Best Christmas Events in the US
The Polar Express (Branson, Missouri)
This train ride is one of the most classic experiences that families can have during the holiday season. Rather than wait in lines or wander below fancy light displays, families actually board the Polar Express and cruise (乘船游览) the Branson Scenic Byway. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Disney (Orlando, Florida)
Nobody throws a family-friendly party quite like Disney. Over the Christmas season, Disney World hosts a range of parties for guests. They run from 7 pm until midnight on select days starting in November, giving you time to plan ahead. The show includes a fireworks (烟花) show, parade, character meet-and-greets, fake snowfall, and special holiday drinks and treats.
Natchitoches Christmas Festival (Natchitoches, Louisiana)
As one of the lesser-known family-friendly Christmas events in the US, Natchitoches lets you escape the crowds without skimping on the fun. This unique festival period runs from November until January 6. The small town is decked out in vibrant Christmas decorations and light displays, which transform the downtown historic district.
Every Saturday, hundreds gather for a mini-festival. Families can take part in the fun with a range of children’s activities. When night comes, the mood shifts as live musicians take the stage and a small fireworks show lights up the night.
Gingerbread Village (Seattle, Washington)

Hakobyan Aleta, a 30-year-old English teacher from Armenia, has fallen in love with Chinese shadow puppetry (皮影戏) and made it a way to share Chinese culture with the world.
Coming to China three years ago, Aleta has traveled to many places and been deeply fascinated by Chinese folklore and mythology. She once watched a shadow play show in a Xi’an’s museum, which inspired her to find a unique way to tell Chinese folk tales. Using a big box as a stage, a lamp as a light source, and a piece of white paper as a screen, she made a simple shadow play stage by herself, learning from online videos.
Different from traditional shadow puppets (人偶) made of animal skins, Aleta uses paper to make hers. She prints puppet figures on paper, then cuts and carves them into neat silhouettes (剪影) with great care. Her first shadow play was based on a Chinese love legend related to the Mid-Autumn Festival, and she spent the whole holiday preparing it. To enrich her stories, she keeps learning Chinese traditional culture — legends, customs, and ancient poetry all become her inspiration. For example, when creating shadow plays about Qixi Festival or the beast Nian, she studied related cultural background to help audiences understand the stories better.
Aleta has uploaded her shadow play videos online, which have gained much attention. Her video about the beast Nian even was aired (播放) by an Armenian television station. Many viewers said her videos helped them know more about Chinese culture and hoped for more updates. Encouraged by this, she is now working on a new shadow play with ancient Chinese poetry. She also plans to create videos about Armenian myths (神话) in Chinese when her Chinese improves, to share her own country’s culture with Chinese audiences.
Chinese shadow puppetry, a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage since 2011, has become a beautiful bridge for Aleta to connect Chinese and Armenian cultures.
4. According to the text, how did Aleta learn to make a shadow play stage?
A. By taking a professional course in a Xi’an’s museum.
B. By following instructions from online videos.
C. By studying traditional methods from Armenian artists.
D. By experimenting with different materials on her own.
5. How is the passage organized?
A. By presenting problems and providing solutions.
B. By comparing and contrasting different cultures.
C. By following the order of time and events.
D. By listing arguments and supporting evidence.
6. What can we infer from Aleta’s plan to create videos about Armenian myths in Chinese?
A. She believes Armenian myths are more attractive than Chinese stories.
B. She wants to completely shift her focus from Chinese to Armenian culture.
C. She aims to promote cultural exchange between China and Armenia.
D. She has already mastered the Chinese language at a high level.
7. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the detailed process of making traditional shadow puppets.
B. To introduce a foreigner using shadow puppetry for cultural exchange.
C. To discuss the importance of protecting traditional cultural heritage.
D. To compare differences between Chinese and Armenian folk cultures.
B 5. C 6. C 7. B

