At the very beginning, street art was a means to share social comments or political ideas, but now it’s increasingly used in many places around the world to beautify the environment, sometimes becoming popular tourist attractions. Here’s my collection of street art around the world. Amsterdam, the Netherlands My hometown has plenty of fantastic street art. You can find some cool pieces in the Jordan neighborhood and in the North and West parts of the city. One place you absolutely have to visit in Amsterdam is the STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam North. This museum houses huge murals created by artists from around the world in an old industrial warehouse, and is a rich addition to the Amsterdam street art scene. Bristol, United Kingdom The birthplace of Banksy, one of the world’s most famous street artists, Bristol is another of the world’s great street art cities. You can find street art across the city on buildings, streets and bridges. The annual Upfest, in the Bedminster suburb, during which artists from around the world are invited to create street art on houses and buildings, is a popular attraction. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Rio de Janeiro also has a fantastic street art scene. For the 2016 Olympic Games, the city invited famous Brazilian street artist, Kobra, to create the world’s biggest mural along the Olympic Boulevard. The result is simply amazing! Click here to see street art in Rio de Janeiro, or my photos of Rio de Janeiro. 36 Why did people create street art at first? A. To practise painting skills. B. To show social or political opinions. C. To beautify the environment. D. To draw tourists at home and abroad. 37. What is a must-see street art attraction in the author’s hometown? A. The Olympic Boulevard in Rio. B. The birthplace of Banksy in Bristol. C. The annual Upfest in Bedminster. D. The STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam. 38. Where is this text probably taken from? A. An art website. B. A research paper. C. A travel journal. D. A history textbook. B I work at Pearson, the largest and busiest airport in Canada. I am one of the faces of Toronto that welcome millions of air travellers from all over the world. My daily work is helping connecting (转乘) passengers, for example, answering their questions about the boarding gate or departure time. After a long non-stop flight, these passengers are tired and hungry. They need coffee, breakfast and a lounge (候机室) instead of confusion as they wait anxiously to get their luggage and board their next flights. My job is to keep them calm and informed. Emotions can run high and the lounge is like a pressure cooker. Of course, connecting passengers don’t want to miss their flights. They are usually in a hurry. They are stressed out. You see, a lot of them are travelling for pleasure and going to places like Miami Beach and Yellowstone Park. But now they are out of breath and sweating. Some shout angrily, some are even in tears. They don’t seem to be having any fun at all. That is when it is time for empathy. We put ourselves in the passengers’ shoes and help them as much as we can. If we see the elderly trying to catch their planes but walking at a snail’s pace, we find a wheelchair for them immediately. When a plane is leaving in 15 minutes and the door is closing, what else can we suggest but: “Run! Run!” A few times, I have run with passengers to their boarding gate. It’s a race against time. Since passengers are just passing through, our interactions are brief. I say “Ni hao” to the Chinese and “Hola” to the Spanish. A simple greeting in their mother tongue can guarantee a smile from a total stranger and a tired traveller. Once, a young woman, who was on her way to visit her family in South Africa, told me she was expecting her first baby. I offered my congratulations and good luck. To all, I wish a pleasant trip, to groups off for a family wedding in Singapore, to seniors travelling to Rome for holiday, to children off to Disney World in Orlando... the airport is not a dull place. All kinds of human emotions are on display: sad, happy, anxious and upset. Sometimes I think no matter where we come from, what color our eyes, hair and skin, we are here to show our understanding and help. We are family. 39. What does the author’s job involve? A. Cleaning the lounge. B. Helping book hotels. C. Providing information. D. Selling food and drinks. 40. The lounge is like a pressure cooker because connecting passengers ______. A. are under social pressure B. are anxious about missing their flights C. are pleased with the airport staff D. are in high spirits after their journeys 41. What does the underlined word “empathy” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Understanding others’ feelings. B. Following the passengers’ steps. C. Recalling the memories of the trips. D. Avoiding giving unwise suggestions. 42. