I started cooking for my 83-year-old grandmother when simpler forms of communication failed. She has Alzheimer’s and has become forever dazed (神志不清的).
I had moved back to Buffalo, New York, from Washington, D.C., in the hope of helping care for her. But I quickly realized how naive that idea was. My proximity (靠近) alone could not make an Alzheimer’s patient well. Instead, I brought her cut-out cookies, soups, roast beef sandwiches, and homemade meatballs — a special language that developed, over time, into a Wednesday night tradition.
Every week, I drive 30 minutes to my grandmother’s nursing home, with my food. I enjoy sitting with her and watching her eat. She takes tiny forkfuls, her hands quaking. The nurses say she eats the slowest of all their residents. Beans fall back into the soup bowl. Meatballs fall off her fork. But when she does get a mouthful, she will say, “Caitlin, I didn’t know you could cook!”
Last week, arriving too late for dinner, I brought her two peanut butter cookies. Grandma loved peanut butter before. But when I took off my coat and gave her the cookies, Grandma seemed nervous and asked, “Who are you? What are you doing in my room?”
“It’s Caitlin, your granddaughter. I brought you food,” I said.
To make her believe what I said, I took photos from her walls, and presented them to her: the two of us at my wedding (婚礼), and my high school graduation picture. I knew this moment (时刻) would come at some point, but I still feel sad every time my grandmother forgets who I am. I’m not ready to accept the reality of disappearing from her world.
That night, at least, the photos worked. Grandma once again remembered who I was.

Catherine Sevcenko, who is a lawyer, has spent her spare time helping birds in need since 2012. Diva Crows, a center which Sevcenko runs with volunteers to help birds go back into the wild, has helped more than 2,000 birds in Alexandria, Va.
Many of the fledgling crows (羽翼未丰的乌鸦) that appear at her door have fallen from trees, were hit by cars or crashed into windows. But there’s one thing that has not changed in the past 12 years: Each one is black. Sevcenko could hardly believe it when a rare (罕见的) crow she named Hope showed up last month. “I’d never seen a white crow before,” said Sevcenko.
The Wildlife Rescue League contacted Sevcenko and asked if she could take in a rare white fledgling crow that had been brought in by a man last month. The man said he’d saved the bird in Manassas Va. after he saw a group of adult crows attack the rare fledgling. “I told them, ‘Of course, I’ll take the bird’” said Sevcenko.
“We wanted to make every effort we could to get her back into the wild, but there are just too many dangers for a bird that looks like her,” Sevcenko said. “The chances of her getting accepted are pretty small, given the way she looks. When white crows are not accepted, they are forced to live alone, which for a crow is kind of painful. Crows are social birds that live in groups. And in groups, they’re not targets for predators (捕食性动物) like a white crow would be. Besides, white crows can develop vision (视力) problems, which makes it harder for them to find food.”
Recognizing these challenges, Sevcenko began looking for a wildlife education organization that could take her in. “I think she’ll be a good education bird,” she said. “She’s one of a kind.”
8. In what way is Hope special?
A. Voice. B. Weight. C. Appearance. D. Intelligence.
9. Why did the Wildlife Rescue League contact Sevcenko?
A. To share some tips on saving fledgling crows. B. To ask her about raising a fledgling crow.
C. To introduce her to an expert on crows. D. To collect some adult crows.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The health problems Hope has. B. The feeding habits Hope develops.
C. The efforts made to help Hope recover. D. The risks of setting Hope into the wild.
11. Which of the following can best describe Sevcenko?
A. Brave and creative. B. Inspiring and honest.
C. Loving and thoughtful. D. Organized and humorous.
D
There are certain songs that have the power to bring back memories (记忆) of youth — sitting in the park on a sunny day, dancing on a night out with your Uni mates ...
Are you thinking of yours now? Does it happen to be a song that takes you straight back to your teens or twenties? If so — you’re not alone.
Scientific studies show we remember more from our teens and early twenties than any other period of our lives. The music we listen to during this period has a greater lasting influence than songs in later life because of a psychological phenomenon (心理学现象) called the reminiscence bump.
We have fewer memories from birth to about eight years old, while later in life our minds can easily recall memories that happened most recently, although this does go down with age. However, researchers have found there is a key age between the ages of 10 to 30 years old when the reminiscence bump applies, meaning our memories have a particular affinity (喜好) for recalling events.
The reminiscence bump happens with everything, but music stands out.
Prof Loveday at the University of Westminster found there is a peak (高峰) in both memory and preference for music people listened to during their teenage years. One theory for why this happens is that our minds go through a rapid period of development during our teenage years and early twenties so our brains and memory systems are at their peak taking in as much information about the world as they can. And during this period, we start to make key decisions that help shape who we are. The musical reminiscence bump is so powerful because we connect music to these deeply emotional times.
So with this in mind, the next time you feel like listening to the old song “The Sign”, there’s no need to worry. It’s probably not your questionable music taste, it’s more likely music’s powerful ability to connect us with the people, places and moments that make us who we are.
12. What does the author expect readers to think of in paragraph 2?
A. A well-known song. B. A youth-related song.
C. An easy-to-sing song. D. A newly-learned song.
13. What may happen when the reminiscence bump applies?
A. Teenage life gets quite messy.
B. Teenagers develop an interest in music.
C. Teenagers face difficulties with memory.
D. Teenage events come back to memories a lot.
14. What does the theory in paragraph 6 talk about?
A. Teenagers’ brains develop differently.
B. Teenagers’ minds are particularly active.
C. Teenagers’ music taste is better than others.
D. Teenagers’ preferences for music change rapidly.
15. Why is “The Sign” mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To bring comfort to readers.
B. To change the music taste of readers.
C. To recommend old classics to readers.
D. To remind readers of some important musical events.