根据第二段的句子“Using a big box as a stage, a lamp as a light source, and a piece of white paper as a screen, she made a simple shadow play stage by herself, learning from online videos. (她用一个大箱子当舞台,一盏灯当光源,一张白纸当屏幕,跟着网络视频自己做了一个简单的皮影戏台。)”可知,她是跟着网络视频的教程学习的。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。 根据第二段的句子“Coming to China three years ago, Aleta has traveled to many places and been deeply fascinated by Chinese folklore and mythology. She once watched a shadow play show in a Xi’an’s museum, which inspired her to find a unique way to tell Chinese folk tales.(Aleta三年前来到中国,游历了很多地方,对中国的民间传说和神话深深着迷。她曾在西安的一家博物馆观看皮影戏表演,这激发了她寻找一种独特的方式来讲述中国民间故事。)”、第三段的句子“Her first shadow play was based on a Chinese love legend related to the Mid-Autumn Festival, and she spent the whole holiday preparing it.(她的第一部皮影戏是根据一个与中秋节有关的中国爱情传说改编的,她花了整个假期来准备。)”、第四段的句子“Aleta has uploaded her shadow play videos online, which have gained much attention. Her video about the beast Nian even was aired (播放) by an Armenian television station.(Aleta在网上上传了她的皮影戏视频,引起了很多关注。她关于年兽的视频甚至被亚美尼亚电视台播放过。)”和第五段的句子“Encouraged by this, she is now working on a new shadow play with ancient Chinese poetry.(受此鼓舞,她现在正在创作一部新的中国古诗词皮影戏。)”

Like many researchers who study how people find their way, David is bad at navigating. “When I was 13, I got lost on a Boy Hike for two and a half days,” says the Northwestern University scientist. He’s still poor at finding his way. Many people are like David, while others always know exactly where they are and how to get to their destination.
The importance of a person’s environment is shown by a recent research at the role of genetics in navigation (导航). In 2020, Margherita Malanchini, a developmental psychologist at Queen Mary University of London, and her colleagues compared the performance of more than 2,600 identical (同卵的) and nonidentical twins as they navigated through a virtual environment, to see if navigation ability is passed down in families, showing the role of genetics.
Hugo Spiers, a cognitive neuroscientist (认知神经科学家) at University College London, led a large experiment to find out how experience and cultural factors influence wayfinding skills. Working with T-Mobile company, his team created a game called Sea Hero Quest for phones and computers. In the game, players sail through a virtual environment to find a series of checkpoints. Now, only invited researchers can let new people join the game.
The study found an individual’s life experience and some cultural factors are linked to navigation skills. People from Nordic countries are slightly better at navigating, maybe because orienteering — a sport mixing cross-country running and navigation — is popular there. Life experience also matters a lot. Nordic countries, for example, where gender (性别) equality is greatest, show almost no gender difference in navigation. In contrast, men far outperform women in places where women face cultural limitation on exploring their environment on their own, such as Middle Eastern countries.
8. Why did the author mention the story of David?
A. To give example. B. To make contrast.
C. To make a summary. D. To introduce the topic.
9. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Sea Hero Quest is currently open to all new players.
B. Hugo Spiers leads T-Mobile company to make the experiment.
C. Experience and other cultural factors might affect wayfinding skills.
D. The participants are required to locate a series of checkpoints on the spot.
10. Why are people from Nordic countries generally better at navigation?
A. They participate more in orienteering sports.
B. They have superior genetic features for navigation.
C. They combine cross-country running and navigation.
D. They receive better education in geography.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain why some people are poor navigators like David.
B. To discuss the influence of genetics and environment on navigation skills.
C. To introduce the development of the game Sea Hero Quest.
D. To compare navigation abilities between men and women worldwide.
D 9. C 10. A 11. B
根据第一段“Like many researchers who study how people find their way, David is bad at navigating. “When I was 13, I got lost on a Boy Hike for two and a half days,” says the Northwestern University scientist. He’s still poor at finding his way. Many people are like David, while others always know exactly where they are and how to get to their destination.(和许多研究人类如何找到方向的学者一样,大卫在导航方面表现不佳。这位来自西北大学的科学家说:“在我13岁的时候,我在一次童子军徒步活动中迷路了两天半。”他至今仍然不太擅长辨别方向。许多人和大卫一样,而另一些人则总是能清楚地知道自己所处的位置以及如何到达目的地)”可知,作者通过这个故事引出了文章要讨论的核心话题——人类的导航能力及其影响因素。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Hugo Spiers, a cognitive neuroscientist at University College London, led a large experiment to find out how experience and cultural factors influence wayfinding skills.(伦敦大学学院的认知神经科学家胡格·斯皮尔斯领导了一项大型实验,旨在探究经验和文化因素如何影响方向辨别能力)”可知,该实验的目的是探究经验和文化因素如何影响寻路技能。
故选A。
根据第一段“Like many researchers who study how people find their way, David is bad at navigating. “When I was 13, I got lost on a Boy Hike for two and a half days,” says the Northwestern University scientist. He’s still poor at finding his way. Many people are like David, while others always know exactly where they are and how to get to their destination.(和许多研究人类如何找到方向的学者一样,大卫在导航方面表现不佳。

