A Visit to an Indian Restaurant
Last weekend, Li Ming and his classmates went to an Indian restaurant in the city centre. When they arrived, the waiter greeted them with a smile, pressed his palms together, and said “namaste”. Li Ming learned that this is a formal greeting in India, so he shook the waiter’s hand and tried to say “namaste” too.
The menu had many unfamiliar dishes, like spicy curry and naan bread. Li Ming felt a little confused when he read the names, but his friend Maria explained them patiently. “It’s rude to point at food with your fingers here,” she said. “We should use serving chopsticks to share the dishes.” Li Ming nodded and followed her advice.
During the meal, they talked about different table manners around the world. Maria mentioned that in Turkey, it’s uncommon to cross your legs while eating, and in Mexico, people often hug each other when they meet. Li Ming felt embarrassed when he accidentally bumped his elbow against the table, but everyone laughed and told him it was fine.
After the meal, they thanked the waiter with “merci” — a French word they’d just learned. On their way home, Li Ming said, “This trip was a great occasion to learn about cultural differences. It’s important to behave correctly when we visit other countries, so we don’t make any improper mistakes.”
When Li Ming got home, he wrote in his diary: “Today, I learned that being polite means respecting other people’s customs. I’ll remember to keep off topics that are private to others, and I’ll always congratulate my friends on their achievements.”

1. B
2. C
3. B
4. C
5. A
1. 解析:文章第一段提到,服务员“pressed his palms together, and said ‘namaste’”,因此B选项正确。
3. 解析:文章第三段明确说明“in Turkey, it’s uncommon to cross your legs while eating”,因此B选项正确。
5. 解析:文章最后一段Li Ming在日记中写道“being polite means respecting other people’s customs”,因此A选项是他的收获。