At the end of the class, Mr. Smith announced our assignment for the next Monday was to talk about someone we were grateful to instead of a book report. Upon hearing it, I couldn’t help complaining to Mareya that I was so nervous about having to talk in front of the whole class.
“ Arizona ,you’ve been in at least three plays ,” Mareya pointed out.“ If you don’ t get stage fright in front of those big audiences, why are you bothered by a few kids in our class ?”
It was true, but in a play you were part of a group. I shook my head. Plus, there were so many people I was grateful to. There was no way I could possibly pick just one. Plus, even if I picked one I’ d have no idea what to say. Plus, even if I figured out what to say, I was a million- percent positive I’ d mess up if I tried to say it out loud! I’ d be standing there with everyone staring at me, waiting for words to come out of my mouth.“ Oh , my goodness !” I pulled my sweatshirt hood ( 兜 帽 ) over my face, put my hands over my ears and said,“ I don’t want to talk about it !”
But one thing about really good friends who knew you really well was that they didn’ t always do exactly what you asked them to. Mareya could be pretty pushy talking of being helpful. She scribbled(潦草地写) something on a piece of paper , lifted my hood, and smiled. She’ d drawn a funny elephant (named Franky) with the word BREATHE coming out of its trunk .
“ This is Franky, the ‘everything is going to be all right’ elephant ” Mareya giggled. She held the picture up to her ear and asked, “What’ s that you say, Franky? You think my friend Arizona should come over to my house this weekend so we can work on our talks together?”

The man said he’d saved the bird in Manassas, Va. after he saw a group of adult crows attack the rare fledgling.

A. Brave and creative. B. Inspiring and honest.
C. Loving and thoughtful. D. Organized and humorous.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. C

【10题详解】

When white crows are not accepted, they are forced to live alone, which for a crow is kind of painful. Crows are social birds that live in groups. And in groups, they’re not targets for predators like a white crow would be. Besides, white crows can develop vision problems, which makes it harder for them to find food.’

We have fewer memories from birth to about eight years old while later in life our minds can easily recall memories that happened most recently, although this does go down with age.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. B 15. A

根据第六段“One theory for why this happens is that our minds go through a rapid period of development during our teenage years and early twenties so our brains and memory systems are at their peak taking in as much information about the world as they can.