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4? A. A smile is no guarantee of quality service B. Kindness does not always pay off. C. Friendly interactions light up the day, D. Travelers need to know a second language. C Olympic athletes pour everything into training for the Games, routinely pushing their physical and mental limits — and beyond — for a shot at a gold medal. But getting into shape for what comes after the closing ceremony can be equally important, especially if the end of the Games also means the end of professional competition. Team USA rower Kate Knighton, a first-time Olympian at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris, understands the mental stress that a sudden exit from the highest levels of competitive life can bring. In 2022 she experienced a near career-ending spine (脊椎) injury. Many studies have found that top athletes — professional, college and Olympic — often face a range of short- and long-term mental health issues, including exhaustion, eating issues, anxiety and depression. Emotions are heightened by the nature of the event itself. The Olympics is a massive cultural event —a combination of global public attention, financial investment and media coverage. Athletes are under the pressure of winning medals for the nation in front of worldwide audience. “But then all of that publicity and tension around being an Olympian falls off very quickly,” says Cogan, a lead sport psychologist. Painful decisions can follow: Do I want to keep competing? Should I pursue a completely different direction or career? Such questions can be even more anxiety-causing if athletes have injuries and need surgery, Cogan says. It’s more about making a map of how to get to a destination. Once you get there, it’s like. “Now what?” A 2023 paper explained the identity crises athletes face as a result of overfocus on performance, leaving their non-sporting personalities underdeveloped. In a 2018 paper, Howells wrote that athletes with a greater short-sighted focus are more at risk of the “blues”. “They’ve sacrificed (牺牲) every other aspect of their identity for the purpose of being an Olympian. They seem unable to realize that their actions might have negative consequences in the future.” Efforts to minimize this mindset have helped some athletes to open up more about their mental health. Experts advise Olympians to start conversations about mental health support well before the Games begin. Olympians should also discuss mental health monitoring strategies before, during and after the Games. Athletes and experts say the sporting industry has, in the last decade, been promoting better work-life balance outside of the game, which they think is the key to dealing with the issue. Briana, a soccer goalkeeper, says that her team and coaches actively encourage spending quality time with families and significant others, as well as finding hobbies that feel joyful and rewarding. 43. Why does the author refer to Team USA rower Kate Knighton in the first paragraph? A. To prove Olympic athletes are challenging their limits. B. To suggest the end of the Games means a new start in life. C. To show Olympic athletes devote themselves to winning medals. D. To indicate mental stress is very common among Olympic athletes. 44. What is the main cause of Olympic athletes’ mental health issues? A. A sense of loss. B. The media coverage. C. The audience’s attention. D. The pressure of competition. 45. What’s the most important solution to the athletes’ mental health issue according to paragraphs 3-4? A. Adopting mental health monitoring strategies. B Discussing their problems openly and publicly. C. Developing a sense of identity beyond the sport. D. Adjusting their mindset of sacrificing themselves. 46. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Olympic Athletes Facing life bravely B. From Bad to Worse: Athletes’ Well-being C. Athletes Adapting to Post-Olympic Period D. From Hero to Zero: the Post-Olympic “Blues” D Why does social media cause feelings of loneliness and lack of confidence? Because instead of being real life, it is impression management, a way of marketing yourself, carefully choosing and filtering (过滤) the picture and words to put your best face forward. Online “friends” made through social media do not follow the normal psychological progression of friendship. You share neither physical time nor emotional conversations over the Internet. You simply communicate photographs and catchy posts to a diverse group of people whom you have “friended” or “followed” based on an accidental communication. This is not to say that your social media friends can’t be real friends. They absolutely can, but the two are not the same. Generally speaking, there are no unfiltered photos on our social media pages because it wouldn’t feel safe to be completely authentic (真实的) and we would be vulnerable (易受伤的) with some of our “friends” with whom trust has yet to be built. Social media can certainly be an escape from the daily routines, but we must be cautious about the negative effects on a person’s psychological well-being. As humans, we are eager for social connection. Scrolling (滚动) through pages of pictures and comments, however, does not provide the same degree of content as face-to-face communications do. Also, we tend to idealize others’ lives and compare our failures to their greatest achievements, ending in feelings of loneliness and lack of confidence. Social media can lead to unhealthy pursuit for perfection. Some people begin to attend certain events or travel to different places so that they can shoot that “perfect” photo. However, pictures and