I really wanted to volunteer at a national park, but I was too late to apply, so I went for a job at a diving center. This turned out to be Better than what I considered like helping in a school. When IT comes to packing, obviously you need your travel documents, your phone and charger. Then think about any medicine you might need. How did I stay in touch with family? When I first arrived, I wrote a letter every week. They took at least four weeks to arrive, though. Then when I met someone else who had a blog, I realized that that's the thing to do. A phone call is nice, but the time difference can make that difficult. There are lots of things you'll need to adapt to when you're in another country. The language, of course, but luckily so many people speak english. And I knew i'd struggle with the hot food. I hadn't realized the effect that climate would have on us, though, generally speaking, I really enjoyed my time away. It's a good way to make friends and you gain confidence too.

Still seeking a destination for your holiday? We want to inform you of four best places that are probably a mere walk away from your home.
Highlands
This Scottish destination, only accessible on foot or by boat, is Britain’s last wilderness. Over a week, you’ll hike into the Black Hills, cross the peninsula north to south and set sail for hikes on Skye, Rum and Eigg. Finish each day at a beach-side lodge (小屋) with dinner at the award-winning restaurant next door.
Snowdonia
The Snowdonia Way, the only low-level long-distance route, was only created in 2017, and remains unnoticed on the ground. Join the new guided walking trip and you won’t need to concentrate on directions, just the fine views as you pass falls, forests, riversides and Roman roads.
Hadrian’s Wall
Walking along Hadrian’s Wall is like travelling back in time — and even more so if you do it in expert companion. Andante’s hike along the ancient barrier is accompanied by a historian every step of the way, who will point out every Roman road, fort, milecastle and inscription, and tell you all about Hadrian’s tactics and Roman daily life.
Dorset
The Isle of Purbeck is ideal for families: the walking is relatively gentle; the beaches are glorious; the range of other attractions varied; and the buses handy, if little legs get tired. Over a few days, mix rambling the coast and hills (routes are around five or six miles) with steam train rides and sea swims, playing knights at ruined Corfe Castle and fossil-hunting at Kimmeridge Bay.
21.What do we know about Highlands?
A.It is very modern. B.It is a guided trip.
C.It can be reached by bus. D.It provides quality dinner.
22.Which of the following is the best choice for families?
A.Snowdonia. B.Dorset. C.Hadrian’s Wall. D.Highlands.
23.What do the four destinations have in common to the target readers?
A.They are very near. B.They are very far.
C.They are very cheap. D.They are very expensive.
B
Leaving our hostel in the centre of Phnom Penh, we climb inside our small Tuk Tuk cabin attached to the back of Kivi’s motorbike; a bottle of water in one hand and a sunflower mask in the other we set off on our 45-minute commute. It is a familiar start to the day as we meet two other volunteers. We are setting out to work in an orphanage just outside Cambodia’s capital city.
The morning rush hour in Phnom Penh is crowded and chaotic. Kivi directs our path between the trucks, 4×4 Lexus and countless motorbikes, which often carry entire families. We reach the dusty highway, having put on substandard masks earlier to protect our ears and lungs. A maze of concrete buildings and huts exist along the side of the road among a sea of rubbish. The residents often smile and wave as we pass by.
We turn onto a farm track. The last part of our journey is a roller coaster, jumping out of potholes (坑洼)and turning to avoid falling off the sinking road. We pass huts on stilts (木桩), skinny cows and farm yards where children jump and scream upon seeing us. The stream along the side of the road is almost bone dry and plants are rarely seen across the fields.
Finally we arrive at our destination: the oasis (绿洲) is Samong Farm. By the gates, a group of 10-year-old children are having a marble competition. We’re greeted by the shouts of “Cha, cha (short for ‘teacher’)!” from several other kids gathering round. As we climb out of our vehicle, the sun is already hot and the oasis is as dry as the fields surrounding it. In such conditions you would imagine life to be hard, but you wouldn’t know it to see the warm smiles and hear the laughter of the residents at Samong Orphanage.
Compared to children in the Western world, they have little and yet they give so much in generosity of spirit and enthusiasm for every day. Despite the journey, it is so good to arrive and work in the morning.
24.Where was the author going?
A.To Samong Orphanage. B.To a maze of concrete buildings.
C.To the capital of Cambodia. D.To the centre of Phnom Penh.
25.What word can be used to describe Kivi?
A.Disciplined. B.Skillful. C.Devoted. D.Ambitious.
26.What can be inferred from Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A.Samong farm is a wealthy and developed rural area.
B.It has rich water resources and thick plants along the road.
C.The local children are curious and friendly to strangers.
D.The road to the orphanage is smooth and easy to travel.
27.What can we learn from the story?
A.Enthusiasm from the children. B.Comfort of riding a motorbike.
C.Beauty of working in the morning. D.Pleasure of being part of a new culture.
C
The idea of growing food in a desert would make most people laugh but this is quickly becoming a reality. There are currently two desert farms in the world where quality vegetables are being planted cheaply and easily.
Sundrop farms, based in South Australia, uses experimental greenhouses to grow tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. The biggest challenge of growing food in a desert, obviously, is the lack of available water. The researchers at Sundrop farms have gotten around this problem by using the sun to desalinate (淡化) sea water. It can also be used to control the temperature of the greenhouses.
Without depending on limited resources such as land and fresh water, Sundrop farms has made farming a practice. This can increase the world’s food supplies. Another benefit of this kind of farming is that it can be done anywhere, thus reducing the costs of transporting food to distant locations. Furthermore, it reduces the need for pesticides (杀虫剂).
Another experimental desert farm is the Sahara Forest Project, which began in Qatar in 2012. Greenhouses in the farm are cooled by salt water. Solar power and other technologies are used together to help make vegetation (植被) grow in the desert environment. As deserts have expanded over recent years around the world due to global warming, this project could solve the problem.
The result from the Qatar project was better than expected and in June of 2014, Jordan agreed to host another one. This will be much bigger than the Qatar project and the project members will have even more opportunities to test their experiments on a much larger scale. It is not clear yet that desert farming represents the future of farming but these projects have shown some success in the field.
28.What does the underlined part “this problem” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Sea water is hard to purify. B.Desert farms aren’t fit to plant vegetables.
C.The temperature is high in the desert. D.The desert is in shortage of available water.
29.Which one is the character of desert farming?
A.It saves delivery costs. B.It needs more pesticides.
C.It has a location limit. D.It solves food waste problems.
30.What can we know about the Sahara Forest Project?
A.It is beyond expectations.
B.It can help produce more salt.
C.It is started to prevent global warming.
D.It uses technology to produce salt water.
31.What can be inferred about desert farming from the last paragraph?
A.It still has problems to solve.
B.It represents the future of farming.
C.Its early success has aroused interest in it.
D.Its aim is to create more job opportunities.

