(Skimming)
例如阅读记叙文《My First Part-time Job》时,通过略读首段“Last summer, I took my first part-time job in a café, which changed my view of growing up.”和末段“This experience taught me independence and responsibility, making me grow up quickly.”,可快速把握文本主旨:作者的第一份兼职工作及其带来的成长。
(Scanning)
例如题干询问“作者通过什么事情学会了独立”,可带着“independent”“learn”等关键词查读文本,快速找到对应句子“She learned to be independent by taking care of herself when her parents were away.”,精准提取答案。
(Inferring)
例如文本描述“Tom used to argue with his mom about his homework, but now he talks with her calmly and explains his ideas.”,结合主题可推断:Tom学会了理性沟通,心理上变得更加成熟,这是成长的体现。
(Word Guessing)
例如:文本中出现“She showed great perseverance when she practiced playing the piano—she never gave up even when she felt tired.”,结合破折号后的解释“never gave up”及“growing up”主题中“坚持、努力”的相关内涵,可猜测“perseverance”意为“毅力、坚持”。
(Logical Combing)

Last summer, my son, Eric, left for university in another country. Our once lively house became quiet and lonely. I missed and worried about him so much that I started sending him messages on the phone, mainly to say hello or to give him a word of warning.
One of my messages said, “So you told me you lost your wallet. If you are always careless, one day you’ll wake up and find yourself lost.”
I did get Eric’s messages, but most of them were about money. I was a bit angry. They were not different from the notes he used to leave on the whiteboard when he was at home.
“I bought a new pair of shoes. They cost me $90. Please help!”
“Money is running short because I’ve bought some books for my research paper. Help me, please!”
Recently, however, Eric begins to send me all kinds of articles. Some are funny, some are touching and some make me think. He knows I haven’t got many things to do in my free time. He says they will help me understand young men better and keep up with the times. I read the articles slowly, like a careful student, with mixed feelings as well—my kid, who followed me around not long ago, has now become my teacher!
So I write back, “I’ve read all those articles. I’ll take them as a loving son’s hopes towards his mother. He must be thinking that his mother is still young enough to accept new things. That makes me feel proud. We parents can’t learn quickly and change in both body and mind. Thank you, my son.”

①There is a famous expression in English “Stop the world, I want to get off!” This expression is actually about a feeling of stress, which makes a person want to stop whatever they are doing. Why not try to relax? “Stress” means pressure. It is one of the most common causes of health problems in modern life. Too much stress results in physical, emotional, and mental health problems.
②There are plenty of physical effects of stress. Stress can affect the heart. It can make the heart beat faster or miss beats, and can also cause high blood pressure. Stress can cause a person to breathe too fast and can also result in stomach hurts and digesting (消化) problems. These are a few examples of illnesses resulting from stress.
③Emotions are also easily affected by stress. People who have too much stress often feel worried and tired. When people are under stress, they often overreact (反应过度) to little problems. For example, a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may shout at a child for dropping a glass of juice. Stress can make people angry or nervous easily.
④Long-term stress can lead to different kinds of serious mental illnesses. Depression (抑郁), a terrible feeling of sadness and hopelessness, can be the result of continued and increasing stress. Being unable to sleep well are sometimes caused by stress and are often made worse by stress. If stress continues, then one’s mental health is at risk.

Life is full of partings (分别). Maybe that’s why this theme has been written about by poets around the world. It’s sad to say goodbye to our friends and family members. Instead of simply centering on sadness, many poets see farewells from a positive perspective (角度). Let’s see an example.
A Farewell Song
Wang Wei
No dust is raised on the road wet with morning rain;
The willow by the hotel looks so fresh and green.
I invite you to drink a cup of wine again;
West of the sunny pass no more friends will be seen.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
A Farewell Song is a famous poem of parting. It first describes a fresh and bright scene after the rain, making readers feel hopeful. The willow (柳) branches are a typical symbol of parting in China. The Chinese character for “willow” has the same pronunciation (发音) as the character for “stay”. Therefore, presenting (赠送) a willow branch when seeing someone off expresses the emotions (情感) of asking someone to stay. In ancient times, Chinese people often used them as a parting gift between friends and family. Still parting is painful (痛苦的). The poet toasted (为……举杯饮酒) to say goodbye to his friend, showing his sincere love and care for his friend.

Today, something happened that made Ryan really angry. During a group discussion, Michael not only stopped his speech on purpose but also called his idea stupid in front of their classmates. Ryan tried to explain himself, but then Michael encouraged the other classmates to laugh at him.

Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why? Some people think kindness is something out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular. But research shows that being kind can activate (激活) an area of the brain called Striatum. Research also shows that kindness improves people’s mood (情绪). But why and how does it happen? Here are a number of different ways.
Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile in a situation, people around may be smiling, too. This is especially true for your close friends and family. A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. It can also make us feel good. So why not set off that chain (链条) of good feelings to people around?
Secondly, being kind starts or develops a social connection with others. Kind acts like buying someone a present make friendships stronger. Research has shown that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself. Similarly, charities (慈善) also open up new circles of people to connect with someone on the other side of the world.
In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. It also lifts everyone’s spirits. For example, you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you’re getting cakes a lot more days than providing them.
All in all, being kind may improve your mood, but research has also shown that if you’re in a good mood, you can act much more kindly. This makes it a wonderful two-way relationship, doesn’t it?

Being angry is very normal in our life. However, anger is not a good feeling at all. It can make us feel uncomfortable and get in bad moods. And most people choose to hide their anger. A research shows that this can seriously affect our health.
Is it helpful for us to shout or break things when we get angry? The research tells that when we deal with our anger like this, it would be hard for us to get on well with the people around us. The more time we keep angry, the worse result we’ll get. We should deal with our anger in a proper way. Here are some tips.

① Sometimes a little self-criticism (自我批评) is not a bad thing. We can learn much from our mistakes. However, too much of it may result in health problems. When self-criticism becomes too much, it can turn into negative self-talk—that little voice in your head saying you’re not good enough.
② Dr Hugh, a scientist, said that some good students who study hard usually do not do well in a test because of negative self-talk.
③ Lindsay was one of Hugh’s best students. She came to class early, took part in discussion and did all her homework. However, she did poorly in exams. When Hugh asked her how she felt before a test, she told him she was very nervous. She was not sure if she knew the right answers. This is an example of negative self-talk. Dr Hugh turned Lindsay’s negative self-talk into positive questions. During a test, he told Lindsay to say to herself, “Why do I remember everything I study for an exam? ________?” Lindsay took his advice. Two weeks later, she took an exam in another class and scored 15 points higher than she had on an earlier exam. Four weeks later, she earned an “A” on the final exam in Hugh’s class.

What do you do in your free time? As for me and my family, we love skiing. Last year, Mum and I tried a cross-country skiing across the countryside. That was so wonderful.
We chose a place in Sweden (瑞典), because we saw some beautiful pictures with people skiing through forests on white snow. So we joined a group of people of all ages with a guide. We had read about the place we went to before we left. It is close to where Sweden ends and Norway (挪威) starts. And our family knew we couldn’t text home, as there was no Internet connection. Actually, it was relaxing to be far from anywhere, or anyone. What we hadn’t realized was that from there, we’d be able to see amazing coloured lights in the sky, which appeared at certain times of the year, called the Northern Lights (北极光)!
On our first day in Sweden, waking up early in the dark was hard, but it was worth it to see the sunrise over the forests. So, I was glad I did. But the real problem was my 15kg bag, full of food and clothes. I had no idea that it would weigh that much. Anyway, we spent hours skiing across the snow. Although we were tired, we felt excited.
Finally, we stopped for the night. It wasn’t until we’d reached our small wooden house that our guide mentioned we’d just crossed a frozen (冰冻) lake to get there, but nothing surprised us by that point! Once inside, we all helped out with the preparations for the meal. Some cut firewood (木柴) while others cooked. Soon, it was time for dinner. It was made from the food we’d brought. However, it tasted delicious. Outside, everything was quiet and calm. After dinner, we all felt very tired and soon fell asleep, happy and ready for the next day.

