Sometimes, good advice takes time to sink in. When I first read Thoreau’s Walden, I was attracted by his call to simplify our lives. Nevertheless, I ignored his advice for forty years and enjoyed my life with possessions. But one morning, an incident occurred that illustrated the wisdom of Thoreau’s advice and changed my life.
It was January 13, a bright Sunday morning at my home in Minnesota. My challenge was to remove twelve inches of snow from my driveway before my favorite soccer game began. Whenever I tried to blow the snow out of my driveway, my snowblower ran just seconds before it stopped. So I had to wheel the machine back into the garage to check and repair. Meanwhile, my neighbor smiled and waved as he finished clearing the snow using his snowblower.
I abandoned the snowblower and seized a shovel, clearing a path through the driveway wide enough in fifteen minutes. After watching the game, I took apart the snowblower and dropped the pieces into a large trash can, feeling a rush of freedom. Now, no more trips to the gas station, and no more oil changes or breakdowns.
I shared my insight with my wife Carolyn, who was supportive. Whenever it snowed heavily, we skipped working out at the gym and shoveled the driveway together. The task never took more than thirty minutes and was followed by a celebratory cup of hot chocolate. A new winter tradition was born.
Following Thoreau’s advice to simplify life, I made a system for sorting through my possessions to decide what to keep, sell, donate, or desert and encouraged Carolyn to join me in my effort. By the time we retired, we moved to a retirement community with a small rental truck, saving thousands of dollars.
In retirement, we continue to enjoy the benefits of owning no more than we need. The less we own, the less we have to take care of, and the more time we have to pursue activities that bring us joy: biking, hiking, reading, and travelling. We are glad we took Thoreau’s advice.
24. How did the author react to Thoreau’s advice at first?
A. He ignored it and kept his habits. B. He advocated the lifestyle to his friends.
C. He abandoned his private possessions. D. He made improvements according to it.
25. What did the author plan to do after clearing the snow?
A. Drive to the local gym for sports. B. Read Thoreau’s book for advice.
C. Enjoy his favorite sports program. D. Take the snowblower to the gas station.
26. What was the author’s new family tradition?
A. Sorting through the possessions to make donations.
B. Celebrating their physical work with hot chocolate.
C. Doing the repairs of their possessions by themselves.
D. Getting people in the neighborhood to clear the snow.
27. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A Good advice takes little time to be absorbed.
B. Simplicity makes room for more joy in life.
C. Owning more than enough brings us benefits.
D. Exchanging our possessions boosts happiness.
C
Self-confidence is trusting in our abilities or qualities. It’s usually seen as a good thing. But is it possible that we might benefit from a little less confidence in our beliefs?
For many years, Dr. Mark Leary, a scientist, has studied the role of people’s beliefs in their behavior. He found overconfidence is very common, especially when it comes to what people believe to be true, and can lead us to disastrous decisions. In 1986, NASA believed that the risk of loss for any space flight was roughly 1 in 100, 000. It was an overconfident belief and might have led to the explosion of the Challenger. The good news is that there’s a “vaccine (疫苗) ” for overconfidence, and that’s what scientists call “intellectual humility”— recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong.
A survey of 144 college students to measure their intellectual humility found that students who saw their thinking could be wrong tended to be more curious and more likely to seek out new knowledge. They ended up knowing more at the end of the day. But does it actually help you beyond that?
To find out more, Dr. Tenelle Porter conducted a series of studies with high school students. She found that students with intellectual humility were much more likely to test themselves to see whether they really understood the material and seek out potential holes in their understanding. When they got test scores, they’d change their study strategies to improve their performance and master the material for the next test.
Students who didn’t see their knowledge could be wrong might instead just sail through their studying and wouldn’t stop to ask themselves if they truly understood what they read, heard, or did. Such students thought they got a subject down pat, but when asked to explain it on a test, they found they didn’t actually understand as much as they had thought.
Although it might be good for you, researchers recognize that questioning your beliefs can be truly hard. Still, it’s important to remember that questioning beliefs isn’t always about replacing old ones with new ones. If you find it hard to question a belief, try taking “baby steps”.
28. Why does the author mention the explosion of the Challenger?
A. To express his sorrow for the loss. B. To stress the high risk of space flights.
C. To show the result of wrong operation. D. To give an example of overconfidence.
29. What do we know about intellectual humility?
A. It urged students to gain recognition. B. It encouraged students to take exams.
C. It helped students to adjust learning methods. D. It motivated students to memorize knowledge.
30. What do the underlined words “got a subject down pat” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Fully mastered a subject. B. Put great effort into a subject.
C. Really enjoyed a subject. D. Benefited a lot from a subject.
31. What will probably be discussed in the following paragraphs?
A Why questioning our beliefs is hard. B. Why intellectual humility is helpful.
