In Alpine, just outside San Diego, the Baker family opened a pizza restaurant with a meaningful mission: creating real jobs for people with special needs. The restaurant, named Pizzabilities, was inspired by their 19-year-old daughter Grace, who has Down syndrome (唐氏综合征) and had difficulty finding jobs. “Finding a job is very hard with someone with special needs,” said Grace’s father, Josh Baker. Rather than accepting that fact, the family decided to do something brave.
With no previous restaurant experience, the Bakers asked a simple question: What does Grace love? The answer was clear: Pizza and people. That idea became Pizzabilities, which opened last summer and is now doing well. Grace is not just an employee (员工) — she’s a co-owner. At the restaurant, she proudly helps make pizzas.
The impact has gone far beyond their own family. According to Grace’s mother, the response from job seekers with special needs has been great. So many people have applied. For Josh Baker, the most powerful moments come during the hiring process. “Tears just start flowing when the kids say, ‘You mean I am really hired?’” he shared, “Then you look at their families, and they’re crying because they see their kid get to have a chance like the rest of us.”
Customers keep coming back too — not just because of the mission, but because the pizza itself delivers. One customer said he originally stopped by to support the cause, but stayed loyal because of how good the food was.
Looking ahead, the Bakers have big dreams. They hope to open hundreds of Pizzabilities across the United States — and possibly beyond. Their message is summed up in the restaurant’s motto, printed on the back of every employee’s shirt: “Where pizzas and abilities rise together.”
4. Why did the Bakers open Pizzabilities?
A. To make the best pizza in Alpine. B. To earn more money for their family.
C. To offer jobs to people with special needs. D. To help Grace become a successful cook.
5. How do the families of the new employees feel?
A. Confident in their kids’ cooking. B. Moved by their kids’ getting a job.

A. Favorable. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested.
7. What does the restaurant’s motto imply?
A. Bigger pizza restaurants and future dream. B. More pizza makers and helpful customers.
C. Quick increase of Pizza sales and high profit. D. Joint rise of pizza quality and personal abilities.

On July 11, 2025, Architectural Digest published a feature (专题) by Rosa Jisoo Pyo, shining a spotlight on Labubu dolls. The playful dolls quickly became popular, popping up all over the world. Interestingly, people love these special items just as much as they admire expensive artworks that cost millions of dollars.
Labubu was first made by Kasing Lung, a Hong Kong-Belgian artist. He first drew this naughty woodland creature in his storybooks. In 2019, Lung worked with Pop Mart, a big Chinese toy company, but it was not until then that Labubu became famous globally. With its messy hair, sharp teeth and special mix of elf and rabbit looks, Labubu was different from the traditional “cute” items. It had a “ugly-cute” style—lovely but a bit cool. Surprisingly, its core collectors are not children but young adults aged 18 to 35. They view Labubu as something showing their taste and who they are, rather than just a toy.
The “blind box” way of selling is a big reason for Labubu’s great popularity. Many collectors say opening a sealed box is really exciting. Studies show this uncertainty encourages people to buy things without thinking twice, as it sparks curiosity and the desire for being lucky—especially for rare designs. For fans, collecting Labubu is more than buying; it becomes a special ritual (仪式) and a source of pride. They decorate the dolls, take nice photos and share their collections online.
Labubu’s prices vary a lot. A normal blind-box toy costs about $15-$20, but limited editions or oversized ones can sell for hundreds. The most amazing sale was in 2024: a 4-foot-tall mint-green Big Labubu was sold at auction (拍卖) for $170,000 to an unknown Chinese customer. This sky-high price surprised fans and proved Labubu is a real modern art piece, just like famous toys by KAWS or Bearbrick. Beyond being a mere product, Labubu has become an important part of a cultural moment.
8. What is a key reason for Labubu to attract adult collectors?
A. Its traditional and cute design. B. Its fair and inexpensive price.
C. Its expression of taste and true selves. D. Its connection to childhood stories.
9. How does the “blind box” sales model make Labubu popular?
A. It greatly reduces Labubu’s cost. B. It creates uncertainty to arouse curiosity.
C. It allows the choosing of favorite styles. D. It offers a chance to make quick money.
10. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. Limited-edition toys are much less valuable.
B. Blind boxes can make common toys expensive.
C. Labubu dolls are recognized as modern artworks.
D. Chinese collectors are glad to spend more on toys.
11. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Labubu: From Cute to Uniquely Ugly-Cute.
B. Labubu: From Storybook to Cultural Bridge.
C. Labubu: An affordable Collection for Everyone.
D. Labubu: A Global Collection Craze among Adults.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是拉布布(Labubu)玩偶从故事书角色发展成为全球范围内受成年收藏者热烈追捧的文化现象。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“They view Labubu as something showing their taste and who they are, rather than just a toy.(他们将拉布布视为展现自己品味和个性的象征,而不仅仅是一个玩具。)”可知,拉布布吸引成年收藏者的关键原因是它能展现品味和真实的自我。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The “blind box” way of selling is a big reason for Labubu’s great popularity. Many collectors say opening a sealed box is really exciting.(“盲盒”的销售方式是拉布布大受欢迎的重要原因。许多收藏者表示,打开密封盒子的过程非常令人兴奋。)”可知,“盲盒”销售模式制造了不确定性以激发好奇心,从而让拉布布受欢迎的。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“This sky-high price surprised fans and proved Labubu is a real modern art piece, just like famous toys by KAWS or Bearbrick.(这一天价令粉丝们惊叹不已,也证明了拉布布如同KAWS或Bearbrick等著名玩具一样,是一件真正的现代艺术品。)”可知,从第四段我们能了解到拉布布玩偶被公认为现代艺术品。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Interestingly, people love these special items just as much as they admire expensive artworks that cost millions of dollars.(有趣的是,人们对这些特别物品的喜爱程度,丝毫不亚于对价值数百万美元的昂贵艺术品的欣赏。)”
D
From hotter summers to more frequent floods, warming weather is affecting our lives in every way. For animals, however, it’s not just their living environment that’s in danger, but their very existence. Many beloved animals, including penguins and elephants, are at risk of disappearing because of climate change.
A study published on March 7 used fossils (化石) from sea creatures to find out which animals are most vulnerable as our planet’s climate continues to change.
Carried out by the University of Oxford, the study found that the size has a great effect on their extinction because they use up their energy quickly. They need lots of food to stay alive. Unfortunately, small animals often live in narrow or limited spaces. Furthermore, small animals usually don’t live as long as larger ones, making them easily influenced by factors that might cause their extinction.
Another problem is that small animals generally don’t travel far, so if their home is disturbed, or if new dangers threaten it, it may be hard for them to find new homes, or enough for them to survive. What’s worse, small animals often have more babies, which means it’s harder for them to ensure the safety of their children. In other words, they are at more risk of going extinct, according to the study.
Besides small animals, those living in extreme heat or cold — such as the poles (地极) — face more threats. These areas experience great climate changes, making life harder for species already dealing with tough conditions. As climate change gets worse, these extreme environments change more quickly, bringing more danger to the animals there.
This study offers important information on protecting wildlife as the world warms. “Knowing which creatures are most at risk is very important for planning how to protect them,” commented Earth. org. By focusing on the most at-risk species, conservationists (环境保护主义者) can do their work better, use limited resources well and improve the chances of keeping biodiversity alive despite environmental challenges.
12. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. likely to be harmed. B. Difficult to be affected.
C. Possible to be forgotten. D. Unnecessary to be protected.
13. Why are smaller animals more likely to die out?
A. More enemies and less places to hide.
B. Short life period and little need for food.
C. Easy destruction of habitats and slow growth.
D. High energy burning and inability to move far.
14. What can we infer about the species in areas with extreme weathers?
A. Their survival chances are likely to decrease.
B. They might move to safer environments over time.
C Their population will experience a sharp reduction.
D. They may gradually adapt to the changing conditions.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To explain a research method. B. To introduce the findings of a study.
C. To show conservationists’ difficulties. D. To stress the value of wildlife protection.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. A 15. B

