“Your playful days are over,” my brother said to me when he knew I was going to be a Senior One student. Then he continued telling me that senior school life was boring because I had to do a large amount of homework every day. The subjects were much more difficult than those of junior school.
I stepped into the school gate with a nervous heart. However, I was surprised to find what I experienced there was completely different from what my brother had told me.
The teachers gave excellent lessons in their own special way. They talked with me in a natural and fair way, as if I was an adult. All of them are so knowledgeable (学识渊博) and they not only explained the contents of textbooks but also provided extra information from other sources. Every word they said in classes made me so excited and interested that I had a strong desire to take in as much as I could.
In fact, my playful days were not over at all in senior school. There were many kinds of activities I could take part in. For example, sports meetings, the art festival, English corner, outing and so on. Best of all, generally, students organized the activities rather than teachers. Through this process, I improved my leadership abilities and communication skills. I’ve become mature (成熟的). I am not a kid any more.
Now if anyone asks me: “Through your process of growing up, which part is most impressive up till now?” Well, the answer will absolutely be my “senior high school life”.
44. How did the writer feel when he started his senior high school?

D. Beautiful and kind-hearted.
46. What has the writer learned by joining in different after-class activities?
A. Leadership and social skills.
B. The understanding of textbooks.
C. Reading and writing skills.
D. Doing housework.
47. What can you learn from the last paragraph?
A. His senior school life is the most memorable.
B. Senior school life was boring and tiring.
C. He will no longer believe in his brother.
D. The writer did well in all his subjects.

No pain, no gain, as the old exercise saying goes. But how much pain do you have to bear to benefit from training? That depends on what you’re trying to achieve, fitness experts say.
For years, some trainers have instructed gym-goers that to get the best results, they need to train until failure, meaning until they cannot physically do one more repetition or exercise. Some recent studies, however, suggest this extreme rule may only benefit certain people.
“If somebody wants to increase muscle (肌肉) mass as much as they possibly can, then training to failure is something to consider.” said Michael Zourdos, chair of exercise science and health promotion at Florida Atlantic University.
Zourdos and his colleagues found that training until failure may build bigger muscles, but isn’t needed to increase strength. He said people who work out hard, but don’t push themselves to the state of being totally tired out, will still likely improve their health and fitness. “There is a difference between training for health and training for excellent performance,” he said.
He also said failure training often comes at a cost, since people working to that standard might be so tired that they have no energy to join their next gym training or two. In extremely rare instances, overdoing it can be harmful, leading to a potentially fatal condition called rhabdomyolysis, where damaged muscles begin to break down, possibly causing kidney (肾脏) damage.
James Fisher, a sports science expert and consultant in Southampton, England, said whatever your fitness goal was, the concept of failure training could be applied into your workout. But people should then rest the muscle group they trained for roughly two days, he said.
For people who have more experience, experts recommend saving the failure training for occasional workouts, or on the last set of exercises in their training. “It’s not meant to be for every person, every time they work out,” Fisher said. “This is a tough way to exercise.”
48. What is the function of the saying in the first paragraph?
A. To give examples. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To make comparisons. D. To provide an argument.
49. What does the author want to show by mentioning rhabdomyolysis?
A. The harm of failure training. B. The benefit of eating healthily.
C. The importance of bigger muscles. D. The necessity of training in a gym.
50. What did James Fisher advise people to do after they train to failure?
A. Try lifting weights at once. B. Have their kidney checked.
C. Look for an excellent trainer. D. Rest for about two days.
51. What is the best title for the text?
A. How Hard Should You Train? B. How Often Should You Do Exercise?
C. How Can You Improve Your Health? D. How Do You Lose Weight in a Healthy Way?
D
When Reginald Johnston, a British scholar, first walked into the Forbidden City in 1919, most palaces weren’t allowed to visit. But a century later, when the People’s Republic of China is to celebrate its 70th founding anniversary in October, the 599-year-old palace complex (宫殿群) becomes the world’s busiest museum.
Open to the public
In the old days, ordinary people could only imagine what it looked like inside. When the Palace Museum was founded in 1925, the public could go into the palaces. Now 80% of the total area of the museum is open to the public and it will increase to 85% in 2025.

