We have for a long time known of the dangers of global warming, but sadly, little action has been taken to respond to IT. However, we have listening to our children campaigning all across the world, and we have chosen to listen to them and make hard choices. We have set a date of twenty twenty five for petrol based cars to stop production. In addition, our governments will bring in a vehicle exchange system. IT will allow drivers to trade in their car for electric model at no additional cost. We see this as an urgent action that needs to be taken. We cannot put profits ahead of the health of our planet for too long. The industries that pollute the most have dragged their heels. Well, no more. In addition, we will also be banning all plastic bottles by twenty thirty. Unless producers can find a way to make plastic breakdown, we would suggest to return to glass bottles, they can easily be reused and recycled with no harm to the environment. Leaving his smartphone and computer at home, a doctoral student rediscovers the pleasures of navigating life offline.
It may sound hard to believe in this digital age but Yang Hao, a 32-year-old doctoral student studying in the United Kingdom, set about a solo trip the old-fashioned way last year, using a printed map, paying for everything using cash or a bank card, reading train timetables, and talking to strangers.
Over the course of 134 days, he visited 68 counties and cities in 24 provinces and regions across China, read 40 books, documented his experiences, and used two cameras to record what he saw. “I realized that those 134 days were the most fulfilling, focused and productive period of my life. It was an experience of absolute concentration,” says Yang, who was born in Taiyuan in Shanxi province.
Since his story was posted online, it has gone viral, giving rise to widespread discussion and reflection on the modern dependence on technology. One netizen from Hubei province named Yangbu’er, commented that “while technology makes the world smaller, and we seem to have more resources to hand, we also lose some things”. Another from Fujian province, who goes by the online name of Silence, wrote that not having a phone means anxiety in modern society, because phones combine many functions in one: navigation aids, digital wallets, and social connectivity.
Although he foresaw that it would cause some discussion, the public attention his journey has drawn has gone beyond his imagination. He says that he has gained a great deal from his “experiment”. Now, he keeps a degree of distance from the Internet, and does not have Wi-Fi connected to his phone, or installed at home, and also limits his phone usage to 90 minutes per day. He even tries to finish all his work at his art studio in the UK, which has Internet access.
24. What makes Yang Hao’s trip unbelievable?
A. The destinations. B. The offline way. C. The expense. D. The distance.
25. What does Yang Hao think of his trip?
A. Adventurous. B. Meaningless. C. Common. D. Rewarding.
26. Which of the following may the netizen Silence agree to?
A. Internet is supposed to provide more functions.
B. People can’t deal with anything without the Internet.
C. We may be too dependent on the Internet nowadays.
D. We lose too much due to the presence of the Internet.
27. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The various functions of the Internet.
B. The popularity of Yang Hao’s journey.
C. Yang Hao’s changes brought by the trip.
D. Yang Hao’s expectation for the next trip.
C
Though CrossFit is often seen as a sport for the super fit, that shouldn’t put you off from trying it. CrossFit is designed to be accessible to everyone, with appropriate workouts suited for all ages and abilities.
By combining strength and aerobic exercise, CrossFit can be an effective way of improving functional fitness, muscle strength and cardiovascular health. But if that’s not enough to convince you, our latest study suggests CrossFit’s benefits for physical health.
To conduct our study, we investigate 280 people from the UK who did CrossFit. Participants ranged in age from 19 — 67. They were asked about their health, what prescription (处方) drugs they took and any changes in their prescriptions since starting CrossFit. Through surveys, we found that 54 percent of participants who’d been taking a prescription drug before starting CrossFit said they decreased their amount after starting. Among this group of 151 people, 69 reported stopping their medication entirely, while the remaining 82 said they had cut their prescription amount by more than half.
CrossFit’s combination of strength, aerobic and functional exercises helps enhance muscle strength and endurance, which can reduce pressure on joints and pain. The high-intensity nature of CrossFit also promotes the release of endorphins which can alleviate discomfort and enhance physical flexibility, leaving participants feeling more empowered and uplifted. As well, CrossFit emphasizes movement patterns and mobility, which can help improve flexibility and reduce stiffness. All of these factors might help explain why some of the participants who’d suffered with chronic pain before starting CrossFit relied less on painkillers after six months of training.
Nevertheless, this study has some limitations to note. The data relies on self-reported information, which can lead to biased results as participants may not accurately remember their prescription use or be influenced by their feelings about CrossFit. Additionally, the study didn’t track other lifestyle changes participants might have made, such as diet improvements or other forms of exercise. So more research is needed to understand the full picture.
28 What did the author’s study find?
A. CrossFit is not suitable for every participant.
B. CrossFit has the same effect on all the participants.
C. CrossFit makes participants stop medication entirely.
D. CrossFit helps most participants reduce the medicine intake.
29. What does the underlined word “alleviate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Relieve. B. Increase. C. Produce. D. Stimulate.
30. Why is more research needed to be conducted about CrossFit?
A. Because false information is provided. B. Because people’s lifestyles are changeable.
C. Because the data collected is not fully reliable. D. Because people are too convinced of their feelings.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. CrossFit –– A Promising Star in Sports. B. CrossFit –– A Killer of Pressure and Pain.
C. CrossFit –– An Assistant to Overall Health. D. CrossFit –– A Sport Popular around the World.
D
Mosquitoes (蚊子) are normally associated with spreading malaria rather than preventing it, but in a new study scientists have used the insects to administer (接种) a promising new vaccine (疫苗) that could offer much better protection against the disease than current options.
It’s the second generation of this particular vaccine type, and the improvement shown in this study is significant: eight out of nine young adults given the new vaccine were protected against malaria, compared with one out of eight given the existing one.
The new vaccine, developed by researchers from Leiden University and Radboud University in the Netherlands, uses a genetically weakened version of the Plasmodium Falciparum parasite (寄生虫) that causes malaria in humans. This version (GA2) doesn’t trigger malaria, but does prepare the body to guard against it.
“These disabled parasites are administered through a mosquito bite and reach the human liver as usual,” says vaccinologist Meta Roestenberg, from Leiden University. “But because of the gene turned off, this parasite cannot complete its development in the liver, cannot enter the bloodstream, and thus cannot cause disease symptoms.” “Meanwhile, this infection (感染) does create a strong immune response in the liver, which can protect the person from a real malaria infection in the future.” Meta Roestenberg added.
The GA2 vaccine triggered a bigger and more diverse set of immune cells, the study showed, which explains its much improved effectiveness.
Observed side effects were relatively minor, the researchers report, and mostly involved redness and itchiness around the mosquito bites. All participants were put on a course of anti-malaria drugs after the study data had been collected.
Progress continues to be made in tackling malaria, whether it’s cutting it off at the source or protecting the human body. However, we’re still seeing almost 250 million cases per year, and hundreds of thousands of deaths – and current vaccines only protect around 50-77 percent of the population, often for not much longer than a year. “In short, the test with our new disabled GA2 parasite performs very well,” says clinical microbiologist Matthew McCall, from Radboud University. “We now plan to test vaccination with similar GA2 parasites in real life.”
32. What do we know about the new vaccine according to this passage?
A. It can protect against malaria thoroughly.
B. It is more expensive than the existing one.
C. It probably works better on young people.
D. It is administered through a mosquito bite.
33. What does Meta Roestenberg illustrate in paragraph 4?
A. How the new vaccine works. B. What the study focuses on.
C. Why mosquitoes are critical. D. When the infection happens.
34. Why does the new vaccine have better effectiveness?
A It has minor side effects. B. It brings parasites to light.
C. It can reach the human liver. D. It activated more immune cells.
35. What is Matthew McCall’s attitude toward the new vaccine?
A. Optimistic. B. Pessimistic. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful.

