阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Celebrations around the World
Weddings
In China, people celebrate weddings with an eight-course meal, because the word eight in Chinese sounds like the word for good luck. The last dish of meal is always noodles. The bride and groom eat the noodles together, which symbolizes that the couple will support each other and enjoy a long, happy and healthy life.
Mother’s Day
Many people around the world honour their mothers on Mother’s Day. In the UK, Mother’s Day is celebrated in March or April. Son and daughters like to give their mother a day to rest, so they might surprise her by cleaning the house or cooking a nice meal for her. They also give her gifts such as flowers or jewellery. Many families take their mother to a restaurant for lunch or dinner.
New Year’s Eve
London celebrates New Year’s Eve in a big way. Thousands of people go to River Thames, and then, when it’s dark outside, fireworks light up the sky and Big Ben, the bell in London’s famous clock tower, strikes at midnight. The next day, people eat a big meal with family and friends, go for a walk or just relax at home.
Coming of Age Day
In Japan, people celebrate Coming of Age Day, or Seijin no Hi, on the second Monday in January. On this holiday, Japan congratulates people who have turned 20 years old between 2nd April of the past year and 1st April of the current year. In Japanese culture, this is the age when teenagers become adults and take on the responsibilities of being an adult. Young women usually wear a traditional furisode kimono, while young men often wear Western-style suits, and they attend a ceremony in their area. They receive small presents and celebrate with their friends after the ceremony.
1. Why do Chinese often have noodles as the last dish in their wedding?
A. Because noodles are long and thin.
B. Because noodles are a symbol of long life.
C. Because eight is a lucky number for Chinese.
D. Because noodles are the favorite food for Chinese.
2. What do Mother’s Day in the UK and New Year’s Eve in London have in common?
A. They both involve special meals.
B. They both involve fireworks and loud noises.
C. They take place at night and involve giving gifts.
D. They are celebrated as special occasions with friends.
3. What is the significance of Coming of Age Day in Japanese culture?
A. To wear traditional and Western-style suits.
B. To honor elderly citizens for their contributions.
C. To celebrate the birthdays of teenagers born in April.
D. To celebrate young people who have reached adulthood.

Jessica Alba has spent the past three years working towards buying her parents a house, but not just any house, she bought her father’s childhood home.
She took to Instagram to make the announcement, with a teaser video of her special home-renovation (翻新) project. “Almost three years ago, I started the project of my dreams... I surprised my parents by buying them a house!” she began, “Now, it wasn’t just a house — there was extra sentimental value as it was my grandparent’s house that my father grew up in,” she continued, “After my grandfather passed away, my parents were planning on selling the house in order to pay for my grandmother’s medical bills. Well... I pretended to help them repair and improve it before selling when in reality. I had planned to buy it for them all along.”
She published the first part of her renovation series on YouTube and in it explained the value of the house and how it was a symbol for her father, who was an immigrant from Mexico, that “he had made it”. Her family planned to sell it to reduce some of their financial burden at the beginning as her grandmother required “24/7 care”, but Alba wanted to keep the house in the family and so her plan began.
“Instead of giving it to a stranger, I wanted to keep this home in our family,” she said in the YouTube series. The moment when Alba surprised her parents was also captured in the video, with her father brought to tears as he was overcome with emotion. “That’s so sweet Jessica. That’s a big surprise,” he said while embracing his daughter, “I’m very proud of you.”
4. What does the word “sentimental” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Cultural. B. Economic. C. Emotional. D. Academic.
5. What was the plan of Jessica’s parents for the house?
A. To downsize their living space. B. To keep it for the next generation.
C. To decorate it and then rent it out. D. To sell it to reduce financial burden.
6. How did Jessica’s father react when he learned about the surprise?
A. He was moved and pleased. B. He was heartbroken and tearful.
C. He was happy but not surprised. D. He was indifferent and uninterested.
7. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To illustrate an unusual experience.
B. To look back on Jessica’s childhood.
C. To share a loving story of Jessica’s family.
D. To declare how much Jessica loves her first house.
C
Ana Gonzalez is a protected-areas analyst for the Canadian Wildlife Service in Delta, British Columbia. She studies migration patterns and track bird movement to improve protection efforts with local scientists to protect birds which are likely to become endangered.
