The Four Largest Marine protected areas
Marine protected areas (MPAs) are regions of the ocean set aside for long-term conservation. There are no official criteria, so the rules for each MPA vary.
Ross Sea Region MPA
The Ross Sea Region in Antarctica became an MPA on 1st December 2017. Set for a period of 35 years, the MPA is split into a no-take zone, where all fishing is forbidden, and two research zones, which allow limited fishing for research purposes.
Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument
As a vast oceanic area in the North Pacific, this MPA includes a string of tiny islands and reefs (礁) known as the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The zone is split into two parts. The outer section was added in 2016 and allows limited activities, such as scientific research and native-Hawaiian practices. The MPA protects 22 endangered species, like the green sea turtle and Laysan duck.
Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument
This area in the central Pacific Ocean is made up of seven islands and atolls (环礁). The shallow reefs in this remote zone support higher levels of coral diversity (180-190 species) than other atoll or reef islands in the central Pacific. Beyond the shallow coral reefs, extinct volcanoes drop off sharply to the deep floor of the equatorial Pacific Ocean where strange and splendid creatures live at great depths.
Natural Park of the coral Sea
Founded in 2014, this vast sea park includes the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the barrier reef around the island of Grande-Terre in New Caledonia in the South Pacific. The barrier reef is the third-longest in the world. However, with limited resources, the French government has almost no way of managing this vast area, and the park has received criticism for being a “paper park”.
1. What do we know about the first MPA?
A. It is in a polar region. B. It is in the South Pacific.
C. It has a history of 35 years. D. It has one research zone for fishing.
2. What do the second and the third MPA have in common?
A. They include some islands. B. They are split into two parts.
C. They are known for volcanoes. D. They feature world heritage sites.
3. Which MPA is poorly managed?
A. The first one. B. The second one.
C The third one. D. The fourth one.
【答案】1. A 2. A 3. D

Some mothers quietly change the world with dirty clothes in one hand and love in the other. And sometimes, it’s not their strength that changes everything — it’s what they do after they’ve been completely broken.
Kari Cox, a mom in Culloden, West Virginia, knows what it means to love hard — and lose harder. She and her husband, Bill, a special education teacher, have adopted and raised 14 children, many with special needs. Can you imagine the love and the disorder? For years, she lived the quiet miracle of motherhood: piles of dirty clothes, sticky floors, noise around the dinner table, and hugs that healed places no doctor ever could.
But even the strongest mothers fall apart sometimes. Thirteen years ago, Kari and Bill adopted Maribeth, a beautiful, brilliant girl with high-functioning autism (孤独症) and a black-and-white way of seeing the world. While they were lost in the happiness of a family, Maribeth was struck and killed by a car in 2021. It was a moment that shattered the Cox family.
She couldn’t imagine going through that kind of loss again. She had given her heart — and it was buried with her daughter. So Kari decided she was done. No more adoptions. No more risk. No more room for more heartbreak.
Until one day, as she was going through Maribeth’s things, she found her daughter’s journal. Maribeth, the girl who rarely shared her feelings, had written these words to herself: “I was lucky to be given what many may never have — a loving family that will always be here no matter what.”
At that moment, deep sadness cracked wide open by grace, and something shifted. The daughter who Kari thought was her last adoption became the reason for more. That journal didn’t just change Kari’s heart — it changed her mission. It made room for hope again.
4. What is the paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The work of the couple. B. The daily life of the family.
C. The healing effect of disorder. D. The special needs of the children.
5. What does the underlined word “shattered” in the paragraph 3 mean?
A. Expanded. B. Prevented. C. Destroyed. D. Surrounded.
6. What made Kari initially decide to stop adopting children?
A. Financial difficulties. B. Desire for a quieter life.
C. Need for rest. D. Fear of further heartbreak.
7. What message does the story mainly convey?
A. Hope can return even after deep loss. B. Love always brings pain and suffering.
C. Adopting children is a dangerous choice. D. Journals help people remember the past.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. A

