help you train yourself in mindfulness, but also heal (治愈) your younger self,” Menon says.
Anyone who feels worried can try a color walk. Looking for a specific color drops you into the present moment and helps you stay away from the worries of the future or the bad experiences from the past. Love this idea? Then pick a color and go on a color walk today.

十一、阅读理解(共6分,60-62每小题1分,63小题3分)
I’m Fiona Walker, a naturalist. I work with seventh and eighth graders in an afterschool nature program, Nature Web.
This program is developed by the McFarlane Nature Center. Our goal is to help students learn about the plant and animal life around them. A few years ago, we found that children seem to know a lot about the rainforest. But they have no idea about local living things, even what lives in their own backyards! We want people to develop pride in their own towns. We hope they will want to protect the natural areas where they live.
We have Nature Web groups at 12 junior high schools. At those schools, any seventh or eighth grade student can join a group. Each Nature Web group meets once every month with two naturalists from the center. The naturalists plan and carry out an activity.
We do lots of different things. Often, we walk outdoors to look for wildlife. We explore forests. We study animal tracks (足迹) in the snow. We learn to tell the calls of different birds. We use a microscope to look at life in a drop of pond water. At the end of every meeting, we return to the school to talk about our findings.
We’ve had some wonderful experiences. One of my favorites was Biodiversity Day. We wanted our students to discover how many different species (物种) live in one small area. One Saturday, we asked them each to spend two hours studying nature in their own neighborhoods. The idea was to write down every living thing they saw. One girl even found 53 species in her own yard, from moss and ants to oak trees and squirrels.
As a naturalist, I’ve always loved being outdoors and I’m always curious about everything I see and hear. Anyone who loves to explore nature and wants to learn as much as possible about it is a naturalist. I’m just lucky to have a job that lets me do what I love all the time.
48. Why did McFarlane Nature Center create Nature Web?
A. To help parents take care of their children after school.
B. To encourage students to grow into local nature lovers.
C. To guide people to plant local trees in their backyards.
49. What can students do in Nature Web?
A. They can experience hands-on activities.
B. They can present what they found to their parents.
C. They can decide how to run the program on their own.
50. Why does Fiona talk about Biodiversity Day?
A. To show small areas are probably full of life.

Daniel said, “I don’t think so.”

B It can help birds stay away from light pollution at night.
Think about what you usually do on a walk. If (如果) you’d like to feel more grounded and present you’ll love the idea of a color walk.