The bird in my hand is a yellow-breasted chat (黄胸大䳭莺). This bird breeds in North America and then migrates to Mexico and Central America during the Northern Hemisphere’s autumn months. The chat is a crashing species in North America, in part because it relies on habitat next to bodies of water such as rivers and streams, much of which has been destroyed.
In 2001, one population in the Okanagan valley in Canada had just 25 breeding pairs remaining. But protection actions, including monitoring these birds and bringing back their habitats, have helped their populations to recover. There are now more than 250 breeding pairs in the area.
We know that population falls in North America can be linked not only to what happens in Canada and the United States, but also to what happens during migration or at the wintering grounds. Two years ago, I started a project with Scott Wilson, my colleague, and several co-workers in Mexico, to study these birds during the winter to better understand the dangers that they face.
Sergio Gómez and Adrián Cabrera are helping me to join radio transmitters (无线电发射设备) to chats so that we can track their movement. Sergio leads a bird-protection organization in Oaxaca, Mexico, and Adrián is a field biologist at the Bird Observatory of Tlaxiaco. I don’t work alone. Sergio is holding a radio transmitter, while Adrián is recording data. Could I do this work by myself? Probably, but it’s a lot easier when you have partners.
8. What’s the main reason for the fall of the chat in North America?
A. Lack of food. B. Climate change.
C. Air and water pollution. D. Natural environment destruction.
9. What can we learn about the protection actions in paragraph 3?
A. They turn out to be fruitful. B. They are difficult to carry out.
C. They fail to solve the problems. D. They mainly rely on volunteers.
10. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Good is rewarded with good. B. Two heads are better than one.
C. Hard work can lead to success. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
11. Where are you most likely to find the passage?
A. In a travel leaflet. B. In a geography textbook.
C. In a scientific research paper. D. In a popular nature magazine.
D
Barbados has devoted themselves to becoming fossil-fuel-free (无化石燃料) by 2030, but that will probably cause huge economic damage because not a lot of people here can afford an electric car. Brazil solved this problem with cars that run on sugarcane biofuel (甘蔗生物燃料), but there’s not enough sugarcane grown here to copy that approach. One of my students, Brittney McKenzie, saw a possible solution. There is a seaweed (a plant that grows in the sea or ocean) problem in Barbados. One tourist attraction was spending US $2 million every year to remove it from the beach. McKenzie asked. what if we use seaweed to make biofuel?
She tested it in the laboratory, and it worked so well that it changed my whole research path. I’m collecting seaweed to put into a digester, along with waste water from a local beer factory. Under conditions that do not need oxygen, the extremely small living things in the mix, feeding on the sugar in the waste water, digest the seaweed and produce gas biofuel. All the islands in this region have a seaweed problem and a wastewater problem — and finally a climate-change problem. This solution is a win-win-win.
We estimate that, if we changed 100,000 vehicles in Barbados -around 75% - to run on our biofuel, it would remove 17 million tons of carbon that was sent out into atmosphere over the average vehicle lifetime of 14 years. It would also reduce the cost of vehicle fuel to half for people in Barbados.
In 2021, my colleagues and I co-founded a start-up company, Rum & Sargassum, and now the first challenge is to find ways to expand to meet our goal of 2,000 customers here. Then, we must make people or organizations that spend money on our company believe that this is a workable solution for eco-friendly energy.
12. Why does the author mention Brazil’s solution?
A. To explain what it is. B. To praise its solution.
C To show its advantage. D. To introduce seaweed biofuel.
13. What’s the author’s attitude to biofuel in Barbados?
A. Uncertain. B. Promising. C. Doubtful. D. Curious.
14. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Turning Seaweed into Biofuel. B. The Market for Biofuel in Barbados.
C. The Challenges of Starting a Business. D. The Importance of Laboratory Research.
15. What is most likely to be discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Finding enough seaweed to meet demand.
B. Looking for effective solutions to the challenge.
C. Analyzing the impact of biofuel on Barbados’ economy.
D. Ensuring the company’s positive effect on the environment.

Is there anything more delicious than fresh fruit? Fresh fruit is definitely up there, and it’s hard to beat the taste of a ripe banana. If you’re like us, you’re always trying to keep bananas fresh. ____16____, here are some of the most effective ways you can keep bananas from browning too quickly.
