He took the trees to his boss excitedly. “Well done,” his boss said, “Keep going.” Happy to hear that, the woodcutter worked even harder the next day, but cut down fifteen trees. On the third day, he tried the hardest but cut down only ten trees. Day after day, he cut down fewer and fewer trees. “I must be too tired,” the woodcutter thought. He went to his boss and said that he could not do the job anymore. “When was the last time you sharpened (磨) your axe?” his boss asked. “Sharpen? I have no time to sharpen my axe. I kept trying to cut down trees.” “That’s the problem.” the boss said. Life can be like that. There’s nothing wrong with being active and hardworking. Let’s take a look at four different types (类型) of questions you can use in a conversation. Type①: The Open-ended Question An open-ended question is a question that cannot be answered with “yes” or “no”. The opposite is a close-ended question. Close-ended questions end the conversation. An open-ended question allows you to learn more about the other person and gives you something to reply to. Type②: The Follow-up Question When it comes to conversations, a follow-up question is something that is asked based on what the other person already said. In order to ask a good follow-up question, you need to listen carefully. Follow-up questions keep the conversation moving and show the other person you were listening to what they said. Type③:The Clarifying (澄清) Question When do you need to ask a clarifying question? There are two situations. First, that is when the information you heard was unclear. And second, that is when you are having trouble understanding what the speaker is trying to communicate. A clarifying question can be open-ended or close-ended. Type④: The Superlative (最高级) Question Questions, like “What is the best trip you’ve ever taken?” or “What’s your most unforgettable thing?” really let you learn more about the person you’re having a conversation with. 32 What do you need to do to ask a good follow-up question? A. Add our own ideas. B. Listen to the speaker carefully. C. Answer an open-ended question. D. Keep the conversation moving. 33. When do you need to ask a clarifying question? A. When the information is very clear. B. When we are trying to start talking. C. When we want to reply to a close-ended question. D. When we have trouble understanding the speaker. 34. Why does the writer use the sentence “What is the best trip you’ve ever taken?”? A. To find an answer. B. To give an example. C. To create an interest. D. To start a conversation. 35. What is the writer trying to do in the text? A. Teach us some useful sentences. B. Introduce some school rules. C. Guide us how to ask questions. D. Explain how to make friends. D “When I was at primary school, I put my shoes on the wrong feet. I didn’t notice but my friends did. ”—Max, aged 13. “I said to a friend that my teacher looked like a lion with her new hairstyle, and then realized the ‘lion’ was right behind me. ”—Ella, aged 12. Have you ever experienced such moments? Embarrassment is a feeling that can make you laugh, cry or want to hide forever. Falling over in a shop or accidentally calling your teacher “Mum” might feel like the end of the world. But not everyone thinks it’s a big deal. What feels terrible to one person might be easily laughed off by another. Whatever you are feeling embarrassed about, remember that it’s natural to feel this way. Scientists believe embarrassment is a way of teaching us not to repeat mistakes. You feel embarrassed because you care too much about what other people think of you. Even if you think everyone saw you with cream on your face studies show that fewer people notice than you think. Embarrassment can’t be avoided in our life, so why not learn some tips for dealing with it? Try making a joke out of it. For example, you are listening to music so carefully that you walk into a wall. What will you do? Say like “The wall is truly harder than my head!” Laughter can show people that there’s nothing to worry about. Talk to a person you trust. Sometimes embarrassment can stop you trying new things. If this happens, it’s better to share your feelings with a person you trust. ▲ Sometimes we’re embarrassed when we do something wrong to others. In that case, try saying how sorry you are and that you regret what happened. Facing the mistakes bravely is the first step in moving on. 36. How does the writer start the text? A. By giving advice. B. By listing numbers. C. By sharing experiences. D. By showing opinions. 37. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text? A. Ella laughed at her teacher because her hair was untidy. B. Sometimes embarrassment can make us laugh C. Feeling embarrassed is something that is normal. D. Sometimes making a joke is a useful way to deal with embarrassment. 38. According to the text, what is the influence of embarrassment? ①It can always make us laugh. ②It may make us do something wrong to others. ③It can teach us not to repeat mistakes. ④It may stop us from trying new things.
