The Library for the Performing Arts invites you to an afternoon discussion next Thursday. In the discussion, the hope is neither to promote nor to denigrate (贬低) AI — instead, lectures will allow listeners to have an open discussion about the potential impacts of AI on theatre at a crucial stage in its technological advancement. Seating Policy Programs are free and open to all, but registration is requested a week earlier. Registered guests are given priority and allowed to check in 15 to 30 minutes before the start time and holding seats for anyone is prohibited. We welcome you to the library regardless of registration status and you can wait in our standby line. Five minutes before the program starts, all remaining seats are released to attendees in the standby line. While this is not guaranteed, we will do our best to get you into any of our programs. B On a low hill near the coast of Maine, colorful flowers glow in the May sunlight, while new plants emerge from the soil. This is Dandy Ram Farm, run by Bo Dennis, who grows flowers for weddings and other special events. “When people come to us, we say, ‘This is what we’re good at: local, sustainably grown flowers,’” Dennis says. “Sometimes clients ask for out-of-season flowers. I say, ‘Great! Have a good celebration. I don’t think we’re the right fit for you.’” What Dennis grows won’t be found in supermarkets or big-box stores. The flowers that fill those shelves are imports, and they are part of an enormously successful international market that sells blooms thousands of miles from their fields of origin and earns more than $25 billion every year. But pesticides and other agrochemicals required to sustain that scale of production can injure workers and their families. Studies in Ecuador, the world’s third-largest flower exporter, link flower farm chemicals to children’s attention problems and birth abnormalities. And the risks extend to people around the world. In Belgium, florists (花商) with imported flowers had unhealthy levels of pesticide chemicals on their gloves, levels high enough to burn the skin if it wasn’t protected. In response, small U.S. operations such as Dennis’s Dandy Ram Farm are building a new agricultural model — a “slow flower movement,” which offers a cleaner, greener alternative to modern floral production. Flowers are so present in our lives that we almost do not see them: wrapped in paper in every market, placed in a vase on a table in any cafe. But while they are quotidian, they memorialize the most important days of our lives. We invest them with so much meaning that we demand they always be perfect. But those perfect plants don’t grow that way without assistance. They are routinely treated with chemicals to ensure they meet our expectations. Dennis and other growers aim to protect ecosystems while bringing a bit of beauty — wild, imperfect, unpredictable — back into the world. 24. Why does Bo Dennis turn down some clients’ requests? A. He sticks to eco-friendly farming. B. He wants to provide perfect flowers. C. He fails to compete with large stores. D. He sells flowers for specific occasions. 25. What concern does paragraph 3 raise about the global flower industry? A. Its economic costs. B. Its health impacts. C. Its growth prospects. D. Its technological challenges. 26. What does the underlined word “quotidian” in paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Harmful. B. Perfect. C. Common. D. Meaningful. 27. Which saying best reflects Dennis’s philosophy on flower growing? A. Let things be as they are. B. All good things take time. C. Perfection is the enemy of good. D. Growth requires careful planning. C A dropped bag of chips disturbed a cave ecosystem in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. This cave is almost cut off from the outside world, so introducing anything foreign can be harmful. “Things in the damp cave get wet quickly,” says park guide Ashley. The snack attracts tiny organisms, causing unwanted growth. Soon, small animals like crickets and spiders came to eat, spreading the pollution. Rangers found the bag within hours. “But that can be all it takes,” says Ashley. “I’m sure some crickets got a bit of the snack.” Over 500 million people visit American public lands each year, creating many chances to harm wild places. “When you look at the numbers, it’s incredible,” says Watts, head of the Leave No Trace Center in Colorado, an organization aimed at minimizing human impact on nature. Food waste takes a long time to break down, especially in certain areas. “It takes much longer for an apple core to rot in a desert than in a forest,” says Blye, a teacher at the University of Utah. Leaving waste introduces animals to an unnatural diet and changes their behavior with sometimes disastrous results. Bears who taste garbage and become a threat to humans may have to be put down. “Bears