It was an ordinary morning. As usual, I walked to the subway station to catch the train. Along the way, I noticed the streets filled with rubbish dumps (堆) everywhere and some people begging for food and money from passers-by. The air around smelt bad, making people choked. Everything around me seemed so boring. Before I knew it, I came to the crossing of the road to wait for the light, holding tightly a pile of documents against my chest. I took a glance of these papers on which I spent a whole night, thinking of the coming presentation I would give to the whole company at the conference.
Suddenly I noticed a little boy approaching me, who was in old and shabby clothes, with a face that seemed as if it had never been washed at all. I thought it for granted that he was a beggar. I felt so sick at that moment that as soon as the light turned green, I hurried to cross the road in order to pull myself away from him. However, when I came to the other side of the road, I heard the little boy shouting at me from behind, “Bhaiya! Bhaiya!”( Big brother ), but I pretended not to hear him, so I didn’t answer him at all.
My inner self complained the country for its poor conditions. “Why are there always so many people begging for money in the street?” It all kept annoying me, making me feel more unwilling to answer him. “Bhaiya! Bhaiya!” I heard him keeping calling out to me, which made me even more impatient and angrier. Finally, I couldn’t bear it any more and shouted at him that I had no money to give him. But the boy, without even bothering to hear my words of despair, cried with anxiety, “Bhaiya! Your papers!”, waving his hand in the air.

