As a child I read books with great interest until I went to sleep. When my
GCSEs came around,I revised for hours without pause ()But in recent
years,I've found that I prefer scrolling (on my phone to reading for
pleasure.
So,about a year ago,I made a promise:every time I came across a word I
didn't know-in a novel,an article or a conversation-I would look it up
and write it down.I wouldn't use any pen or notebook, just to keep a running
list on my phone. Each week,I'd spend a few minutes reading the list back to
try to keep the words in mind.
The list now expands almost 20 pages. Each time I look up and record a
word,I feel a slight change,,as though some neglected(忽视的)part of my
brain is working again. There is also an important element to it-it functions
as something of a diary,a record of what I've been reading and thinking about,
and who I've been listening to.
It's not an easy habit to keep up.If I'm reading on the underground,I
have to stop mid-paragraph,pull out my phone and type the new word I come
across into my digital doc.And then there's the revising which I often forget to
do,dutifully scrolling through my growing words list,as if I were preparing

for a vocabulary test.
Still,it's made my mind much sharper.I find myself reaching less often
for the same tiring handful of adjectives, and more often for something clear
and exact.Few things are more satisfying than finding the exact word you
were searching for. This small habit renewed my love of reading. In an era
when our devices attract our attention,it is important to use my brain as a tool
for slow thinking. And it has given me back something I feared I'd lost-the
pleasure of exercising a mind that, after years of scrolling on my phone,is
finally waking up again.

A.To test her memory.
B.To go on a research.

27.Which of the following words can best describe the impact of this habit?

Many people in America believe that "more is better".College students
often share this idea when they use laptops in class.Laptops do allow students
to do more, such as getting engaged in online activities, and accessing
information from the Internet. In fact, students who use laptops often take
many more notes than those who write by hand. Moreover, when students take
notes using laptops, they tend to take notes verbatim, writing down every word
the teacher says.Obviously, they believe that it is advantageous to take more

complete notes that are useful for later review.
However, research by Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer shows a
surprising result.Across the experiments,Mueller and Oppenheimer had
students take notes in a classroom setting and then tested students on their
memory for factual detail, their conceptual understanding of the
material, and their ability to generalize the information.Half of the students
were instructed to take notes with a laptop, and the other half were instructed
to write the notes out by hand.In each study, however, those who wrote out
their notes by hand had a stronger conceptual understanding and were more
successful in applying the material than those who took notes with their
laptops.
What drives this unexpected finding?Writing by hand is slower and
forces students to listen carefully. They must think about what is important and
then summarize the information in their own words. This process makes the
brain work harder and helps them understand and remember better. On the
other hand, typing on a laptop is so fast that many students write everything
down without thinking deeply about the lecture. This type of note-taking does
not help them learn well.
The research by Mueller and Oppenheimer serves as a reminder, however,
that even when technology allows us to do more in less time,it does not
always foster (learning.Even though laptops let students record a lot of
information quickly, deep learning happens when the brain must work to
choose and summarize key ideas.
28.What does the underlined word "verbatim"in the first paragraph mean?
A.Exactly as spoken.
B.Perfectly as told.
C.Creatively as expected.
D.Regularly as they do.

A.Students who take notes with a laptop learn more.
B.More complete notes are very useful for later review.
C.College teachers increasingly turn to technology in class.
D.Students who write out their notes on paper outperform the rest.

Joey and Katie Mims might be the middle-class model. They are raising a
son and they found a home in the city they love:Lincoln,Nebraska.
Jobs and homes are two areas that have recently presented Lincoln and
other cities with an unusual problem.Lincoln is at the top of a list measuring
labor market tightness(劳动力市场紧张程度).n cities like Provo,Utah, and
Lexington,Kentucky, the number of job openings is more than double the
number of unemployed persons.In Lincoln,it's nearly four-to-one.
“We're a largely rural(农村的)state,so as people go to college and move
out of those communities, they aren't coming back in.And so,we have a lot of
people moving out of our state and we're trying to find ways to bring people
into our state,"Joey Mims said.
For the past year,Nebraska governor Pete Ricketts has tried to find ways
to encourage people to work.Last fall, the state spent $10 million on a national
ad campaign to attract people to move there.
Wayne Mortensen runs Neighbor Works Lincoln,a non-profit that plans to
empower homeowners."You can't fill jobs and bring people to Nebraska with
housing you don't have,"Mortensen said.
Lincoln,like many mid-sized cities,doesn't have enough affordable
housing to support the middle-class employees they'd like to attract."In our
area, anything that goes up for sale is either bought by some companies and
turned into a rental or is upgraded and sold for twice what a family just starting
out can afford,"Katie said.
Dr.Roger Tutterow,an economics professor at Kennesaw State
University in Georgia, said times are hard for a lot of people right now."If

you're in a tight labor market and a tight housing market,it's a difficult
situation because you may look at a city where there's a great employment
chance, but if you can't find the housing that's suitable in terms of
affordability or location ()then that may discourage you from moving
here,”he said.
Joey and Katie had jobs. But in the Lincoln market, they couldn't find a
home before receiving help from Neighbor Works."Our story isn't unique, but
it means so much to us that I want other people to have the same experience,"
Joey said.

In fact,it's a very British thing to do,and it has nothing to do with taste.
The British habit of putting milk in tea might date back to the 18th
century.
38
However, most people couldn't afford fine bone
china cups, and the cups available would crack from the heat of the
hot tea.
The solution?39.The cold milk cooled down the tea enough to
keep the china from breaking, and, well, the reduced bitterness was just an
added advantage!Tea was also expensive at the time,so families who couldn't
afford large amounts would add a large amount of milk and a small amount of
tea, while well-off families would do the opposite.
40?The answer is:Not really. You can add as little or as much
milk as you please -though adding milk first and then pouring (the tea
on top might make it taste better. This is because when you add hot tea to cold
milk, you're bringing the milk to the temperature of the tea, distributing the
flavor(使味道分散)more evenly..However,if you add milk to tea,you're
cooling the tea down, and it may not taste as good.
A.I used to be a lover of Indian milk tea
B.Personally, though,I favour a hot cup of tea
C.Pour milk into the cup first, then add the tea
D.Is there a right way to drink your tea with milk
E.Does it taste better to add a large amount of milk into tea
F.The one thing I can't get behind, though,is adding milk to my tea
G.Tea was a big deal at the time, and people drank it out of china cups
