Nature is more than beautiful for one to look at.
For Indonesian nature conservationist (环保主义者) Farwiza Farhan, nature is a silent friend. As a child, Farhan often climbed trees whenever she had problems, staying there until she calmed down. Nature has always been there for her. This is why she has been trying to be there for nature when it needs her help.
Farhan brought her love for nature to her college years. She took a master’s degree in environmental management at the University of Queensland in Australia. In 2009, while studying at the university, she had an opportunity to work with Carbon Capture and Storage Institute, an international think tank that focused on carbon capture and storage to cut down emissions (排放), and earned some money. In 2012, along with several of her coworkers, she formed the Forest, Nature, and Environment of Ace h Foundation (HAkA).
In 2014, HAkA achieved one huge victory. making an oil company pay $30 million for the damage it caused to the ecosystem. Farhan said this landmark victory was historic because it was the first time that Indonesia had fined a company for burning forests. Besides, HAkA also stopped the construction of a dam that put an elephant habitat in Indonesia at risk. HAkA, now a 12-year-old institution, also has programs for women such as assistant lawyer and citizen journalism training and forest guard groups.
Farhan said they saw a need to empower women as protectors of the environment because women are much more affected by the effects of environmental destruction and climate change. The conservationist said disasters such as crop failures could affect the financial status (财政状况) of families, making it more likely for them to force women to be in arranged marriages to get out of poverty or relocate to areas full of violence.
Farhan has won several awards and she commented, “The work should include everyone from all walks of life. The recognition belongs to all fighting on the ground.”
4. What did nature mean to young Farhan?
A. A mother of all things. B. A shelter for wildlife.
C. A magical theme park. D. A comforting partner.
5. What drove Farhan to start HAkA?
A. Her working pressure. B. Her economic condition.
C. Her program in university. D. Her passion from childhood.
6. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about concerning HAkA?
A. Its strict standards. B. Its business model.
C. Its major successes. D. Its running system.
7. Why did Farhan call on women to be environmental fighters?
A. They are more subject to eco-crisis. B. Their hope for better jobs disappears.
C. They are loaded with family duties. D. Their life is threatened by violence.

A Japanese city is using AI (人工智能) to help with the problem of kids not wanting to go to school. They look at students’ information to see who might stop coming because of worries, being bullied (欺凌), or other problems.
In a city near Tokyo, they tested an Al system for a year. They wanted to help teachers find students who are having a hard time. In Japan, more and more kids are not going to school for a long time. In 2022, almost 300,000 kids didn’t go to school for 30 days or more.
The AI system looks at things like how often kids go to school, how well they do in school, and if they are healthy. It also looks at if they visit the school nurse a lot or if there are reports about them being bullied.
The system then uses past data (数据) to see how likely it is that a student will stop going to school. It gives each student a color, from red (highest risk) to yellow (lowest risk).
In the test, the program said 1,193 students were at high risk. Teachers decided that 265 of them needed help right away.
To keep kids’ information safe, the city made rules about how to use the data and not to treat students unfairly because of the AI’s predictions (预测). They also told parents they could say no to using their kids’ data. Only important people in the school, like headmasters, could see the results.
“By using real information, we might be able to stop kids from not wanting to go to school,” said Makiko Nakamuro, a professor from Keio University and an expert on education. “But we have to think really hard about keeping their data safe by telling them clearly why and how we use their information,” she also said.
8. What is the main purpose of using AI in the Japanese city?
A. To improve students’ scores.
B. To study students’ health conditions.
C. To make bullying problems happen less in schools.
D. To find students at risk of not attending school.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The job of school nurses. B. How the AI system checks kids’ health.
C. The main focus of the AI system. D. Why students need better education.
10. How did the city protect students’ information?
A. Make strict rules about data using. B. Hide all the data after testing.
C. Give up using their real information. D. Send the result only to their parents.
11. What is Makiko Nakamuro’s attitude towards the AI system?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Anxious. D. Confused.

