W:Do you want to eat out tonight or would you rather eat at home?
M:We've eaten out a lot this week.I'm perfectly happy to stay home for a change-as long as I don't have to
cook.
Text 2
W:How are you going to get home?
M:Oh,I can just take a bus or a taxi. There are usually plenty of taxis around that area.
W:Yes,but not on a Sunday night. Why don't you ask Kevin to drive you home? He's coming along with us.
Text 3
M:How are you and your roommate getting along?
W:Pretty well. She usually comes home late, but she's always careful not to make any noise in case I'm
sleeping.I like that. She's a real change from my old roommate who only ever cared about herself.
Text 4
W:These should control your backache. You should detect improvement within two days.
M:But my wife used a different medication for her back pain.
W:There are different factors that determine how a medication will work.I can't just give the same
medication to everyone.
Text 5
W:I'm taking the job at Glendale Books. It'll be good experience to work for a publishing company.

W:There's an excellent health plan. The company pays ninety percent of employees'health insurance. And it
gives everyone free health club membership.
M:That's amazing!Congratulations!
Text 6
M:Have you thought about applying for a scholarship?
W:Do they have any?I mean,my dad is always complaining about how much money it costs him.
M:In your department, there are actually three full scholarships available. But there are only two in my
department. They cover school fees and provide $1,500 cash.
W:$1,500 cash?!Party!
M:Please,Miss. The money is intended more as a textbook allowance, not party money. If you promise to
behave,I'll show you how to apply.
W:Great,and thanks!
Text 7

W:Hi,I need to move to Watertown at the beginning of next month. My company will be moving here, and
they suggested we use your real estate agency.I'd like to rent a two-bedroom apartment.
M:Sure.here are some of the apartments that are available.
W:OK.Oh,and I see you have a three-bedroom apartment available?
M:Yes,that one's far from the city center, but it's spacious and quite nice.
W:Hmm...Well,I don't really want to spend more than 650 dollars per month.
M:OK.Here's a two-bedroom apartment for 600 dollars-well within your price range.
W:I'd like to look at it.Could we visit it sometime this week?
M:I'll check my calendar.
Text 9
W:I'd like to welcome Barry Green, the successful concert violinist,to our studio today.
M:Hello.It's good to be here.
W:Barry, why did you decide to be a violinist?
M:It was something I'd been desperate to do since I was about six years old.My parents weren't musicians.
but they let my brother and I do whatever we liked as hobbies,as long as it didn't get in the way of our
education.My brother's a good footballer,but sport's never really been my thing.I watched a concert on
TV,and after that I was hooked.
W:So what did you do when you left school?
M:I thought about studying maths or physics, but then I heard about a youth band that was doing a world
tour.They offered me a scholarship so I could afford to go,which was brilliant.When I got back,as I
already knew what I wanted to do,it seemed pointless to delay going to music college,so that's where I
went.I'm very lucky to be able to do what I love, and to have achieved what I set out to do as a young
child. Not many people get the chance to do that.
Text 10
W:Hi.My name's Jess.I work at an activity center for young people,as an activity leader. The center is in
North Cornwall in the south-west of England. The center is open all year round, but I only work here
during the summer, and summer is the busiest time,so they need extra activity leaders then.Activity
centers are a great idea for young people. Most of the people who come to the center live in towns and
cities,so it's a chance to enjoy some fresh air.Our center is near the sea,so we spend most time on water
activities like surfing and sailing. We also do rock climbing and mountain biking on the mountain slopes.I
think that the most important thing about the activity centers is the social side.Young people today spend
so much time on computers or watching TV that they don't talk to each other much.In most of our
activities they have to work in teams,so it's a good opportunity for them to learn about working and
communicating with other people, and to make new friends, too. In the evenings,we get together to sing
songs and play indoor games. On the last afternoon,we always have team games.Every group wants to
be first,so they really try hard, and it's a lot of fun.I've been an activity leader for three years now,but
this will be my last time.I'm finishing university next year and getting a full-time job. It's sad to think
that this is my last year here, but I've really enjoyed it.

while Wang discussed possible threats posed by AI,like data privacy and personal safety. Both agreed AI was
meant to benefit humans, not to replace them.
The forum deepened my understanding of the power of AI.I realize the future belongs to those who use
AI wisely.

