W: But I was told that he comes from the U. S.
Text 2
M:Did you have a good time flying kites in the park with your friends yesterday?

Text 4 M: How much is the ticket to the museum?
W: 16 for adults and half of that for children under 12.
Text 5 M: So, what's the problem, madam?
W: The engine is making a strange sound. Could you take a look at it? I really can't afford a new car now.
M: I'll take a closer look. Don't worry. This car can definitely go for another fifty thousand miles.
Text 6 W: Hello? this is the Greenfield Hotel. What can I do for you?
M: Hello! My name is Bill Brown, and I'd like to make a reservation.
W:Yes, sir.
M: I need a room with two beds for two days.

M: Mark Twain. I've read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer probably four or five times! What about you?
W: I love Henry Miller, but I don't think you've heard of him before.
M: No, I haven't. Tell me something about his books.
W: Well, many of his stories take place in interesting places around the world, like Paris and New York. The characters in his books are also very interesting.
M: What's your favorite thing about his writing?
W: The women in his books are often very intelligent, and that is what I appreciate.
Text 8
M: Pardon me, do you have this style of jeans in another size?
W: Certainly. What size would you like?
M: Well, the large size is too long. I'll try the medium size.
W: Sure. But we only have light blue and gray in medium right now.
M: Oh, I really like the dark blue. But light blue is okay, too. Also, do you have more of this style of shirt in large size? I bought one last time I was here and it fits great.
W: Yes, we have more of those.
M: I prefer dark colors like purple instead of bright colors like yellow or orange.
W: Okay, a purple shirt, and medium jeans. Here you are.
Text 9 M: Hi, Linda. You look anxious. What's going on?
W: Oh, I am worried about my parents in New York. You know? there was a terrible storm there last night.
M: Take it easy. I'm sure your parents are fine.
W: How can you be so sure? I saw many scary images on TV — broken windows ? flooded streets and floating furniture!
M: I know, but nothing serious is reported to have happened so far.
W: But I haven't been able to reach them because of a sudden power failure in that area!
M: Calm down. Last year, Houston also had a terrible storm, and my home in Los Angeles was caught in a big earthquake. The government handled everything successfully, and nobody got hurt.
W: Really? Oh, I feel much better now! Thank you so much.
M: You're welcome.
Text 10
W: Hi, cousin. I haven't seen you since the last year's family gathering. What's new?
M: Well, most recently I started taking some online classes.
W: You're studying more? Haven't you learned enough?
M: No, never. After I finished my finance classes, I thought I should challenge myself with computer programming. So, I'm learning that now in my free time. There's a lot to read. But fortunately all the class books are electronic. They're cheaper, and of course, I can take them anywhere.
W: Don't your eyes get tired from looking at your computer so much? People say electronic books are more convenient because they don't take up any more space. But I just like the feel of turning pages and the experience of a real book. Paper books will always be my favorite.
M: What have you been reading lately?
W: Medical theory and history. I am training to become a nurse. I have a lot to read. It is really tiring, but I don't mind.

根据第一段中“Viral moments like dancing with local children or chatting with street vendors in broken Mandarin contrasted sharply with fixed Western media portrayals, showcasing a lively society where ancient traditions coexist with technological innovation.(与街头孩童共舞、用蹩脚中文和摊贩唠嗑等病毒式传播片段,与西方媒体的固化描述形成鲜明对比,展现出一个传统与科技共舞的生动中国)”可知,IShowSpeed与当地人的互动展示了与西方媒体描述不同的真实中国。故选B项。

