【中考真题】
Animals use senses to find food and stay out of danger. People use them to find out what is happening with their bodies and in the world around them. You probably know about the five basic senses: hearing, seeing, smell, touch and taste. 1
Pain Sense
Pain might be regarded as part of the sense of touch. Actually, it isn’t. People and other animals can feel pain even when nothing is touching them. 2 It can also warm people to stop or change what they are doing before they get hurt.
Temperature Sense
People can sense the changes in temperature. In winter, many old people move from the cold place to the warm place. The same thing happens to animals. 3 So they have the habit of winter sleep.
Time Sense
Scientists think humans have the best sense of time. But probably other animals sense it, too. For example, dogs will wait at the door at a certain time. 4
Using Sounds to “See”
Some animals can “see” the things around them in the dark. 5 By making sounds and listening to echoes (回声), some whales and birds have this unusual sense.
In a word, many other senses are also being studied besides the senses above. As you explore the world, think about the other senses that animals, including you, use every day.

Can you imagine what the human body in the future will be like? Our class had a discussion about it. Tiantian, an AI (artificial intelligence人工智能) robot, also joined us. Here are our guesses.
1 Humans are now ten centimeters (厘米) taller than 150 years ago. So, in the future, people will probably be even taller. Why? Because most of us today have much better food than those in the past.
You must say that people will be stronger according to the first guess. 2 With the development of science and technology, we won’t have much physical work to do. If people get used to this kind of lifestyle, we will probably lose most of our muscles (肌肉).
Next, let’s come to our hands and feet. We are already using our feet less, and our hands more. 3 At the same time, our fingers and our eyes will both get better because they’ll have to do more work together.
Here comes the most interesting one—it’s very possible that people will have four toes (脚趾), not five. The little toe really isn’t needed anymore. 4 Let’s wait and see.
Last but not least—people won’t have as much hair on their bodies as now, since we don’t need it to keep ourselves warm.
What do you think of our guesses? 5 With the rise of AI, will we lose the ability of thinking independently?
阅读短文,把A~E五个句子填入文中空缺处,使短文内容完整。
A.But you’re wrong.
B.Will all these things happen?
C.Let’s start with people’s height.

Choosing a job—something you’re thinking of doing for the rest of your working life—isn’t always easy but necessary. Plans for your future job will have a great influence on your whole life. 1
Know yourself well.
It’s true that things like pay are important, but don’t let money lead you in the wrong direction. Firstly, follow your heart and your personality—if you’re not very outgoing, don’t go for a sales job, even if the pay’s good. 2 If you do well in getting along with children, to be a teacher may be a fantastic choice.
3
Generally speaking, people get more satisfaction out of their jobs if they feel they are doing something valuable for others. It doesn’t have to be charity work—it could be a job that helps other people, like being a cleaner. Just imagine what our city would be like without cleaners?
Your first decision isn’t forever.
Some lucky people get it right first time—they choose a job, find they love it and stick at it. 4 So remember—you’re allowed to change your mind! There’s no need to let it worry you for years: maybe you’ve got three or four possible things you’d like to do, so come to a decision and try one—and if you don’t like it, try another one.

Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
Since the Warring States Period (战国时代), the ancient people loved sweets and developed some ways of producing sugar. 1 Then it became popular and went into common people’s homes. In Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. When it came to the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar. 2
Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a table as the “paper”. 3 Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup “up, down, left and right”. Soon a sugar painting is done.
4 The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, few people would like to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. 5 Through it, we may see the hard work and wisdom (智慧) of ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. It’s a national treasure to be remembered, loved and passed on.

1 Now, many cities are already very crowded. So, in the future, cities will probably be more crowded. Why? Because the world’s population is still growing.

Here comes the most interesting one—it’s very possible that cities will have floating districts (悬浮街区) above the ground. Traffic jams on the ground will be reduced a lot. 4 Let’s wait and see.

Fried duck doesn’t taste as good as fried chicken
On the menus of fast-food restaurants, there always seem to be many fried chicken dishes. But have you wondered why there is no fried duck? Is it because 1 ? The right answer is yes. Although chickens and ducks are both raised for meat, they are very different.
Ducks live in places with lots of water. This makes it easier for bacteria (细菌) to grow. To keep themselves safe from these things, ducks have special genes (基因). 2 . That’s why duck meat has much more fat than chicken meat. Chicken meat usually has 6.7% fat, but duck meat has about 19.7%.
3 Because of so much fat, the meat soaks (吸收) up more oil when it’s fried. Also, duck meat has thicker threads (fibers) and less water. So when you fry it, it tastes very dry. These two problems make fried duck much less popular than fried chicken.
Another reason is about smell. 4 . Near a duck’s tail, there is a part that makes oil to keep it warm. This oil smells like sheep meat. When the duck is fried, this smell becomes unpleasant. Even if you take away the oil, some of the smell may still stay in the meat.
Some people may think it’s about cost, but 5 . The real reasons are all about taste and smell—these are the most important things for people when they choose fast food.

When you use a knife and fork, you have to take the knife with your right hand and the fork with your left hand, or you can’t put food into your mouth. But with chopsticks, you can solve the eating problems with just one hand. 1
Chopsticks were called zhu or jia in ancient China. It is said that they were invented by Da Yu, who successfully controlled the heavy flood. One day he was busy dealing with the flood. In order to save time when eating, he used two sticks from a tree to take the hot food. That was how chopsticks came into use. 2
In fact, the earliest chopsticks found in China were made of bronze (青铜), which were unearthed from Yinxu in Anyang City, Henan Province.
Many people probably haven’t realized the cultural meaning of chopsticks. 3 Do you notice that one end of the chopstick is square and the other end is round? So, why?