A new museum of laughter — the HaHaHouse — in the Croatian capital Zagreb has opened to the public recently. 43-year-old Andrea Golubic is the museum’s creator. The idea “came straight from the heart”. She finished designing many of the museum elements in one day: “That’s how the HaHaHouse began.” Golubic said a picture of her when she was a seven-year-old inspired (启发) her to build such a museum. “I was often making jokes as a kid,” she added.
As visitors step inside, a light soft white smoke surrounds them — and their first joy is waiting: a playful button near the entrance, inviting them to “wash away negativity (消极)” to kick off their journey. With a quick press, a strange sound effect rings out, as if blowing away worries in a second.
From there, they move down a winding slide and land in a bright, open space filled with soft little white balls — the balls make a light rustling sound when stepped on, and laughter can be heard around, perfectly matching the joyful tone set by the button. This is just the start of the museum’s eight interactive (互动) areas, where surprises appear at every turn; one area houses a large number of chickens singing cheerfully, while others invite visitors to dive deeper into laughter-filled moments.
Golubic said the HaHaHouse is suitable for everyone from small children to older people. Adults get a good excuse to act like a child. All those who still feel a bit of childish joy and hug their inner child will recharge themselves.
Last week, Bruno Dadic, a retired worker, spent a whole afternoon at the HaHaHouse. “Life can never have too much humor — this place feels like a much-needed breath of fresh air for the spirit. Laughter is a medicine for the soul, after all,” he shared, adding that he’s already looking forward to finding his way back for more.
32.What gave Golubic the idea to build the HaHaHouse?
A.A suggestion from her friend. B.Her love for making jokes.
C.A photo from her childhood. D.Her early trips to museums.
33.Why did Golubic set up the HaHaHouse?
A.To help visitors let go of their stress.
B.To offer visitors a chance to interact.
C.To make more money to support those in need.
D.To hold the largest number of model chickens in Croatia.
34.What is Bruno Dadic’s attitude towards the HaHaHouse?
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful.
C.Uncaring. D.Unclear.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The Purpose of Museums Has Changed
B.Laughter Is the Best Medicine for Humans
C.Modern Life Is Becoming Increasingly Challenging
D.A Museum of Laughter Can Solve Bad Feelings