根据最后一段中“For many young viewers abroad, his authentic interactions with locals and spontaneous exploration humanized a nation often reduced to political stereotypes.(对于许多国外的年轻观众来说,他与当地人的真实互动和自发探索使一个常被简化为政治刻板印象的国家变得有人情味)”可知,IShowSpeed的中国之旅使中国超越政治刻板印象,变得更有人情味。故选C项。
通读全文,结合第一段中“American internet personality IShowSpeed (Darren Watkins Jr.) recently attracted global audiences with his lively tour of China, visiting Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, and Shenzhen. His spontaneous reactions — from admiring Shanghai’s futuristic skyline to humorously handling spicy hotpot in Chongqing — offered millions a relatable, humanized glimpse of modern China. Viral moments like dancing with local children or chatting with street vendors in broken Mandarin contrasted sharply with fixed Western media portrayals (描述), showcasing a lively society where ancient traditions coexist with technological innovation.(美国网红主播IShowSpeed(本名达伦·沃金斯)近日以充满活力的中国行吸引全球观众,先后打卡上海、北京、重庆和深圳四大城市。从惊叹上海未来感的天际线,到被重庆麻辣火锅辣得手忙脚乱的滑稽场面,这些即兴反应为数百万网友呈现了现代中国鲜活可感的人文图景——与街头孩童共舞、用蹩脚中文和摊贩唠嗑等病毒式传播片段,与西方媒体的固化描述形成鲜明对比,展现出一个传统与科技共舞的生动中国)”和第三段中“Cultural contrasts also came into focus. Unlike Western individualism, Chinese society emphasizes collective harmony, influencing workplace dynamics and social interactions. The digital landscape differs too: while global platforms remain unavailable, local alternatives like Douyin (TikTok’s Chinese version) and WeChat dominate daily life. Walkable urban design and strong public transit further distinguish Chinese cities from car-dependent Western hubs, promoting healthier, eco-friendly living. Equally striking is China’s shared dining culture, where shared meals foster connection — a sharp departure from individual-focused Western norms.(文化差异同样引人注目。
16.根据指代关系和下文“In that case, first of all, you need to avoid some misunderstandings about language learning.(在这种情况下,首先,你需要避免一些关于语言学习的误解)”中提到“在这种情况下”可知,设空句中会描述一种“需要避免一些关于语言学习的误解”的情景,F项“Do you want to speak many foreign languages?(你想说多种外语吗?)”
17.根据段首小标题“Language learning is difficult”可知,学习语言的第一个误解是“语言学习是困难的”,也就是说真正情况是语言学习并不困难,G项“Learning a language takes time, but is not difficult.(学习一门语言需要时间,但并不难)”与上文“It is only difficult to learn a language if you don’t want to. (只有当你不想学的时候,学习一门语言才会变得困难)”分析了让语言学习困难的真正原因和正确学习语言的方法,同时照应本段主题,符合上下文语意连贯。故选G项。
18.C项“They can’t just all be gifted at languages. (他们不可能都有语言天赋)”是对上文“In Sweden and Holland most people speak more than one language.(在瑞典和荷兰,大多数人会说不止一种语言)”的补足说明,用瑞典和荷兰大多数人会说不止一种语言,但他们不可能都有语言天赋这一事例来驳斥“You have to have a gift for learning languages(你必须有学习语言的天赋)”这一误解。故选C项。
根据下文事例“Some immigrants (移民) to North America never learn to speak more than poor English. Yet we meet people in other countries who speak perfect English.(一些北美的移民除了说蹩脚的英语外,从未学过其他语言。

CALGARY, CANADA---It was one of the most important phone calls Bruce Burrell has ever received, a call warning that a flood was headed Calgary’s way.
“I got a phone call about five in the morning on Thursday from Len McCharles, who was on watch at the time, and he said “there has been big flooding in Canmore and it’s heading this way,” said Burrell, the head of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency.
“I got up immediately, turned on the morning news, saw the pictures from Canmore and then called McCharles back. I said “open the Emergency Operations Centre.”
Burrell was in the EOC for 48 hours straight and it wasn’t until Burrell left the centre for the first time that the disaster(灾难)hit him.
“Once you step outside and you actually see it and hear it, it paints a completely different picture from what you thought you would be dealing with.”
Calgary firefighters came to help the Calgarians who were influenced by floodwaters. Keal Prince, captain of the Calgary Fire Department remembers how a young boy lost his finger while helping a woman remove debris(瓦砾) out of her house.
“As his finger got cut off it went into a fully loaded dumpster(装好的垃圾箱)”Prince said. “People had worked hours to get the dumpster loaded and now they’re working tirelessly, quickly to unload that dumpster, looking for that finger.”
“We had to remove a lot of debris to find that finger. Luckily, the finger was found and it was reattached,”Prince added.