After school,Ms.S asked me to go into her office.Though I was hesitant,I dragged myself to her office
and Ms.S waved at me with a welcoming smile. As it turned out,not only was I allowed to make up for my
poor performance, but Ms.S was the first person other than my parents to accept my shyness. She shared
her own shyness story, and this really surprised me.Ms.S suggested I should go beyond my comfort zone by
doing new activities.
I took her word for it and something shifted for me.At first,I simply worked at feeling comfortable
speaking in English and making new friends. Then when I was a bit more adapted to the school,I started
talking to teachers. After that,I also started getting more involved in clubs and activities.Currently,I'm
working at talking with more people and just being more open in general.I even voluntarily participated in a
Science Fair, became vice-president of two clubs, and joined the public speaking club.2026届天祝藏族自治县第一中学高三寒假练习试卷(六)

Missing Pieces Project:Add Your Pieces to the Big Picture
All over England are places with stories to tell:from buildings to battlefields, some on your
doorstep, others just a day trip away.Their stories are still being written, and they won't be
complete until you share your side.
The Missing Pieces Project invites you to share your pictures and stories of the unique,
significant and memorable places on the National Heritage List for England. The List is a
register of all nationally protected historic buildings and sites across England.Your view of a
place is as unique as you are,so every snapshot and story you add is an important piece of the
picture. And the more pieces of the picture we have, the better we can work together to protect
what makes these places special.Whether you have a connection to a place already or you're
discovering it for the first time, your views add important new pieces to the picture.
Images:from phone snaps to scans of old photos and architects'drawings, from wide angles
to close-ups
Stories:from memories of holidays, school trips and family events to information about
grand openings and transformations
Photos must be ones you took yourself, from public land or rights of way,or with
permission from the landowner. To add an historic image, you must have the rights to it.See the
Missing Pieces Project terms and conditions for more information.

In medical school and throughout his career as a neonatologist,William Cashore often was
asked to read and correct others'work.Little did they know he was a spelling champion, with a
trophy()at home to prove it.Cashore won the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 1954 at age
14.Now 84,he's the oldest living champion of the contest, which dates back to 1925.As
contestants from this year's competition headed home,he reflected on his experience and the
effect it had on him.
Cashore credits his parents for helping him prepare for his trip to Washington,D.C.,for
the spelling bee.His mother was an elementary school teacher and his father was a lab technician
with a talent for taking words apart and putting them back together.
When the field narrowed to two competitors, the other boy misspelled "uncinate",which
means bent like a hook.Cashore spelled it correctly, then clinched the title with the word
"transept",an architectural term for the transverse part of a cross-shaped church.
Cashore, who was given $500 and an encyclopedia set, enjoyed a brief turn as a celebrity.
He didn't brag about his accomplishment after returning to Pennsylvania, but the experience
quietly shaped him in multiple ways."It gave me much more self-confidence and also gave me a
sense that it's very important to try to get things as correct as possible,"he said."I've always
been that way,and I still feel that way.If people are careless about spelling and writing, you
wonder if they're careless about their thinking.
Preparing for a spelling bee today requires more concentration and technique than it did
decades ago,Cashore said."The vocabulary of the words is far,far more technical,he said.
"The English language,in the meantime, has imported a great many words from foreign
languages which were not part of the English language when I was in eighth grade,"he said.
24.What can we learn about Cashore from the first two paragraphs?
A.He is the best ever spelling champion
B.He prepared alone for the spelling bee.
C.He used his spelling ability to help others.
D.He preferred to show off his spelling talent.
25.What does the word"clinched"underlined in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Won.
B.Declined.
C.Removed.
D.Gave.
26.How did the spelling bee competition affect Cashore?
A.It helped him start his career.
B.It strengthened his confidence.
C.It limited his way of thinking.
D.It brought him lasting popularity.
27.What should we do to prepare for today's spelling bee according to Cashore?
A.Learn multiple languages.
B.Go abroad for language study.
C.Be a remarkable technician.
D.Try to improve relevant skills.

