3. Mary is so vain that every time she passes a mirror, she stops ________ at her reflection.
A. looking B. being looked C. to have looked D. to look

A. remains B. remained C. has remained D. had remained
【答案】B

C. absorbed; seated D. absorbing; sitting

My backpack weighed 53 pounds, full of dried food, water and other bits and bobs. I was ready for my first through-hike for 15 days, setting out on the 180-kilometre Sunshine Coast Trail, Canada’s longest hut-to-hut trail (小路).
While I was in the company of other hikers on most nights, the-second hut was empty. A hidden path nearby led to a rough bench on a small knoll (土墩) overlooking a clearing. I imagined someone had created and placed this bench in this exact spot not for themselves but for future hikers seeking a moment’s peace in the wilderness.
I came to cherish the solitude (孤独). Having the forest entirely to myself, I sat and stared out at what felt like my own private lake, daydreaming while watching the grass waving and listening to the gentle sound of the water. Out here, I didn’t need to accommodate anyone else’s needs and wants. I could just be me with the freedom to do whatever I wanted, No schedule, no rush and not a care in the world.
The trail varied a lot. Sometimes it was wide and flat; other times it snaked through the forest with no end in sight. The reflective orange trail markers guided me — squares for southbound and diamonds for northbound. It’s hard to get lost, even for someone like me with no sense of direction.
Through-hiking creates a hiker’s grapevine (小道消息). At one hut, I was told about a man from France who might be coming my way. Later, a pair of hikers also spoke of this happy, easygoing Frenchman with long, curly brown hair hiking at a leisurely pace. Over the next two days, someone even asked if I was that Frenchman, which made me laugh. While I was preparing dinner on top of Tin Hat Mountain, a man with long brown hair approached me, “Are you Tommy?” “Pierre?” I shouted. It turned out Pierre learned of my existence from all the hut logbooks I signed. He’d caught up to me and we became friends even before meeting.
Why do people go through-hiking? Is it to be in nature? To see beautiful views? One could do those things without all this hassle (麻烦,繁琐的事). I sought independence and adventure, to experience a different outlook on life, and to truly live and feel the raw grandness of the world. It was a quest — to visit every hut on the trail and make it from start to finish on my own two feet.
In the end, I settled back into city life with these memories and a slightly changed perspective about what’s important. The next time I’m at work, listening to co-workers’, complaint, my mind will wander back to life on the trail — content and free.
34. In the third paragraph, the author uses the phrase “felt like my own private lake” mainly to ________.
A. convey a sense of ownership and calmness.
B. highlight the loneliness experienced during the hike.
C. emphasize the vastness of the natural landscape.
D. compare the lake to a personal possession.
35. How did the author distinguish between southbound and northbound trails?
A. By the color of the markers. B. By the shape of the markers.
C. By the distance between markers. D. By the presence of hut logbooks.
36. What connected the author and Pierre before they met?
A. Shared interest in French culture. B. Mutual friends from previous hikes.
C. Notes left in hut logbooks. D. A shared goal to summit Tin Hat Mountain.
37. What lasting effect did the hike have on the author?
A. A desire to permanently leave city life. B. Improved navigation and surviving skills.
C. A newfound appreciation for solitude and simplicity. D. A fear of returning to routine responsibilities.

