A throne from the ancient Assyria's Shalmaneser Ⅲ in the 9th century BC clearly shows two persons shaking hands. The Homeric Epics(荷马史诗) Iliad, dated back to the 8th century BC, also mentions that two persons“shook each other's hands”. Centuries later,Shakespeare wrote in As You Like It that two persons“shook hands”. It might seem like shaking hands is on old custom, the roots of which are lost to the sands of time. Historians have noticed that shaking hands in the modern times doesn't appear until the mid-19th century, when it was considered as a little improper gesture that should only be used between fr·ends. The origin of the modern handshake as a form of greeting is harder to find. One of the earliest pieces of evidence(证据) is a 16th-century German translation of a French book which mentions shaking hands. There's another piece of evidence for a handshaking tradition at that time: In 1607 the writer James Cleland said that he'd rather shake the two right hands together instead of bowing(弯曲) down to everyone's shoes and kissing hands. As the centuries passed, handshake was replaced by other greeting ways like bowing.According to Roodenburg, handshake survived in remote areas, where they'd use the gesture to reconcile after a fight. Then, the handshake appeared again as a standard greeting way that remains today. Not everyone fell in love with the handshake, however. According to an article from December1884, in France, for example, a society has been recently formed to stop using shake-hands. Why was shaking hands considered as a good way of greeting? The most popular explanation is that it uses the right hand, making it useless for weapon holding. In the 19th century, shaking hands without taking gloves off was quite rude. Sadly, in a world where unknown translations provide only some evidence, the true reason may remain forever unknown. 1. What can we know from Paragraph 1? A. Nothing can show the history of shaking hands. B. The sands have taken away the way of greeting C. The lost time can't be found any more. D. The true reason for shaking hands is lu to find. 2. What's the meaning of the underlined vi“reconcile” in Paragraph 4? A. work together with somebody else B. organize something peaceful C. be friends with each other again D. live a happy life with others 3. Which of the following may be the best title the passage? A. Evidence of handshake becoming a of greeting B. Some greeting manners around the world C. The history of handshake as a way greeting D. A story of handshake as a way of greeting 七、任务型阅读 (2025南京玄武期末) Should books alw be kept in good condition? How do you treat your books? Do you try to fold a page by using a bookmark? Are you care not to make a crease(折痕) on the spine of the be when you open it? Do you store your collect neatly(整齐地) on a shelf? Or perhaps you f less attention to their condition—— you' re happy highlight quotes and paragraphs or scribble(涂写)notes down the margins of a page. You take y(stories with you wherever you go, even if tl means they get a bit dog-eared and damage What's your view—— do you think they should always be kept in good condition? People have been sharing their opinions online about the issue. Yes No Books deserve our respect. It doesn't matter as long as you read. It is important to care for your books. This is especially true if the book costs a lot of money, or was given to you as a present. If you don't look after your books, people might not buy them for you in the future. They also won't last so long if they are damaged. If a book is full of ripped pages, or has a damaged cover, it is less likely that a friend will want to pick it up and read it, so you won't be able to share your favourite stories. If you donate it to a charity shop, it is less likely that someone will buy it. Over time, treating books badly could become a bad habit. If you damage novels that you' ve borrowed from the library or a friend, you might end up with a fine or an upset friend. One of the great things about an actual book is that readers can make it their own with notes. If it's a gift, you can write a nice message. These little scribbles are great to return to and can make a book feel personal and special to you. It doesn't matter if this means that a book isn't in perfect condition—— you can always buy a new copy if the old one gets too damaged. In the end, it should just be about what makes reading a book most enjoyable for each person. Authors just want people to read their stories; they don't mind how or where people do it. If a reader should happen to damage their copy along the way, it doesn't really matter. Topie Should books always be kept in good condition?