posts should be byproducts of life’s treasured moments and fun times, not the planned and calculated image that one is putting out into cyberspace in an attempt to fill insecurities or unmet needs. In conclusion, social media has increased our ability to connect with various types of people all over the globe. It has opened doors for business and allowed us to stay connected to people whom we may not otherwise get to follow. However, social media should feel like a fun experience, not one that contributes to negative thoughts and feelings. If the latter (后者) is the case, increasing face to face time with trusted friends and minimizing time scrolling online will prove to be a reminder that your real social network is much more rewarding than any “like”, “follow” or “share” can be. 47. How does social media affect our life ? A. It may improve our physical appearance. B. It may make us feel lonely and insecure. C. It may filter our negative impressions on others. D. It may enhance our communication skills. 48. Why do people always post filtered photos on social media? A. They do not want to lose their followers. B. They are eager to become famous overnight. C. They do not find all their online friends trustworthy. D. They want to avoid offending any of their audience. 49. What do humans tend to do on social media according to paragraph 4? A. Have more face-to-face communications. B. Exaggerate (夸大) their own achievements. C. Learn lessons from other people’s failures. D. Paint a rosy picture of other people’s lives. 50. What does the author advise when online experience becomes unpleasant in the last paragraph? A. Stay connected to online friends for suggestions. B. Strengthen ties with real-life friends instead of online friends. C. Connect with various types of people all over the globe. D. Avoid negative thoughts and feelings through online pages 第Ⅱ卷 Ⅴ.单词填空(10%) 51. She r________(代表) our class to participate in the school English Speech Contest last week. (根据中英文提示单词拼写) 52. 【答案】39. C 40. B 41. A 42. They are stressed out.(情绪可能会很激动,候机室就像一个高压锅。当然,转乘乘客不想错过他们的航班。他们通常很匆忙,压力很大)”可知,候机室像高压锅是因为转乘乘客担心错过航班而感到焦虑。故选B项。 【41题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“That is when it is time for empathy. We put ourselves in the passengers’ shoes and help them as much as we can.(那就是需要empathy的时候。我们设身处地为乘客着想,尽我们所能帮助他们)”可知,“put ourselves in the passengers’ shoes”(设身处地为乘客着想)是对empathy的解释,由此猜测其意为“理解他人的感受”。故选A项。 【42题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“Since passengers are just passing through, our interactions are brief. I say “Ni hao” to the Chinese and “Hola” to the Spanish. A simple greeting in their mother tongue can guarantee a smile from a total stranger and a tired traveller. A Adopting mental health monitoring strategies. B. Discussing their problems openly and publicly. From Hero to Zero: the Post-Olympic “Blues” 【答案】43. D 44. A 45. C 46. Once you get there, it’s like. 故选A项。 【45题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“A 2023 paper explained the identity crises athletes face as a result of overfocus on performance, leaving their non-sporting personalities underdeveloped.(2023年的一篇论文解释了运动员因过度关注表现而面临的身份认同危机,导致他们的非运动型人格发展不足)”和第四段中“Athletes and experts say the sporting industry has, in the last decade, been promoting better work-life balance outside of the game, which they think is the key to dealing with the issue.(运动员和专家表示,在过去十年中,体育产业一直在促进比赛之外更好的工作与生活平衡,他们认为这是解决这个问题的关键)”可知,根据第三和四段,解决运动员心理健康问题最重要的方法是培养运动以外的身份认同。故选C项。 【46题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“Many studies have found that top athletes — professional, college and Olympic — often face a range of short- and long-term mental health issues, including exhaustion, eating issues, anxiety and depression.(许多研究发现,顶级运动员——专业运动员、大学运动员和奥运会运动员——经常面临一系列短期和长期的心理健康问题,包括疲劳、饮食问题、焦虑和抑郁)”和第二段中“But then all of that publicity and tension around being an Olympian falls off very quickly,” says Cogan, a lead sport psychologist. Painful decisions can follow: Do I want to keep competing? Should I pursue a completely different direction or career? Such questions can be even more anxiety-causing if athletes have injuries and need surgery, Cogan says. It’s more about making a map of how to get to a destination. Once you get there, it’s like. 由此可知,D项“From Hero to Zero: the Post-Olympic “Blues”(从英雄到零:奥运会后的“忧郁”)”形象地概括了这一核心议题,是最佳标题。故选D项。 D Why does social media cause feelings of loneliness and lack of confidence? Social media can certainly be an escape from the daily routines but we must be cautious about the negative effects on a person’s psychological well-being. 47. There are two main reasons. Firstly, traditional festivals carry warm family bonds. During the Spring Festival, they gather with family to make dumplings, watch the Spring Festival Gala and exchange New Year greetings, enjoying the precious sense of belonging. Secondly, festivals allow them to experience unique cultural customs. For example, on the Dragon Boat Festival, they learn to make zongzi and listen to the story of Qu Yuan, which helps them understand the connotation of loyalty and patriotism. Traditional festivals are the essence of Chinese culture. As teenagers, we should actively participate in festival activities, inherit and carry forward traditional culture.
