This year taught 32 a lesson: a big dream needs a daily plan you can actually follow. Trying to run too fast will only burn you out. Now, I know that 33 study is more important than just studying long hours.

One of the oldest board games in the world is called senet, and it was very popular in ancient Egypt. Can you believe that people enjoyed playing it more than 4,000 years ago? Some people used a box with 30 squares and counters made of bone, but there were other ways to play it. Some people made their own game by drawing squares in the sand or on paper and using stones as counters, so it was a game for everyone.
Did you know that people in ancient times loved playing with toys and games just like we do today? In fact, many toys and games from the past are similar to modern ones. So how did people have fun a long time ago?
The ancient Greeks and Romans played games with dice made of bone, wood, or stone. The dice had six sides with spots on them to show the numbers, just like dice today. Some very early dice had only four sides, which were in the shape of a triangle. The oldest dice ever are about 5,000 years old!
People started playing with go-go more than 2,000 years ago. This painting shows a young Greek woman with a go-go. They were often made of wood, metal, or terracotta, and they had a string connected.
48. What is senet mainly described as in the passage?
A. A toy made only for rich people B. A board game that was popular in ancient Egypt.
C. A card game played by Greek children. D. A modern game based on ancient rules.
49. What were dice in ancient Greece and Rome usually made of?
A. Bone, wood, or stone. B. Paper and metal.
C. Glass and plastic. D. Sand and clay.
50. What is TRUE about go-go in ancient times according to the passage?
A. It was only played by young boys. B. It was usually made of wood, metal, or terracotta.
C. It did not use any strings. D. It was first played less than 1,000 years ago.
51. Why do the author and historians think that ancient games are similar to modern ones?
A. Because ancient games were only for children.
B. Because ancient people used the same materials for toys.
C. Because ancient people used modern tools for games.
D. Because ancient games gave ideas for modern games.

At a corner of Sixth Avenue (第六大道) was a shop with a wide glass window. It was nice and bright. Slowly and carefully, Soapy picked up a big stone and threw it at the window. The glass broke with a loud noise. People came running around the corner. A policeman was the first among them. Soapy stood still (不动地), and he smiled when he saw the policeman.
“Where’s the man that did that?” asked the policeman.
“Don’t you think that I might have done it?” said Soapy. He was friendly and happy. What he wanted was coming towards him.
But the policeman’s mind would not consider Soapy. Men who break windows do not stop there to talk to policemen. They run away as fast as they can. The policeman saw a man further along the street, running. He ran after him. And Soapy, sick at heart, walked slowly away. He had failed two times.
Across the street was another restaurant. It was not so fine as the first one. The people who went there were not so rich. Its food was not so good. Into this Soapy took his old shoes and his worn-out (破旧的) clothes, and no one stopped him. He sat down at a table and enjoyed his meal. Then he looked up at the waiter, smiled and said, “I haven’t got any money, you know. Now, call a policeman. And do it quickly. I’m tired.” “No policeman for you,” said the waiter. “Hey, Jo!”
Another waiter came, and together they threw Soapy out into the cold street. Soapy lay there, very angry. He stood up slowly, one part at a time, and beat the dust (灰尘) from his clothes. Prison seemed only a happy dream. Blackwell’s Island seemed very far away. Soapy was very unhappy. He felt worse because a policeman, who was standing near, laughed and walked away.

A. He felt angry with the policeman.
B. He felt bad because his plan did not work.
C. He was happy that the policeman left.

54. What is the meaning of the phrase “Prison seemed only a happy dream” in the text?

D. Soapy felt prison was better than his life now.
55. How did Soapy feel when the waiters threw him out of the restaurant?

