Dear Lisa.
I'm delighted to know you are going to take part in a Chinese poetry reciting contest. The fact
that you are so interested in Chinese culture makes me happy. Now I'd like to offer you some
practical advice.
You should have a thorough understanding of what you are going to read.Only by doing this
can you appreciate its beauty. Moreover, correct your pronunciation by listening to Chinese radio
programs because all the announcers speak standard Chinese. What's more,it is a good idea to make
some Chinese friends and communicate with them as often as possible, which can improve your
spoken Chinese.
Wish you good luck and success.
Yours,
Li Hua
The next day,I dragged myself to the rehearsal, still feeling disheartened. As we began,I watched
the princesses dance gracefully,a twinge of jealousy stirring within me.But then,as I started to act
out my role, something shifted.Mr.Ellison's words echoed in my mind,"Every role is important."
Gradually,I immersed myself in the character of the old woman. My lines flowed naturally, and I
found a newfound respect for my role.To my surprise,my performance drew applause from my
peers.This small role,I realized,could be a powerful one.
Finally, the great day arrived, and"the old woman"couldn't wait to get on stage. As the
curtains opened,a rush of excitement filled me.I delivered my lines with conviction, feeling more
alive on stage than I had ever been. The audience laughed at my humorous lines, and I felt a sense
of accomplishment. When the final curtain fell, the applause was deafening.Mr.Ellison's words
had been right-every role was important.I had found my place in the spotlight, not as a
princess, but as an old woman who helped a soldier. And it was enough.

My wife always wanted a Vizsla,so when we got the house, the garden and
everything sorted,we did some research and found a lovely breeder (based in
Scotland. He was in charge of everything,so a few months go by and the next thing I
know,we've got a puppy!
I've grown up with animals all my life, and I'm so glad I have.I love the fact that
I was never afraid of any animals.Although you do obviously have to be careful when
introducing children to a dog they don't know, because you don't know how it's
going to behave,it always saddens me when I see children scared when they walk
past Pedro.I think it's great for kids to learn how to look after an animal.
And obviously for us,as a family,it's brilliant because we take Pedro for so
第3页共12页
many walks.It's a bit of a family bonding experience getting out in the fresh air;
taking Pedro for a walk multiple times a day is just really lovely.Meanwhile, the most
rewarding,I think,is just seeing how amazing he is with the kids.He is so calm,so
protective,so loving, and we are his world.
I think the most challenging aspects with Pedro were when he was a puppy
)He was pretty hard work.He was never aggressive, but he was quite bitey as
puppies are, constantly pulling out your clothes and putting holes in them, which is
very annoying. He chewed the furniture-my sofas are barely standing up;their
wooden legs are almost in pieces.Obviously, the dog training in the house was quite
stressful and his jumping at strangers in the park and running off was always quite
scary.
As a new puppy owner, you're overloaded with advice from social media,
magazines, other dog owners and friends,so finding a source of information you trust
is so important and can be a real turning point.I know what it's like to be bombarded
with conflicting information,so I would have really welcomed Royal Canin's"One in
a Billion"platform as a new puppy owner.It's a one-stop shop for new dog owners:a
single source of credible information that is so helpful in navigating the early stages
of your puppy's life.

A.Dogs are man's best friends.
B.It is worthless to have a dog.

We have more ways to access music than at any time in history and a whole
world of unfamiliar styles to explore. The thrill of discovering new songs and new
sounds can enrich people of all ages.Except, most of the time,it doesn't.Our
willingness to explore new, unfamiliar music declines with age.
Academics have coined the term "open-earedness"to describe this phenomenon.
Until around the age of 11,children are generally happy to engage with unfamiliar
music.Early adolescence sees a reduction in open-earedness,but is accompanied by
an intense increase in interest in music more generally.Open-earedness increases
slightly during young adulthood, and then declines as we age.
A major study involving more than 250,000 participants confirmed these
changing behaviors. It also showed that the significance we give to music after
adolescence declines, and the amount of music we listen to reduces from a high point
of 20%of our waking time during adolescence,to 13%in adulthood.
Researchers have different theories to account for these trends. One explanation
for age-based reduction in music consumption simply assumes that
responsibility-burdened adults may have less free time at their disposal(自由支配)to
explore their musical interests than younger people.
Some interpret the observed decline in music engagement in terms of
psychosocial maturation.Adolescents use music as an identity marker and engage
with it to navigate social circles.Adults have developed personalities and established
social groups. As such, drivers to engage with new music are lessened.
Some researchers argue that we shouldn't use a person's age to predict if their
musical taste will stay the same, without first thinking about how we enjoy and use
music at different stages of our lives.Teenagers tend to be very aware of what they
are listening to.Adults who use music as motivation or accompaniment for activities
such as exercise or household chores may be less conscious of the extent to which
第5页共12页
they actually do listen to new music.
28.What does the term "open-earedness"refer to in the passage?
A.The ability to play music.
B.The willingness to explore new music.
C.The interest in music during adolescence.
D.The significance of music in daily life
29.According to the study, how does the amount of music listened to change as we
age?
A.It remains consistent throughout life
B.It increases from childhood to adulthood.
C.It peaks during adolescence and then decreases.
D.It gradually declines from childhood to adulthood.
30.What factor is suggested as one cause for a reduced interest in new music as
people age?
A.An increase in hearing sharpness.B.Less spare time due to responsibilities.
C.An intense decrease in interest in music
D.Changes in personality and social groups.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Music Consumption:A Lifelong Journey.
B.Factors Influencing Music Engagement in Adults.
C.Adolescents and Music:Identity and Exploration.
D.Decline of Open-Earedness:Age Affects Music Exploration.