A team of international scientists from China, Germany and the United States has found an important set of dinosaur footprints in Wucha Village, Renhuai City, Guizhou Province. Their findings were published in the Journal of Asian Earth Sciences, showing the area was a lakeshore sandbar (湖岸沙洲) in the Early Jurassic period, home to various dinosaur groups.
Renhuai is a key region for Early Jurassic dinosaur fossils in southern China. Many sauropod (蜥脚类动物) tracks have been found there before, but systematic records of multiple dinosaur groups living together are scarce. From 2020 to 2024, researchers found several vertebrate (脊椎动物) track sites near Wucha Village.
Xing Lida, an associate professor, said the Wucha track records sauropods, theropods and basal ornithischians living together. The largest sauropod track is 60 cm long, similar to those found in the Sichuan Basin. Some small basal ornithischian footprints have a stride (步幅) of only 6-7 cm but long step lengths, meaning these dinosaurs were likely running.
A set of two-digit footprints drew special attention. The team thinks tridactyl dinosaurs left them while running or kicking, not true two-digit dinosaurs. This finding helps identify early deinonychosaur tracks and offers new reference for similar “suspected two-digits prints” worldwide.
Xing added the discovery enriches research on Early Jurassic dinosaur fauna in Guizhou. Renhuai is expected to become a key window to study dinosaur activity in China during the Early Jurassic. The footprints are kept at their original sites.
12. What can we learn about the findings?
A. The discovered area reveals a lakeshore environment for diverse dinosaur groups.
B. Scientists found the largest sauropod footprint in Guizhou, China.
C. The Wucha Village has become the most important site for dinosaur research in the world.
D. All dinosaur footprints found in Guizhou have been moved to museums for protection.
13. What does the underlined word “scarce” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. typical B. valuable C. common D. rare
14. According to the text, what can be inferred about the small basal ornithischian dinosaurs?
A. They were probably moving quickly.
B. They had the largest footprints.
C. They lived alone without other species.
D. They were the most common dinosaurs in the area.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Mystery of Wucha Village, Renhuai City
B. The History of Dinosaur Footprint Research
C. Scientists’ Discovery of Important Early Jurassic Dinosaur Tracks
D. How to Research Dinosaur Activity
A 13. D 14. A 15. C
根据第一段中的“Their findings were published in the Journal of Asian Earth Sciences, showing the area was a lakeshore sandbar in the Early Jurassic period, home to various dinosaur groups.(他们的研究成果发表在《亚洲地球科学杂志》上,该研究表明该区域在早侏罗世时期为湖岸沙洲,是多种恐龙类群的栖息地。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段中的“Many sauropod (蜥脚类动物) tracks have been found there before, but systematic records of multiple dinosaur groups living together are scarce. (此前该地已发现许多蜥脚类恐龙足迹,但关于多种恐龙类群共生的系统记录却十分scarce。)”可知,句中存在转折关系,前文说发现诸多单一恐龙足迹,后文应指多种恐龙共生的系统记录数量少,因此,划线单词的含义是“稀有的”,与D项意义相近。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Some small basal ornithischian footprints have a stride (步幅) of only 6-7 cm but long step lengths, meaning these dinosaurs were likely running. (一些小型基础鸟臀目恐龙的足迹步幅仅6至7厘米,但步长却较长,这意味着这些恐龙当时或许正在奔跑。)”可知,这些小型基础鸟臀目恐龙可能正快速移动。故选A项。