can get used to unnatural food in three weeks,” says Watts. “Everyone loses in this case.” Biological waste is also problematic. Dog waste brings new bacteria into the ecosystem and scares away deer. Meanwhile, human waste and toilet paper introduces dangerous bacteria into water sources. In national parks, trails (小路) are designed to avoid sensitive areas. Stepping off the trail, even for a quick photo, can scare wildlife away. Impacts from many visitors result in longterm damage to nature and wildlife. But people don’t think of that when they see the perfect photo opportunity. “It’s just such a hard thing to resist,” says Blye. The risk to sensitive ecosystems isn’t obvious. “It’s easy to think, oh, there’s wildflowers over there. I shouldn’t step on that,” says Blye, but these tiny ecosystems full of microscopic organisms essential to desert life provide many benefits, including reducing the risk of erosion (侵蚀) and helping absorb rainfall, and can take hundreds of years to return to its original state. 28. What does Ashley mean by “But that can be all it takes”? A. The rangers' work is efficient. B. The damage has been done. C. The cleanup takes a long time. D. The pollution has spread widely. 29. What is a result of foreign waste in public lands? A. A shift in animal behavior. B. A shortage of food supplies. C. A decline in bacterial species. D. An increase in regional conflicts. 30. Why does the writer mention wildflowers in paragraph 5? A. To praise their benefits to desert life. B. To highlight our damage to ecosystems. C. To stress their significance for photography. D. To show our unawareness of nature’s sensitivity. 31. It is conveyed in this passage that we should _______. A. encourage wildlife protection B. leave no trace in the wild C. promote national park tourism D. restore ecological damage D In cultures worldwide, toys have been used to teach children about the society they live in. Recent research reveals that giving the wrong toys may have contributed to the downfall of the Norse settlers who came to Greenland from Iceland. Arriving in 985, the Norse thrived for a few centuries but were forced to abandon Greenland by 1400. In contrast, the Inuit people, arriving around 1000, endured long after the Norse left. This difference has puzzled archaeologists for decades. One idea was that the Norse did not eat more seafood when farming conditions worsened. But studies of Norse teeth show that they did turn to the ocean for food. Archaeologists agree that the Inuits adapted successfully while the Norse did not, but nobody knows why. To try to answer the question, the researchers looked at as many toys as they could find that had once been played with by the children of either culture. The Norse settlements yielded 72. The Inuit settlements, located in similar environmental conditions, yielded 2,397. The researchers then assigned each toy to one of five categories, including toys of weapons, tools, forms of transport, for social play and for skill play. They also determined approximate times for when the toys were made. The categorisation process revealed that the Inuit children not only had more toys available to them, but that these toys were more diverse. Most importantly, it was found that the differences in the number and diversity of toys grew dramatically over time. As the years went by, toys associated with hunting at sea became more common among the Inuit, but the Norse continued to give their children figurines of horses and birds. In essence, say the researchers, the Norse were adapting their lives to their new environment but continuing to gift old-fashioned toys. Though the lack of toys may indicate that Norse society was less creative from the start, the researchers argue that their tendency to give irrelevant toys intensified any initial lack of creativity and ultimately reduced their chances of survival. In contrast, the Inuits’ preference for diverse and relevant toys paved the way for their children to be more innovative and adaptive. A lesson for parents if ever there was one. 32. What did the toy study aim to further investigate? A. The Norse’s dietary change. B. The Norse’s failure to endure. C. The Inuits’ fishing advantage. D. The Inuits’ success in farming. 33. What was a major advantage that Inuit toys had over Norse toys? A. Safety. B. Diversity. C. Interactivity. D. Portability. 34.What lesson can modern parents draw from the study? A. Provide a wide range of play opportunities. B. Emphasize toys that promote imagination. C. Choose toys that develop real-world skills. D. Encourage cooperative role-playing games. 35. Which of the following best reflects the main idea of the text? A. Survival is a case of child’s play. B. Sticking to cultural essence is vital. C. Innovation comes naturally over time. D. Cultural adaptation relies on children. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 36. Each time we weather difficulties, we build up resilience and recognize our own inner strength and determination to overcome challenges, making us better equipped mentally for whatever happens in the future. When we’ve gone through difficulties, it’s essential to take a step back and ask ourselves tough questions. What led to this situation? How can we grow from it? 38. Li Hua Head, Sports Department The Student Union of Nanjing No.1 High School 第二节(满分25分) 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。 The icy winds of Montana whipped across the interstate, a brutal reminder of the December storm that had just passed. Inside the cab of his 18-wheeler, German Segura gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles (指关节) white. On the other end of the phone, his wife Elsa’s voice was mixed with worry. “I’m fine, mi amor (西班牙语:我的爱), just a little ice,” he reassured her, his eyes scanning the road ahead. To lighten the mood, he searched for something to say. His gaze fell upon a pine tree, standing resiliently in the deep snow of the median strip (中央隔离带), its branches heavy with frost. A joke sparked in his mind. “I just passed a little orphan in the middle of the road,” he said with a chuckle (轻笑), “and he’s got no jacket on! Shivering in all this snow.” Elsa, ever compassionate, immediately replied, “German Segura! You turn around right now and give that child your jacket!” Amused by her seriousness, German played along. He pulled his massive truck onto the shoulder (路肩), opened and slammed the door shut, and got back on the phone. “All done, jefe (西班牙语:老板). The orphan is warm now.” They shared a laugh, and soon after, Elsa ended the call. But as German continued his long trip to Calgary, a peculiar sense of guilt settled over him. The image of the lone tree, which he had personified as an orphan, lingered in his mind. He felt he had lied, not just to his wife, but to the tree itself. “Next Christmas,” he muttered to himself, making a silent promise, “I will come back. I will dress you properly. I promise.” True to his word, the following November, on a southbound trip, German pulled over at the same spot. From his cab, he produced a box of simple, colorful baubles (小装饰球) and a string of tinsel (闪亮金属丝). He carefully decorated the tree, transforming it into a beacon (灯塔) of cheer in the vast, empty landscape. It was a quiet act, a personal promise kept. The year after, he returned with more decorations: a star for the top and a few handmade ornaments. He was hanging a shiny red ball when the reflection of flashing red and blue lights suddenly illuminated the glass ornament. A police cruiser (警车) had pulled up behind him. German froze, his heart leaping into his throat. The door of the cruiser opened, and a tall officer stepped out, his expression unreadable in the twilight. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: German's heart pounded as the officer approached, expecting a blame. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: That encounter marked a turning point for the little tree's destiny. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 南京一中2025-2026学年度第一学期12月阶段性检测卷 高二英语 答案 第一部分:听力 略 第二部分 阅读理解(共20小题,满分50分) 第一节(21-35小题,每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 21. The main reasons are as follows. Firstly, rugby is a contact sport with high injury risks, and we lack professional coaches to ensure safety. Secondly, there is no suitable venue on campus for rugby training. Additionally, most Grade 1 students are busy with adaptation to senior high school studies, making it hard to guarantee regular club activities. Thank you for your understanding and continued support. Li Hua Head, Sports Department The Student Union of Nanjing No.1 High School 第二节 故事续写(满分25分) 参考范文: Paragraph 1: German's heart pounded as the officer approached, expecting a blame. He hastily put down the ornament and prepared to apologize for any violation. Unexpectedly, the officer smiled and said, "I’ve passed by here many times, and this tree is the most lively spot in the winter." German relaxed and told him the story of his promise to his wife and the tree. The officer nodded in approval, praising his sincerity and kindness. Before leaving, he took a photo of the decorated tree, saying it would bring warmth to his colleagues. Paragraph 2: That encounter marked a turning point for the little tree's destiny. The officer shared the photo online, and the "Christmas tree on the interstate" soon became a local landmark. Every year before Christmas, volunteers and passers-by come to decorate it with German. The tree, once a lonely orphan in the snow, now stands as a symbol of promise and warmth, reminding everyone who passes by of the power of keeping one’s word and small acts of kindness. 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
