Living more freely on the river
With high house prices, many in the UK are turning to the water to live in. While many struggle to buy a house, a growing number of people in Britain are choosing to live on boats instead.
According to The Economist, there were about 35,000 boats on canals (运河) in England and Wales in 2022, an increase of 33 percent over the past 20 years. Many of these boats are used as people’s homes.
Liam Quinn, 37, lived on a narrowboat (运河船) in and around London for several years. “I loved waking up to the water, and swans (天鹅) in the countryside,” he said. “One month, I’d be in the heart of the city, and the next parked next to a field. I could be in the heart of the countryside.”
Besides the beauty, living on a boat is also cheaper and gives people a sense of independence.
The cost of buying a narrowboat is usually between 50,000 pounds (about 450,000 yuan) and 100,000 pounds, according to Narrowboats UK. That’s cheaper than buying an apartment in London, where in the richest areas, prices average around 600,000 pounds.
“However, boat life isn’t always easy. There are many things to consider. It’s hard work taking care of the boat all the time and moving it every two weeks to follow the rules for people living on boats. Emptying the toilet and filling the boat with water were everyday tasks. I used laundrettes (自助洗衣店) for clothes, as having a washing machine on a boat doesn’t work,” said Quinn.
Even with problems, Quinn enjoyed his time owning a boat. “You become very practical (务实的), learning to take care of the boat yourself. Everyone is friendly and helpful, with an ‘all-in-it-together’ kind of feel,” Quinn said.
14. What do we know about Liam Quinn from his words in Paragraph 3?
A. He doesn’t like to live with people. B. He doesn’t live in a fixed spot.
C. He raises some animals in his boat. D. He changes cities once a month.
15. Paragraph 5 is written to describe that living on a boat ________.
A. is cheaper than buying an apartment B. gives people a sense of independence
C. is relaxed and full of exploration D. saves money on traveling
16. What rule do people living on boats have to follow?
A. Wash the boat with water every day. B. Take care of the parking area all the time.
C. Do not use a washing machine on a boat. D. Move the boat about every two weeks.
17. What does Quinn think about living on a boat?
A. Life is slower and freer. B. It’s challenging, but he likes it.
C. It gives him more “me” time. D. He learns to help others.

六、阅读表达 (共5小题,满分10分)
Scientists find that hard-working people can live longer than idle (不工作的) people. Career women are healthier than housewives. Evidence shows that the jobless are in poorer health than the job-holder. A report shows that whenever the unemployment rate (失业率) increases by 1%, the death rate increases by 2%. All this comes down to one point: Work is helpful to our health.
Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy, away from loneliness. Researches show that people feel not only unhappy but also worried when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. By work, people come into contact with each other. If people take part in some activities, they can find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work sometimes means the loss of everything. It affects man in spirit and makes him easy to get ill.
Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment (充实感). Work makes one feel his value in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words.
From the above we can know that the more you work, the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study well and live a happy and healthy life.
回答下面5个问题,每题答案不超过6个词。
48. Who can live longer, hard-working people or idle people?