Attracting the youth
On the Palace Museum’s online store on Taobao, you can find more than 10,000 cultural products. The ones with cute and humorous pictures of emperors are very popular. Some favourite products also go offline. For example, the “Kangxi Emperor’s Favourite Chocolate”, the most popular drink, always has people lining up (排大队) to get a taste.
As a child, Xu Jing often rode a bike in front of the Meridian Gate (午门). “I had little memory of the museum then, but now I am more willing to visit it after watching several popular TV shows about the museum,” she said.

Learn How to Have a Learning Vacation
Going on a vacation to learn a skill you have long wanted to pick up sounds like a good getaway, but be cautious, said John Spence, the president of a travel company in Calif. “If you don’t pick the right skill for you, or go in with unrealistic expectations, your precious time off won’t be enjoyable,” he said.
Here, he shares his advice on planning a learning vacation that you won’t regret taking:
Follow your passion (热情). ____56____. They include cooking, photography, art history, farming or a sport such as diving or horseback riding. To get the most out of the trip, choose something you’re passionate about.
____57____? With whatever skill you intend to learn, figure out whether you want an immersion (沉浸) or only to occupy a part of your trip. Another option is to attend several half-day classes at the school and have more free time to explore the destination itself. “____58____, so make sure that it’s what you really want,” Mr. Spence said.
Consider your budget. No matter the skill, you can learn it by taking a vacation in a wide range of price ranges. ____59____.

B. The understanding of textbooks.

It’s possible to learn cooking basics, for example, by taking a weeklong course at Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland. Another option is to attend several half-day classes at the school and have more free time to explore the destination itself. “____58____, so make sure that it’s what you really want,” Mr. Spence said.
Consider your budget. No matter the skill, you can learn it by taking a vacation in a wide range of price ranges. ____59____. If you want to learn scuba diving (水肺式潜泳), for example, heading to the Maldives will cost several thousand dollars per person, while a scuba diving trip to the Florida Keys is a more wallet-friendly choice.
Don’t forget the children. ____60____, provided that they are fun. “Yes, you want your kids to learn, but you don’t want them to be bored by overloading them with too much information,” Mr. Spence said.
A. A little, or a lot
B. Don’t be influenced by others’ interests
C. What skill do you want to learn
D. Learning vacations can be great family trips, too
E. The options for what you can learn on your vacation are limitless
F. Having a clear idea of your budget will help you home in on the right trip
G. Spending your entire break devoted to learning something new can be stressful

【58题详解】
根据后文“so make sure that it’s what you really want(所以要确定这是你真正想要的)”可知,这是结果句,强调要确定自己的需求,那么设空句应是原因句,解释原因。选项G“Spending your entire break devoted to learning something new can be stressful(把整个假期都花在学习新东西上可能会有压力)”解释了原因,即,整个假期都在学习会有压力,因此要慎重确定自己的需求。故选G项。
【59题详解】
根据该部分主题“Consider your budget.(考虑你的预算。)”可知,该部分以“预算”为主题进行讲述,选项F“Having a clear idea of your budget will help you home in on the right trip(对你的预算有一个清晰的想法将帮助你踏上正确的旅程)”贴合主题,与前文“No matter the skill, you can learn it by taking a vacation in a wide range of price ranges.(不管你的技能是什么,你都可以通过各种价位的旅行来学习。)”在逻辑上衔接紧密。故选F项。
【60题详解】
根据该部分主题“Don’t forget the children.(别忘了孩子们。)”可知,该部分强调这种旅行也适合孩子,即,可以是家庭旅行的一种选择。选项D“Learning vacations can be great family trips, too(学习假期也可以是很棒的家庭旅行)”在句意上承接了主题句,进行了进一步解释,与后文“provided that they are fun(前提是它们很有趣)”构成了条件结果关系。故选D项。
