Huang was born in Tainan in 1963, but his father’s work took the family to Thailand when he was a child. Then, when Huang was 9, his parents sent him and his brother to the United States due to political tensions in Thailand. Unexpectedly, Huang was sent to a reform school for troubled youth. This may not sound beneficial, but Huang appreciated it. He says, “We worked really hard, and the kids were really tough.” The toughness and work ethic (道德) he developed have served him well. After graduating from college, Huang earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering. While being a student, he worked as a waiter. Before he took the job, he was very shy, but waiting tables forced him to speak to people. That helped him to get over his shyness. He also learned the importance of admitting mistakes. On his 30th birthday, Huang and two engineering friends founded his company, NVIDIA. They thought it was likely that computers would soon need more powerful technology to display graphics (图像).So NVIDIA produced such hardware: the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) in 1999.The first application of this technology was to video games, but it has also been used in other areas. Recently, GPUs have played a key role in the development of AI. Huang’s success is attributed to a number of factors including hard work and refusal to give up. But the most important characteristic is his willingness to take risks and learn from failure. This requires humility (谦逊) and honesty, which enables him to recognize and correct mistakes. Huang encourages these attitudes in his employees, which are partly responsible for the company’s success. Today, at the age of 62, Huang is the longest-serving CEO of a major technology company. He does not intend to stop anytime soon. 4. How did Huang react to being admitted to a reform school? A. He was shocked at first but settled for it. B. He took it seriously and made full use of it. C. He set a goal to get prepared for his tech career. D. He regretted the reform school but didn’t say so. 5. Why did Huang and his friends decide to develop the GPU? A. Because video game companies placed a large order of it. B. Because AI was in great need of the hardware at that time. C. Because stronger graphics hardware might be needed soon. D. Because no other groups were developing similar technology, 6. Which may replace the underlined part “attributed to” in paragraph 6? A. due to B. essential to C. identical to D. compared to 7. What is the text mainly about? A. GPU technology’s invention and wide application. B. Huang’s experiences and qualities leading to his success. C. Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes. “We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.” According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted (厌恶的), angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies. It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.” In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified (多样化) these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation. 8. The discovery shows that Westerners ________. A. consider facial expressions universally reliable B. observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways C. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions D. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth 9. What were the people asked to do in the study? A. To classify some face pictures. B. To make a face at each other. C. To get their faces impressive. D. To observe the researchers’ faces. 10. What key weakness might critics highlight about the study’s design? A. Dependence on subjective emotion categorization. B. Lack of more diverse American cultural groups. C. Use of posed photos instead of natural expressions. D. Failure to track eye movements during observation. 11. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions B. The Eye as the Window to the Soul C. Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills D. How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding 【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第三段中“Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.(西方人会同等地关注眼睛和嘴巴,而东方人更关注眼睛,忽视嘴巴)”可知,西方人对眼睛和嘴巴给予同等的关注。 根据第五段中“The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral.(研究人员记录了13名西方白人和13名东亚人的眼球运动,这些受试者观察带有表情的面部照片并将其分类为开心、悲伤、惊讶、恐惧、厌恶、愤怒或中性,以此研究面部表情识别中的文化差异)”可知,研究中受试者被要求对一些面部照片进行分类。故选A。 根据第一段中“People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.(东亚人比欧洲人更难分辨面部表情,《当代生物学》在线发表的一份新报告解释了原因)”以及全文围绕东西方人识别面部表情的文化差异展开分析可知,本文核心是讲述解读情绪时的文化差异。A选项“Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions(解读情感的文化差异)”最适合作为标题。故选A。 D Advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled authentic-sounding speech synthesis (语音合成) to the point that a person can no longer distinguish whether they are talking to another human or a deepfake (深度伪造). If a person’s own voice is “cloned” by a third party without their agreement, bad guys can use it to send any message they want. Computer scientist and engineer Ning Zhang has developed a new method to prevent unauthorized speech synthesis before it takes place: a tool called AntiFake. Traditional deepfake detection methods only work after the damage is done. However, AntiFake prevents voice data from being synthesized into an audio deepfake beforehand. This tool turns the tables on cybercriminals (网络罪犯) by using similar voice cloning techniques they employ, but for voice protection. The software complicates voice data extraction and feature identification crucial for voice synthesis. “We’re using an opposite AI technique originally used by cybercriminals, but now we’re using it against them,” Zhang explained. “We slightly change the recorded audio, just enough to make it unusable for voice clone training while still sounding natural to humans.” Ben Zhao, a professor of computer science at University of Chicago, says that the software, like all digital security systems, will never provide complete protection. But, he adds that it can raise the bar and limit the attack to a smaller group of individuals with significant resources. AntiFake can already protect shorter voice recordings against cloning. The creators of the tool believe that it could be extended to protect larger audio documents or music from misuse. But the methods and tools that are developed must be continuously adapted because cybercriminals will learn and grow with them. 12. What is the primary purpose of AntiFake? A. To improve the quality of synthetic speech. B. To clone voices without the owner’s approval. C. To detect deepfakes after they have been created. D. To stop unapproved speech generation from happening. 