The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They had watched their mother making breakfast in the kitchen many times. “There is nothing to it. We know exactly what to do,” they thought.
The big day came at last. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot, and the bread turned black within seconds. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna went into a panic. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain.
The twins stared at the chaos around them, unsure what to do next. Just then, their father appeared. With his help, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on to cook porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. Then he stood by and watched them finish. This time, everything went right. A delicious breakfast was finally ready. Their father smiled and went back upstairs quietly.
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. Her face lit up when she saw the beautifully prepared meal. She praised them warmly, but the twins lowered their heads.
Looking up, Jenna admitted, “It didn’t go the way we planned. We always thought making breakfast was a piece of cake.”
“But it isn’t,” Jeff added. “We made a big mess, and Dad had to come and help us.”
Jenna continued, “On this Mother’s Day, we want to thank you for all the care and effort you put in every morning.”
Their mother looked at them with soft eyes. “I think you should thank your father, too, for stepping in to help,” she said.
“And starting tomorrow,” Jeff said, “we’re going to learn to make our own breakfast and take on our share of duties.”
24. What did the twins think of making breakfast at first?
A. Easy. B. Bored. C. Relaxing. D. Challenging.
25. What happened when the twins prepared the meal on their own?
A. They remained calm the entire time.
B. They ran into one problem after another.
C. They finished making the meal smoothly.
D. They complained about each other at times.
26. Which word would best describe the twins’ father?
A. Supportive. B. Adaptive. C. Creative. D. Reflective.
27. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Love grows through sharing food.
B. Family traditions start at breakfast.
C. Housework teaches children to be thankful.
D. Duties help people face difficulties through life.

Give yourself a test. Which way is the wind blowing? How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door?
I remember leading one of my wilderness classes out. We passed numerous deer, foxes, a cottontail, groundhogs, and countless birds and insects. Nobody noticed even one of them. When I went through the list, the students were angry at themselves for having missed so much.
Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child’s day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder. The desire to explore, to have an adventure, gave us all a natural sense. But this sense weakens as we grow up. And we are numb when we become adults. We don’t see a loaf of bread as coming from a wheat field blown by the wind. The apples we buy seem to come from a supermarket rather than from a tree. Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits.
The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it actually happens. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring. Later, they all admitted they’d felt cold water at first.
Another block to awareness is too much interest many of us have in naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said: a “ruby-crowned kinglet” and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing.
The pressures of “time” and “destination” are further blocks to awareness. I encountered many hikers who were headed to a distant campground with just enough time to get there before dark. It seldom occurred to them to wander a bit, to take a moment to see what’s around them. I asked them what they’d seen. “Oh, a few birds,” they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.
Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this state of mind, and you will open a new path in your life.
28. What does the word “numb” underlined in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Less aware. B. Less satisfied.
C. Less imaginative. D. Less energetic.
29. It is implied in Paragraph 4 that we should ________.
A. avoid jumping to conclusions
B. stop complaining all the time
C. follow the teacher’s advice
D. admit mistakes honestly
30. What can we learn from this passage?
A. A fixed goal can reduce the boredom during hiking.
B. The wilderness class can help students lessen stress.
C. Walking in unfamiliar places can renew our view of life.
D. Focus overly on naming things can prevent real observation.
31. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. Value Our Earth Save Our Future
B. Open the Mind, Explore New Ideas
C. Fill Your Senses, Light Up Your Life
D. Break Bad Habits, Build Better Balance
D
For decades, scientists believed that the slow rise of South Africa’s southern coast was caused by forces deep within the Earth. However, a new study in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth reports a new finding. By using data (数据)from advanced observation technology in space, the research suggests the land rise may have more to do with the loss of groundwater resulting from human activity.
What might be most surprising about South Africa’s situation is not the rising land itself, but this misunderstanding. What was once thought to be caused by slow movements deep inside Earth may instead reflect human activity.
Human activity has long been using up South Africa’s groundwater. In 2018, after years of severe droughts (干旱), the country almost faced a full water crisis — Cape Town nearly became the world’s first major city to truly run out of water, a situation called “Day Zero”.
The new study proposes an idea: the ground, once pressed by the heavy weight of surface water and groundwater, is now springing back like a foam mattress (泡沫床垫)after the pressure is removed. Between 2000 and 2021, the researchers found about a six-millimeter rise in the land surface — a change that lines up with humans using up South Africa’s water stores and periods of drought.
The new study shows the tie between water and land movement in South Africa’s southern coast. The land goes down slightly during rainy seasons and rises during dry periods. This “seasonal breathing” is a key sign. If the cause were deep Earth forces, the movement would be steady and not linked to rainfall cycles.
Besides South Africa, more examples in other regions highlight how human water use is physically reshaping the planet. In California’s San Joaquin Valley, taking too much groundwater has caused the land to drop sharply in some areas. Similarly, around the Chesapeake Bay on the U.S. East Coast, land sinking is worsening flood risks and sea-level rise.
Researchers note that Earth’s reaction to human-caused environmental change is complex (复杂的). The consequences are still being discovered, and they could be very significant. As climate change speeds up, land movements could make other problems worse. They are looking for ways to prevent land from shifting so much by keeping a careful balance. The solution, they say, isn’t just to take out less water. It’s also important to put water back into the ground it was taken from.
32. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?
A. Humans are unwilling to admit their mistakes.
B. New research can be driven by curiosity.
C. The forces of nature are unstoppable.
D. Earlier views can be challenged.
33. Why does the author mention the San Joaquin Valley and the Chesapeake Bay?
A. To explain the data collection.
B. To show the widespread phenomenon.
C. To provide a solution to the land uplift problem.
D. To contrast environmental changes in different areas.
34. What does the author mainly do in this passage?
A. Describe a process. B. Inform a discovery.
C. Introduce a system. D. Recommend a method.