We stand at a great moment in our history. We have for a long time known of the dangers of global warming, but sadly little action has been taken to respond to it. However, we have listened to our children campaigning all across the world, and we have chosen to listen to them, and make hard choices.
We have set a date of 2025 for petrol-based cars to stop production. In addition, our governments will bring in a vehicle exchange system.
It will allow drivers to trade in their car for an electric model at no additional cost. We see this as an urgent action that needs to be taken. We cannot put profits ahead of the health of our planet. For too long, the industries that pollute the most have dragged their heels. Well no more! In addition, we will also be banning all plastic bottles by 2030. Unless producers can find a way to make plastic break down, we would suggest a return to glass bottles. They can easily be reused and recycled with no harm to the environment.
Plastic has invaded our food supply, and we need to remove it urgently before it destroys our planet’s ecosystem.

Although he foresaw that it would cause some discussion the public attention his journey has drawn has gone beyond his imagination.

25. What does Yang Hao think of his trip?
A. Adventurous. B. Meaningless. C. Common. D. Rewarding.

D. We lose too much due to the presence of the Internet.
27. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

28. What did the author’s study find?
D 29. A 30. C 31. C
根据第三段“Through surveys, we found that 54 percent of participants who’d been taking a prescription drug before starting CrossFit said they decreased their amount after starting. Among this group of 151 people, 69 reported stopping their medication entirely, while the remaining 82 said they had cut their prescription amount by more than half.(通过调查我们发现,在开始进行CrossFit之前正在服用处方药的参与者中,有54%的人表示在开始锻炼后减少了用药量。在这151名参与者中,有69人完全停用了药物,而其余82人则表示他们的处方药用量减少了超过一半)”可知,CrossFit可以减少参与者的药量。故选D。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“The high-intensity nature of CrossFit also promotes the release of endorphins which can alleviate discomfort and enhance physical flexibility, leaving participants feeling more empowered and uplifted.(CrossFit的高强度训练模式还能促使人体分泌内啡肽,这种物质能够alleviate不适感并增强身体的柔韧性,从而使参与者感到更加充满力量和精神振奋)”可知,内啡肽可以提高身体灵活性,让参与者感到精神振奋,所以可以推测出前文中alleviate意思是“减缓”,故选A。
根据最后一段“Nevertheless, this study has some limitations to note. The data relies on self-reported information, which can lead to biased results as participants may not accurately remember their prescription use or be influenced by their feelings about CrossFit.(然而,这项研究存在一些需要指出的局限性。
A. It has minor side effects. B. It brings parasites to light.
C. It can reach the human liver. D. It activated more immune cells.