There are functioning steam railways in other countries:tourists in France can go for a ride
in Brittany;so can visitors travelling to the Dandenong Ranges in Australia. But no other
country has a heritage railway sector anywhere near as energetic as the UK's,where more than
170 services cross around 600 miles of track and call at 460 stations.
Just a few years after the first of these railways opened at Talyllyn in north Wales,in 1951,
a fictional Welsh steam engine became the main character in the children's television serial Ivor
the Engine. On lines originally built for slate quarries((石板采石场),north Wales still has the
biggest group of steam railways. But they exist in all four nations of the UK,typically operating
seasonal timetables in tourist areas. These railways are living museums with stations decorated in
period style. Some staff wear costumes too.
Up to 95%of the 18.5m journeys on heritage railways each year are taken by domestic
tourists. They owe their popularity to a combination of nostalgia(),enjoyment of the
countryside and enthusiasm for the old engines.
Railways are expensive to run,and the first steam preservation enthusiasts recognised that
they would need volunteers to make their dream of a revival come true. This reliance on
volunteers is partly due to cuts in budgets from local authorities and other funders. But heritage
railways are a good example of what can be achieved by a combined paid and voluntary
workforce. As well as the economic contribution that the railways make to rural areas, there is
evidence that volunteering can have beneficial effects on people as well.
The railways will need to respond, like the rest of society,to environmental policies. The
destructive impact of greenhouse gases is an obvious challenge to a sector that trades on an image
of coal-powered transport.Electric railway engines are being used for maintenance,to bring
emissions down, and some railways are active in wildlife conservation. There will need to be
further adaptation down the line. That the railways don't stand still has always been part of their
appeal especially on rainy days in the summer holidays.
28.How are the UK's steam railways different from other countries'?
A.They are active across the countries.
B.They serve as tourist attractions.
C.They are mainly powered by steam.
D.They use small amounts of energy.
29.Why does the author mention Jvor the Engine?
A.To spread knowledge of the classic serial.
B.To introduce the origin of steam engines.
C.To show the popularity of steam railways.
D.To share a childhood memory of travelling.
30.What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A.Volunteers help to keep heritage railways alive.
B.Economic growth depends on individual efforts.
C.People can't afford to travel by heritage railways.
D.Local officials don't use old means of transport.
31.What is the author's attitude towards heritage railways?
A.Indifferent.
B.Doubtful.
C.Appreciative.
D.Negative.

A new study has revealed that a prehistoric sea cow was the target of two different
predators(捕食者)一an ancient crocodile and a tiger shark, providing rare insights into the
complex food chains from millions of years ago.The research, conducted by an international
team of scientists and published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, uncovers one of the
few known instances where a single prey()was attacked by many predators.
The sea cow, belonging to the extinct group Culebratherium, was first attacked by a
crocodile.Evidence then shows that after the initial attack, the sea cow's remains were searched
by a tiger shark,a tooth of which was found near the unlucky animal's neck.
"Have you seen the movie Batman? There is a scene where he and Alfred are shooting
bullets to try and figure out which specific type of bullet they are trying to find,"said Benites-
Palomino, lead author of the research."Our research was conducted in exactly the same way.We
have these experiments in the wild where predators are attacking their prey, and then afterwards
we try to compare which is the best scene for what we're finding there.
The find is particularly significant as it adds to the limited fossil record of multiple predators
interacting with a single prey.Such interactions are common in today's ecosystems, but are
rarely documented in the fossil record, making this discovery an important piece of the puzzle in
understanding ancient food webs.
"We have been unsure as to which animals would have served this purpose as a food source
for multiple predators. Our previous research has identified sperm whales searched by several
shark species, and this new research highlights the importance of sea cows within the food
chain,"Benites-Palomino said in a statement.
The digging, directed by Marcelo Sanchez-Villagra,head of the Palaeontological Institute
and Museum in Zurich,Switzerland, was both challenging and rewarding. The site was initially
discovered by a local farmer who spotted unusual rocks, inspiring the team to investigate further