Many people travel to enrich and enjoy themselves. As Persian poet Jalaluddin Rumi said: “Travel brings power and love back into your life.” 36 . Lonely Planet and Forbes listed their top trends of 2019. Here, we have picked out three of them for you. Let’s take a look.
Augmented (增强的) attractions
37 . But virtual reality and augmented reality, or VR and AR, are giving more possibilities to “travel” for little cost. With ever-improving (不断改善的) headsets, smartphones and WiFi connections, technologies have changed the way we travel, bringing the 360-degree experience of museums, theme parks and historical sites to our homes.
Solo travel
Which style do you prefer, travel on your own or with family and friends? Traditionally, travel seems to be a group activity to have fun together and avoid loneliness. But this year, travelling alone has become popular, especially among young people. Travelling on your own means that you are the boss of everything. 38 . Travelling in a totally foreign land on your own can be unique.
39
There are always some “must-see” spots anywhere you travel. Paris’ Louvre Museum is an example. However, in order to avoid the crowds, many like to visit less famous places after searching online or following local guides in 2019. With less transportation and fewer things to do, wandering around the town lets people slow down and notice the little things. 40 . What better way to enjoy the scenery?
A.Taking an unusual path
B.Visiting “must-see” sites
C.World travel can be expensive
D.However, their travel methods may be different each year
E.Travel is a way to broaden our horizons, which benefits us a lot
F.Go hiking, ride a bike, drink a cup of coffee, take a deep breath and explore

In recent years, the combination of Western and Chinese cultures has become a fascinating phenomenon. Take food as an example: many restaurants now serve dishes like “Peking duck tacos”, 56 combines crispy duck with Mexican tortillas. Such creations show how cooking styles 57 (mix) to create something new.
Festival celebrations also reflect this mix. During Christmas, some Chinese families hang red lanterns alongside Christmas trees, while 58 Spring Festival marches in Western cities often include lion dances. Young people even send electronic red envelopes via apps, 59 (keep) the tradition alive 60 a modern way.
Art is another field where cultures meet. Chinese ink wash painting has inspired Western artists, 61 some pop songs use traditional instruments like the guzheng. Fashion designers often mix eastern patterns with western ones, creating 62 (beauty) clothing that appeals to global audiences.
As the world grows more 63 (connect), the mixing of cultures is not just a trend but a necessity. It allows us to appreciate other customs while keeping our own 64 (tradition). In this way, cultural integration becomes a bridge 65 (build) understanding between nations.

“Good for you,” said the middle-aged woman in the swimsuit as I walked by. “I see you out here swimming, practicing hard every day.” I smiled politely and thanked her.
It was mid-August and she was probably the fifth or sixth person in that summer to make this type of comment (评论) on me. I was one of a handful of people who went to the lake almost every day to swim and I’d never heard anyone praise the other swimmers. If I had to guess, I would say that no one would have commented if I had weighed 120 pounds. But as someone who weighed more than twice that, I was sure I stood out. More than likely these people were well meaning, but whenever someone would say “Good for you” or “Way to go”, I would hear “Wow... you’re pretty active for a ‘fat’ girl!”
A few summers before, these types of comments would have upset me a lot more. Actually, a few summers before I would even have considered not swimming at that lake. It was not that I wouldn’t have loved to. Ever since I was old enough to walk, the water was my favorite place. When I was young, my parents would take me to the lake, and I always got angry when other kids wanted me to play in the sand or on the playground. We had this huge body of water to play in. Why would we want to be on the shore? At that age, I wasn’t embarrassed to be seen in a swimsuit as a fat kid, but there were other fat kids. It didn’t seem to matter.
As I grew up, I was more self-conscious I would still enjoy a swim, but I was quick to reach for a cover-up or a towel to wrap around myself as soon as I came out from the water. Even in regular clothes, I sometimes felt self-conscious — like everyone was looking at how big I was and silently judging me. It was a little easier when I was around the people that I trusted. My friend Mary, had a pool in her back yard and sometimes she strongly advised me to go for a swim.

