Despite fifteen years of project management experience and a good record, every interview ended the same way: polite thanks, promising follow-up, then silence. One day. Michael walked into the reception area of a giant company. The interviewer, Sarah, seemed different from the start. Instead of asking about his experience managing budgets, she said, “Tell me about a project that taught you something important about yourself.” Michael felt his prepared answers escape him. For a moment, he considered launching into his usual response about successful budget management, but something stopped him. Eight months of the same polished approach, eight months of rejection. Maybe it was time to try something different. Therefore Michael made a surprising choice: to speak from the heart — talking about his biggest failure. Then he found himself talking about the disaster that had almost ended his career five years earlier — a software implementation (实施) that had gone totally wrong. Not because of technical issues, but because he’d failed to recognise that the sales team was terrified of the new system. “I found I’d been managing the project timeline but ignoring the human timeline,” Michael heard himself concluding. “The sales team wasn’t resisting change — they were afraid of looking incompetent in front of their biggest clients during that process. I should have read what the sales team feared and helped them overcome the fear.” Three days later, Sarah called with an offer that included a 20% salary increase. “Michael,” she said, “what convinced us wasn’t your technical experience — plenty of candidates had that. It was how clearly you understood your own value and could explain why it mattered. We could see exactly how you’d contribute to our culture and our success.” The interview hadn’t just changed Michael’s career — it had helped him name and live his true professional philosophy: his value lies in reading what people actually need to succeed and creating the conditions for that success. 4. What does “polite thanks, promising follow-up, then silence” in Paragraph 1 imply? A. Michael didn’t meet their expectations. B. Michael was too particular about his job. C. The interviewers were expecting a follow-up. D. The interviewers were hesitant about the hiring. 5. Why did Michael choose to talk about his biggest failure? A. Sarah asked him to do so. B. Michael wanted to be open and sincere. C. The company valued learning from failure. D. Michael forgot the details of the budget management. 6. According to Sarah what made Michael succeed in the interview? A. Michaels’ contributions to the company. B. Michaels’ understanding of his true value. C. Michaels’ polished preparations for interviews. D. Michaels’ technical experience and qualifications. 7. Which can be the best title for the passage? A. Stepping from Failure to Success B. Tips on Becoming Successful in Job Hunting C. The Value of Technical Experience in Interviews D. The Awakening of One’s Professional Philosophy C Almost one in four of the working-age population in the UK are classified as disabled, with the number continuing to rise. A recent review led by Sir Charlie Mayfield, former chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, revealed a troubling gap: disabled people are twice as likely to be out of work as non-disabled people. Described by charities as “unacceptable”, this nearly 30% employment gap has called for action. Before next week’s UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Mayfield has joined the Disability Charities Association. This association has called on large and small businesses and disability experts to work together to make workplaces more inclusive. Diane Lightfoot, chair of the Disability Charities Association, said, “Many employers want to employ disabled people, but don’t know where to begin.” Official statistics confirm the challenge. A 2024 government survey found just 35% of employers felt confident hiring disabled people. Luckily, some businesses are leading the way. Whitbread runs the Thrive program to support young people with special educational needs and disabilities into work. At Marks & Spencer, 30% of trainees on its long-running Marks & Start scheme have a disability. The four-week program aims to break the “no experience, no job” cycle and of the 12, 000 young people who have taken part, half have gone on to a job with the high-street chain. In practice, employing disabled individuals can bring some unexpected benefits. To begin with, disabled employees are the ones who are very keen to work, who stay longer with the employer and who often make the working environment more productive and pleasant. In addition, disabled staff help employers learn to approach things from different angles which benefit the wider workforce and customers. As Diane Lightfoot puts it, “All of us should and can create meaningful opportunities for disabled people to enter the workforce. An inclusive, diverse workforce is a source of strength for social development.” 8. What does the review led by Sir Charlie Mayfield suggest? A. Disabled workers are twice as productive as others. B. Disabled people face a increasingly higher unemployment rate. C. The total number of disabled individuals is decreasing in the UK. D. Many companies have effective disability employment programs. 9. According to Diane Lightfoot, what is a common challenge for employers? A. A shortage of qualified disabled applicants. B. A lack of government funding for training. C. Rejection from non-disabled staff members. D. Uncertainty about how to launch the hiring. 10. How does hiring disabled employees benefit a business? A. They reduce working hours. B. They attract more customers. C. They increase the business profits. D. They bring different perspectives. 