When 1 look back on my 1990s childhood,it's hard not to foel nostalgic )
Wenode our bikes, built dons and swam in streams.Thoagh the Internct cisted,my
parente would boot me off to uBe the landline.Media was tagible tapes and CDs-
and often conBumed as a family.I still recall the excitement of visiting the vidoo shop
to sclcct a film.
Ive noticed a huge upswing of interest in"90s parenting"and, this year, the trend
seums to have exploded.Former 90s kids are in the thick of it,trying to work out how
to parent their own children. There's a fecling that huge advances in technology have
repulted in similar losses. But what are the losses? And was parenting really better
back theu?
"Yes,"Bays Justin Flom,a father of two and content creator, who built a replica
Blockbuster video store for his danghters in his bouse."The wholc family would pilo
into the car, head to the video store and walk the rows while deciding what to watch,"
he says of his own chldhood."It felt exciting, full of possibility.Scrolling online just
ian'Lthe8aome.”
Justin's Blockbuster room is a way of making screen time intentionnl, and that
seerns to be at the heart of this idea of 90s parenting."In the 90s,the critique was that
TV would rot (your brain, but it was stationary,"he says."I lived in your living
room.Now,media follows us everywhere.It's in our pockets,on demand,nonstop.
With increasing fears about the cffects of scrcen time, and parent-led campaigns
such as Smariphone Free Chlldhood gaining popularity,it's no surprise so many of us
are looking back to the time just before they exploded. Some parents and schools are
even giving their children landlines.Scrolling through 90s parenting-themed videos,
I'm saruck by one video:a group of adults and kids engaging in a back garden water
fight (organised via landline),having put all their smartphoncs in a bowl out of reacb.

It's not just about screens.It's aboul connection,famlly time and;actually,time
more gencrally."Parenting in the 90s was basicnlly just'slow'parenting,"says Jes,a
former primary school teacher and a big believer in the importance of play. That means
mot driving kids from activity to activity so days are jam-packed.Boredom is important,
says Mclanie Murphy,a mothcr of two from Dublin."Long periods of unremarkable
time were a gift I didn't kmow I'd miss,and I want that for my kids.I don't want to
schedule every hour of their lives."
T'll admit that when I first encountered the concept of 90s parenting,I thought it
was a bit overly emotional. But if that is the case then why, writing this,do I feel so...
sad?
I can't quite seem to shake this feeling of loss, and of wanting to return to a
simpler time.Maybe I just need more fun in my life.Time for a water fight,I think.
Who's in?

Think of your favorite piece of art-a painting,a song,or a noveland try to
remember why it made such a strong impression on you.Now imagine artificial
intelligencecreated it.
The question might seem silly, yet this is the future toward which we are racing
Over the past few years,AI developers have improved the technology's ability to
create art across nearly cvery field. With AI so rapidly leaming to produce art forms
previously considered only the domain (of human creativity,it's important to
understand how people view this transformation.
Earlier this year we conducted a survey on AI art.The results were striking. Most
people held that human art has an emotional depth which machines either can't or
shouldn't reproduce.Yet they were open to AI-generated art so long as there was an
artist involved.
We first asked people to name their favorite work of art. Then we asked how they
would feel upon learning that their favorite work of art was generated by Al.Responses
ranged from shock and anger to enthusiasm:more than 62%said they would like it
less,32%said their feelings wouldn't change, and nearly 5%said they would like it
more,
The reactions, however, went deeper. When asked if there is a difference between
the emotional value of human and AIart,81%said yes, reminding us that we seek the
human experience in art.We want to know if an artist drew from personal experience
or imagination. We stop while reading a book to leam about its author, and we follow
the lives of singers and actors.Art,after all,is a way humanscommunicate.
But if great art is forged from human hope, desire, disappointment and soow,
what does creativity mean in a world with increasingly powerful AI?Are people who
use AI artists?We asked this.Thirteen percent said yes,another 13%were unsure,and
31%said no,whereas 42%selected "yes, but only if they aro providing significant
guidance to the Al;otherwise,no."These responses cast light on why so many people
complain about AI-generated "slop".What participants are often pointing out is the

第8页(16页)
impcrsonnl, almost meaninglcss nature of AI.But mauy of the respondents appearcd
more open to the iden of people using Al as a tool to help bring their artistic vision into
the world.
As AI conquers more artistic domains, what people find acceptable may shift. But
we do know that pcople still value art as a means of communication and connection.
Taking the pulse of what society thinks about AI art can help connect AI developers
not only with artists but with the millions of people who find meaning and connection
in art.
27.From the resuits of the survey on AI art,we can learn that.
A.humamity will always outperform AI in terms of creativity
B.human involvement is the key factor shaping opinions ou AI art
C.acceptance ofAI art has gradually changed during its development
D.AI conection has a universally negative impact on art appreciation
28.Which of the following best reflects the main point in Paragraph 5?
A.Art at its heart is human experience communicated.
B.An artist's job is to translate personal experience into art.
C.Leaming artists'stories is the key to appreciating their art.
D.AI bridges communication between experience and imagination.
29.The word"forged"underiined in Paragraph 6 most probably means
A.relcased
B.separated
C,created
D.borrowed
30.What can we infer from this passage?
A.AI-generated art is not accessible to everyone.
BPeople are using AI to redefinc creativity in art.
C.Al can serve as a path for human communication.
D.People want AI to help artists but not be the artist.

relief when you recognize that one of your lucky choices ended up much better off
than you might have been,if things had gone a different way?
31It is the birthplace of emotions such as regret, gratitude, and guilt.
Picturing an altemative outcome to what has actually happened in one's lifc holds an
iresistible appeal, even when it leads to unhappiness. It is therefore not surprising that
it has become a hot topic of research in social psychology.
Counterfactual thinking often plays out in real-time on national television after a
natural disaster.32 The victims are usually shaken and highly emotional,
and they have often lost everything that they owned. And yet,we commonly hear them
use words such as"lucky"or"gratoful"to describe their feelings.
33 the person had really been lucky, wouldn't they still have a house
and have been spared from all of the grief they musi now endure? Some psychologists
have argued that one of the benefits of counterfactual thinking is that it can be an
effective tool for making us more resilient.34 Thal paves the way for
positive emotions that might help them through a very dark time in their lives.

psychologists believe that it exists to helps us crystallizo the goals that are most
important to us and to improve our ability to wisely choose future courses of action.
A.At first glance, this response does not make much sense.
B.This type of mental "what-ifisr"is called counterfactual thinking.
