Hello, I’m Cindy. Every summer, my parents, my little sister and I go to my grandpa’s old farmhouse. Grandpa was born here. He says when he was a kid, many farmers lived near this house. But there aren’t so many now.
Mum likes to grow vegetables, so grandpa turns the soil (土) before we get there. In late May, we plant onions, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, beans and corn. By June’s end, weeds (杂草) grow everywhere, so we have a lot of work to do.
Onions grow first. By the middle of July, we get a lot of them! We eat them in salad and egg sandwiches, and give a lot to others. But where are our carrots and tomatoes? Grandpa says grasshoppers (蚂蚱) eat them! But the beans are safe.

Students have 10-minute breaks between classes. They can exercise, talk with each other and relax at this time. But to keep students safe, some schools don’t let students leave their classrooms during breaks—unless (除非) they need to go to the bathroom.
Ding Ding is a student from a middle school in Beijing. He and his classmates can go out to the bathroom, get a drink of water, or play in the classroom. But they can’t run or make a loud noise during breaks. “School life becomes really hard.” Says Ding Ding.
Years ago, the Ministry of Education (教育部) told schools to make sure students have 10-minute breaks between classes. Besides that, schools should also let students have a 30-minute break every day for exercise.
“A rest between classes is important for students. It can help them relax, stay healthy and stop nearsightedness (近视),” an officer from the ministry says.
Many schools in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou have prepared fun activities for students to relax during the 10-minute break. Some schools have even made the breaks longer, to 20 minutes.

Students have 10-minute breaks between classes. They can exercise, talk with each other and relax at this time. But to keep students safe, some schools don’t let students leave their classrooms during breaks—unless (除非) they need to go to the bathroom.