How do you cool off on hot summer days?
You might turn on your air conditioner, right?
But in India, things aren’t so simple. Only about 20 percent of families there own an air conditioner. The rest have to face rising temperatures without any cooling tools.
Now, an ancient material is stepping in to help: terracotta (赤陶土).
Back in the Bronze Age (青铜器时代), the Harappan people used terracotta pots to store water. These pots are still common in the Indian countryside today. They help people cool water without using electricity. The material is quite affordable, with each pot costing only one U.S. dollar.
So, how do these pots work? Well, terracotta has many tiny, almost invisible holes on its surface. These holes allow water to slowly dry up. As the water dries up, it carries heat away, causing the area around to become cooler.
Many Indian architects have drawn inspiration from this simple idea. They now use terracotta in their building designs to control indoor temperatures. One pioneer in this field is Ant Studio. Its CoolAnt project adds a terracotta “skin” to buildings. The skin helps moisture (潮气) — and heat — move between indoor and outdoor spaces. “We’ve seen temperature drops of six to eight degrees Celsius (摄氏度) across more than 30 sites in India,” says Monish Siripurapu, the company’s founder (创办人).
Other Indian companies are joining in. A Threshold is recycling old terracotta to make special “breathing” walls. These walls work much like Ant Studio’s terracotta “skin.” MittiCool has developed terracotta fridges that can keep food fresh for three to five days without power. For homes without reliable electricity, they can be real lifesavers.
Many researchers see terracotta as a game changer for our warming planet. Terracotta has been used for centuries to solve various problems. This invention could help people live better lives and make our planet cooler and more sustainable. As word spreads, the material may become more widely used. We could all stay cool without using lots of energy.
56. Which of the following correctly shows the changes in temperature (T) and humidity (H, 湿度) inside buildings with Ant Studio’s terracotta “skin”?
57. According to the article, Which of the following words can’t properly describe the use of terracotta?
A. unreliable . B.age-old. C. inexpensive. D. energy-saving.
58. What is the main idea of the passage??
A. Terracotta is not useful any more in modern life.
B. Terracotta helps solve cooling problems without much energy.
C. Terracotta fridges can keep food fresh without electricity.
D. Terracotta is cheap and still used in some parts of India.
59. What does the author implied (暗示) at the end of the article?
① terracotta is most useful in poor countries like India.
② terracotta is expected to slow down global warming.
③ people beyond India will use terracotta to cool off, too.
④ air conditioners will soon be replaced by terracotta “skin”.
A. ①②. B. ①④. C. ②③. D. ③④.

Chen Sheng, a young man from Meitan, Guizhou Province, feels that he really wants to help older people. Raised by his grandparents, he has always wanted to make the lives of the elderly better. After graduating in 2017 with a healthcare degree, he finished eight months of training at a local hospital and then started working at a nursing home.
At first, his work was harder than he thought. He woke up early every day at 6 a.m. to help with morning tasks and gave close care to those who could not get out of bed. His day often lasted until 11 p.m. Although he sometimes thought about stopping, the friendly smiles and trust from the people living there made him want to keep doing his work.
Chen Sheng uses his medical knowledge carefully. He gives regular health checkups, offers advice on what to eat and how to live, and helps the older people get healthier. Grandpa Li said, “When I came here, I was very weak and could only lie in bed. After two months of Chen Sheng’s help, I could walk again. Life here is good — daily services and medical care are just like at home.”
Besides physical help, Chen Sheng listens patiently when the elderly feel sad or worried. Grandma Sun likes to talk with him every day and often shares important stories. She feels happy and comforted because of the time and care he gives her. Her family is thankful for the care and attention Chen Sheng always gives her.
With more people needing help, many young workers like Chen Sheng—especially those born after 2000 — have joined nursing homes and work hard to make life better for older people.

As teens get older, parents face a challenge: how to keep them safe while also letting them learn to be independent. One good way is to set a curfew.
The curfew is a certain time by which someone needs to be at home. It’s a tool used by parents to keep their children safe and teach them to follow the rules. Curfews are usually set for the night when social risks are higher.
Research shows teens need 8–10 hours of sleep each night. Without enough sleep, they may have worse mental and physical health and lower school results. Setting a curfew helps them build a clear bedtime and get better rest.
The curfew can also help teens avoid bad pressure from friends. It also helps them learn how to be careful and manage their time well. Some teens may see curfews as a type of control. Too strict curfews can hurt the parent-teen relationship, causing rebellion and cheating.
So when setting curfews, parents should find a good balance between freedom and safety, building trust and a sense of duty.
First, set a curfew that both agree on. Every family and teen is different. Generally, younger teens should have earlier curfews, and older teens later ones.
Second, teens should talk to parents when out. They should say where they are going, who they are with, and what they will do. If plans change, they need to share the new details.
Third, make clear what happens if rules are broken. Let teens help decide the results. If they know and agree, they are more likely to act carefully.

Thank you for accepting me as a team member. I look forward to the chance to be part of the English Study Center team.
Yours,
Li Hua
