My name is Tom. Pete is my good friend. Last Saturday I visited his new home. The new home is very big. In the past, Pete often spent his holidays traveling around the world. Now he loves to spend his holidays making his house look more beautiful. As he showed me the new kitchen he put together by himself, I asked Pete how he made it. He told me that a DIY program on TV helped a lot. Many programs show how important our houses are to us. But I read a report that said over two thousand people were hurt while doing DIY in this city in just one year. So we must be careful with DIY.

How do you turn on your bedroom lights? First, your brain decides to do it. Then, you use your arms, hands, and other body parts to do the action. Finally, the lights turn on. But in the future, things may be different. We’ll have BCI—short for brain-computer interface (脑机接口). With this technology, a computer can understand that you want to turn on the lights and control the lights directly for you.
How does BCI know your thoughts? Your brain is made of billions of tiny cells (细胞). These cells “talk” to each other with special signals. When these signals move around, information travels fast between your brain and the rest of your body. The earliest BCI systems helped people with locked-in syndrome (闭锁综合征). These people can’t control their muscles (肌肉) anymore, so they can’t move or speak, and may only be able to blink or move their eyes.
In recent years, BCI has helped more people. Now it’s used to drive wheelchairs (轮椅), control prosthetic limbs (义肢), and even make playing games more fun. In the coming years, BCI may become part of our daily life. Want to turn on the bedroom lights? Soon, you might just need to think about it!
49.Who did the earliest BCI systems help?
A.People who need new tiny cells. B.People who have locked-in syndrome.
C.People who can’t drive their own cars. D.People who like playing computer games.
50.What can BCI help control now?
A.Muscles in the body. B.Bedroom lights only.
C.Computers and phones. D.Wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs.
51.What can we guess about BCI in the future?
A.It will disappear soon. B.It will be more useful in daily life.
C.It will only help the disabled people. D.It will replace computers completely.
52.In which part of the newspaper can you probably find this text?
A.Science. B.Travel. C.Sports. D.Music.

“Click, click, click…” The drummer hit the drumsticks against each other to give a beat, and the band started to play. Kai played a guqin solo, and for most of the show, he played along with the rhythm of the drums. The band played faster and faster. Kai’s classmates jumped to their feet, clapping and screaming. When the music ended, there was an embarrassing silence. They all looked at the teachers.
Mr. Li asked, “What were you trying to express?”
Kai murmured, “I wanted to do something different...to modernize the guqin’s sound.”
“Well, it’s a good try. But you know it has over 3,000 years of history. I don’t think you’ve presented the characteristics well,” said Mr. Li. “The music was...We could hardly hear the guqin,” added Miss Zhou. “I’m afraid I can’t give you high marks.”
“Please, can I have another chance?” begged Kai.
They finally agreed.
Alone in the hall later, Kai sat in his chair, feeling a little sad. “I understand what you were trying to do.” Kai looked up and saw Miss Zhou by his side. “But before you can break the rules, you have to master them.”
Kai was puzzled. What did she mean?
“The guqin is connected to nature. The bottom board represents the ground, and the rounded top board represents the sky. A wonderful guqin performance shows the harmony (和谐) between people and nature.”
“Miss Zhou, is it fine to play the guqin with other instruments?”
“Because it is so quiet,” replied Miss Zhou, “it’s usually played alone. Sometimes, it can be played with the dizi or another guqin. Every note matters. And you know, there’s Chinese philosophy (哲理) behind every form of art. That’s what makes Chinese art special. We should try hard to keep the value of traditions and connect them with modern life.”
“Is it true that Confucius played the guqin?”
“Exactly. Confucius believed that music was important for a well-rounded education. It could help a person develop his inner self.”
“Can I make it modern?” Kai was wondering if he had asked a stupid question.
“Ancient musicians followed traditions to show respect. To modernize it, try to find the right way to keep the value. How will you change your piece?”
“I’m not sure yet,” said Kai. “But I’m going to do something different again.”
That night, Kai kept thinking about the next show. “How can I present the guqin and balance the traditional spirit with a modern touch?” he wondered.

AI is getting more and more useful in health checks. Next time you have an eye or breast scan (扫描检查), an AI tool may help the doctors. Many studies show these tools can help doctors do their work better. But new research says this may bring a problem.
A few years ago, four hospitals in Poland began to use an AI system during colonoscopies (结肠镜检查). The AI watches the video from inside the colon (结肠) at once. If it sees something strange, a green box shows up to tell the doctor.
The hospitals wanted to know if (是否) the AI worked well. They found it did. But when researchers studied further, they saw another thing. After doctors used AI for three months, they found fewer possible polyps (息肉) when the AI was turned off. The number went down from 28.4% to 22.4%. The doctors seemed to depend on the AI very quickly.
Dr. Robert Wachter from the University of California, San Francisco asks: “So what? Is that really a problem?” He says new technology often takes the place of old skills. For example, doctors today usually use a stethoscope (听诊器) to check a patient’s heart and lungs. But in the 1700s, doctors could do it without one.
But AI is not the same as a stethoscope. AI learns from old data. When the world changes, AI can change too. Sometimes, things like different lights can make AI less right. So now it’s necessary (有必要的) for people to discuss (讨论) how to use AI well in health checks.
57.What happens when the AI finds something strange during a colonoscopy?
A.A red light turns on.
B.A loud sound rings.
C.A green box shows up to tell the doctor.
D.The system takes out the polyp by itself.
58.What happened to the doctors after using AI for three months?
A.They depended on AI very quickly.
B.They were better at finding polyps without AI.
C.They stopped using AI because it was not helpful.
D.They made a new AI system by themselves.
59.How is the passage put together?
A.Past→Now→Future. B.Problem→Reason→Ways.
C.Idea→Example→Discussion. D.Opinion→Reason→Result.
60.Why is AI different from a stethoscope?
A.AI is cheaper to use.
B.AI is used only in big hospitals.
C.AI may change because of data and light conditions.
D.AI is only used in colonoscopies, not for hearts.
【答案】57.C 58.A 59.C 60.C

Drum
Guqin
Dizi

Last week, our school held “Memory Challenge Week”, an activity to help students improve their memory skills. Many students took part and learned useful methods.
First, we learned about flashcards. Teachers showed us how to write keywords on one side and meanings on the other. We made our own flashcards for English and science. Second, we practiced mind mapping. We drew central topics and connected related ideas with branches. This helped us see links between different points. Third, we tried memory games like “Word chains” and “Number Recall”. Everyone enjoyed playing while training their brains.
The most popular activity was the “Ebbinghaus Review Plan”. We learned that reviewing within 9 hours after learning helps stop forgetting. Many students made their own review schedules. We also invited a memory expert to give a talk. He said, “Memory is like a muscle (肌肉)—the more you train it, the stronger it gets.”
Through posters and class sharing, everyone understood that good memory habits can make learning easier. Our teacher said, “If you use these methods every day, you will remember more and forget less.”
86.What was the name of the school activity?
87.What did students write on flashcards?
88.Which activity was the most popular?
89.When should we review to stop forgetting?
90.Who compared memory to a muscle?
