Different kinds of music change our feelings. Some make us want to sing along. Others make us want to dance. Lullabies (摇篮曲) make babies and young kids feel calm—so calm that they fall asleep quickly!
Though lullabies come from different places, these songs have a lot in common. They usually have short, easy words and simple tunes (曲调). The songs are slow, and people sing them in a soft voice with a calm beat.
Over the years, scientists have studied lullabies to find out more about their calming powers. Research has shown that lullabies can slow a baby’s heart, which is a sign of relaxation. Babies who hear lullabies fall asleep faster and sleep better than those who don’t.
There are a few reasons why lullabies are so calming for babies and others. For one thing, the calm, slow lullabies are similar to the sounds of the mother’s heartbeat and her voice. What’s more, lullabies let a listener know that someone caring for them is nearby. This makes whoever is hearing the songs feel safe. As a result, they’re relaxed.
However, the magic of lullabies doesn’t stop there. According to researchers, the person singing the lullabies gets just as much benefit (好处) as the listener. Singing these songs helps both the listener and the singer. So, if you need some peace, sing or listen to a lullaby.
29. The underlined word “calm” in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”.
A. angry B. excited C. tired D. relaxed
30. What are lullabies like?
A. They have simple tunes and easy words. B. They have difficult words.
C. They are fast with a loud voice. D. They have strong beats.
31. What may happen to babies when they hear lullabies according to the research?
A. They’ll sing along with their mothers. B. They will like to look for their mothers.
C. They may soon fall asleep. D. They will become excited.
32. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Lullabies sound like the father’s heartbeat and voice.
B. Both the singer and the listener can get benefits from lullabies.
C. Only babies can feel safe when listening to lullabies.
D. Singing lullabies is not helpful for people who need peace.

For thousands of years, the mystery of how the pyramids were built in the huge Sahara Desert has left scientists scratching their heads (苦思冥想), but now they think they’ve found the answer.
A team of scientists from the University of North Carolina, USA, believe that 31 of the pyramids, including the famous Great Pyramid of Giza, were probably built along a part of the River Nile that has been lost for a long time.
For years, scientists have thought that ancient Egyptians used a waterway nearby, but Eman Ghoneim, who led the study, says nobody was certain about the location of it.
The team used special technology, historical maps and samples (样本) from the ground to find the hidden part of the River Nile under the sand. They believe this was used to carry heavy stones and tools to build the pyramids. But over time, sandstorms covered it and it dried up.
This hidden part of the River Nile is called “Ahramat”, which means “pyramids” in Arabic. It’s thought it was about 39 miles long and between 200 and 700 meters wide. Before the River Nile got covered in sand, this river was next to the pyramids built between 4,700 and 3,700 years ago.
The team says discovering this lost part of the river helps explain why there are so many pyramids in such a challenging desert place. It’s like solving a big puzzle (不解之谜) from long ago!
33. What mystery do scientists think they’ve solved?
A. Who built the pyramids.
B. When the pyramids were discovered.
C. How the pyramids were built in the desert.
D. What the pyramids were used for in ancient times.
34. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The mysterious waterway. B. The River Nile.
C. The Great Pyramid of Giza. D. The ground samples.
35. The main idea of the passage is ________.

Robot Sharks Are Here to Help
Two sharks were swimming fast in West Lake. Their bodies were dark and shiny, and their fins (鱼鳍) cut through the water like knives. Wait a second—sharks in a lake? How could that be? They are not real sharks, but robots! Their job is to help visitors find lost phones and other things in the water. Let’s hear what their engineer has to say.

A. Lullabies sound like the father’s heartbeat and voice.

【答案】
例文:
Dear Ivan,
You must be excited about coming to China soon. Let me tell you some table manners in China. First, let the elderly start eating first. This shows respect. Second, keep your mouth closed while chewing. It’s polite.
Also, don’t stick chopsticks into your food. It reminds people of a funeral. Don’t reach across the table to get food. Ask someone to pass it to you. If you need to leave early, ask for permission politely.
I hope these tips will help you enjoy Chinese meals. If you have more questions, just ask me.
Yours,
Xiao Wei