Is there a link between social media and depression?Do social media have a negative impact
on your mental health?It's complicated.
In a recent study, the investigators compared social media use and depression between
teens.
36 Specifically, for every hour per day that one teen spent on social media more than
the peers,he or she likely had a 0.64 point higher depression score.
A different study published in 2018 identified five distinct types of social media users. The
study found that "problematic social media use"was one of the main themes for people whose
mental health was affected by social media. You can have alcohol in your life without it being a
problem,or your alcohol use may become problematic.37
There's one important thing to remember about survey research-just because two things
happen together,it's not necessarily true that one causes the other:38 For all we know,it
could be that people who are already more depressed choose to spend more time on social media.
39 If you think that we shouldn't paint social media with one broad brush, you're on
the right track. On the one hand, participants often described social media as a valuable way to
cope with stress. On the other hand, cyberbullying via social media was also a common
experience for participants. Some also said that constantly checking their own social media profile
was stressful.
It's certainly possible that experiences like cyberbullying, comparing yourself to idealized
images, and constantly monitoring your profile, are bad for your mood. It's also true for many
that social media offer community support and positive messages.Given the inconclusive
research,it's safe to say that at least we shouldn't write off social media altogether.40
Anyway, you cannot use it as a crutch()for coping with other stressors and mental health
problems.
A.It's the same with social media.
B.Social media can be a double-edged sword.
C.People get more opinionated(固执己见的)about the potential problems of social media,
D.They found that those who used social media more had higher depression scores.
E.They reviewed all existing research and found that there were both benefits and drawbacks.
F.The key to benefiting from social media may lie in using it in moderation and staying socially
connected.
G.For example, just because higher social media use co-occurs with higher levels of depression,
it doesn't mean social media use causes depression.

AI and Future Life
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Growing up,I was always shy and unconfident in myself.Aside from my parents,I felt
others found my shyness difficult to accept. It used to be something that affected my life in the
most negative way possible. It made me unable to talk in any setting in which I felt
uncomfortable. This means that I wasn't even able to speak in class, chat with my friends, order
my own food,etc.
At the 5th grade,my parents moved to a neighbouring city because of the job relocation and
I changed schools.I found myself in a new classroom with a new teacher, whom we called Ms.
S,surrounded by 30 new faces. This was fairly terrifying. And so when I was asked to stand up
and introduce myself,I was trembling.
Still then,I was labelled as "shy and quiet".I didn't have a lot of friends, only spoke in
class if I really had to,kept everything to myself, avoided public.events, and panicked badly at
the thought of oral presentations in class.
This haunted()me until one day,Ms.S announced in class that each of us was going
to be singing a solo in front of the class.I'd had no idea that this was going to happen. When it
was my turn, she called me up to the front, instructed the piano player to begin and I very
unwillingly sang"Cuckoo,cuckoo,pray what do you do..."in a barely audible,high-pitched
voice, with the rest of silent children staring up at me.Ms.S stood next to the piano, saying:
"Louder!Louder!"But I didn't know how to project my voice;I couldn't make it any louder.
I was really upset at it.I cried for a few hours.I suspected my childhood shyness was
largely unsupported in the new school. This even made me not want to go to school.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After school,Ms.S asked me to go into her office.
I took her word for it and something shifted for me.