Secrets for shopping healthier at the supermarket
Shopping at the supermarket for groceries can be an adventure tour, for food producers don’t always have your best interests in mind. ___36___.
Look for a short ingredient list
When you find a packaged food with a long list of ingredients on the label, just put it back on the shelf and look for a simpler version of the food. ___37___. Check the list of ingredients every time, because a shorter ingredient list equals fewer added sugars and preservatives (防腐剂).
Learn what “organic” really means
___38___. All organic farms must keep records and be inspected by officially recognized inspectors. Many supermarkets now carry some organic food, and farmers’ markets, health food stores, and individual farms are good sources of organic food.
___39___.
If you feel like the food labels “natural” and “organic” can be exchanged, well that’s exactly what food companies want you to think. Although there’s no single set of requirements for products claiming to be natural, such labels are still supposed to be accurate. Farmers or food companies that use the “natural” label are not forced to be inspected as a condition of using the label.
Don’t get trapped by watery foods
Water is the magic ingredient in prepared foods, and if it’s first on the list of ingredients, it’s clear that there’s a long list of additives (添加剂) to follow. ___40___. After all, soup does take a lot of water. Since oil and water don’t mix, it takes a bunch of additives to hold everything together.
A. Be cautious of “natural” labels
B. Purchase the food with “natural” labels.
C. Water is cheap, so the food industry favors it.
D. The organic label is earned through an officially approved process.

E 37. F 38. D 39. A 40. G
根据上文“Shopping at the supermarket for groceries can be an adventure tour, for food producers don’t always have your best interests in mind.(在超市购买食品杂货可能会是一次有趣的探索之旅,因为食品生产商并不总是会从你的角度出发考虑问题)”可知,文章开头首句概述超市购物是一场带有冒险性质的旅途,空后一句提示下文将列举出一些解决此类问题的诀窍。
根据上文“All organic farms must keep records and be inspected by officially recognized inspectors. Many supermarkets now carry some organic food, and farmers’ markets, health food stores, and individual farms are good sources of organic food.(所有有机农场都必须做好记录,并接受官方认可的检查员的检查。如今,许多大型超市都开始销售一些有机食品,而农民市场、健康食品店以及个体农场都是获取有机食品的优质来源)”以及本段主题是“Learn what “organic” really means(了解“有机”的真正含义)”可知,后文提到“所有的有机农场都必须保留记录并接受官方认可的检查员的检查”。D项(有机标签是通过官方批准的过程获得的)是对后文内容的概括和解释。故选D。
【39题详解】
根据后文“If you feel like the food labels “natural” and “organic” can be exchanged, well that’s exactly what food companies want you to think. Although there’s no single set of requirements for products claiming to be natural, such labels are still supposed to be accurate. Farmers or food companies that use the “natural” label are not forced to be inspected as a condition of using the label.(如果你觉得“天然”和“有机”这两个标签可以相互替代,那么这正是食品公司希望你这么认为的。尽管对于声称是“天然”的产品并没有统一的认证标准,但这些标签仍应是准确的。使用“天然”标签的农民或食品公司并不需要因为使用该标签而接受检查)”可知,这是本段的小标题。本段主要讲述了“天然”标签和“有机”标签的区别,指出“天然”标签没有严格的检查要求。A项(对“天然”标签要保持谨慎)准确概括了本段的警示内容。故选A。
根据上文“Water is the magic ingredient in prepared foods, and if it’s first on the list of ingredients, it’s clear that there’s a long list of additives (添加剂) to follow.(水是预制食品中的神奇成分,如果水是配料表中的首位成分,那么显然接下来还会有大量的添加剂)”以及本段主题是“不要被含水量高的食物所困”。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next moment, I was frozen and couldn’t feel my legs. The poor little boy, who ran towards me out of breath, handed me the papers with his dirty hands. Seeing his shabby clothes and shining eyes, I felt my blood rushing to my face and a burst of shame seized me. Without the boy, I would have wasted a whole night’s effort and made a fool of myself in front of all my colleagues. But I treated such a nice boy with prejudice and impatience. Shame on me!
I made up my mind to do something to reward his kindness. I went to the nearby grocery and bought him a big ice cream. Surprised and delighted, the little boy jumped to his feet and said “thanks” to me constantly. Seeing his sparkling eyes with excitement, I felt a warm current welling up in my heart. In fact, it was I who should say thanks to him. Thanks to the little boy, I learnt that, “Kindness has nothing to do with what a man looks like.”