【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段“For animals, however, it’s not just their living environment that’s in danger, but their very existence. Many beloved animals, including penguins and elephants, are at risk of disappearing because of climate change.(然而,对于动物而言,不仅它们的生存环境岌岌可危,就连它们的存在本身也面临着威胁。由于气候变化,许多深受人们喜爱的动物,包括企鹅和大象,都面临着消失的风险。)”和第二段“as our planet’s climate continues to change(随着地球气候持续变化)”可知,划线词所在句子表示“随着地球气候持续变化,哪些动物最为脆弱”,vulnerable的意思是“脆弱的,容易受到伤害的”,和likely to be harmed意思相近。故选A。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Carried out by the University of Oxford, the study found that the size has a great effect on their extinction because they use up their energy quickly.(这项由牛津大学开展的研究发现,动物的体型大小对其灭绝有着重大影响,因为小型动物消耗能量的速度很快。)”和第四段“Another problem is that small animals generally don’t travel far, so if their home is disturbed, or if new dangers threaten it, it may be hard for them to find new homes, or enough for them to survive.(另一个问题是,小型动物通常不会远行,因此,如果它们的栖息地受到干扰,或者面临新的威胁,它们可能很难找到新的栖息地,或者找到足够维持生存的资源。)”可知,小型动物更容易灭绝是因为它们能量消耗大,无法跑很远。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“These areas experience great climate changes, making life harder for species already dealing with tough conditions. As climate change gets worse, these extreme environments change more quickly, bringing more danger to the animals there.(这些地区的气候变化剧烈,使得那些已经在艰难环境中生存的物种的生活更加艰难。随着气候变化的加剧,这些极端环境的变化速度更快,给那里的动物带来了更多的危险。)”可知,生活在极端气候地区的物种的生存几率可能会降低。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“A study published on March 7 used fossils (化石) from sea creatures to find out which animals are most vulnerable as our planet’s climate continues to change.(3月7日发表的一项研究利用海洋生物的化石,来探究随着地球气候持续变化,哪些动物最为脆弱。)”可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是介绍一项研究的发现。故选B。

C. Curious about the restaurant’s mission. D. Satisfied with the restaurant’s service.
6. Which of the following best describes customers’ attitude towards Pizzabilities?
A. Favorable. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful.

A. It greatly reduces Labubu’s cost. B. It creates uncertainty to arouse curiosity.
C. It allows the choosing of favorite styles. D. It offers a chance to make quick money.

B They might move to safer environments over time.
C. Their population will experience a sharp reduction.
D They may gradually adapt to the changing conditions.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To explain a research method. B. To introduce the findings of a study.
C. To show conservationists’ difficulties. D. To stress the value of wildlife protection.