17.Where did the speaker volunteer during her gap year?
A.At a national park. B.At a diving center. C.At a school.
18.How did the speaker mostly contact her family?
A.By writing letters.
B.By posting blogs.
C.By making phone calls.
19.What was the speaker’s unexpected challenge?
A.The language. B.The food. C.The weather.
20.What is the speaker’s opinion on taking a gap year?
A.Beneficial. B.Difficult. C.Necessary.
【答案】17.B 18.B 19.C 20.A
W: I’m glad to be here to talk about my gap year, which took place over two decades ago. I decided to go to the island of Bali. I really wanted to volunteer at a national park, but I was too late to apply so I went for a job at a diving center. This turned out to be better than what I considered, like helping in a school.
When it comes to packing, obviously you need your travel documents, your phone and charger. Then think about any medicine you might need. How did I stay in touch with family? When I first arrived, I wrote a letter every week. They took at least four weeks to arrive though. Then, when I met someone else who had a blog, I realized that that’s the thing to do. A phone call is nice, but the time difference can make that difficult.
There are lots of things you’ll need to adapt to when you’re in another country. The language of course. But luckily, so many people speak English. And I knew I’d struggle with the hot food. I hadn’t realized the effect the climate would have on us, though. Generally speaking, I really enjoyed my time away. It’s a good way to make friends, and you gain confidence too.
A
Still seeking a destination for your holiday?

【答案】24.A 25.B 26.C 27.A

As we climb out of our vehicle, the sun is already hot and the oasis is as dry as the fields surrounding it. In such conditions you would imagine life to be hard, but you wouldn’t know it to see the warm smiles and hear the laughter of the residents at Samong Orphanage.(终于,我们抵达了目的地:这片绿洲就是萨蒙农场。 故选A项。

【答案】32.C 33.A 34.A 35.D

With less transportation and fewer things to do, wandering around the town lets people slow down and notice the little things. 故选A。
40.上文“With less transportation and fewer things to do, wandering around the town lets people slow down and notice the little things.

Thank you for your listening!
Dear teachers and classmates
Hello, everyone, I’m Li Hua. I am honored to speak on the topic of animal protection on the World Animal Day .
As we all know, many animals are facing serious threats, such as habitat loss and illegal hunting, which have caused numerous species toward extinction. With the aim of protecting them, not only do we reduce the use of plastics to keep their homes clean, but also refuse to buy wildlife products and support nature reserves. What is most significant is that we should call on people to raise their awareness of animal protection.
Let’s take action now! Together, we can build a kinder and safer world for all living beings.
Thank you for your listening!

One hot summer day, my heart was becoming cold as I pulled into Dirk’s driveway.

Hearing her words, I found a huge burn mark running through her entire back.

One hot summer day, my heart was becoming cold as I pulled into Dirk’s driveway. Her sweet and thin sister, Casey, was there. When Mary and Casey were ready to get in the pool, I still didn’t get changed. Mary, always the straight talker, rolled her eyes and looked at her sister. “She doesn’t want to be in front of you in her swimsuit.” she told her. Casey thought for a while and walked over to me, saying, “There is nothing we should fear. Look at my back.”
Hearing her words, I found a huge burn mark running through her entire back. She smiled and said that there was nothing that should be hidden. And then she jumped into the pool and swam slowly with the mark appearing and disappearing. For years I had been avoiding my favorite activity in front of others because I was afraid of the way other people would look at me. However, Casey’s sincere smile and words encouraged me. I got changed and joined them. A few weeks later, I got up the courage to go to the lake and I kept swimming there every day.

②跳进泳池:jump into the pool/dive into the pool
③避免:avoid/shun/keep away from
