Would you rather live where it snows in winter or enjoy warm sunshine all year round? Some people prefer sunny weather. They think cold winters can be hard- short days make them sleepy and sad. The cold makes them stay inside, exercise less, and get sick easily. However, people in cold places find fun ways to enjoy winter!
In Harbin, China, the Snow and Ice Festival starts in January and lasts until March. Artists cut ice from the Songhua River and build tall sculptures (雕塑) that are lit with colorful lights. By late December, visitors come to see this icy world filled with ice artworks and shining buildings. The beauty surprises them although it’s very cold!
In Quebec, Canada, there’s an amazing Ice Hotel that is made of 2,300 ice blocks and 15,000 tons of snow! People love staying in its icy rooms for a special winter experience.
Even kids in Sweden can enjoy making snow lanterns called Snolykta. They first make large snowballs, and then put candles inside to create warm lights. These simple lanterns light up the dark winter nights.
These creative traditions show how people turn cold winter challenges into beauty and joy! With imagination, they make winter fun for everyone. Although it’s cold, there are so many fun ways to enjoy this special season.

Born in a small village, I saw how busy farmers were in spring, and what the season meant to them. Spring is a time when the land wakes up from its long sleep, and the fields are ready for crops (庄稼). If you are lazy in spring, you will get nothing in autumn. So, farmers seem to compete with time in spring.
When I was a little girl, every weekend I was busy planting crops. Whatever it was, I had fun and learned a lot. For example, when we planted potatoes, we needed to cut the sprouted (发芽的) potatoes into pieces and made sure every piece of “seed” (种子) had one or two sprouts. It was really like a math game.
Farm work is also teamwork. That’s why every spring field is busy with people of all ages working in it. While planting beans, my father dug small holes, and I carefully put some seeds into each hole. The work was hard and boring, but when we worked together, it seemed easier and more interesting.
I felt magic of life in spring as well. In a few weeks, the seeds sprouted, encouraging us to care for them by watering and so on. As time went by, they grew into healthy plants.
Because of these wonderful childhood experiences, I hold such a special feeling for spring.

Confucius and The Analects
The Analects is a famous book in Chinese history. It was written by Confucius’ students and records the words and thoughts of Confucius. This book teaches us how to be good people, how to study, and how to behave towards others. Even today, many of its ideas are still useful in our daily lives. Here are some key lessons from this great book.
Learn with a joyful attitude. Confucius believed that having the right attitude is the most important part of learning. He said that people who simply know something are not as good as those who like it, and people who like it are not as good as those who enjoy it. When we find joy in studying, we don’t feel tired.
Review old knowledge to discover new ideas. Good students often look back at what they have learned. By reviewing old lessons, we can understand them better and even find new meanings. This is a sign of a true master.
Think while you study. Studying and thinking must go together. If we only study without thinking, we will be confused. If we only think without studying, we will be in danger of failing. We must do both to succeed.
Be honest about what you know. A wise person is honest. If you know something, say you know it. If you don’t know, admit that you don’t. This is the real way to gain knowledge.
Never give up your dream. Even if a country loses its army and leader, an ordinary person should never lose their dream or goal. We must be strong and protect our hopes and ambitions.

Sayings are used every day. You may ask an unhappy friend why she’s “feeling blue”. If you’ve done only a small part of a big job, you might call it “a drop (滴) in the bucket (桶)”. These sayings don’t mean exactly what the words say. But it’s easy to tell why we use them. Blue is a cool, quiet color. So it’s a good word for “sad”. A bucket holds too many drops of water to count. So just one drop is very little.
Other sayings are more difficult to understand. When you are about to go to bed, you are going to “hit the hay (干草)”. This saying does not make much sense unless you know where it came from. It was first used in the 1930s. At that time, many Americans were out of work. Some went from place to place, looking for jobs. At night they were very tired. They often made a bed of hay in a field or barn (谷仓). As soon as their heads “hit the hay”, they fell asleep.
Here is another saying. When you are sick, you might say you are “under the weather”. But why? This saying is more than 200 years old. It began in the days when many people went from place to place by boat. When storm winds rocked the boat, people often felt sick. The boat was sailing (航行) “under the weather”.
Young kids may find old sayings like these hard to understand, and old people may also have difficulty understanding new sayings. That’s why a grandma might not know what you mean by saying “give me five”. She might think you’re “off your rocker” which means “out of your mind”. It seems that the sayings are also changing with the development of living conditions.

