Volunteering is a great way for teenagers to make a difference and meet new people. Here are a few volunteer opportunities that you could encourage your teen to take up.
Help a local food bank
Food banks always welcome donations and new volunteers. They provide perfect volunteering opportunities for those who are interested in helping the homeless. Your teen can do anything, from preparing meals to working behind the scenes to repackage donated food items, serving food, and carrying boxes.
Help at a soup kitchen
A soup kitchen is one of the places where the hungry can get free or cheap meals (usually soup and bread). Most soup kitchens run chiefly on donations and the generosity (慷慨) of people. As a soup kitchen volunteer, teens may clean the tables and utensils (餐具), help distribute food, cook food, etc.
Volunteer for Meals on Wheels
By volunteering for Meals on Wheels, your teen will deliver good meals to the elderly or the disabled. It’s perfect for teens who have just received their driving license and love any reason to get behind the wheel of a car! They can make a massive impact in a short amount of time. Alternatively, your teen can also volunteer in their kitchen and prepare meals for delivery. With a simple gesture, your teen can bring smiles to people’s lives.
Work with Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity’s task is to build or improve a place that someone could call home. Besides helping the community, your teen will learn valuable skills such as repairing, fundraising, painting, and building. You can sign them up for long-term projects or a one-time program.

The “Father of the National Park System,” John Muir was an influential writer, naturalist, and environmentalist during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1838 in Dunbar, Scotland, he moved to the United States with his family and was attracted by the land. He was a prize-winning inventor, but it’s his love for wild places and absolute devotion to protecting them that we remember him for.
As a young man, he explored the North American continent by foot, walking thousands of miles until he eventually settled in California. There, he fell in love with Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. His article series, “Studies in the Sierra,” put his name on the map and launched a prolific writing career, with over 300 articles and 10 books published. A true mountain man, he encouraged everyone to “climb the mountains and get their good tidings”.
His writings inspired presidents, congressmen, and average citizens to care about nature. In 1890, due in large part to a series of articles he published in Century magazine, U. S. Congress created Yosemite National Park. Muir was also involved in the creation of the Sequoia, Mount Rainier, Petrified Forest, and Grand Canyon National Parks, thus earning his title.
But his work didn’t stop there: in 1892, Muir and his supporters founded the Sierra Club to “do something for wildness and make the mountains glad.” In 1901, he published the book “Our National Parks” and caught the attention of President Theodore Roosevelt, who visited him at Yosemite. During that visit, they laid the foundation of Roosevelt’s groundbreaking protection programs.
Muir died in 1914, but his memory lives on, continuing to inspire new generations of environmentalist everywhere.
24.What contributed to Muir’s writing career?
A.His love for wild places. B.His work as an environmentalist.
C.His devotion to national parks. D.His exploration of American continents.
25.Which can best explain the underlined word “prolific” in Paragraph 2?
A.Full-time. B.Normal. C.Productive. D.High-paying.
26.What can we know from paragraph 3?
A.Muir’s articles earned him his title.
B.Muir inspired people to visit national parks.
C.Muir appealed for the protection of national parks.
D.Muir’s articles had an influence on official decision.
27.Which words can best describe Muir?

About 300 to 350 million people worldwide are affected by colorblindness, a condition that makes it difficult to separate between certain color degrees. In nature, this means flowers, insects and animals may appear to be less vibrant (鲜艳的).
Virginia wants to change that. Crews have fixed special viewfinders at all 43 Virginia state parks so that more visitors can experience a world of vibrant colors. The viewfinders are designed for people with red-green colorblindness, which is the most common form of the condition. Subtypes of red-green colorblindness exist, but they all affect how people notice shades with reds and greens in them.
Created by SeeCoast Manufacturing, the viewfinders are equipped with special lenses (镜头) made by EnChroma that help people with red-green colorblindness distinguish between color degrees. Similar to binoculars (双筒望远镜), the viewfinders also enlarged whatever’s in view.
In Virginia, the project started last summer at Natural Tunnel State Park, located near the far western tip of the state. Natural Tunnel State Park fixed a viewfinder at an overlook that offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding scenery. That first viewfinder was such a big hit that the state decided to bring them to the rest of Virginia’s state parks. Funding for the project came from donations made by visitors through the “Round-up for Parks” program.
“The colorblind-friendly viewfinders aren’t the only way Virginia is making its parks more accessible. This summer, Natural Bridge State Park also began offering a free mobile app designed for people who are blind or visually damaged,” reports WFXR’s Thad Randasso. The app provides audio instructions in 26 languages to help users find direction in the park, and also provides real-time audio descriptions of the user’s surroundings.
28.What is the main purpose of the special viewfinders in Virginia’s parks?
A.To improve the eyesight of the colorblind.
B.To help colorblind people see colors better.
C.To strengthen the security of the colorblind.
D.To make the parks more attractive to the colorblind.
29.How do the viewfinders function properly?
A.Through binoculars. B.By enlarging views.
C.Through expert lenses D.By changing shades.
30.Why was Natural Tunnel State Park mentioned in Para 4?
A.to show the success of the project B.to set an example for other parks
C.to help raise the fund for the project D.to support the“Round-up for Parks” program.
31.What does the last paragraph focus on?
A.The future development of Virginia’s parks.
B.Another measure beneficial to the park visitors.
C.The benefits of a project for blind people.
D.More service offered in different parks.