【4题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Kari Cox, a mom in Culloden, West Virginia, knows what it means to love hard — and lose harder. She and her husband, Bill, a special education teacher, have adopted and raised 14 children, many with special needs. Can you imagine the love and the disorder? For years, she lived the quiet miracle of motherhood: piles of dirty clothes, sticky floors, noise around the dinner table, and hugs that healed places no doctor ever could.(卡里·考克斯是西弗吉尼亚州库勒登的一位母亲,她深知深沉的爱意味着什么——同时也意味着承受更大的痛苦。她和她的丈夫比尔(一位特殊教育教师)收养并抚养了14名孩子,其中许多都有特殊需求。你能想象那种爱与混乱吗?多年来,她过着母性的宁静奇迹般的生活:堆积如山的脏衣服、黏糊糊的地板、餐桌旁的嘈杂声,还有那些能治愈医生无法治愈的伤痛的拥抱)”可知,第二段整体描绘Kari的家庭的日常生活画面。故选B。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“While they were lost in the happiness of a family, Maribeth was struck and killed by a car in 2021.(当他们沉浸在幸福的家庭生活之中时,玛丽贝思在2021年被一辆汽车撞倒并不幸身亡)”可知,养女遭遇车祸身亡,这一时刻摧毁了这个家庭。故此处的shattered意为“摧毁;使破灭”。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“So Kari decided she was done. No more adoptions. No more risk. No more room for more heartbreak.(于是卡里决定不再继续了。不再进行收养了。不再承担任何风险了。不再让自己的心灵承受更多的痛苦了)”可知,Kari停止收养孩子是因为害怕再次经历心碎的痛苦。故选D。
【7题详解】

The ongoing climate change is ready to have serious and lasting consequences for plants across the globe. A research conducted by Liverpool John Moores University, UK is primarily focused on exploring how the nutritional content of food crops may be affected by the interacting effects of rising CO2 levels and increasing temperatures associated with climate change.
The research is focused on popular leafy vegetables, including kale, rocket and spinach. For this project, these crops are grown in environment-controlled growth rooms at Liverpool John Moores University, and the CO2 and temperature levels are changed to look like the UK’s predicted future climate conditions.
After the plants have been grown under climate change conditions, their nutritional quality was analyzed. Early results from this project suggest that raised levels of atmospheric CO2 can help crops grow faster and bigger, but certainly not healthier. After some time, the crops showed a reduction in key minerals like Ca and certain antioxidant compounds (抗氧化化合物). These changes were worsened by rising temperatures.
A key early finding is that different crops have responded differently to these climate change stressors, with some species reacting more intensely than others. “This diversity in response highlights that we can’t generalize across crop species. This complexity has been both fascinating and challenging and reminds us why it’s important to study multiple stressors together,” says Jiata Ugwah Ekele, a PhD student at Liverpool John Moores University, UK.
This nutritional imbalance poses serious health implications for humanity. While higher CO2 levels can increase the concentration of sugars in crops, it can decrease essential proteins, minerals and antioxidants.
“This changed balance could contribute to diets that are higher in calories but poorer in nutritional value,” says Ms. Ekele. “Increased sugar content in crops, especially fruits and vegetables, could lead to greater risks of extreme overweight and type 2 diabetes — particularly in populations already struggling with these diseases.”
8. What is the focus of the study?
A. Future climate conditions in the UK.
B. New types of leafy vegetables in the UK.
C. The way to grow crops faster in greenhouses.
D. Climate change and its impact on crop nutrition.
9. What was the condition of the crops grown for this research project?
A. Thinner air. B. Controlled water.
C. Higher CO2 level. D. Lower temperature.
10. How does Ms. Ekele sound in the last paragraph?
A. Annoyed. B. Concerned. C. Satisfied. D. Confident.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Bigger crops, fewer nutrients B. Faster growth, richer minerals
C. Warmer climate, balanced crops D. Higher CO2, healthier vegetables
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. A

