NATIONAL FILM THEATRE PRESENTS
SONG OF THE SHIRT
The National Film Theatre is pleased to announce the screening of a new and important film from Britain — Susan Clayton and Jonathon Curling’s SONG OF THE SHIRT.
SONG OF THE SHIRT was undoubtedly the most ambitious film at the 1979 Edinburgh Film Festival and is regarded as something of a milestone for feminist (女性主义) film-making.

The 68 members of the Giving Voice St. Paul Chorus, many living with dementia (老年痴呆), recently took the stage at Sundin Music Hall for their spring concert. Wearing ironed white shirts and light purple scarves, they sang beloved tones like “Singing’ in the Rain” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” after four months of weekly practices. Joined by caregivers and loved ones, they’re part of a global movement of “memory choirs” using music to support those with memory loss.
Founded in 2014 with 35 members, Giving Voice has inspired over 70 similar choirs worldwide. With 55 million people living with dementia globally and no cure, these choirs offer much-needed hope. They’re not just fun — growing research shows music helps preserve memories, boost brain function and ease the loneliness often felt by patients.
Neurologist Borna Bonakdarpour, whose own grandmother with dementia responded to music, studies choirs like Chicago’s Good Memories. His 2025 study found singers reported better emotional and intellectual well-being, with social interactions reducing isolation. Brain scans suggest musical memories are stored differently, staying unchanged longer — why even late-stage patients can recall songs. Singing engages more brain areas than speaking, aiding memory and communication.
For Mike Gair, diagnosed with early dementia, choir practices are a weekly highlight. His daughter Andrea says he’s more alert and grateful post-sessions. Caregivers benefit too: choirs strengthen bonds and build a supportive community. Jayne Lindesmith uses singing to help her late-stage dementia mom with daily tasks.
While much remains unknown, these choirs deliver joy and connection. “People with dementia are more than their diagnosis,” says Giving Voice’s Eyleen Braaten. As dementia cases rise, music-based nonmedical approaches prove a powerful tool — reminding us of song’s ability to bring joy and community in life’s toughest moments.
4. What is the main idea about this passage?
A. The choirs’ methods were widely used around the world.
B. The Neurologist Borna Bonakdarpour was support with the choirs.
C. The song can foster the dementias’ memory skills.
D. The music-based method is a powerful tool for all of us.
5. Neurologist Borna Bonakdarpour’s research suggests that ________.
A. musical memorys’ storage is different from the others.
B. singing can inspire more brain areas than speaking.
C. singing can help us in memorizing and communicating.
D. singing can make us more socialized.
6. According to paragraph 4, the choirs can ________.
A. help us to diagnose dementia B. benefit both patients and caregivers.
C. make a more harmonious community D. help late-stage patients to do tasks.
7. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage ?
A. Memory Choirs: Singing for Hope and Connection in Dementia Care
B. Giving Voice Chorus: A Spring Concert for Dementia Patients
C. Music’s Effect on Dementia: A 2025 Neurological Study
D. Caregivers and Dementia: Finding Support Through Choir