A half dozen women, in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, gather in a classroom in Phoenix for a few hours on a weekday morning. They are all caregivers of young children and participants in an Arizona state-funded initiative called Kith and Kin. The program aims to give family, friend, and neighbor caregivers the kind of training that licensed(领有许可证的)caregivers are required to have.
A study in the south Phoenix area found that 60% of children from birth to 5 years old were being cared for by caregivers who don’t have a license. That study led the nonprofit organization Candelen to launch Kith and Kin in 1999. “There was a high need to provide both training and support in communities where families with young children live,” says program director Angela Tapia.
Now, 25 years later, programs like Kith and Kin are getting renewed attention on account of the fragile(脆弱的)state of the child care industry. There’s increased urgency from policymakers and businesses to ensure communities have access to affordable, high-quality child care, paving the way for parents, especially women, to work.
The sessions are paid for by Arizona’s government. While most federal(联邦制的)and state funding for the child care industry in the U. S. goes to licensed settings, Arizona is one of a number of states that have long recognized the importance of informal caregiving arrangements that are allowing millions of parents to go to work.
Such arrangements are especially common in immigrant communities, where many parents hold jobs with nontraditional hours and prefer caregivers who share their language and culture.
Candelen estimates it trains about 1,000 caregivers a year. Melinda Gulick, CEO of Arizona’s early childhood agency First Things First, says the funding is recognition that all children, regardless of where they spend their first years, deserve a high-quality early childhood experience. “For many parents, the best place for children to be is with their aunts or their grandmothers or their neighbors,” she says.
32.What can be learned about the women from paragraph 1?

34.What is Melinda Gulick’s attitude towards Kith and Kin?
A.Approving. B.Critical. C.Uncertain. D.Puzzled.
35.What is the text mainly about?

B.Federal initiatives in early childhood education.
C.Challenges faced by working women in Phoenix.
D.The decrease of licensed child care facilities in Phoenix.

The annual school expedition to the remote Green Valley was always the highlight of David’s year. Their geography teacher, Mr. Evans, an experienced guide, had repeatedly warned the students to stay on the main trail. But David, who loved photography, couldn’t resist the perfect shot. He had carefully packed his bag, making sure it contained extra batteries, a first-aid kit, and his prized camera.
As David focused on the huge eagle soaring above, the unthinkable happened. The ground at the edge of the cliff, softened by recent rains, gave way beneath his feet. With a cry of shock, he tumbled down the steep slope, coming to a jarring stop against a tree. A sharp pain shot through his right ankle. Above him, the voices of his classmates grew fainter and then faded completely.
When he regained his senses, the sun was lower in the sky. His ankle was swollen and purple, his backpack was torn, and his heart sank when he pulled out his shattered phone. Panic crept in as he remembered Mr. Evans’s safety lecture: “If you get lost, stop, think, and use what you have.” David quickly assessed his situation. He had a half-empty water bottle, a first-aid kit, a whistle, and his still-functioning camera.
Meanwhile, Mr. Evans had noticed David’s absence and immediately informed the park rangers. A search team was already combing the valley, their voices faintly reaching David on the wind. He knew he had to attract their attention before the night fully descended.

【答案】
With trembling hands, David unzipped the first-aid kit from his damaged backpack. He found a bandage and carefully wrapped it around his swollen ankle, then used two sticks and his belt to fix his right leg. Although the pain persisted, he felt slightly more at ease. Remembering the whistle attached to his bag, he blew three short bursts repeatedly. As the air grew colder, he came up with another idea: he used his camera’s flash, pointing it toward the sky every few seconds. These actions, though tiring, kept him alert and filled with hope.
Just as his hope was beginning to fade, he heard faint voices echoing through the valley. Without hesitation, he blew the whistle even harder and flashed his camera toward the sound. Moments later, beams of light appeared, cutting through the trees. It was Mr. Evans, accompanied by two park rangers! One of the rangers quickly wrapped David in a warm blanket while the other checked his leg. “You did very well,” the ranger said. “Your signals helped us find you quickly.” Leaning on the ranger’s shoulder, David finally felt safe. He realized that his survival hadn’t been a matter of luck, but of the practical skills he had learned—and the calmness he had managed to maintain in the face of danger.

A.They send children to a program.
B.They receive training in child care.
C.They are the founders of Kith and Kin.
D.They are occupied in caring about their students.
33.What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A.To describe the necessities of family care.
B.To show the educational challenges in Phoenix.
C.To present the requirements for licensed caregivers.
D.To offer some background on establishing Kith and Kin.
34.What is Melinda Gulick’s attitude towards Kith and Kin?
A.Approving. B.Critical. C.Uncertain. D.Puzzled.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.To introduce a program that aims to train caregivers of young children.

Volunteering at the Happiness Nursing Home
Last weekend witnessed some voluntary activities carried out by my classmates and me at the Happiness Nursing Home in response to our school’s call for everyone to strive to be a volunteer.
Upon arrival, my classmates and I began to get busy with various tasks, ranging from sweeping the floors and cleaning the windows to tidying up the rooms for the elderly. After that, we also chatted with them.
Not only did the activities give me joy and satisfaction in the process of helping others, but they also led me to understand that care from the whole society can really make a difference to the elderly.
第二节(满分25分)

With trembling hands, David unzipped the first-aid kit from his damaged backpack.