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍英国一项研究探讨气候变化下二氧化碳浓度和气温上升对作物营养成分的影响,及其带来的健康隐患。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“A research conducted by Liverpool John Moores University, UK is primarily focused on exploring how the nutritional content of food crops may be affected by the interacting effects of rising CO2 levels and increasing temperatures associated with climate change.(英国利物浦约翰摩尔斯大学开展的一项研究,主要聚焦于探索与气候变化相关的二氧化碳浓度上升和气温升高的共同作用,会如何影响粮食作物的营养成分)”可知,该研究的核心是气候变化及其对作物营养的影响。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“For this project, these crops are grown in environment-controlled growth rooms... and the CO2 and temperature levels are changed to look like the UK’s predicted future climate conditions.(在该项目中,这些作物种植在环境可控的生长室中,二氧化碳和气温水平被调节至英国未来预测的气候状况)”以及第三段中的“Early results from this project suggest that raised levels of atmospheric CO2 can help crops grow faster and bigger(该项目的初步结果表明,大气中二氧化碳浓度升高能促使作物长得更快、更大)”可知,研究中作物的生长环境具有较高的二氧化碳浓度。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““This changed balance could contribute to diets that are higher in calories but poorer in nutritional value,” says Ms. Ekele. “Increased sugar content in crops, especially fruits and vegetables, could lead to greater risks of extreme overweight and type 2 diabetes — particularly in populations already struggling with these diseases.”(埃克莱女士表示:“这种营养平衡的改变,可能会导致人们的饮食热量更高、但营养价值却更低。”“农作物中糖分含量的增加 —— 尤其是果蔬类作物 —— 可能会提高重度肥胖和2型糖尿病的患病风险,对那些本就深受这些疾病困扰的人群来说,情况尤为严重。”)”可知,她的话语中充满了对作物营养变化给人类健康带来隐患的担忧。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第三段中“Early results from this project suggest that raised levels of atmospheric CO2 can help crops grow faster and bigger, but certainly not healthier. After some time, the crops showed a reduction in key minerals like Ca and certain antioxidant compounds. These changes were worsened by rising temperatures.(该项目的初步研究结果显示,大气中二氧化碳浓度的升高确实能促进作物生长得更快、植株更大,但这绝不意味着作物变得更健康。经过一段时间的生长后,这些作物体内的钙等关键矿物质以及某些抗氧化化合物的含量均出现了下降,而气温的持续升高则进一步加剧了这些变化)”可知,文章核心围绕气候变化(二氧化碳浓度升高、气温上升)展开,指出其虽能让作物长得更大更快,但会导致关键矿物质、抗氧化化合物等营养成分减少,形成“作物更大,营养更少”的现象。A项“更大的作物,更少的营养”能概括主旨,适合作为本文标题。故选A项。
D
With over 75% of professionals using AI in their daily work, writing and editing messages with AI tools have become a commonplace practice. While generative AI tools are seen to make writing easier, are they effective for communicating between managers and employees? A new study of 1,100 professionals reveals a critical paradox (悖论) in workplace communications: AI tools can make managers’ emails more professional, but regular use can destroy trust between them and their employees.
In the study, Coman, a researcher at the University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business, and his co-author, Peter Cardon, surveyed professionals about how they viewed emails that were written with low, medium and high AI assistance. Survey participants were asked to evaluate different AI-written versions of a congratulatory message on both their perception (感知) of the message content and their perception of the sender.
While AI-assisted writing was generally seen as efficient, effective, and professional, Coman and Cardon found a “perception gap” in messages that were written by managers versus those written by employees. While low levels of AI help, like grammar or editing, were generally acceptable, higher levels of assistance caused negative perceptions. The perception gap is especially significant when employees perceive higher levels of AI writing, bringing into questioning the authorship, honesty, caring and competency of their manager.
The impact on trust was significant: Only 40% to 52% of employees viewed managers as sincere when they used high levels of AI, compared to 83% for low-assistance messages. Similarly, while 95% found low-AI managers messages professional, this dropped to 69%-73% when managers relied heavily on AI tools.
The study suggests managers should carefully consider message type, level of AI assistance and relational context before using AI in their writing. While AI may be appropriate and professionally received for information or routine communications, relationship-oriented messages requiring empathy, praise, congratulations, motivation or personal feedback are better handled with minimal technological intervention.
12. What does the “critical paradox” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Employees accept AI tools but reject AI-generated messages.
B. AI-written emails are professional yet often contain factual errors.
C. AI improves efficiency but weakens authenticity in workplace relations.
D. Managers benefit from AI while employees suffer from heavier workloads.
13. What was a key feature of the study’s design?
A. It focused only on congratulatory message plots.
B. It compared perceptions of different AI assistance levels in emails.
C. It surveyed a large sample of 1100 professionals across industries.
D. It analyzed real AI-written emails from actual workplace communication.
14. Why might high AI assistance cause negative perceptions?
A. It is against company policies on technology use.
B. It reduces the personal touch that employees value most.
C. It raises doubts about managers’ competence and sincerity.
D. It makes messages overly complex and difficult to understand.
15. What attitude should managers adopt when using AI in their writing?
A. Appreciative. B. Cautious. C. Opposed. D. Indifferent.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. B

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The perception gap is especially significant when employees perceive higher levels of AI writing, bringing into questioning the authorship, honesty, caring and competency of their manager.(当员工察觉到邮件有较高水平的AI撰写痕迹时,这种感知差距尤为明显,这会让人质疑其管理者的作者身份、诚实度、关怀度和能力)”及第四段中的“Only 40% to 52% of employees viewed managers as sincere when they used high levels of AI, compared to 83% for low-assistance messages.(当管理者大量使用AI时,只有40%到52%的员工认为他们是真诚的,而使用低AI辅助的邮件这一比例为83%)”可知,高AI辅助引发负面感知是因为它让员工质疑管理者的能力和真诚度。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“The study suggests managers should carefully consider message type, level of AI assistance and relational context before using AI in their writing.(该研究建议管理者在使用AI写作之前,应仔细考虑信息类型、AI辅助水平和关系背景)”可知,管理者在使用AI写作时应采取谨慎的态度。故选B项。