Brian Snow, who is a Canadian, had a special Christmas. He gave up hours of holiday fun with his family to help 75 trapped strangers.
High winds changed an airline on Dec.25, a flight intended for St. John’s, Newfoundland. And the passengers finally arrived at Deer Lake on the other side of the island province.
Local resident Brian Snow was friends with one of the passengers. And he realized that due to the national holiday, all the restaurants and shops in town were closed. On top of that, the hotel where almost 80 people had been dropped off had no restaurant. Mr. Snow posted a call to action on social media: “Let’s show the true Christmas spirit.”
Within an hour, the Facebook post was shared 60 times and the community had voluntarily organized a delightful meal in the hotel lobby. Residents brought the passengers sandwiches, their own turkey dinner leftovers, freshly baked bread, and, of course, lots of cookies and desserts.
However, the kindness from the Deer Lake community didn’t end at the dinner table. Dave Power, a passenger who was flying with his wife, said, “When we finished eating, my wife and I got our bags and came out to the front of the hotel, only to find a long line of cars.” Thanks to them, each passenger came back to the airport smoothly. “It was truly a ‘Come from Away Christmas’,” said Dave’s brother Robert Power on Facebook.
This selfless devotion reminds us of a quite analogous story that happened in 2001, when townspeople came together to welcome thousands of passengers on planes because of the Sept. 11 attacks in the US. The Tony Award-winning musical Come From Away got inspiration from the kindness of these people. It details the efforts of community members who took care of the thousands of travelers for several days.
12. According to the text, the passengers on the plane ______.
A. came from the same community B. rushed into shops for holiday food
C. were stuck at Deer Lake due to bad weather D. came to Deer Lake to celebrate Christmas
13. What can we learn about Mr. Snow?
A. His post online received positive reactions quickly.
B. He seldom spent Christmas Day with his family.
C. He once worked in the local aircraft company.
D. His friend came to Deer Lake to visit him.
14. What does the underlined word “analogous” in the last paragraph mean?
A. strange. B. terrible. C. funny. D. similar.
15. What does the author want to express by mentioning the story happening in 2001?
A. To praise the kindness from strangers.
B. To honor the customs of the Deer Lake community.
C. To show the importance of preparing for disasters.
D. To stress the great influence of social media.

They were no longer as comfortable as they should be, and David could tell that George needed a new pair of shoes and he decided to do something special for his friend on his birthday.
David’s thoughtful plan started with a conversation with his mum. He explained how much he cared for his friend George and how he wanted to gift him a pair of shoes for his birthday.
His mum, a kind and wise woman, agreed that it was a wonderful idea. She also wanted to teach David an important lesson about earning and giving.

David and George were best friends at school. They sat together in the same school classroom, shared sandwiches during lunch breaks, and had countless adventures together,
As George’s birthday approached, David noticed something that concerned him. It was George’s shoes, the soles (鞋底) of which were nearly worn through.
So, they discussed a plan together. “David,” his mum said, “I think it’s a lovely idea to buy shoes for George. But how about this? I can give you some money for doing extra housework around the house. You can earn the money you need to buy the shoes. What do you think? “David’s eyes lit up, and he smiled widely. “That’s a great idea, Mum! I want to do it. ”
David became a whirlwind (旋风) of activity around the house. He swept the floor, watered the plants, washed the clothes, and even helped his mum with the dishes. His determination to earn enough money for George’s gift shone through his every action.
As days turned into weeks, David saved penny by penny. His mum was impressed by his hard work. She knew that her son’s surprise for George would not only make his friend happy but would also teach David the joy of giving.

Finally, George’s birthday came and David invited George to his home for a celebration. David led George to the living room. “George,” David said, “I have a surprise for you.” George was a little confused. David took out a present wrapped in shiny paper. He handed it to George, saying, “Happy Birthday, my friend!” George was filled with curiosity as he carefully unwrapped the gift. The surprise and happiness on his face were evident as he saw the new pair of shoes. David explained, “I wanted to get you something special for your birthday, and I saved up money to buy these shoes for you.”
George was so moved by the gift he received. He couldn’t imagine how long it took David to save the money to buy the gift. His eyes were filled with excited tears, and he gave David a big hug, “You’re an angel, David! Thanks!” David was also so happy that George liked the gift. For George, the shoes David had given him weren’t just a pair of shoes; they were a symbol of their friendship. The two friends shared a heart-warming moment, and their friendship grew even stronger. They knew that the joy of giving and the warmth of true friendship were the best gifts of all.
