Walking, a very easy activity, is a popular form of exercise. It offers a good way to improve physical fitness.
There might be several reasons to start with walking as a way of exercise. Many people’s goal is to lose weight when they do it regularly. But even if you don’t care about losing weight, it’s a good way to build a stronger heart, lower your cholesterol (胆固醇), have better blood pressure (血压) and sleep better at night.
It’s an inexpensive way of exercising that most people can do. You don’t need any expensive equipment—just a pair of comfortable shoes, and you can do it wherever you are. However, it might be important to set some goals for your walking, and remember to be practical about them.
If you want to lose weight, walking is a good way to start without any boring diets (节食). It is easier to walk for a while every day and eat well as usual than to be on some diet. Because dieting might make you in low spirits and out of energy. My friend Michelle who started to lose weight this way, said that the weight just melted away (逐渐减轻), only by walking one hour a day.
After a couple of weeks, you may want to walk further. You could do that step by step. But walking too much may not be good for your knees, especially for those heavy persons.
4. If people want to lose weight by walking, what should they do?
A. Go on a diet. B. Drink more water. C. Do it regularly.
5. What’s the benefit of walking according to the passage?
A. Doing well in the study.
B. Building a stronger heart.
C. Stopping any physical problems successfully.
6. What does the underlined word “equipment” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. 营养 B. 培训 C. 装备
7. What should we do about walking?

Do you know anything about the writer Charles Dickens? He was one of Britain’s most famous writers. He wrote many stories about life in London.
London was a very unpleasant place 150 years ago. Poor children started working when they were six. If their parents died, they used to be sent to the “workhouses (济贫院)”, where they worked ten or twelve hours a day for little food. Many children died of diseases (疾病) or hunger.
Dickens had a hard life. His parents lost all their money, so he began to work at the age of twelve. He had to walk ten kilometers a day to work in a factory. He earned little money in a week.
Later he became a reporter and reported events in Parliament (英国议会). He wrote Parliamentary reports in the morning and his novels in the afternoon. Writers in those days didn’t earn much money.
Dickens wrote a lot of novels. One of his most famous books was Oliver Twist, a story about a boy’s life in the workhouse and on the streets of London. Dickens lived in Doughty Street, London, from 1837 to 1839. His house is now the Dickens Museum.
Dickens wrote from his heart. In his works, he paid special attention to the “little man” at the bottom of society (社会底层) in the UK. A Christmas Carol, for example, was written to make every reader think about how they could make a difference to their society. He used his pen to give voice to the poor. That’s why Charles Dickens is loved by readers all over the world even today.

A Go on a diet. B. Drink more water. C. Do it regularly.
5. What’s the benefit of walking according to the passage?
A. Doing well in the study.
B. Building a stronger heart.
C. Stopping any physical problems successfully.
6. What does the underlined word “equipment” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. 营养 B. 培训 C. 装备
7 What should we do about walking?
A. Set practical goals. B. Walk as much as possible. C. Go on a diet at the same time.
C
Shuangxi, a small town in Fujian Province, has set up a creative project (项目) to help the poor and disabled local people.
In a local art park, which is called the Antai Art Park, people are offered free painting classes. The local government (政府) invites teachers from Shanghai to give classes. It also offers subsidies (补贴) to those who cannot pay for paints and brushes. Besides, the government has set up 42 art workrooms since the park opened in 2015. Ten of them are for disabled people. The government hopes that people can live a better life by selling their paintings after finishing the classes.
Art creation has really helped improve the quality of life in the town. In the past few years, learners in the art park have drawn about 6,000 paintings, and they have sold them. The sale brought the painters an income (收入) of more than five million (百万) yuan.

Later he became a reporter and reported events in Parliament (英国议会) He wrote Parliamentary reports in the morning and his novels in the afternoon.