C. How to become a confident person. D. How to practice intellectual humility.
D
Using drone (无人机) surveys and artificial-intelligence processing, scientists have discovered an extensive network of open clearings among the trees in Congo’s rainforests. Elephants, gorillas, and other animals visit these muddy clearings, called bais, for vital nutrition and maintain their social networks.
Recognizing the surprising extent of the bais network began on the ground. In May 2021, a small team of researchers went through the rainforest at Odzala-Kokoua National Park in Congo. Evan Hockridge, then a graduate student, was with Ngouma, planning to study forest animal behavior. “It hit me when I was there. You can’t understand animal interactions without first understanding bais,” he says.
For the next three summers Hockridge and his colleagues investigated the clearings. “There’s something magical in watching a family of animals emerge from the forest edge and enjoy sunlight and social opportunities before slipping back into the cool shade of the forest,” he says.
During the initial surveys, the team often followed elephant trails through the rainforest from bais to bais, which led Hockridge to wonder about a network. Although previous studies documented animal behavior in selected bais, no one had counted them or mapped their distribution. Doing so required taking to the sky. Partnering with African Parks, which manages Odzala, the team flew drones over some of the 220 bais, gathering information. The researchers used this information to train an AI model that could pick out bais from satellite images. For a study, Hockridge and Ngouma mapped all the bais in a national park and found 2,176 of them — 10 times more than the park management had previously known.
Bais, always located near rivers or streams, are islands of resources, and animals produce trails to essentially navigate to and from the bais. The researchers’ map of bais is also a map of conservation priorities, since a huge portion of the animal community depends on this unique ecosystem.
No one has ever documented how bais formed. Now, with a map and camera traps, the research team is going to track long-term changes, meaning to maintain these crucial animal habitats.
32. What can we know about bais?
A. They help keep balance of species. B. They’re good for Congo’s rainforests.
C. They’re animal socializing places. D. They’re examples of wildlife protection.
33. What can the information gathered by drones be used for?
A. Identifying animal diversity of the forest. B. Locating elephant trails in the rainforest.
C. Analyzing the clearings from the images. D. Coaching an AI model to distinguish clearings.
34. What’s the next step of the research team?
A. Sorting out the trails between the bais. B. Tracing the historic development of bais.
C. Monitoring and keeping the unique ecosystem. D. Recording the form process of the habitats.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Hidden Animals’ Playgrounds Were Revealed. B. AI Model Can Identify Rainforest Components.
C. Rainforest Playgrounds Come under Protection. D. Animals Need Common Places for Interaction.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I never imagined that a single piece of paper could change my entire perspective on life. I was a librarian, a job that had defined my existence for over two decades. My days were spent among the quiet rows of books. I knew every corner of the library, every title on the shelves, and yet, I felt as if my own life was missing a chapter.
It was a typical Tuesday morning. I was sorting through a box of old donations, preparing to catalog some rare books, when I found a small, yellowed envelope between the pages of an ancient journal. It had no address, no stamp, and no indication of its origin. Curious, I carefully opened it.
The handwriting was elegant but faded, the ink barely visible against the paper. The letter read,
“Dear Stranger,
If you are reading this, know that you are not alone. Life has a way of making us feel isolated, as if our stories are insignificant. But every life matters. Every story is important. I hope the letter finds someone who needs to hear these words.
You are stronger than you think. You have the power to change your world, one small act at a time. Don’t be afraid to take risks, to follow your dreams, and to embrace the unknown. The greatest journeys begin with a single step.
With hope,
A Friend”
I read the letter over and over, feeling a strange mix of emotions. The words resonated deeply within me, as if they were written specifically for me. I had always been content with my life, but lately, I felt a growing sense of restlessness. The library was my sanctuary (庇护所), but it had also become my prison. I had lost sight of my own dreams, my own story.
That evening, as I closed the library, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the letter was a sign. I had always been cautious, preferring the safety of routine to the uncertainty of change. But the letter reminded me that life was meant to be lived, not just observed.

I suggested reaching out to schools, nursing homes, and shelters - places where people might need a little bit of hope and connection. The director’s expression softened, and she nodded thoughtfully. “That’s a wonderful idea,” she agreed. With her support, I threw myself into the project. After hours of planning, contacting local organizations, and gathering resources, I enlisted the help of a few enthusiastic volunteers. The preparation work went smoothly.
Weeks later, the moveable library program started, bringing libraries to different communities. The first stop was a local elementary school, where we set up a reading corner in the library, equipped with colorful books and cozy seats. As I read aloud to a group of wide-eyed children, I saw their faces light up with wonder. For a moment, I forgot about my own doubts and fears. I was reminded of the joy that books could bring, and the importance of sharing that joy with others. The following months witnessed our library touched the lives of countless people in diverse places ranging from nursing homes, orphanages to hospitals. Each visit was a reminder of the letter’s words: “You have the power to change your world, one small act at a time.”
