High school, for most teenagers, is a space where new adventures and challenges begin. I clearly remember my first day of high school. As I entered the school gate, I was greeted by a crowd of students. The hallways were filled with talking and laughter. It was a lot to handle, and I felt like a tiny fish in a vast ocean. I held my schedule tightly, trying to find the right classroom. My heart raced as I was scared of getting lost.
My first class was English, and as I walked in. I spotted familiar faces from my previous school. I breathed a sigh of relief as I took my seat, surrounded by friendly smiles. My English teacher, Mrs Johnson, introduced herself and made everyone feel comfortable. She explained what we would be studying during the semester and encouraged us to share our thoughts and ideas. The next class was math, which happened to be my weakest subject. I had a tight feeling in my stomach as I entered the classroom, but my math teacher, Mr Smith, turned out to be very patient. He promised us that we would learn and improve together. His words of support made me feel more relaxed, and I began to believe that I could overcome my math struggles.
During lunchtime, I sat with a group of students who quickly became my friends. We shared stories and talked about our expectations for high school. It was during this time that I realized that high school wasn’t just about academic subjects; it was also about building friendships and making lasting memories.
The rest of the day flew by with a variety of classes, faces, and experiences. My first day of high school was filled with moments of anxiety, joy, and the promise of new beginnings.

6. How did the author feel when entering the math class?

7. What did the author learn from the first day of high school?
A. High school is only about studying hard.
B. Making friends is more important than studying.

D. High school is about both study and friendship-building.

In case you are considering starting a journey, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
First of all, always check and double-check departure (出发) time. It is surprising how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10:50, but the person at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have some local money in cash (现金). Once I arrived at a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi but because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. “Listen! I only take real money!” the driver said angrily. You can imagine how terrible I felt at that moment.
The third and the last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who traveled in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.
8. Where is the author most probably from?
A. Britain. B. The USA. C. Italy. D. Greece.
9. What did the author do when he found he had no dollars to pay the taxi driver?
A. He tried to pay by credit card.
B. He offered to pay in pounds.
C. He waited for the bank to open with the driver.
D. He asked the driver to give him a free ride.
10. What’s the weather in London generally like in May?
A. Warm and dry. B. Cold and dry. C. Hot and wet. D. Cool and rainy.
11. What’s the text mainly about?
A. How to make life easier. B. How to ensure safety during your trip.
C. How to be well prepared for a trip. D. How to enjoy ourselves on a trip.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据最后一段中“I feel sorry for some of my workmates who traveled in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.( 我为我的一些同事感到遗憾,他们在5月份,伦敦或曼彻斯特还相当凉爽的时候,穿着厚重的西装和雨衣,前往雅典、罗马或马德里等地,那里的白天已经开始变得相当温暖。)” 故选A项。
根据第三段中“The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi but because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead.( 去旅馆的唯一方法是乘出租车,但因为我没有美元,所以我提出用英镑代替。)”
根据最后一段中“I feel sorry for some of my workmates who traveled in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.( 我为我的一些同事感到遗憾,他们在5月份,伦敦或曼彻斯特还相当凉爽的时候,穿着厚重的西装和雨衣,前往雅典、罗马或马德里等地,那里的白天已经开始变得相当温暖。)”
根据文章大意以及第一段“In case you are considering starting a journey, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.( 如果你正在考虑开始旅行,这里有一些简单的规则,可以让你在旅行前后的生活更轻松。)”
D
Studies have found that having lots of friends helps us feel happier. But sometimes we stop talking to friends we used to be close with.
Scientists did seven studies with about 2,500 people. They wanted to know how people feel about getting back in touch with friends they haven’t talked to in a while. They looked at the problems and reasons for reconnecting and if there were ways to help people send a message to old friend.
To see how willing people were to reconnect, the scientists asked them how ready they were to do different things right away. This included calling or texting a friend they hadn’t talked to in a long time. The results showed that people were not very excited about reaching out to an old friend, just like they don’t want to talk to someone new or pick up trash.
People were worried that their old friends might not want to hear from them. It might be weird to reconnect after so long, and they felt bad. They thought both they and their old friends were too busy to talk again.
People thought there were only a few good reasons to get in touch, like saying happy birthday to a friend. Talking about a memory they shared was the second reason. They didn’t like the idea of asking an old friend for help.
A scientist said that even though people were warned about how an old friend would react to their message, the help they offered to ease this worry didn’t really work well. The scientist added that we know from many years of research that friends make us happy and give our lives meaning. These research findings will encourage people to send a message to someone they miss. It will be the first step to establish contact with friends they have not communicated with for a long period.
12. What is the main focus of the scientists’ research?
A. The benefits of maintaining friendships.
B. The process of forming new friendships.
C. The feelings about reconnecting with old friendships.
D. The reasons for losing contact with long-lost friends.
13. What did the scientists find out about people’s willingness to reconnect with old friends?
A. Most people wanted to reconnect.
B. People were not sure about contacting old friends.
C. People liked to ask old friends for help.
D. Being busy was the main reason for not making contact.
14. What does the underlined word “weird” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Strange. B. Interesting. C. Fashionable. D. Fresh.
15. What was found to help people contact old friends?
A. Sending a message to ask for a favor.
B. Focusing on the guilt of not reaching out.
C. Expressing concerns over the message reception.
D. Practicing social connection with current friends first.
C 13. B 14. A 15. A
根据第二段“Scientists did seven studies with about 2,500 people. They wanted to know how people feel about getting back in touch with friends they haven’t talked to in a while.(科学家们对大约2500人进行了7项研究。他们想知道人们与许久未联系的朋友重新取得联系时的感受)”可知,科学家们研究的主要焦点是与旧朋友重新联系的感觉。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The results showed that people were not very excited about reaching out to an old friend, just like they don’t want to talk to someone new or pick up trash.(研究结果表明,人们对联系老朋友并不是很兴奋,就像他们不想和陌生人说话或捡垃圾一样)”可知,关于人们与老朋友重新联系的意愿,科学家们发现人们不确定是否要联系老朋友。
根据划线词后文“to reconnect after so long(在这么久之后重新联系)”以及“and they felt bad. They thought both they and their old friends were too busy to talk again.(他们感觉很糟糕。 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“People thought there were only a few good reasons to get in touch, like saying happy birthday to a friend. Talking about a memory they shared was the second reason. They didn’t like the idea of asking an old friend for help.(人们认为只有几个好的理由来联系,比如对朋友说一声生日快乐。谈论他们共同的记忆是第二个理由。他们不喜欢向老朋友求助)”以及最后一段“These research findings will encourage people to send a message to someone they miss. It will be the first step to establish contact with friends they have not communicated with for a long period.(这些研究结果将鼓励人们给他们想念的人发信息。这将是他们与长期没有联系的朋友建立联系的第一步)”可知,人们不喜欢向老朋友求助,以此作为不联系的理由,而研究结果鼓励人们给老朋友发信息,故可推知,发信息请求帮忙可以帮助人们联系老朋友。故选A。
How Well Do You Know Yourself?