故选A项。

【43题详解】
考查过去分词。句意:在夏令营期间建立的友谊将在我心中占据一个特殊的位置。此处为非谓语动词作定语修饰名词friendships,make与friendships之间为被动关系,所以此处使用过去分词形式。故填made。
【44题详解】

Dear fellow students
I feel greatly honored to stand here and give a speech entitled “To Know, To Participate”.
As we all know, cultural heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Therefore, it is of great importance for us to protect it.
First of all, we should know more about cultural heritage by attending campus lectures, reading related documents, or watching documentaries. Besides, we can take part in volunteer work in museums during our spare time.

【答案】例文1:
Paragraph 1:
And that was exactly what happened.
Arizona and I sat at the desk at the study in her house on Saturday afternoon. I asked her curiously who she would pick to talk about. “ My grandma ”. She blurted out. She told me she was grateful to her grandma, who took great pains to bring her up despite poor health. From her excited look and gentle tone, I could feel her deep gratitude and love for her grandma. I was so immersed in her talk that I didn't t notice she had finished it until she patted my shoulder. She then suggested I talk about my mum. I followed her advice as I had no other good ideas. She also helped me organize my ideas and gave me patient guidance on my gestures, emotions and eye contact when practising the presentation in her presence . She was so helpful that I got prepared for my talk very smoothly.
Paragraph 2:
On Monday morning, however, I decided to talk about Mareya.
Though it was true that there were many people I was grateful to, I thought it was Mareya that I should express my gratitude to the here and now. When my turn came, I mustered up courage and stepped onto the platform. I couldn’t help looking at Mareya and found her smiling and cheering for me. Clearing my throat, I started: “ Today , I’d like to talk about Mareya , a friend I will always be grateful to .” Hearing the words, Mareya widened her eyes and looked at me in surprise. Then I recalled good times spent with Mareya and how she managed to help me out whenever I was in trouble. Upon finishing the talk, I trotted towards Mareya and gave her a bear hug. Meanwhile, thunderous applause rang through the classroom.
例文2:
And that was exactly what happened.
Magically, I did go to Mareya’s house to work on the talks together. We discussed, finalized the draft, and rehearse the homework. But I was still unsure if I could make it in front of the whole class." Just imagine all the elephants drawn by me are those big audiences” suggested Mareya, sticking all the pictures of Franky to each chair . It did work! Never did I felt nervous. I was so grateful for the elephants that I decided to talk about Franky on Monday morning. Mareya giggled and nodded her head.
Paragraph 2:
On Monday morning, however, I decided to talk about Mareya . Obviously, there being no extra time for me to modify my draft, I stepped on the stage and delivered my speech without any draft.” Today, I’d like to talk about Mareya, she doesn’ t always do exactly what I asked her to. Plus, she doesn’ t hesitate to be helpful whenever I am in need. Plus, she doesn’ t fail to draw kinds of magical elephants to conceive me that everything is going to be all right ….” After I finished, the audience burst into thunderous applause. Not until then, did I realize who I needed to be grateful to. I threw myself to Mareya’s arms, held back my welling tears and said " Thanks , Mareya ”
例文 3:
And that was exactly what happened. Reluctantly, I inched my way into Mareya’s room. I sank into the chair, not knowing what to do. Maeya suggested that we pick _ one of the persons I appreciated first. My mind raced quickly and people’s names flooded in. I finally chose one Then Mareya encouraged me to write down what the person did moved me. Finally, with Mareya’s help, I even read it out aloud. But at night, I tossed and turned, thinking there must be something important ignored by me.
On Monday morning, however, I decided to talk about Mareya. Yes, it dawned on me that I had always ignored Mareya even though we spent so much time together. The memories that Mareya constantly encouraged and comforted me crowded into my mind. And it was also Mareya who created Franky, the lovely elephant to help me overcome my fear. I even didn’t need to write down my gratitude because the words just poured out as my eyes fell on her. After my speech, she came up to me and firmly said " That’ s what friends do !”
