And people celebrate over several days or even weeks. It is called the Spring Festival in China, Tet in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea. What are some traditions around the Lunar New Year? One well-known ancient story speaks of Nian, a terrible monster that eats human flesh on New Year's Day. But Nian fears the colour red, loud noises and fire. So, Lunar New Year activities include putting up red paper dragons on the doors of homes. People also burn red lanterns all night and set off firecrackers to chase away the monster. Red is considered a lucky colour to ring in a new year. People wear red clothing, decorate their homes with red paper lanterns and use red envelopes to present loved ones with gifts of money. Ancestor worship is also common during this time. Many Korean families take part in a ceremony called “charye”. Female family members prepare food and male members serve it to ancestors. The final act involves the entire family sharing a meal and asking for help from their ancestors. Vietnamese culture holds a similar tradition. How do diaspora (大移居) communities celebrate? Members of Asian American communities around the US also organize parades, parties and other events around the Lunar New Year. Lion and dragon dances are common, as are fireworks, traditional food and cultural performances. What are some special foods for the New Year? Each culture has its own special foods for New Year celebration. In Chinese culture, for example, “changshou mian” or “long-life noodles” are eaten with a wish for a long, healthy and happy life. Koreans celebrate with “tteokguk”, a soup that contains thinly sliced rice cakes. And Vietnamese culture has “banh chung”, a traditional dish made from rice, mung bean and pork belly. The dish is usually covered with banana leaves, shaped into a square and tied up with strings for steaming. 21. Which is NOT a way to drive away Nian? A. Setting off firecrackers. B. Burning red lanterns. C. Putting up red dragons. D. Making red envelopes. 22. In which country do people celebrate the Lunar New Year with “banh chung”? A. Korea. B. China. C. Vietnam. D. The US. 23. Where is the text probably taken from? A. A folk story. B. A magazine. C. A promotional brochure. D. A food promotion advertisement. B As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children. Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification. “Within 10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification. Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers (肥料) rather than chemicals. In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action, “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.” By September 2016, more than 130,000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant 1 million trees by 2028, In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the programme to Algeria and Morocco. 24. What fired Sarah Toumi’s passion to help others? A. Her experience in fighting against desertification. B. Her childhood living with her family in France. C. Her strong desire to become a leader to better the world. D. Her holiday trips to her father’s birthplace in Tunisia. 25. What is the main cause of desertification in Tunisia? A. The rising amount of rainfall. B. The severe shortage of water. C. The change of farming practices. D. The breakdown of rich farmers. 26. How did Sarah Toumi contribute to addressing desertification? A. By spreading the application of natural products and chemical fertilizers. B. By encouraging the farmers to plant traditional crops. C. By relocating the young from areas with no access to water to urban centres. D. By promoting sustainable farming practices and initiating tree-planting programme, 27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To introduce Sarah Toumi’s efforts to hold back the Sahara. B. To show the methods of protecting the plants in Africa. C. To call on people to fight poverty in North Africa. D. To stress the importance of extending the programme in Tunisia. C It was obvious with Pinocchio. Every time he told a lie his nose grew longer. But for the rest of us in real life, the result of telling lies isn’t so evident. Is it possible that there are unseen consequences to dishonesty? Since lies are carried by speech, and speech originates in the brain, is it possible that telling lies results in changes in the brain that are not outwardly observable? Psychologists Julia Lee and Ashley Hardin wanted to find out. Drs. Lee and Hardin set up a series of studies to explore the question of dishonesty, with 250 pairs of individuals. In each pair, one was assigned (分派) the task of either lying or telling the truth. The other member of the pair was instructed to evaluate the emotions of the lying or truth-telling partner. Each of the partners was then assigned the task of evaluating the emotions of the other partner. The research found that subjects who were asked to be dishonest were significantly worse at detecting the emotional state of their partners than those who told the truth. Surprisingly, the small, seemingly unimportant moments of dishonesty clouded an individual’s ability to read the emotions of another individual later on. To determine how well the participants could read other people’s emotions, the researchers then had the subjects watch a series of short video clips. In the clips, actors expressed a wide range of emotions in their facial expressions, voices, and body languages. The participants were then asked to identify the emotional state of the actors. Once again, across all the experimental studies, the researchers consistently found that those who were tempted to, and likely did lie, ended up performing worse on the test of empathetic accuracy than those who didn’t lie. We live in a world where businesses, social life, and personal relationships depend on the ability of individuals to interact well with other people. And to interact with them we often need to be able to determine their emotions. As most of us learned in kindergarten: it’s important to tell the truth! 28. What is the aim of the studies? A. To explore the motive for lying. B. To explain the Pinocchio Effect. C To test if lying causes brain changes. D. To teach people how to detect lies. 29. What does the underlined word “clouded” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Improved. B. Cleared. C. Monitored. D. Weakened. 30. What were the participants asked to do in the studies? A. To learn body languages. B. To make faces. C. To identify different emotions. D. To rate others’ performances. 31. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. The application of the study. B. The necessity of being honest. C. The complexity of social interaction. D. The reasons for telling lies. D When hunters wiped out most fruit eating birds in the tropical forest of Lambir Hills National Park by the 1990s, the skies grew duller — and in a few years so did the forest. Without birds to spread their seeds, the diversity of fruit-producing plants dropped, showing the critical importance of seed dispersal (分散传播) for ecosystem health. The movement of seeds across the landscape in animals’ guts (肠道) is a “glue that keeps ecological communities together,” says Jordi Bascompte, an ecologist at the University of Zurich. However, a team states that at least one-third of European plant species could be in trouble because more than one-third of seed-dispersing animal species are ranked as threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) or are decreasing in numbers, which could harm the ability of plants to expand their range to deal with climate change or recover after wildfire. For example, the garden warbler, a common migratory bird that spreads the seeds of60 plant species, is decreasing across Europe. Although the study does not detail how the crisis is affecting ecosystems in that IUCN assessments haven’t yet been conducted for 67% of the plant species, researchers did find that more than 60% of the plants had five or fewer animals that eat and spread their seeds, which could make them particularly sensitive to the decrease or disappearance of any of these critical seed dispersers. And some plants do seem to be in big trouble. The authors came up with a list of nearly 80 “very high concern” interactions, in which both the plant and the animal are threatened or decreasing. “We need to make sure we’re looking after the dispersers that are doing a lot of the work,” Andy says. “Despite the massive data set, much remains unknown about the extent of the problem. It’s a mystery which animals move the seeds of some rare plants, for instance — in spite of centuries of natural history observations in Europe.” Even for common, well-studied species, it’s not always obvious which dispersers are most important and whether other species might take over if they were to decrease or disappear. There are some similar cases on other continents, too, including North America. But the picture there is even less clear. 32. What can be inferred from Jordi Bascompte’s words? A. The spread of seeds plays a vital role in ecosystem health. B. All seeds rely on animals’ guts to get dispersed. C. The movement of animals is more important than that of seeds for ecological balance. D. Animals carry the seeds to keep ecological communities together. 33. Which of the following techniques is NOT used to make the article more persuasive? A. Listing numbers. B. Making comparisons. C. Quoting views. D. Giving examples. 34. Which opinion will Andy agree with? A. European scientists have done a great job for centuries. B. What matters most is to find out all the dispersers. C. Dispersers need a large amount of work to be looked after well. D It is still unknown which dispersers certain plants are missing. 35. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Seed Disperser Decreases Threaten Europe’s Plants B. Some Plants Are Facing the Danger of Dying Out C. Ecosystem Health Relies on Seed Dispersers in Many Aspects D. Dispersing Animal Species Are ranked as Threatened 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Keeping Parents Entertained while Camping Camping is a great way to spend family time. I would be all alone at school. I lost all my friends.” Eby’s world was unraveling(崩塌) — but the loss of her friends was only part of the story. A few days later, she broke down in tears while in class, and her teacher, Mrs. Welch, who always had a nice, friendly attitude towards every student, pulled her into the teachers’ office to find out what was wrong. “And I told her about the girls. But then I told her the rest of the story,” Eby said. “And the rest of the story was, a few months prior to this happening, my mum and my stepdad decided my big brother—my anchor(支柱) in life—needed to go to live with my dad. So, overnight they took him and they dropped him off with my dad. So I woke up one morning and my brother was gone.” Not long after, her stepdad left too. So, when the girls at school decided they weren’t going to be friends with her anymore, it was just the latest example of the people she cared about leaving without warning. She couldn’t believe everything that happened. She felt that the whole world had cheated her, and she asked herself why she had to bear so much misfortune. “It felt like everywhere I turned, people I loved disappeared,” Eby said. “They stopped loving me and they didn’t tell me why and I had no control over it.” 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Eby cried as she told the whole story to Mrs. Welch. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Around 2002, when Eby began to teach writing to college students, she realized Mrs. Welch’s small act of caring had left a lasting mark. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 府谷中学2025~2026学年第一学期高二年级期末检测 英语 (试卷满分:150分,考试时间:120分钟) 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? My work shows a beautiful scene: there are lush green parks everywhere in the city. Small lakes sparkle in the sun, with ducks swimming happily. People walk on tree-lined paths, some chatting and some taking photos. What’s more, tall buildings stand harmoniously with the green spaces, and solar panels are installed on many roofs. I created this painting because our city has been working hard to build a park city. Besides, I want to show how wonderful it is when nature and urban life blend well. Yours, Li Hua 第二节(满分25分) 【67题答案】 【答案】例文 Eby cried as she told the whole story to Mrs. Welch. Mrs. Welch listened patiently, her eyes full of sympathy. Then she gave Eby a warm hug and said softly, “Tanya, I know it’s hard for you now, but these difficulties won’t last forever. Don’t let others’ decisions or the sudden changes in life defeat you. Try to find new friends who will cherish you, and also, focus on your studies. You have the power to make your world better.” These words were like a ray of sunshine, warming Eby’s broken heart and giving her the courage to face the future. Around 2002, when Eby began to teach writing to college students, she realized Mrs. Welch’s small act of caring had left a lasting mark. She started to pay close attention to her students’ emotional needs. Whenever a student was in trouble, she would talk to them patiently, just like Mrs. Welch had done to her.
