It’s a warm Saturday afternoon in a busy side road in the old district of Barcelona. The pedestrians (行人) are standing in a semi-circle around someone or something in front of the cathedral. I push my way through the crowd and find a quartet of musicians playing a violin suite of classical music. The session lasts ten minutes. Then one of the musicians picks up a saucer on the ground, and asks for money. All contributions are voluntary, no one has to pay, but the crowd shrinks as some people slide away. But others happily throw in a few coins. They’re grateful for this brief interval of music as they go shopping.
Below the window of my apartment in Paris, a music man takes a place made empty by an earlier musician. He raises the lid of his barrel organ (手摇风琴) and turns the handle. Then he sings the songs of old Paris, songs of the people and their love affairs. I remember some of the words even though I have never consciously learned them. I tap my feet and sing along with him. Down there on the pavement, few passers-by stop. Some smile, while others walk past with their heads down. Cars pass, gangs of boys form and disappear, someone even puts a coin in the cup on the organ. But the music man ignores them all. He’s hot in the sun, so he mops his head with a spotted handkerchief. He just keeps singing and turning the handle.
The street musician is keeping alive a culture which has almost disappeared in our busy, organized, and ordered lives: the sound of music when you least expect it. In a recording studio, even when relayed by microphone, music loses some of its liveliness. But street music gives life to everyone who listens and offers relief from the cares of the day. It only exists in the present; it only has meaning in the context. It needs space.
4. What do we know about the street musicians in Barcelona?
A. They play music in a quiet residential area. B. Their show lasts less than 10 minutes.
C. All passers-by donate money to them. D. They perform classical violin music.
5. What can we infer about the music man in Paris?
A. He feels disappointed with the small number of tips.
B. He focuses on his performance despite the environment.
C. He stops singing to interact with the passersby.
D. He chooses the spot because it is always crowded.
6. What does street music bring to people according to the passage?
A. A way to make money easily. B. A break from their regular lives.
C. A chance to learn different cultures. D. A reason to gather in public spaces.
7. What does the author imply about studio-recorded music in contrast to street music?
A. It fails to connect with listeners emotionally. B. It is less capable of bringing joy to people.
C. It lacks the naturalness that makes music vivid. D. It is not as widely enjoyed by the public.
C
Generation Alpha is the youngest identified generation in the world This generation was the first to be born entirely in the 21st century.
Inundated with technology from a young age, the children from Generation Alpha have never known a time without electronics. They have been immersed in electronics since they were little. Pew Research Center surveyed to find out that more than any other generation, children of this generation were given electronics even before they could walk or talk.
For this survey, parents were asked if their child has access to a television, smartphone or gaming device. The most common electronic device for children to have access to was a television, with 88% of children under age 11 having access. The percentage of children who have a computer or gaming device was 44%. When divided by age group, the percentages got higher the older a child was. However, 16% of parents with children younger than five said their child has access to a computer. Similarly, 9% said their child under two had access to a gaming device.
Researchers also want to see the effects this level of screen time has on children. Although there may be positive effects on the digital literacy of Generation Alpha, there also may be many adverse effects that have yet to be seen. One of the positive effects of the widespread use of technology is that access to other cultures for social media has allowed the generation to become familiar with traditions from other countries and cultures.
Considered the most tech-savvy (技术娴熟的) generation yet, from the time they were born, the world was paying attention to Generation Alpha. While there are many predictions about who they will become, it is still up to the members of this generation to create their own identities.
8. Which is the closest meaning to the underlined phrase “Inundated with” in paragraph 2?
A. Mixed with. B. Flooded with. C. Covered with. D. Satisfied with.
9. What can be inferred from the data mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. Children prefer TVs to any other devices.
B. One in ten children has their own gaming devices.
C. TVs are more common than computers in households.
D. The ownership of electronics increases as children grow older.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of Generation Alpha?
A. Uncertain but hopeful. B. Optimistic and assured.
C. Critical but sympathetic. D. Indifferent and objective.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To express concerns for Generation Alpha.
B. To introduce the features of Generation Alpha.
C. To warn the risks of screen exposure for Generation Alpha.
D. To discuss the effects technology has on Generation Alpha
D
Scientists from the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HIPS) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences have designed a watch that can measure essential chemicals in body sweat. Their findings were published in the journal AC Nano.
Sweat contains electrolytes (电解质), primarily potassium, sodium and calcium. The balance of these essential chemicals is critical for supporting muscle function, nerve health and regular heart beat. The watch collects sweat from the skin and analyzes it in real time using a sensor chip with sensitive membrane (膜). When sweat enters the device, it will come into contact with the membrane that contains three small tubes capable of measuring potassium, sodium and calcium levels.