Ten years ago, most of the work at Qingdao Port (港口) was done by people, which led to low efficiency (效率) and high safety risks. Luckily, an expert on automation (自动化) called Zhang Liangang solved this problem. He won the 2023 “Touching China” award on April 8th, 2024.
Zhang studied automatic control in college. “I chose to study it because our country had been left behind in this field,” he said. “My classmates and I chose it to help meet our country’s needs.”
After graduation in 1983, Zhang worked at Qingdao Port. Looking at the way of working at Qingdao Port, he decided to change it. When the port decided to build an automatic port in 1984, Zhang joined without thinking. In 2013, although he didn’t get well from a serious illness, he accepted the task of leading a team to build a fully automatic port.
“It had always been our dream to build a fully automatic port,” he said. “If we could make it, it would be better for my health than medicine.” Zhang and his team spent 15 months working day and night to complete the design (设计) of an automatic port.

Have you ever experienced buddy (同伴) reading? It allows you and a friend to read and share the same book together. It may take the buddies time to do many reading activities, but it’s a wonderful experience. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also helps you have a better understanding of the books.
It is all right to have students take part in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates, but schools usually pair up (配对) older students with younger ones. Yucai School started such a program in 2022 and has achieved great success.
Thanks to the two-year program, many students from younger to older readers have learned a lot. For example, they learned to be kind and patient when they listened to each other. This experience also makes students get a chance to practice lifelong skills such as communicating with others. A student called Davis said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more and more confident, as he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt closer as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.

These days, the robotaxi (自动驾驶出租车) from the company Baidu’s Apollo Go becomes quite popular. People can call the taxi using an app on their phone. There is no driver in the car but it can take you anywhere you want to go. Many people try the new way to travel around. They think it is cheap, comfortable and interesting.

In the first lesson, the coach said, “Rock climbing requires strength (力量), speed, skill, courage and persistence (坚持). All these are necessary to help improve your ability.” But in my opinion, rock climbing was just a fun activity. It interested me.
During the rest of the classes, the coach asked us to run 800 meters first, and then climb with a rope. When I finished running, I felt tired and almost lost my breath and did not even want to touch the rope. I thought it was not so interesting as before.

2.Confucius thought that is more important than any other part of learning. (No more than 5 words.)
3.What happens if we only think but do not study? (No more than 7 words.)

Situation
Confucius’ Advice
You want to discover new ideas.
You should and think deeply.
You want to know how to be a wise person.
You should be in your studies.
5.Which piece of advice from The Analects do you think is the most helpful for your exams? Why? (No more than 25 words.)

The UTMB (环勃朗峰超级越野耐力赛) is one of the world’s most famous trail running (越野跑) events, taking place every year in the beautiful Mont-Blanc area, covering parts of France, Italy, and Switzerland. In 2024, Yao Miao completed a 50-km race. Yao Miao made history as the first Chinese woman to win the 50-km race at the famous UTMB.This adds to her earlier success in 2018, when she became the first Chinese woman to win the 100-km race at the UTMB.
Yao’s love for running began in her childhood in the countryside of Guizhou. Her school was four kilometers from home, and she walked four times a day. Growing up in the mountains can give somebody a strong mind. The strong mind later helped her as a runner. In 2019, Yao joined the Hubei Team as a professional runner. She was later accepted into Central China Normal University in 2020. Balancing (平衡) training with her studies, Yao trained in Yunnan, running about 30 kilometers a day. In her free time, she took online courses. Though she didn’t have much time to visit the university, Yao said, “When I have time, I will fully enjoy visiting the schoolyard.”