In baseball, pitchers (投手) need both psychology and skill to strike out batters. Various pitchers have different ways to “psych out” batters. Some try to make the batters think that they are crazy. One major league pitcher was known to cover his uniform with dirt during the game so that batters would think he was nothing but a slob (懒汉、笨蛋). A batter would take one look at this pitcher and think there was no way he could really pitch well. The pitcher struck out a lot of batters that way. Other pitchers also tried switching their pitching hands during the game and even throwing balls over or behind the batters in order to psych them out.
Sometimes pitchers do not need to do anything at all to psych out batters. The pitcher can just stand on the mound (土堆) and take his time pitching. This messes up the batter’s timing. A pitcher might also wait for the batter to step up to home plate, and then step off the pitcher’s mound to throw a few balls to first base for practice. One pitcher famous for his fast ball would stand on the pitcher’s mound and just stare at the batter. This gave the batter plenty of time to think about the pitch that was about to be thrown. When the pitcher saw that the batter was starting to feel ill at ease, he let his fast ball fly. It was an excellent tactic (战术) for this pitcher.
Some pitchers rely less on skill and more on cheating to get their pitches past batters. These pitchers can “scuff” or “load” balls to make them fly unpredictably. A scuffed ball is a ball that has been scraped or cut, usually with sandpaper. A pitcher might keep a small piece of sandpaper in his glove or even buried in the pitcher’s mound. Scuffed balls can fly left or right or even drop low when they are pitched correctly. Loaded balls are balls which have something on them. This “something” might include spit, sweat, or even petroleum jelly (凡士林). A pitcher can put a little bit of petroleum jelly in his armpit (腋窝), under the front of his hat, or even under his shoelaces before a game. When this jelly is put on the ball, the ball will drop below a batter’s swing as the ball flies over home plate.
Pitching scuffed or loaded balls is illegal, and a pitcher who is caught doing this can be thrown out of the game or even suspended from a team. However, some pitchers still take the chance.
38. Why would a pitcher cover his uniform with dirt during a game?
A. To show he is not serious about the game.
B. To make batters underestimate his pitching ability.
C. To avoid being recognized by the opponents.
D. To mess up the batter’s timing.
39. According to the passage, how can a pitcher mess up a batter’s timing?
A. By switching his pitching hand suddenly.
B. By throwing balls over the batter’s head fast.
C. By staring at the batters and taking his time to pitch.
D. By scuffing the ball with sandpaper.
40. What does the second paragraph mainly focus on?
A. The standard steps for a pitcher to warm up before pitching.
B. The ways to distract batters by changing pitching positions.
C. The physical skills to improve the speed and accuracy of pitches.
D. The psychological tactics that require to disturb batters mentally.
41. How is the passage organized?
A. By comparing the effects of psychological tricks and cheating methods.
B. By analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each tactic.
C. By telling a story about a famous pitcher’s successful experience.
D. By introducing different types of pitching tactics in baseball.

Loneliness has been cast as a public health crisis, even deadly. A 2010 study found that those with weaker social relationships had a higher risk of early mortality (死亡率) than those who did not. The dangers of loneliness are countless — social isolation is associated with a. greater risk of cardiovascular (心脑血管) disease, stroke, depression, and anxiety.
Almost everyone feels lonely on occasion, but sometimes loneliness is a consequence of ongoing isolation brought on by busyness, depression, a significant life change — like a move,a breakup, the birth of a child, or some combination of all of the above. Some people’s lives are particularly isolating, especially if they live alone, work remotely, and don’t often interact with others.
On the other hand, too much social interaction can be equally exhausting. An essential aspect of a well-balanced social life is alone time, a chance to recharge, according to research. A teacher who interacts with students and colleagues all day may not have the bandwidth (带宽) to volunteer to lead a birding walk.
Fighting off both loneliness and social exhaustion is a difficult task. Because everyone’s social lives and social desires vary so greatly, researchers are unable to prescribe (开处方) a set amount of interaction for a fulfilled life. Only we can identify our right dose of time spent with others. However, we often aren’t paying enough attention to our interpersonal interactions to determine whether we’ re feeling socially satisfied. It isn’t until we’ re in the depths of loneliness or socially overextended (社交过度) that we realize we need something: a positive talk with a friend, a few chats with a stranger on the bus, or a weekend alone with a good book.
“The really ironic thing is a lot of people don’t have that self-insight. We’ve interacted with people our whole lives — we have friends and we have partners and a lot of what we do every day is talking to other people,” says William Chopik, a social-personality psychologist and an associate professor at Michigan State University. “I don’t think a lot of people sit down and really take stock of the exact amount of social interaction that makes them comfortable.”
Being intentional with your interpersonal contact and maintaining a variety of conversation partners are crucial to supporting a healthy social life. Keeping loneliness at bay requires a nominal (少量的), yet committed, effort: At the end of a day, week, or month, take stock of with whom you socialized, what kinds of interactions you had, and whether you feel emotionally satisfied to get a clearer picture of your social intake.
42. What is the purpose of the third paragraph in the passage?
A. To stress the importance of having a certain amount of alone time.
B. To give an example of a job that involves too much interaction.
C. To suggest a way to balance social interaction and loneliness.
D. To challenge a popular belief that isolation is harmful to our health.
43. Why does William Chopik find it ironic that people lack self-insight when it comes to interaction?
A. Because people tend to go to extremes in social interaction.
B. Because people always ignore what they spend most time on.
C. Because people fail to make meaningful connections with other people.
D. Because people struggle to determine their ideal social interaction amount.
44. According to the passage, how can people maintain a healthy social life?
A. Maintaining a balance between busyness and relaxation.
B. Engaging in activities that require little social interaction.
C. Reflecting on social interactions and emotional satisfaction.
D. Comparing our social interactions with those of others.
45. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. How much social interaction do you actually need?
B. What is the impact and significance of loneliness?
C. What are the strategies for overcoming loneliness?
D. How to balance social interaction and alone time?
【答案】42. A 43. D 44. C 45. A