Buy green bananas. The easiest way to lengthen your bananas’ shelf-life is to buy the greenest bananas you can find. They’re picked while they are still not ready to eat, then slowly ripen (成熟) over time to reach that bright yellow we love. ____17____, instead of picking up perfectly ripened bananas you’re eyeing.
Hang them. There’s a scientific reason you should be hanging your bananas from a hook. Bananas start ripening as soon as they’re picked from trees — ethylene (乙烯) gas comes out from the stems (茎) as soon as they’re picked, but when you hang bananas from a hook, the gas works more slowly. ____18____, which they’re more likely to do as they continue ripening.
____19____. Remember that ethylene gas that makes bananas ripen. It comes from the stems, which means you can cover those stems completely and tightly — with plastic or aluminum foil — to slow down the ripening process. For best results, take your bananas apart and wrap their stems individually.
Place ripe bananas in the fridge. One of the most important rules of keeping bananas is to never put them in the fridge. ____20____. You should keep green bananas out of the fridge, but once your bananas have completely ripened, you can move them to the fridge where the cool temperatures will keep them from ripening further (for a few days at least).
A. Choose green ones
B. Wrap banana stems
C. Freeze your banana stems
D. If you want to eat healthily
E. But rules are meant to be broken
F. Hanging bananas also prevents them from spoiling
G. Especially if you’ve bought a hand of bananas but only want to eat one at a time

第四部分 任务型阅读(共两节,满分20分)
任务型阅读
At the top of a three-storey building in Greenwich Village lived a pair of friends, Sue and Johnsy, who liked the same kind of art, food, and clothes. Toward winter, a bad sickness — pneumonia (肺炎) — visited the village and touched many people, including Johnsy. She lay, barely moving, in her bed staring at a blank wall.
The doctor took Sue aside and claimed, “She has one chance in ten. And that chance is for her to want to live. Try to encourage her to think more positively about living.” Sue began drawing in Johnsy’s room, attempting to raise Johnsy’s spirits. Johnsy stared out the window, counting backwards: “Ten, nine, eight, seven ...”
“What are you counting, dear?” asked Sue.
“Three days ago there were almost a hundred. But there are only five left now. Five leaves! When the last one falls, I must go, too.” replied Johnsy.
“Oh, I never heard of such a thing,” snapped Sue, “Try to sleep.” Then she went to fetch her neighbour, Mr. Behrman, who was a failed painter. In 40 years he had never produced a masterpiece. Told about Johnsy’s longing to slip away like the leaves, Behrman cried with disbelief. “Are there people in the world that foolish to think they’ll die because leaves drop off from a vine? Someday I will paint a masterpiece, and we shall all go away.” Behrman and Sue looked out of the window at the vine and noticed there was just one remaining leaf. What’s more, a cold rain was falling, mixed with snow.
The next morning, Johnsy woke and asked for the curtains to be opened. One leaf remained on the vine, bravely holding on in the wind and rain. “It will fall today. And I will die with it.” The following day, the leaf was still there! Johnsy lay for a long time looking at it. “It is a crime to want to die.” said Johnsy, then she asked for some food.
In the afternoon, the doctor visited, “Even chances,” said the doctor, “with good nursing, you’ll win. And now I must see a fellow downstairs, Behrman, pneumonia, too. There is no hope for him.”
The next day, Sue came to Johnsy’s bed and said, “Mr. Behrman died today. He was found lying in bed helplessly with pain yesterday morning, wet through and icy cold. They couldn’t imagine where he had been on such a terrible night. And then they found a lantern, still lit, and some brushes, and-look out of the window, dear... Didn’t you wonder why it never moved an inch when the wind blew? Ah, dear, it’s Behrman’s masterpiece-he painted it there the night when the last ivy leaf fell.”

Dear Tom,
How’s everything going? I’m writing to invite you to join the Chinese Cultural Week to be held at our school during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday.
The event aims to spread Chinese traditional culture and strengthen cultural exchange among students. You’ll have the chance to experience various cultural activities. From February 6th to 12th, there will be exhibitions on calligraphy, paper-cutting, and traditional costumes, as well as workshops where you can try making dumplings and painting Peking Opera masks. Live performances such as folk music and dragon dances will also be held on the last day.
As you’re interested in Chinese culture, you’ll definitely enjoy it. I truly hope you can come and share this wonderful experience with us.
Yours,
Li Hua