Mary had been a shy girl ever since she was a little kid. The thought of being the center of attention would make her heart race and cheeks burn bright red. She’d always sit in the back row of classrooms, keeping her head down during group activities and nodding silently when teachers asked questions — even if she knew the answers perfectly. Entering senior high school didn’t ease her anxiety; the unfamiliar campus, crowded hallways, and dozens of new faces only made her nervous.
That was until she met Rose. Rose was like a ray of sunshine breaking through dark clouds —outgoing, energetic, and always brimming with laughter. From the moment they sat next to each other in their first English class, Rose had chatted happily with Mary. At first, Mary could only respond with short, awkward sentences, but Rose never seemed to mind and encouraged her to be more confident. In English class, Mary would watch in admiration as Rose raised her hand enthusiastically, answering the teacher’s questions fluently and confidently, her eyes shining with passion. She secretly wished she could be half as brave as her friend, but the fear of speaking in front of others always held her back.
One Thursday morning, their English teacher walked into the classroom with a bright smile. “Today, we’re going to have a surprise 3-minute speech activity,” she announced, holding up a small box filled with slips (纸条) of paper. “Each slip has a classmate’s name on it. I’ll randomly (随机地) pick one, and the lucky person will share his or her thoughts on ‘the most precious friendship in my life’.” Mary’s heart skipped a beat, praying silently that her name wouldn’t be called. The teacher shook the box gently, then reached in and pulled out a slip of paper. All the noise in the classroom seemed to fade away, and the only sound she could hear was the pounding of her own heart. Then, the teacher’s voice echoed through the room: “Mary!”
In an instant, Mary froze. Her face turned pale, and her hands started trembling uncontrollably. She turned her head slightly and saw Rose looking at her with a warm, encouraging smile. “You can do it, Mary,” Rose whispered softly, holding her hand gently. “I believe in you. Just speak from your heart.”

Paragraph 1: Mary took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. Rose’s encouraging whisper still echoed in her ears, and that warm smile gave her the courage to stand up shakily. Gripping the podium to steady her trembling hands, she searched for her voice — at first faint and hesitant, but as she thought about the countless after-class talks, Rose’s patient listening, and the way her friend had pulled her out of loneliness, confidence quietly bloomed. She spoke sincerely about their friendship, how Rose had become her first true friend in senior high and taught her to believe in herself. With each sentence, her voice grew clearer, and she even managed to meet Rose’s eyes, returning her bright smile.
Paragraph 2: As the last word fell from Mary’s mouth, the classroom burst into cheers. Rose jumped up, cheering loudly and waving her hands excitedly. The English teacher nodded with a proud smile, praising her for the heartfelt sharing. Mary bowed slightly, her cheeks flushed not with shyness but with joy. When she sat down, Rose pulled her into a tight hug: “You were incredible!” At that moment, Mary realized that courage wasn’t about being fearless, but about moving forward despite fear. Rose’s constant encouragement had helped her find her voice, and this speech was just the start — she was ready to step out of her shell and embrace more possibilities.

The Polar Express (Branson, Missouri)
This train ride is one of the most classic experiences that families can have during the holiday season.
For around 30 years, the Gingerbread Village has been a local favorite at Christmastime. This light display includes larger-than-life art installations that families can walk through. With multiple exhibits and various themes, the show usually covers a range of holiday themes.

12 What can we learn about the findings?