A teacher who interacts with students and colleagues all day may not have the bandwidth (带宽) to volunteer to lead a birding walk.(另一方面,过多的社交互动同样会令人疲惫。 故选A项。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中““The really ironic thing is a lot of people don’t have that self-insight. We’ve interacted with people our whole lives — we have friends and we have partners and a lot of what we do every day is talking to other people,” says William Chopik, a social-personality psychologist and an associate professor at Michigan State University. “I don’t think a lot of people sit down and really take stock of the exact amount of social interaction that makes them comfortable.”(“真正具有讽刺意味的是,很多人缺乏这种自我洞察力。我们一生都在与人交往——我们有朋友,有伴侣,我们每天做的很多事情就是和别人交谈,”密歇根州立大学社会人格心理学家、副教授William Chopik说。“我认为很多人不会坐下来真正评估让他们感到舒适的社交互动的确切数量。”)”可知,William Chopik认为很多人缺乏自我洞察力,无法确定自己理想的社交互动量,这让他觉得讽刺。故选D项。

【45题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第四段中“Fighting off both loneliness and social exhaustion is a difficult task. Because everyone’s social lives and social desires vary so greatly, researchers are unable to prescribe (开处方) a set amount of interaction for a fulfilled life. Only we can identify our right dose of time spent with others.(既要对抗孤独感,又要避免社交倦怠,确实是项艰难的任务。 故选A项。
卷Ⅱ 主观题(共25分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
I was born legally blind. Of all the stories of my early childhood, the one about a tree is my mother’s favorite.
I was only two when the incident occurred. We had just arrived home from a trip. Mom lifted me out of the car and turned to speak to the driver. I took advantage of my brief freedom to zoom across the lawn and hit a large maple tree! I was running so fast that I bounced off the trunk and landed on my backside. Mom expected me to start crying but I just sat there for a minute. Then I picked myself up and kept right on going. Mom always adds here that, as many times as I zoomed across the lawn after that, I never again crashed into that tree.
Mom loves to use this story as an example. It reminds her that children don’t enter life afraid to take risks or unwilling to try again when they fall down. She never wanted me to lose that toughness as I grew older. When I made my major life decisions, I was still that little girl tearing (飞跑) full-speed across the lawn. I studied abroad and later moved away from my parents’ home to look for a job. Through years of efforts, I have become a respected teacher in a school serving high-need students.
We are almost certain to get knocked down at some point during the process of achieving our goal. When that happens, don’t sit in the grass and cry. Just get up and keep on going. It will all be worth it in the end.

The first-person narrative (叙述) is about a young soldier named Johnnie Rico and his adventurous actions in the Mobile Infantry, a futuristic military unit equipped with powered armor. Having no combat experience himself Heinlein, a former naval (海军的) officer, interviewed infantry soldiers and officers to get the “flavor” of ground combat for his book.

The Years is a personal narrative of the period 1941 to 2006 told through the lens of memory, impressions past and-present and even projections into the future. On its first publication in France the book came as a surprise. Although Annie had, for years, been a beloved best-selling and award-winning author, the book was in many ways a new try: both an intimate memoir (自传) written by entire generations and a story of generations telling a very personal story.

D. By scuffing the ball with sandpaper.
40. What does the second paragraph mainly focus on?

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