13. How does AntiFake differ from these traditional methods? A. It prevents audio deepfakes in advance. B. It cannot detect deepfakes until created. C. It only works on short voice recordings. D. It relies on human listeners to identify deepfakes. 14. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Developers should focus on short voice recordings. B. The battle against deepfakes requires ongoing efforts. C. AntiFake is ineffective against advanced cloning techniques. D. AntiFake provides permanent solutions to the deepfake threat. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. The Future of Voice Technology. B. A Method for Detecting AI Deepfakes. C. The Challenge of Telling Human Voices. D. A Tool to Keep AI from Stealing Your Voice. D 13. A 14. B 15. 通读全文,尤其是由文章第二段“Computer scientist and engineer Ning Zhang has developed a new method to prevent unauthorized speech synthesis before it takes place: a tool called AntiFake. Green Travel: More Than a Trend Many people assume sustainable (可持续的) travel requires grand gestures like carbon offset or expensive eco-hotels. Yet true green travel is built through simple, daily choices that collectively protect our planet. ____16____ Choosing slow transportation. The heart of green travel lies in embracing (拥抱) slower journeys. A traveler opts for a train instead of a flight between cities, enjoying landscapes while reducing emissions (排放). It might not seem heroic, but it reflects the wisdom that lasting impact comes from consistent, small acts. Like a forest growing silently over centuries, these choices build up into a healthier planet. ____17____ They understood that harmony with nature is the highest form of travel. Respecting local ecosystems. ____18____ When a hiker carries back all trash from a mountain trail, or a diver avoids touching coral reefs, they preserve beauty with care. This mirrors the ecological principle of “leave no trace”— protection over intervention. True respect isn’t just about following rules; it focuses on a mindset where nature grows. ____19____ Thoughtful consumption creates waves of change. A tourist buys a handmade souvenir from a local artisan instead of a factory-made item. A family chooses a restaurant serving locally sourced food. Supporting communities that depend on sustainable practices reinforces a cycle of care. Such kindness to the Earth never goes unnoticed—it becomes the wealth we leave for future generations. Traveling light and smart. In an era of overconsumption, packing minimally is a revolutionary act. A backpacker brings reusable bottles and containers, refusing single-use plastics. A hotel guest reuses towels and turns off lights when leaving. To some, these may seem inconvenient, but they are significant investments in our planet’s future. ____20____ A. Reducing waste consciously. B. Supporting local communities. C. Once polluted, ecosystems take decades to recover. D. Traditional cultures long practiced sustainable living. E. It is because every small action defends an easily-broken world. F. Here are practical ways to travel greener and gain rewarding experiences. G. Respecting nature doesn’t limit your adventure — it deepens your connection. 16. F 17. D 18. G 19. B 20. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me. One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白的) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl. I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.” “But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.” My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled. Paragraph 1 “But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as usual. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 After the play, I took home the flower. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1 “But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as usual. “You just haven’t been ready for the stage performance.” Seeing the sadness on my face soften a little, she added, “Why not take the narrator’s part as an opportunity to be familiar with the stage?” Her encouragement calmed me down gradually, and I began to accept the narrator’s part was of vital significance. Soon it was the big day. At first I was still nervous, but then I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, hoping it would be my lucky charm. Paragraph 2 After the play, I took home the flower. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently pressed it into the dictionary and grinned happily at me. “We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.” Though decades have passed, I often recall our walk in the yard. Her smile and her words of wisdom have stayed with me and shaped me into who I am now! And this is perhaps the best gift that I’ve ever received in my life. 做好准备:be ready for / make preparations for ②发现:find / spot ③凝视:gaze at / stare at 情绪类 ①让某人冷静下来:calm sb. down / cool sb. down ②紧张的:nervous / tense ③高兴地:happily / with delight 【点睛】[高分句型1]. B Jensen Huang has worked hard, overcome challenges and used his life experiences to build one of the most important tech companies. C. NVIDIA’s development and impact on the tech industry. D. The significance of hard work and risk-taking for a firm. C People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why. How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding D Advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled authentic-sounding speech synthesis (语音合成) to the point that a person can no longer distinguish whether they are talking to another human or a deepfake (深度伪造). D. Grace is an average young girl in the class. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