When I was a child, I was often told what not to eat. “You don’t want to get fat” was on constant repeat throughout my childhood. It really messed up my relationship with food. That took me years to get past. Because of this, I’m careful not to connect what my kids weigh with their worth as people. I encourage my daughter to make healthy snack choices and often dissuade (劝阻)her from a second dessert. But one day, when I heard her say, “I think I’m too fat,” my heart sank.
Dr. Sarah, a psychology professor, says that when it comes to food, parents should talk less with their kids. She explains: “While it’s good to discuss many things in parenting, food is different. Always talking about it can create unnecessary stress for kids.”
Instead, she recommends the “Division of Responsibility,” where parents offer mostly healthy foods and children decide what and how much to eat.
Allowing kids to eat what they want helps them see what happens because of their choices. “When your child says, ‘My stomach hurts,’ you can say, ‘Well, you had a lot of sugary foods, and you might feel better if you made some other choices,’” says Sarah. “Let them feel like they have some control over it.”
I’ve been trying out the above advice with my children, and I’ve found that when I’m less controlling, they make better decisions. “Feeding is a long game,” says Sarah. “The food you have available makes a huge difference. Even if they don’t eat it, they’re seeing it. And then all of a sudden it clicks.”
40. According to Dr. Sarah, why should parents talk less about food with their kids?

故填who。

The ways we celebrate traditions can change over time. For example, Wang Peng and all his big family ____18____ (eat) out for their Spring Festival dinner for the last three years. He believes this ____19____ (have) nothing to do with loss of traditions. After all, they still have the dinner with the same people, just in a different place. Moreover, ____20____ all the tiring cooking at home, the occasion is more enjoyable, and the dishes taste better.
18. have eaten
19 has 20. without
时间状语“for the last three years”(在过去的三年里)通常与现在完成时连用。主语“Wang Peng and all his big family”是复数概念,所以助动词用 have。故填have eaten。
固定短语“have nothing to do with”意为“与……无关”,此处用第三人称单数形式has。故填has。
故填without。