Coral bleaching (珊瑚白化) turns colorful coral reefs into pale, ghostly areas — and it’s a growing global problem threatening sea life and humans. Between 2023 and 2025, 84% of the world’s reefs felt warm water stress, and the 2023-2024 global bleaching event hit hard. In the southern Great Barrier Reef, 80% of coral areas turned pale, turning once-vibrant spots into empty, lifeless zones.
Healthy corals live with tiny algae called zooxanthellae. These small organisms use sunlight to make food and share up to 90% of it with corals — this gives reefs their bright red, orange, pink and purple colors. But this balance breaks when the ocean changes. The main cause is warmer water from climate change. Pollution, poor water quality, too much dirt in the sea, or being exposed to air during very low tides can also trigger bleaching. Stressed corals push the algae out, losing their color and main food source.
Bleached corals aren’t dead right away, but they’re in serious trouble. They struggle to reproduce and lose their slimy (粘的) protective layer, a defense against harmful germs. Without it, they get sick much more easily. If conditions return to normal fast, algae may come back and corals heal. If stress lasts, they starve to death soon.
Reefs are home to 25% of all sea creatures, giving fish safe places to live, eat and breed. When reefs die, fish numbers drop sharply, disrupting the ocean food chain. Coastal towns lose fish for food and tourism jobs, hurting local lives. For Hawaiians, corals are culturally important — seen as the first created animals. Reefs also protect coasts by slowing waves by 97%. Without them, beaches erode faster and floods hit harder. As bleaching worsens, we need to act quickly to stop climate change and save these vital ocean homes.
8. What can we infer about zooxanthellae and corals?
A. They depend on each other for survival. B. They compete for the same food sources.
C. They live independently in normal times. D. They harm each other under stress.
9. Which condition may let bleached corals recover?
A. Fish nearby provide extra food supplies. B. Harmful germs around corals disappear.
C. Ocean environment turns stable quickly. D. Coastal tourism activities get reduced.
10. Why are coral reefs important to coastal towns?
A. They increase area of the current beaches.
B. They reduce wave power to protect shores.
C. They bring more color to the ocean view.
D. They speed up the process of water flow.
11. What does the passage imply about coral bleaching?
A. It is caused by one single environmental factor.
B. It is a phenomenon that can be ignored.
C. It is better to have more low-tide exposure.
D. It is a warning sign of worsening climate.

A 2026 study by a team from China Agricultural University focused on AI-based diet tracking technology, exploring how it changes people’s daily nutrition management and solving the long-standing problem that traditional diet records are time-consuming, inaccurate and hard to persist in, a dilemma that has troubled those who want to keep a healthy diet for years.
The researchers invited 300 volunteers of different ages to use AI tools that can analyze food nutrition by taking photos, asking them to record their three meals daily only by taking pictures instead of writing down every detail manually, so that the team could compare the accuracy and convenience of AI tracking with traditional methods over two months.
The AI tools identify food types and estimate their weight by recognizing colors, shapes and textures of the food in photos, and they can quickly match the nutrition data with a large cloud database, providing users with detailed reports including calories, proteins and vitamins in just a few seconds.
The results showed that volunteers using AI tools recorded their diets 82% more frequently than those using traditional methods, and the accuracy of nutrition calculation was 37% higher, as the AI could avoid mistakes caused by people’s poor memory or wrong estimation of food weight.
This technology also has obvious advantages in personalized guidance, for it can remember users’ health data and diet preferences, adjust nutrition suggestions dynamically and remind them to make up for missing nutrients in real time, which traditional nutrition books or simple apps can hardly achieve.
However, the study also pointed out that the AI still has limitations, such as failing to accurately identify complex mixed dishes or understand users’ emotional needs when they want to eat favorite foods even if they are not very healthy.
The researchers believe that with the improvement of algorithms, this AI technology will be more closely integrated into daily life, helping more people manage their diets scientifically without spending too much time and energy, and becoming a practical tool for daily health care.
12. What does the underlined word “dilemma” probably mean?
A. A tough and lasting trouble for people.
B. A new and creative technical invention.
C. A rare and accidental daily phenomenon.
D. A simple and easy-to-solve common issue.
13. What can we infer about AI’s personalized guidance?
A. It may be rarely achieved by simple apps.
B. It might ignore users’ health data and habits.
C. It could be easily replaced by nutrition books.
D. It may focus on mixed dish identification only.
14 Why is AI’s nutrition calculation more accurate?
A. It depends on people’s memory and guesses.
B. It avoids errors from manual recording flaws.
C. It only analyzes single and simple food types.
D. It requires users to write down daily details.
15. What is the author’s attitude to the AI technology?
A. It has both strengths and certain drawbacks.
B. It will bring more new problems in the future.
C It can fully replace traditional diet methods.
D. It has no potential in daily health management.