If you have a great sense of humor, and you’re interested in writing, you may be wondering how to combine your talents. ____16____ Here are some ways to let your tales bring loud laughter to others.
Identify your style of humor. When you sit down to write a funny story, you need to be aware of your personal style of humor. If you’re trying to write in a style that doesn’t fit your strengths as a comedian or a storyteller, then your story may not be as strong as it could be. ____17____ Some of the most popular include observational humor, anecdotal (轶事的) humor, dark humor, and dry humor.
____18____ You need to have some idea about the story before you write it. It’s not enough to have jokes or a funny scenario. The story needs to be strong so that it can support the humorous elements.
Create a conflict and a tension. ____19____ Once you create your story’s conflict, tell your readers what’s at risk for your characters if they don’t resolve it. You should create a conflict and a tension that move your plot forward. If so, your readers will find the events of your story more interesting.
Choose a point of view. Choosing a story’s point of view requires you to decide who would tell the story best, and how that information should be delivered. The main options are the first person, the second person, and the third person. There is no objectively right or wrong choice. ____20____
A Decide what your story is about.
B. There are many different types of humor.
C. Write as many jokes as possible in the story.
D. The conflict and the tension usually make no difference.
E. Writing a funny story is not as difficult as you may think.
F. Ideally, your story’s conflict should explore human nature.
G. That’s because it all depends on what works best for your story.
【答案】16. E 17. B 18. A 19. F 20. G

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My teacher, Mr Larson, who lived just a few houses down the street, once told our class, “The strongest bridges are built with small kindnesses.” I didn’t fully understand that until the summer when I felt my world divided.
My parents were constantly busy with work. Dad, an architect, and Mom, a hospital administrator, didn’t have much time to keep me company. They often exchanged only brief, tired words over dinner. Our neighbor’s son, Jake, my lifelong playmate, had become distant since the last argument over a stupid rule in a soccer game. We used to play in his backyard together. But lately, we even barely said “hi” over the fence. I felt like a lonely island, stuck between my parents’ busy worlds and Jake’s new silence.
However, everything changed one rainy day. A fierce storm hit our street, and from my window, I saw Mr Larson, of all people, in front of Jake’s house. A fallen tree branch was blocking his car right there in the driveway. Without thinking, I ran out with my raincoat. Together, we dragged the heavy branch aside. Jake saw us from his window and emerged silently with two cups of hot coffee. The three of us stood under his porch (门廊) , in awkward silence for a while, listening to the rain.
“That old maple (枫树) in your yard would make a great tree house, you know,” Mr Larson said suddenly, looking at the big, ignored tree at Jake’s house. “I’ve got some spare wood from a small building I tore down. Do you want to build a tree house together? And I can help,” Mr Larson added. Jake and I nodded and exchanged a smile — the first-sincere one in months. Then we agreed to start a project together — building a tree house. It was a small moment, but the ice between us seemed to start melting.

By the end of the summer, the firm tree house was finally done.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The next weekend, the unexpected project began. Mr Larson brought plans and tools. Jake, shy at first, shared a toolbox he’d just got for his birthday. The noise drew my parents out. To my astonishment, Dad started advising on structural supports, and Mom brought lemonade and sandwiches for everyone. The hammering and laughter became our weekend ritual. We built more than a wooden platform in that tree; we built a new common ground. Jake smiled again. My parents talked and joked with Mr Larson like old friends. The tree house became our shared creation, a silent witness to mending bonds.
By the end of the summer, the firm tree house was finally done. Up there one weekend, Jake confessed he’d felt lonely and out of place since the last argument. “This,” he said, patting the wooden rail, “feels like a new beginning.” Below, I saw my parents holding hands, looking up at us with soft smiles. Mr Larson’s small act of kindness — offering wood and time — had indeed built a bridge. It connected my busy parents, my friend, and my isolated self, turning our separate struggles into a shared story of quiet healing, high up in the leaves. The tree house was our new common ground for play, for talks, and for understanding.

A
The Four Largest Marine protected areas
Founded in 2014 this vast sea park includes the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the barrier reef around the island of Grande-Terre in New Caledonia in the South Pacific.
2 What do the second and the third MPA have in common?
A. They include some islands. B. They are split into two parts.
C. They are known for volcanoes. D. They feature world heritage sites.
3. Which MPA is poorly managed?
A. The first one. B. The second one.
C. The third one. D. The fourth one.

C The healing effect of disorder.

The research is focused on popular leafy vegetables including kale, rocket and spinach.
D Climate change and its impact on crop nutrition.
9. What was the condition of the crops grown for this research project?
A. Thinner air. B. Controlled water.
C. Higher CO2 level. D. Lower temperature.
10. How does Ms. Ekele sound in the last paragraph?
A. Annoyed. B. Concerned. C. Satisfied. D. Confident.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Bigger crops, fewer nutrients B. Faster growth, richer minerals
C. Warmer climate, balanced crops D. Higher CO2, healthier vegetables

D. It makes messages overly complex and difficult to understand.
15. What attitude should managers adopt when using AI in their writing?