Identify what you value about yourself.

____19____
What makes your eyes light up? This will tell you where you obtain your true joy. It could be when you are performing a dance on stage, when you help your dad fix that bug in his computer, or even when you are doing research on your school science project.
Ask yourself who you want to be.
What is your true purpose in life? Who or what do you want to be, really? As you go about your daily activities, ask yourself these questions to gain an understanding into your true self. ____20____
The self-discovery journey is not a finite one. In fact, it is constantly evolving. As Ariana Huffington said, “The journey toward self-discovery is life’s greatest adventure.”
A. Know what your strength is.
B. Know what makes you excited.
C. It won’t be difficult for you to answer these questions.

G. This will give you an insight into the personal values or abilities you hold dear.
E 17. G 18. D 19. B 20. F
根据空前内容“We often hear of people who make long journeys to different parts of the world. (我经常听说有人长途旅行到各地)”以及空后内容“Having an insight into your true self helps you feel more confident and at peace with yourself. (对真实的自己有洞察会让你更自信、更平和)”可知,空前提到的长途旅行和空后提到对自己的洞察,中间缺少过渡句,故E项“然而一个人能进行的最大的旅途是在自己的内心”可以连接上下句子,起到承上启下的作用。故选E。
【17题详解】
根据本段小标题“Identify what you value about yourself(识别你看中自己的哪些方面)”及本段首句“what do you most like about yourself, something you are proud of?(你最喜欢自己, 最引以为傲的是自己的哪个方面?)” 故G项“This will give you an insight into the personal values or abilities you hold dear. (这会给你一个洞察力了解你所珍视的个人价值或能力)”中This指代上文“Know what you most like about yourself, something you are proud of”。
根据空后内容“However, in order to discover yourself, you will need to put yourself in some uncomfortable situations. (然而为了发现自己,你需要把自己处于一个不舒适的环境中)”可知,此处和空后内容是转折关系。D项“在熟悉的地方总是比较舒服”符合语境。故选D。
【19题详解】
根据本段内容“What makes your eyes light up? This will tell you where you obtain your true joy. It could be when you are performing a dance on stage, when you help your dad fix that bug in his computer, or even when you are doing research on your school science project.(什么让你的眼睛发亮?这将告诉你从哪里获得真正的快乐。它可能是当你在舞台上表演舞蹈时,当你帮你爸爸修理电脑漏洞时,甚至当你在做学校科学项目的研究时)”可知,本段主要讲述的是从生活中的哪些方面可以获得真正的快乐。B选项“知道什么能让你兴奋”最符合语境。故选B。
【20题详解】
根据本段小标题“Ask yourself who you want to be. (问你自己想成为什么样的人)”可知, 本段主要内容为通过自我发问的方式探寻自我。根据空前内容“ask yourself these questions to gain an understanding into your true self(问你自己这些问题以获取对真我的理解)”可知,本句与上句承接,说明这么做的原因。

When Emily and John prepared to go home, Emily noticed the phone. She quickly told John. “It must be the young lady’s phone.” Join looked at the phone which took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. John had always wanted a phone, but his parents didn’t agree.
John stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, “I want to take the phone.” Emily could not believe her ears. She shouted at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?” However, John grabbed the phone and ran out of the restaurant quickly.
Upon arriving home, John locked his bedroom door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. He liked it very much and polished it happily.
Before sleep, Emily went into John’s bedroom and said. “John, you can’t keep the phone. Your behavior is wrong. And how will you explain the thing to our parents?” John said. “I will say a friend lent it to me.” “You are lying. Oh, dear! When did you turn so dishonest?” said Emily.
Then Emily saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the phone. “Why don’t we just call this number? The owner must be worried. We can talk to her and ask her to come and take back her phone.” Emily was trying to persuade her brother to change his mind.

Emily was right! The next morning, he found Emily. “I am going to phone the owner,” he told Emily, stressing each word.
Emily was very happy to hear that. They phoned the girl with her house phone number and got through. After being told about her phone, the girl expressed her gratitude repeatedly.

D The reasons for losing contact with long-lost friends.

Last Sunday, Emily and her brother, John, went to a restaurant to have dinner. There were lots of people in the restaurant so they had to share their table with another person, who was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she left in a hurry and left her phone on the table.
