Some people think recycling helps protect the environment. But others think reducing (减少) waste is a better way to protect the Earth. What do you think? Is reducing waste better than recycling?
Ben
Yes—Reducing waste is best for the Earth!
Do you know that not all recycling works well? In the UK, only two-thirds of the things in recycling bins get recycled. If people put things that don’t belong in the recycling bins, it causes problems.
We need to recycle better, but it’s important to make less waste. When we go shopping in the supermarket, we can bring our own bags. Reducing waste can be fun, like exchanging toys with friends. It costs nothing but goes a long way to protect the Earth.
Alan
No—It’s very important to recycle.
Because of recycling, about 46% of the UK’s rubbish does not go to landfills (填埋场). So we should encourage people to recycle even more. Reducing waste is important, but recycling plays a more important role in helping the planet.
If we recycle, we need to take less from the Earth. It saves our forests and water. Recycling is here to stay!
26. What does Ben think is best to protect the Earth?

27. Which country are Ben’s and Alan’s examples from?
A. China. B. The US. C. The UK. D. France.

B. Because it saves forests and water.
C. Because it calls on us to plant more trees.
D. Because it encourages us to take more from the Earth.

Mother’s Day is a special time to thank mothers for their love and care. In Australia, people often give chrysanthemums (菊花) as a gift. They are more common than chocolate or cards. These bright flowers have become a symbol of the day.
Why chrysanthemums? The story goes back more than 100 years. In the early 1900s, a group of women in Sydney sold these flowers to raise money for charity (慈善). The idea quickly became popular, and soon the flowers were the most popular gift for Mother’s Day.
There is another reason why people like them so much. The word “chrysanthemum” has “mum” in it. This is special because Australians call their mothers “Mum”. The flower’s name fits the day perfectly. In Australia, chrysanthemums flower in May. Mother’s Day is also in May, so they are perfect gifts.
Around the world, chrysanthemums tell different stories. In China, these flowers are connected with autumn and quiet strength (力量). In Australia, they shine as the flower of Mother’s Day. The same flower can mean different things in different places. This is because our culture influences how we see everything.

Talk to your parents clearly and kindly. It’s important to tell your parents what you think and feel. Don’t get mad. Just tell your parents why you need some time alone. At the same time, show them that you’re ready. Try to finish homework on time and help out around the house. These will show them you are responsible, and they will probably give you more space. Zhang Tanhao loves Peking Opera (京剧). Because of this love, he decided to work with his friends to turn a famous Chinese cartoon, Hulu Xiao Jin Gang, into a Peking Opera show.
Zhang’s love for Peking Opera began in high school. At that time, he showed an interest in gu feng music. It mixes traditional Chinese singing with pop. “I really like how they sing in these songs. It made me want to learn Peking Opera,” Zhang said. It was hard at first, but he practiced every day and never gave up.
In 2021, Zhang went to a university in Wuhan. The hot and dry weather there made his voice sound tired and he had difficulty singing. So he started to learn a special Peking Opera skill called qiaogong. The skill requires actors to wear high-heeled shoes and balance on their toes (踮着脚). Sometimes, they have to jump on chairs or move around! “At first, just standing on the ground was difficult,” Zhang said. “I fell many times, but I drilled day by day. Finally, it became easier.”
It was this skill that gave Zhang the idea to turn Hulu Xiao Jin Gang into a Peking Opera show. He thought Qiaogong would be perfect for showing the movements of the snake character from the cartoon.
Zhang and his team worked very hard for the show. “I hope this work will help young people see, understand, and fall in love with Peking Opera,” he said.

Mother’s Day is a special time to thank mothers for their love and care. In Australia, people often give chrysanthemums (菊花) as a gift. They are more common than chocolate or cards. These bright flowers have become a symbol of the day.

It made me want to learn Peking Opera,” Zhang said. It was hard at first, but he practiced every day and never gave up.
In 2021, Zhang went to a university in Wuhan. The hot and dry weather there made his voice sound tired and he had difficulty singing.