The turning point of my life was my decision to give up a promising business career and study music.
My parents, although sympathetic and sharing my love of music, disapproved of it as a profession. This was understandable in view of the family background. My grandfather had taught music for nearly forty years. Though much beloved and respected in the community, he earned barely enough to provide for his large family. As a consequence of this example in the family, the very mention of music as a profession carried with it a picture of a risky existence with uncertain financial rewards. My parents insisted on college instead of a music school, and to college I went-quite happily, as I remember, for although I loved my violin and spent most of my spare time practicing, I had many other interests.
Before my graduation from college, the family met with severe financial reverses and I felt it my duty to leave college and take a job. Thus was I launched upon a business career, which I always think of as the wasted years. Now I do not for a moment mean to disparage (贬低) business. My whole point is that it was not for me. I went into it for money, and aside from the satisfaction of being able to help the family, money is all I got out of it. It was not enough. I felt that life was passing me by.
I continued to make money, and finally, bit by bit, accumulated enough to enable me to go abroad to study music. I resigned from my position and, feeling like a man released from jail, sailed for Europe. I stayed four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working before and enjoyed every minute of it. “Enjoyed” is too mild a word. I walked on air. I really lived. I was a free man and I was doing what I loved to do and what I was meant to do.
If I had stayed in business, I might be a comparatively wealthy man today, but I do not believe I would have made a success of living. I would have given up all those inner satisfactions that money can never buy.
48.The writer’s parents didn’t want him to take a music career mainly because ________.
A.the writer didn’t show much talent in playing music
B.college was a much better option than a music school
C.it seemed an unstable and financially-challenged profession
D.the living conditions of the writer’s parents weren’t good enough
49.What can be learned about the writer’s experience of college?
A.The writer enjoyed the fruitful college life.
B.The writer dropped out before graduation.
C.The writer kept playing the violin every day.
D.The writer went to college unwillingly.
50.What was the most important thing the writer achieved from his business career?
A.A sense of belonging.
B.A considerable fortune.
C.The satisfaction of helping his family.
D.The pride of being a wealthy man.
51.What does the underlined sentence “I walked on air” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.I was interviewed by a broadcaster. B.My music was alive on broadcast.
C.I felt very relaxed indeed. D.I was extremely excited.
52.What message does the passage mainly convey?
A.Being able to do what one loves is the best kind of life.
B.A success of living depends on one’s adaptation to life.
C.One should think twice before he/she makes a decision.
D.Ups and downs make one even stronger.

1. As I grow up, I have learned to deal with my own things independently.
【解析】“随着我长大”用As引导时间状语从句,主语I为第一人称,grow up用原形;“学会做某事”用learn to do sth.,结合语境用现在完成时have learned;“独立地”为independently,修饰动词短语deal with。
2. We should try our best to develop our own responsibility, which is the key to growing up.
【解析】“努力做某事”用try one’s best to do sth.;“培养责任感”为develop responsibility;“成长的关键”用the key to growing up,to为介词,后接动名词形式。
3. She successfully overcame the difficulties in her studies and made great progress.
【解析】“成功克服”用successfully overcome,结合语境用一般过去时overcame;“学习上的困难”为the difficulties in her studies;“取得很大进步”为make great progress,progress为不可数名词,用原形。

Wang Wei
No dust is raised on the road wet with morning rain;
The willow by the hotel looks so fresh and green.
I invite you to drink a cup of wine again;
13.The scene described by Wang Wei in the first line of the poem is __________.
A.fresh and bright B.sad and upset
C.full and positive D.sunny and typical
14.Why did the poet mention “the willow by the hotel” in the poem?

C.Because he wanted to send it to his family. D.Because he wanted to show his parting feeling.
15.Which word in the passage can best explain the word “farewell”?
A.Parting. B.Caring. C.Toasting. D.Centering.
16.What does the passage mainly want to show us?
A.A Farewell Song is a famous poem. B.Life is full of reunions (重聚) and partings.
C.Wang Wei is a famous poet. D.Saying goodbye is not just to be sad.

Today, something happened that made Ryan really angry. During a group discussion, Michael not only stopped his speech on purpose but also called his idea stupid in front of their classmates. Ryan tried to explain himself, but then Michael encouraged the other classmates to laugh at him.
Later, Ryan went to his best friend, Jerry, and angrily told him what had happened. After listening, Jerry suggested that Ryan write a letter to Michael.
“You can really give him a piece of your mind,” Jerry said. Ryan quickly wrote a strongly worded letter and then showed it to Jerry.
“Right, right,” Jerry said loudly. “This is exactly what I want. Give him a good scolding (责骂). You wrote it really well, Ryan.”
But when Ryan was about to put the letter into an envelope, Jerry stopped him and asked, “What are you going to do with it?”
“Send it,” Ryan replied, confused.
“Don’t be silly,” Jerry said. “You can’t send this letter. Throw it onto the stove (炉子). That’s what I do with letters I write when I’m angry. This letter is well-written. Writing it helped you let out your anger, right? Now you feel better, don’t you? So burn it and leave the anger behind.”

First, be clear about what made us angry. Anger can be caused by lots of feelings such as fear, disappointment and so on. Second, pay more attention to those everyday things that may make us angry. A great way to deal with anger is to talk about it. The study shows that if we talk about our feelings, we can calm ourselves down and feel better.
④ Dr Hugh saw students work out fine with his method. And he did not just help his students. He also advised his friends and neighbours to let go of negative self-talk in their lives. He once said, “We can programme ourselves for success in class or in life, or we can programme ourselves for failure.”
⑤ Dr Hugh’s story shows us too much self-criticism harms performance, while positive self-talk turns things around. Positive self-talk has great power. Success starts in our minds.