American internet personality IShowSpeed (Darren Watkins Jr.) recently attracted global audiences with his lively tour of China, visiting Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, and Shenzhen. His spontaneous reactions — from admiring Shanghai’s futuristic skyline to humorously handling spicy hotpot in Chongqing — offered millions a relatable, humanized glimpse of modern China. Viral moments like dancing with local children or chatting with street vendors in broken Mandarin contrasted sharply with fixed Western media portrayals (描述), showcasing a lively society where ancient traditions coexist with technological innovation.
The trip underscored China’s growing appeal as a destination for global citizens. Major cities boast advanced infrastructure, including high-speed railways and efficient public transit, while maintaining affordability in daily expenses like dining and healthcare. Urban safety remains a prominent feature, with crime rates in metropolises like Shanghai far lower than in comparable Western cities. Additionally, China’s digital ecosystem — cashless payments, instant delivery services, and super-apps like WeChat — provides unmatched convenience, changing lifestyles for residents and visitors alike.
Cultural contrasts also came into focus. Unlike Western individualism, Chinese society emphasizes collective harmony, influencing workplace dynamics and social interactions. The digital landscape differs too: while global platforms remain unavailable, local alternatives like Douyin (TikTok’s Chinese version) and WeChat dominate daily life. Walkable urban design and strong public transit further distinguish Chinese cities from car-dependent Western hubs, promoting healthier, eco-friendly living. Equally striking is China’s shared dining culture, where shared meals foster connection—a sharp departure from individual-focused Western norms.
IShowSpeed’s journey sparked fresh dialogue about China’s global image. For many young viewers abroad, his authentic interactions(真实的互动) with locals and spontaneous exploration humanized(人性化) a nation often reduced to political stereotypes (刻板印象). As cross-cultural exchanges recover post-pandemic, China is increasingly seen not just as an economic leader but as a dynamic, welcoming destination for innovators, students, and creatives. While challenges persist — such as adapting to China’s unique internet environment — the country’s blend of tradition and modernity continues to redefine global perceptions, proving its story is richer and more complex than many once believed.
12.What can we infer from IShowSpeed’s interactions with locals?
A.They reinforced negative Western stereotypes of China.
B.They provided an authentic(真实的) view different from media descriptions.
C.They showed China’s lack of technological innovation.
D.They focused only on traditional Chinese culture.
13.What is highlighted as a standout(突出的) feature of Chinese urban safety?
A.Lower crime rates in metropolises like Shanghai. B.Higher crime rates than Western cities.
C.Strict police control in all cities. D.Zero tolerance for street vendors.
14.How has IShowSpeed’s trip influenced global perceptions of China?
A.It made China appear less welcoming to visitors.
B.It emphasized China’s political issues over culture.
C.It humanized China beyond political stereotypes.
D.It highlighted China’s economic challenges.
15.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The challenges of traveling in China as a foreigner.
B.How IShowSpeed became popular through his China tour.
C.The differences between Chinese and Western dining cultures.
D.China’s modern image and cultural contrasts shown via IShowSpeed’s trip.

Do you want to know the benefits of learning a foreign language? 16 In that case, first of all, you need to avoid some misunderstandings about language learning.
Language learning is difficult
It is only difficult to learn a language if you don’t want to. 17 You mostly need to listen and read. Believe me, it is that simple. I have done it many times. Soon you feel the satisfaction of understanding another language. Before you know it you start speaking. It is the way languages are usually taught that makes language learning hard to like.
You have to have a gift for learning languages
No, you don’t. Anyone who wants to can learn. In Sweden and Holland most people speak more than one language. 18 Foreign athletes in North America usually learn to speak English faster than people in more formal learning environments. In language learning it is attitude, not gift, that determines success.
19
Some immigrants (移民) to North America never learn to speak more than poor English. Yet we meet people in other countries who speak perfect English. In 1968. I learned to speak Mandarin fluently while living in Hong Kong, where few people spoke it. With the Internet, language content is available to anyone with a computer, and you can download it to your iPod and listen. Where you live is not a problem.
Only children can learn to speak another language well
Recent brain research has show that our brains remain plastic well into old age. Adults have a wide vocabulary in their own language and are better language learners than children. 20 Adults only need the child’s willingness to experiment and desire to communicate, without the fear of being laughed at.
A.You need to speak in public.
B.Adults have to learn a new language.
C.They can’t just all be gifted at languages
D.You have to live where the language is spoken.
E.I have learned 4 languages since the age of 55.
F.Do you want to speak many foreign languages?
G.Learning a language takes time, but is not difficult.