D admit mistakes honestly
A. Value Our Earth, Save Our Future
B. Open the Mind, Explore New Ideas
C. Fill Your Senses, Light Up Your Life
D. Break Bad Habits, Build Better Balance
A 29. A 30. D 31. C

根据第三段中的“Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child’s day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder. The desire to explore, to have an adventure, gave us all a natural sense. But this sense weakens as we grow up. And we are numb when we become adults. We don’t see a loaf of bread as coming from a wheat field blown by the wind. The apples we buy seem to come from a supermarket rather than from a tree.(我们大多数人小时候观察到的东西比成年后多得多。 故选A项。
根据第四段中的“The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it actually happens. Later, they all admitted they’d felt cold water at first.(唤醒感官的第一步是在事情真正发生之前,停止预测我们将要看到和感受到的东西。 故选A项。
根据第五段中的“Another block to awareness is too much interest many of us have in naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said: a ‘ruby-crowned kinglet’ and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing.(另一个阻碍感知的因素是我们很多人对给事物命名过于感兴趣。我看到观鸟者发现一只鸟后,立即在野外指南中查找,然后说:这是一只“戴菊鸟”,并在清单上打了勾。他们不再关注这只鸟,也从未了解它在做什么)”可知,过于专注于给事物命名,会让我们不再关注事物本身的状态,阻碍真正的观察。故选D项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合最后一段“Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this state of mind, and you will open a new path in your life.(大自然的美好,只会向那些懂得驻足观察、耐心等待的人展现。
34 What does the author mainly do in this passage?
A. Describe a process. B. Inform a discovery.
C. Introduce a system. D. Recommend a method.
D 33. B 34. B

根据第一段中的“For decades, scientists believed that the slow rise of South Africa’s southern coast was caused by forces deep within the Earth. However, a new study in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth reports a new finding.(几十年来,科学家们一直认为南非南部海岸的缓慢抬升是由地球内部深处的力量引起的。然而,Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth上的一项新研究报告了一项新发现)”以及第二段中的“What was once thought to be caused by slow movements deep inside Earth may instead reflect human activity.(曾经被认为是由地球内部缓慢运动引起的现象,实际上可能反映了人类活动的影响)”可知,过去关于南非海岸抬升的观点被新研究质疑,由此可推断早期观点可能会受到挑战。
根据第六段中的“Besides South Africa, more examples in other regions highlight how human water use is physically reshaping the planet. In California’s San Joaquin Valley, taking too much groundwater has caused the land to drop sharply in some areas.

Sarah, a psychology professor, says that when it comes to food, parents should talk less with their kids. She explains: “While it’s good to discuss many things in parenting, food is different. Always talking about it can create unnecessary stress for kids.”(心理学教授萨拉博士说,在饮食方面,父母应该少和孩子谈论。她解释道:“虽然在育儿过程中讨论很多事情是好的,但饮食不一样。总是谈论饮食会给孩子带来不必要的压力。”)”可知,萨拉博士认为父母应少和孩子谈论饮食,是因为总是谈论饮食会给孩子带来不必要的压力。故填Because always talking about food can create unnecessary stress for kids.

Dear Jim,
It’s great to hear about your school’s exhibition on “Global Perspectives on Ecology.” For the theme of harmony between humans and nature, I strongly recommend introducing the “Milin Rice Terraces in Yunnan” as a Chinese example.
These terraces, cultivated by the Hani people for over 1,300 years, perfectly show how humans can work with nature rather than against it. The system includes forests at the top to collect rainwater, terraced fields to grow rice, and villages below. It not only provides food but also preserves water, soil, and biodiversity. This model reflects traditional Chinese ecological wisdom and is still thriving today. I believe it will help visitors understand that long-term harmony is possible.
Hope it will inspire your exhibit!
Best wishes,
Li Hua