Effective Note-Taking: A Key to Academic Success
Taking notes is more than just copying down words from textbooks or lectures. ____16____ It helps you process information actively, retain knowledge for longer periods, and prepare efficiently for exams. However, many students struggle with note-taking, either writing too much or missing crucial points.
The Cornell Note-Taking System is a practical method worth trying. ____17____ Divide your notebook page into three sections: a narrow left column for key questions, a wide right column for main notes, and a bottom section for summaries. During a lecture or reading, focus on recording key facts and ideas in the right column.
____18____ This step turns passive note-taking into active learning, as you reflect on what you’ve written and identify core concepts. After finishing the note-taking, spend 5-10 minutes drafting a summary in the bottom section, which helps you grasp the overall structure of the content.
Another tip is to use abbreviations and symbols appropriately. ____19____ Overusing complex terms or full sentences can slow you down, making it hard to keep up with lectures. Common abbreviations like “info” for “information” and symbols like “→” for “lead to” can save time while ensuring clarity.
Remember, good note-taking is a skill that improves with practice. ____20____ By adapting methods like the Cornell System and optimizing your writing style, you can make note-taking a powerful tool for your academic journey.
A. It simplifies information without losing details.
B It is designed to enhance learning efficiency.
C. Review your notes within 24 hours of taking them.
D. It plays a vital role in academic learning processes.
E. Write down every word the lecturer mentions.
F. Fill the left column with questions after class.
G. Abbreviations often make notes hard to understand.

Sam Mitchell, diagnosed with autism (自闭症) at four — after already being labeled with ADHD and a severe peanut allergy — he’d shown signs of being “different” long before. His mom recalled he was a late talker, hated loud noises, and would have meltdowns if anyone touched his carefully arranged toys. Routine changes threw him off completely, and his way of thinking was always “out of the box.”
At school, things were even harder. Other students excluded (排挤) him, stared when he spoke, and hit him for not fitting their idea of “normal.” Every time he tried to join in, their confused or dismissive reactions made him feel like he’d said something wrong. So, even though he had so much he wanted to share, Sam chose silence. He shrank himself to avoid conflict, convinced no one would ever understand him.
That all shifted toward the end of his freshman year. Sam had held in his feelings for so long, endured (忍受) so much, that he reached his breaking point. Like a bear poked one too many times, his inner voice finally roared. He was done trying to please everyone else, done hiding who he was to fit in. He made a decision: he wasn’t going to stay quiet anymore.
Eager to find a way to express himself, Sam joined his high school’s media club. For the first time, he found people who didn’t look at him strangely — he made good friends and felt like he belonged. It was there that he stumbled into podcasting, and instantly fell in love with every part of it: the recording, the editing, the thrill of creating something from scratch. As he learned more, a spark of confidence grew inside him, and he realized he didn’t want to wait for college to share his thoughts — he had something to say right then.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答
Sam Mitchell created his first blog on the internet.

14. Why is AI’s nutrition calculation more accurate?
C. It can fully replace traditional diet methods.
D. It has no potential in daily health management.

【答案】例文
Sam Mitchell created his first blog on the internet. He named it “Unfiltered Voices” and filled it with stories of his struggles with autism, ADHD, and the pain of being excluded. Through podcast episodes and written posts, he shared his unique perspective on life — his love for science, his frustration with social misunderstandings, and his hope for a more inclusive world. To his surprise, messages poured in from people who resonated with his words: parents of autistic children, fellow students who felt isolated, and even some former classmates who apologized for their past behavior. His blog quickly gained traction, turning into a platform where voices once unheard were celebrated.
On the day of the interview with Sam, he talked openly about his experience. He didn’t shy away from describing the meltdowns, the silence, or the loneliness, but he also emphasized the strength he found in self-acceptance and expression. “For years, I tried to be someone I’m not to fit in,” he said. “But podcasting and blogging taught me that my differences are my superpower.” He hoped his story would encourage others to embrace their true selves and show the world that people with autism have so much to offer. As the interview ended, Sam smiled, knowing he had turned his pain into purpose—and that his voice would continue to inspire change.
