Mathilde Wittock,a designer from Belgium, has found a creative way to make resting chairs
without any wood or plastic.Instead, each of her chairs is carefully made up of 500 old tennis.
balls, making them not only eye-catching but surprisingly strong enough to support adults.
Big tennis events around the world use a large number of balls, like the U.S.Open with
70,000 and Wimbledon with 55,000.Yet a tennis ball's life is short, lasting only about nine games.
Each year, around 300 million tennis balls are produced and almost all of them end up in landfills
(垃圾填埋场).Worse still, they take over4o0 years to decompose because their rubber and felt
materials don't break down easily.Wittock hopes her work can help protect the environment.
To make her chairs,Wittock receives most of her materials from local tennis clubs, which are
happy to give away used balls.Creating one chair takes her three to four weeks of careful work.
To make each piece special, she cuts and paints the tennis balls by hand, matching colors to her
customers'rooms. This process requires lots of patience, but the result is a chair that's both
comfortable to sit on and a conversation starter.
For Wittock, though, creating the chair is just the first step. What matters most to her is to
make sure the chair has a "second life"when it's no longer used. She takes old chairs apart and
recycles every tennis ball:the fuzz()is burned off,and the rubber is cut into small pieces to
make bouncy mats (for kids'playgrounds. In this way, nothing goes to waste.
8.What's special about Mathilde Wittock's resting chairs?
A.People can't see the wood in them.
B.They are made of used tennis balls.
C.People can only buy them in Belgium.
D.They are too beautiful to be seated on.
9.What does the underlined word "decompose'in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.To become chairs.
B.To wash away the landfills
C.To grow from land.
D.To divide into smaller parts
10.What is true about Mathilde Wittock making chairs?
A.She doesn't have enough balls.
B.She makes chairs for tennis clubs.
C.She makes chairs all by hand.
D.She meets customers'different needs.
11.What's the last paragraph mainly about?
A.How to keep on cutting down waste.
B.How to make tennis balls into mats.
C.How to improve the design of chairs.
D.How to take tennis balls apart quickly.

All around the world there are small changes taking place. At the side of roads, behind school
playgrounds and on all kinds of unloved pieces of land across towns and cities.tiny forests in the
size of an area for playing tennis are appearing. They are becoming great places for both wildlife
and local people to get close to nature. This is the Tiny Forests movement. It hopes to show that
best things in life really come in small actions.
Tiny Forests first appeared as an idea in the 1970s by Dr Miyawaki,a Japanese botanist(
)As he went on to share the idea with others,it soon took ofr'in many places in India and
other Asian countries before finally reaching Europe, where it became popular. So how does it
work?Louise Hartley, who is leading the Tiny Forest project in the UK,explains that the process
begins with areas in which a tiny forest could have the biggest influence. The movement focuses
on cities where getting close to nature is not very easy."We see it as a chance to try to break the
growing disconnect between people and nature,"says Hartley
In a Tiny Forest, there must be at least 600 trees, and trees are planted much closer together
and without chemical fertilizers )There are usually around 30 different kinds of trees
from the local area. This can help make sure that tiny forests grow up to ten times faster than other
forests.
It's thought that Tiny Forest could help reduce the risk of flooding.remove carbon (from
the air and fight climate change. It is even said to be useful iw/improving the health of the local
people.
Now more and more countries are considering becoming part of the movement, which means
more tiny forests will appear soon.