Although they are not the first to invent sweat sensors, the Chinese researchers emphasized the watch’s solid interface for long-term reliability. “It is greater than the stability of many other sensors by consistently monitoring the three ions in human sweat for over six months,” said researcher Huang Xingjiu.
Researchers in the study measured the sweat composition of these chemicals in athletes running long distances on a running track. The accuracy reached about 95 percent when compared to the standard detection method. “The aim of developing this device is to provide warnings for electrolyte loss and reduce exercise-related injury risks.”
For ordinary people, the orthodox electrolyte test requires samples of sweat taken in hospitals. The new watch has the potential to serve as a replacement for needles for monitoring electrolyte levels. The next goal of the research team is to design various sensitive membrane materials for monitoring more physiological information. The researchers noted that compared with popular fitness watches on the market, the device they designed is larger and heavier, making it less comfortable to wear. However, they expect to develop wearable sweat sensors suitable for market applications in the next five years. They also intend to adapt the device for environmental monitoring to measure heavy metals in the future.
12 What can we learn about the watch designed by HIPS scientists?
A. It is the first device that can detect chemicals in sweat.
B. It uses an ion-sensitive membrane to analyze sweat in real time.
C. It only measures the levels of potassium and sodium in sweat.
D. Its stability is worse than that of most existing sweat sensors.
13. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. The wristwatch is more accurate than the standard detection methods.
B. Long-distance running has little effect on athletes’ electrolyte balance.
C. Sports-related injury is possibly connected with electrolyte loss.
D. Athletes need to make up for electrolyte loss after using the device.
14. The underlined word “orthodox” in paragraph 5 probably means “________”.
A. traditional B. advanced C. convenient D. expensive
15. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. The Role of Electrolytes in Preventing Sports Injuries
B. The Future Trends of Health Monitoring Devices
C. A New Wristwatch for Measuring Electrolytes in Sweat
D. A Comparison of Conventional and New Sweat Test Methods

At the age of 30, I resigned to start my own business. I felt like I was on the right path. I was busy making plans happen. For months, I kept myself moving. Even when I wasn’t working, I was thinking about work. There was never enough time, and I was afraid that if I stopped to relax, I might let someone down. But the more I worked, the less I seemed to get done.
When I started to feel really tired, I told myself I just needed to work harder and get more organized. But something was wrong. I was very tired and my body hurt all over. My smart watch kept buzzing (嗡嗡声), telling me my heart was beating too fast. I had tried hard to be healthy — I stopped drinking, changed my diet, and lost weight. I thought things would get better, but they didn’t.
Finally, I went to a doctor. “How’s your stress?” the doctor asked. I didn’t think I was very stressed, but tests showed I had a disease called Graves’ disease, which can get worse because of stress.
The next day, I ran into an old friend, Cindy. We hadn’t seen each other for a while, and Cindy looked at me with concern. “You look tired. I don’t know how you are doing, but you seems to be wearing out.”
“Things have been a bit crazy lately,” I admitted.
“Maybe it’s time to take a break,” Cindy suggested. As we said goodbye, she added, “It was good to see you. You’ve lost weight; make sure you take care of yourself.” She waved and left.
Reflecting on my previous behavior, I realized I had been missing the simple pleasures in life — the little but meaningful things that help me relax and recharge, like bonding with my family, engaging in community activities to help those in need, interacting with friends and visiting my favorite bookstore.
Days later, Cindy called and asked, “There’s a charity event dedicated to helping the left-behind children and elderly people who live alone in our community this weekend. Would you like to go with me and offer your help?”

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 I was hesitant at first, but I decided to give it a try. Accompanied by Cindy, I spent the weekend working as a volunteer there. We organized games to interact with the left-behind children and the experience was heart-warming when I saw their initial shyness gradually transformed into smiles and laughter. We also helped clean the rooms of elderly people in a nursing house, chatted with them, and listened to their stories. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and love. For the first time in months, I forgot about work and gained a sense of authentic pleasure in life.
After that memorable day, I decided to make a change to my life. I still work hard on my business, but I also reserve time for those simple pleasures. I sign up for volunteer activities, finding joy in the smiles of those less fortunate. I have heart-to-heart conversations with my family over delicious home-cooked meals and visit bookstores where I lose myself in the wisdom of written words. With this new routine, my health gradually improves and I rediscover the path to true well-being. I am ready to embrace a new chapter, one that includes both ambition and the joy of living.