11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To give a brief account of disability rights. B. To list the benefits of disability employment. C. To draw more attention to close the employment gap. D. To honor the experts who support disability employment. D Forever chemicals, or PFAS, are a group of man-made substances that take a very long time to break down in the environment naturally. They’re everywhere. And they are used in hundreds of products, ranging from frying pans and waterproof clothing to firefighting foam, food packaging and stain resistant coatings. Now, a recent study on ducklings suggests forever chemicals might be interfering with the genes of birds before they hatch. Scientists at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) found that the chemicals interfered with the ducklings’ DNA, switching genes on and off in several organs, and potentially damaging their chances of survival. In their study, researchers tested the effects of three different forever chemicals by injecting them into duck eggs. Then, they sealed the eggs with wax and incubated (孵育) them until they hatched. This was done in a controlled lab setting but was intended to imitate the sort of exposure that these eggs might encounter naturally, via their mothers. As soon as the ducklings hatched, the scientists collected samples from their livers and hearts, which play a key role in their immune system. The scientists found that two out of the three forever chemicals had caused genetic changes in the ducklings, affecting genes that regulate their fat metabolism (代谢) . Anne-Fleur Brand, the study’s lead researcher, noted “If their fat metabolism changes, it could reduce their chances of surviving or reproducing.” Surprisingly, the researchers did not observe significant changes in the ducklings’ hearts. The scientists concluded that PFAS may be harming young animals, such as ducklings. and urged that the chemicals be better regulated. Some forever chemicals are banned, but there are thousands of different types which are still in use, and we don’t yet know how they affect us, other animals and the planet. 12. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph? A. By giving a definition. B. By listing statistics. C. By quoting a scientist. D. By making comparisons. 13. What did the scientists at NTNU find about forever chemicals? A. They alter the DNA of ducklings. B. They have no effect on bird genes. C. They affect adult birds, not ducklings. D. They enhance the survival rates of ducklings. 14. Why did the scientists seal the eggs with wax? A. To prevent the eggs from hatching too early. B. To enhance the growth of the ducklings after hatching. C. To protect the eggs from being infected by external bacteria. D. To mimic natural exposure to chemicals through the mother. 15. What did the scientist suggest in the last paragraph? A. PFAS should be banned immediately. B. Regulations for PFAS should be made. C. Researches on ducklings should be forbidden. D. More forever chemicals should be put into use. 第二节 (共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Chongqing, known as “the city of mountains”, is also called “the city of bridges” as it has over 20, 000 bridges. Each day, he saw up to 30 patients. However, he often struggled with his daily schedule as he had to deal with lots of paperwork. It seemed he had spent his whole career taking notes. What’s worse, his wife and two sons complained that he was not truly a family man, because he had spent too many of his evenings and weekends buried under medical notes and reports. Fortunately, a new technology, an AI assistant, changed everything. This digital assistant greatly reduced his workload. It worked silently in the background, listening to doctor-patient conversations. Its job was simple but powerful: it instantly took notes, and wrote medical reports for the doctor. “This technology truly frees me,” Dr. James said gratefully. “All I need to do is ask questions, prescribe medicine and perform operations.” However, a routine eye check-up left Dr. James feeling unsettled one Wednesday afternoon. The patient, a young girl named Sarah, came alone. She came for help because she had noticed her eyesight becoming unclear. As usual, Dr. James conducted an examination of her eyes while his digital assistant did the usual work. Throughout the check-up, Sarah remained mostly quiet, responding either with brief nods or short sentences in a low voice. It seemed she wanted to say something but didn’t dare to speak up. Twenty minutes later, Dr. James prescribed some medicine based on his AI assistant’s medical report. When Sarah was told that an operation had been scheduled, Sarah appeared quite anxious; however, Dr. James didn’t pay enough attention at that moment. The check-up itself seemed smooth. Yet, Sarah’s unwillingness to talk and her hesitation kept lingering in Dr. James’ mind after work. He was so worried that he had a restless night. Perhaps something went unnoticed in the conversation. Perhaps something was missing—something his AI assistant might easily overlook. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: The next morning, the thought troubled him so much that he phoned Sarah. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Three days later, Sarah came for a face-to-face talk as Dr. James suggested. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 海口市2026届高三年级调研考试 英语 注意事项: 1. 1. Dr. James listened attentively, assuring her that her feelings were completely natural and understandable. He then suggested they meet for a face-to-face conversation. Paragraph 2: Three days later, Sarah came for a face-to-face talk as Dr. James suggested. Dr. James showed his care by offering a cup of hot coffee and a warm smile. Moved by that, Sarah opened up and talked about her fear of losing her eyesight. Dr. James patiently explained the operation plan and the potential risk, which helped clear away Sarah’s concerns. When the day of the operation arrived, Sarah felt surprisingly calm and relaxed. The surgery was successful, and she recovered quickly. Dr. James learned an invaluable lesson: while AI can reduce his workload, it is the human connection and care between a doctor and patient that truly make a difference. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