There are functioning steam railways in other countries:tourists in France can go
for a ride in Brittany;so can visitors travelling to the Dandenong Ranges in Australia.
But no other country has a heritage railway sector anywhere near as energetic as the
UK's,where more than 170 services cross around 600 miles of track and call at 460
stations.
Just a few years after the first of these railways opened at Talyllyn in north
Wales,in1951,a fictional Welsh steam engine became the main character in the
children's television serial Ivor the Engine. On lines originally built for slate quarries
第6页共12页
(石板采石场),north Wales still has the biggest group of steam railways, but they
exist in all four nations of the UK,typically operating seasonal timetables in tourist
areas. These railways are living museums with stations decorated in period style.
Some staff wear costumes too.
Up to 95%of the 18.5m journeys on heritage railways each year are taken by
domestic tourists. They owe their popularity to a combination of nostalgia ()
enjoyment of the countryside and enthusiasm for the old engines.
Railways are expensive to run,and the first steam preservation enthusiasts
recognised that they would need volunteers to make their dream of a revival come
true. This reliance on volunteers is partly due to cuts in budgets from local authorities
and other funders. But heritage railways are a good example of what can be achieved
by a combined paid and voluntary workforce. As well as the economic contribution
that the railways make to rural areas, there is evidence that volunteering can have
beneficial effects on people as well.
The railways will need to respond, like the rest of the society,to environmental
policies. The destructive impact of greenhouse gases is an obvious challenge to a
sector that trades on an image of coal-powered transport.Electric railway engines are
being used for maintenance,to bring emissions down, and some railways are active in
wildlife conservation. There will need to be further adaptation down the line. That the
railways don't stand still has always been part of their appeal especially on rainy days
in the summer holidays.
32.How are the UK's steam railways different from other countries'?
A.They are active across the countries.B.They serve as tourist attractions.
C.They are mainly powered by steam.D.They use small amounts of energy.
33.Why does the author mention Ivor the Engine?
A.To spread knowledge of the classic serial.
B.To introduce the origin of steam engines.
C.To show the popularity of steam railways.
D.To share a childhood memory of travelling.
34.What can we infer from paragraph 4?
第7页共12页
A.Volunteers help to keep heritage railways alive.
B.Economic growth depends on individual efforts.
C.People can't afford to travel by heritage railway.
D.Local officials don't use old means of transport.
35.What is the author's attitude towards heritage railways?
A.Indifferent.B.Doubtful.C.Appreciative.D.Negative.

Many students want to learn a foreign language well, but what must they do?In
my opinion,in order to know a foreign language thoroughly, four things are
necessary.36Secondly,we must be able to speak it ourselves correctly with
confidence and without hesitation.Thirdly,we must be able to read the language, and
fourthly,we must be able to write it.37
There is no easy way to success in language learning.A good memory is a great
help.38 It is not much use learning by heart long lists of words and their
meanings, studying the dictionary and so on.
39 If we are satisfied with only a few rules we have memorized,we are
not really learning the language."Learn through use"is a good piece of advice for
those who are studying a new language.Practice is important.40
A.We must learn by using the language.
B.To master a foreign language is very important.
C.Firstly,we must understand the language when we hear it spoken.
D.We must be able to make sentences that are grammatically correct.
E.We must study how we have to do to learn a foreign language
F.But it is not enough only to memorize rules from a grammar book.
G.We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever we can.
